Marijuana may affect fertility in young men"If you’re a cannabis user and you’re trying for a baby ... stop." This advice comes from Dr. Allan Pacey, senior lecturer in andrology at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom and lead author of a new study that suggests using marijuana could increase a man's risk of fertility problems. The study, published in the journal Human Reproduction, looked at how a man's lifestyle affects his sperm morphology: the size and shape of sperm. Researchers collected data from 1,970 men who provided semen as part of a fertility assessment. All of the lifestyle information was self-reported, and researchers made no attempt to confirm accuracy. Of those men, 318 produced abnormal sperm, where less than 4% of it was the correct size and shape (as defined by the World Health Organization). The remaining men's sperm had a higher percentage at a "normal" size and shape. "Cannabis smoking was more common in those men who had sperm morphology less than 4%," Pacey said. "Cannabis affects one of the processes involved in determining size and shape. And we also know that the way cannabis is metabolized is different in fertile and infertile men." The study found that men who had less than 4% normal sperm were typically under 30 years old, had used marijuana within three months of giving their sample and were twice as likely to have provided their sample during the summer. Any of those factors could have influenced sperm morphology, but Pacey said "the only thing we found that was a risk that a man can do something about was cannabis." The researchers did not set out to study cannabis; they were simply collecting data about men’s lifestyles to identify risks to fertility. They looked at a number of possibilities, including cigarettes, alcohol, recreational drug use, employment history, BMI, medical history and the type of underwear the men wore. The researchers concluded that none of these were factors. A third of all infertility cases are linked to the male partner, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (PDF). The society says marijuana is associated with impaired sperm function and should not be used by men trying to conceive. Society President Rebecca Sokol says the study confirms previous studies that found a possible but not proven link between abnormal semen and sperm function and the use of cannabis. But she warns that the study does not have enough cases to draw definite conclusions. "The take-home lesson of the article is that clinicians should counsel their patients on the possible relationships between lifestyle factors, abnormal semen parameters and fertility outcomes," Sokol said. "This should include a discussion that the data are often inconclusive, but the motto 'everything in moderation' is a wise approach for the couple who is planning a pregnancy." Another paper on the health consequences of cannabis was published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and a team of the institute's researchers prepared a paper detailing the risks based on the strongest scientific evidence currently available. According to the paper, they wanted to dispel "the popular notion that marijuana is a harmless pleasure" and does not need to be regulated. The paper details what the research shows are the adverse effects of recreational use, including the risks of addiction. Approximately 9% of those who try marijuana will become addicted; one in six of those who start as teenagers and 25% to 50% of those who smoke daily become addicted. The researchers also wrote about the harmful effects of cannabis use on brain development, especially in kids and teenagers. Preliminary research shows that adolescents who are early-onset smokers are slower at tasks, have lower IQs later in life and have an increased incidence of psychotic disorders. Other problems associated with marijuana use, according to the paper, include impaired short-term memory and motor coordination, altered judgment, effects on school performance, a higher risk of motor-vehicle accidents and higher risk of cancer and other health issues like heart disease and stroke. "There is a widespread and growing perception among not only youth, but the public in general, that marijuana is a relatively harmless drug, and it has been difficult marshaling science to correct this perception," Volkov said. "The science of marijuana is far from settled, and this has allowed advocates of various positions to cherry-pick evidence to support their particular stance." The review also lists some of the potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis. Conditions and symptoms that may be helped by marijuana treatment include glaucoma, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, nausea, inflammation and AIDS-related anorexia and wasting syndrome, according to the report. Volkow and her fellow researchers fear that as governments begin to modify marijuana policy toward legalization, recreational use will increase, as will a host of negative health problems. However, Mason Tvert, communications director at the Marijuana Policy Project, says the report by the National Institute on Drug abuse researchers is not an objective review of current scientific evidence. The Marijuana Policy Project has worked to reform marijuana policies and laws since 1995 at both the federal and state level. It lobbies for legislation that would replace marijuana prohibition in favor of legal regulation. It provided much of the staff and funding in the push to legalize and regulate marijuana for adults 21 and older in Colorado in 2012, and its goal is to pass, by 2017, at least 10 more laws that would regulate cannabis like alcohol. "NIDA has long been criticized for prioritizing politics over science," Tvert said. "They fail to acknowledge any of the well-known research that refutes, and in some cases completely debunks, their conclusions. This more closely resembles a poorly written college essay ... than it does an objective, evidence-based journal article. Every objective study on marijuana has concluded that it poses far less harm than alcohol to the consumer and to society." |

There is the unfortunate non sequitur going from 'marijuana is not totally harmless' (which is probably true) to 'it must be regulated'. It's not really the government's business to regulate people's private choices and their private poisons.
It is when that "private poison" results in:
1) Impairment of brain function that increases risk of harm to the individual and others e.g. car accidents that kill the public
2) Impacts bystanders e.g. children in pot users homes by second hand smoke
3) Impacts PUBLIC health care costs – via increased costs dealing with smoke related illnesses such as lung/liver/kidney cancer, emphysema, stroke etc.
Or did you think that somehow smoking pot magically prevents you from all the harmful exposure effects to incomplete combustion products that are pro-oxidative carcinogenic and reproductive toxins ?
except none of that applies universially to marijuana or people who use it...
@4sanity – Cannabis does not have to be smoked to consume it. It can be vaporized or eaten. Your argument is invalid. Please do some research on this topic before commenting on threads like this. It is obvious that you either don't pay attention to your surroundings enough or you are unable to comprehend the information that is everywhere regarding ingestion of cannabis.
@ 4sanity
Impairment of brain function ??? Are you talking about alcohol ?
Public healthcare costs ???,cannabis does not cause any of those dieases, alcohol and tobacco do !
Are you claiming that Dr.Donald Tashkin,UCLA cannabis and smoking studies,is Wrong and YOU are Right ??
4sanity ???,really ?
@4sanity Maybe you shouldn't drive at all if you're too afraid.
@4 insanity: Marijuana has not caused an increase in 'car accidents that kill the public'. You are a reefer madness fool.
“At the present time, the evidence to suggest an involvement of cannabis in road crashes is scientifically unproven. REFERENCE: G. Chesher and M. Longo. 2002. “Cannabis leads to a more cautious style of driving. This story is complete BS and I'm the proof. I am 29 and have been a heavy smoker since i was 11. I have 4 kids one of which is only 4 months old. I got my wife pregnant with in the first 2 months of trying to every time. Stories like this tick me off so bad. These studies are funded and they have to give results so they just tell the Fundy what they want to hear. And it is crap. Weed does not make you stupid or crazy or infertile. A person who has these problems and they happen to be a smoker are going to have these problems with or with out weed.
@4sanity –
"1) Impairment of brain function that increases risk of harm to the individual and others e.g. car accidents that kill the public"
The states that have legalized marijuana for medical purposes have shown a 9% decrease in traffic fatalities compared to states that have not.
"2) Impacts bystanders e.g. children in pot users homes by second hand smoke"
There have been no studies showing any detrimental effects from second hand cannabis smoke. Cannabis smoke does not cause lung cancer and it has no psychoactive effects. 95% of the THC is absorbed by the lungs within a few seconds of inhalation, leaving little in the exhale.
"3) Impacts PUBLIC health care costs – via increased costs dealing with smoke related illnesses such as lung/liver/kidney cancer, emphysema, stroke etc."
The average alcohol user costs $640 in public health care costs. The average cannabis user costs $40. We'd be a much healthier country if alcohol users switched to cannabis.
4sanity You obviously know nothing about pot except what you've heard from the government propaganda or some special interest group. Heck you might be one those 80's kids that grew up with Just Say No.
1) Impairment of brain function that increases risk of harm to the individual and others e.g. car accidents that kill the public
There still trying to find that one car wreck because of pot.
2) Impacts bystanders e.g. children in pot users homes by second hand smoke
Second hand smoke is total BS. Again government and special interest BS. Responsible folks wouldn't smoke pot around their kids.
3) Impacts PUBLIC health care costs – via increased costs dealing with smoke related illnesses such as lung/liver/kidney cancer, emphysema, stroke etc.
More BS. We have a broken healthcare system and you need someone to blame other than the industry itself. It should always be the right of individual to put what they want in their bodies without special interest pushing government to make laws that continue the war against the American people.
STOP GOP terrorism against Medical Marijuana Patients with PTSD.
STOP Republican bigotry against US Veterans..!.
2 words for you. Bob. Marley. He fathered 11 children.
This sounds like the daily reefer madness articles on Denver news sites since it was made legal.
If a woman smokes marijuana, gets pregnant, gives birth, there is a 100% chnace her baby will be born naked.
Thanks for the laugh.
"All of the lifestyle information was self-reported, and researchers made no attempt to confirm accuracy."
So why is this report even being published? And why is it being reported on CNN?
Because, as the figurehead of the NIDA explained, "There is a widespread and growing perception among not only youth, but the public in general, that marijuana is a relatively harmless drug, and it has been difficult marshaling science to correct this perception," Volkov said. "The science of marijuana is far from settled, and this has allowed advocates of various positions to cherry-pick evidence to support their particular stance."
There's no need to correct it, because it isn't incorrect. Generally, you call it a misperception in that case. Science is never settled – that's one of its permises.
@ JT: The figureheads at the DEA claim that industrial hempseed foods are a 'dangerous narcotic'. They clearly don't believe in science.
Finally, some good news!!
If I have kids, I'm doing it in a lab, Im sure they can grab one swimmer, or clone part of my testicle to make new sperm. C'mon the future is now.
Are you for rear 4sanity?
You clearly have no clue about the effects or side effects, yet you want to campaign against it? Why aren't you on a campaign against alcohol that kills millions?
"are you for rear" isn't that a little too personal ???
I agree with Steve: Seriously??? This is news??? If anyone has ever been around a bunch of stoners, they rarely have kids – sperm don't swim stoned.. and the ones that do: they usually turn out to have girls. I can't believe there is no credibility on this article.
However, this might be an idea for researchers to use this "data" to develop a Male Birth Control...
I've never known a stoner couple that couldn't conceive, and the only man I know who couldn't get his wife pregnant (believe me, you aren't going to meet a lot of men in your life who would tell you this) definitely never smoked weed. Interestingly enough the kids are about 50/50 boy/girl. What are the odds? 🙂
So if we're going with anecdotes (and I think we should), feel free to include mine next time too.
I've consumed cannabis since the age of 15 and have two beautiful daughters with my wife.
I know it anecdotal, but tell that to my stoner friends who have used cannabis since they were both teenagers and had twin boys in their 30s. It was a natural pregnancy too, no fertility treatments. The woman used cannabis throughout her pregnancy (ate it didn't smoke it). The twins are now in their teens and they are perfectly normal. One of the twins is really intelligent (IQ over 135) and the other is average. No health, mental, or developmental problems at all. In fact, most of the stoners I know have children and had no problems becoming pregnant.
I've always wondered if there is also a link between autism and smoking pot.
The people I know with autistic children never smoked pot; the children of people I know who smoked suffered no ill effects. In fact, one of the children went on to become a doctor.
So, yes, there IS a correlation....
Uh... Cigarette smoking wasn't a factor in infertility? There's considerable previous research that shows cigarettes reduce sperm count a great deal.
....and most serial killers had milk in there refrigerators......correlation does not equal causation.
We must ban milk now before it's too late! Think of the children!
"All of the lifestyle information was self-reported, and researchers made no attempt to confirm accuracy."
Great study....
No kidding. Cannabis is a highly lipid-soluble substance and the most lipid-rich areas in the body are in the gonads (sex organs) and the brain. That's why marijuana can cause mutations in the genetic code in sperm or ovum that raise the risk for fatal genetic diseases and damage to the limbic system and frontal lobe in the brain, causing cognitive deficits, memory loss and psychosis. Although these effects are dose-mediated, this is a serious problem and it's really a shame that it's being legalized.
Whoa, whoa there big fella, where do you get this crazy siht from ??
NIDA pamphlet...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I've worked in a locked state psychiatric hospital for over 20yrs, and I have seen exactly zero marijuana induced psychosis patients. Its a lie.....
Gee, I see a lot of cost/benefit analysis going on in these articles. A lot of "increased risk of XX, inreased chance of YY" but suprising not a lot of "Smoking marijuana makes you feel good. It makes you happy." Most people seem to agree that you can't put a price on happiness. People spend literally every penny they own in the pursuit of "life, liberty, and hapiness" – well MJ will get you there for relatively cheap and with very little consequence.
Sure, there are lots of other things that make me happy. A lot of them are probably healthier too, although running does increase your risk of heart attack (while running), increased blood pressure (while running), lack of high thinking skills (while running) and of course, a greater chance of developing joint problems later in life 🙂
Also, I hear that there's a chance you could drown while swimming, or that you could pick up a really nasty flesh eating bacterial infection from paddling in the river.
But most of all, what makes me happy is knowing that somewhere down the line there might come a point in time where I don't have to justify what makes me happy to begin with.
You forgot to include deficits in executive functions, other cognitive deficits, psychosis and damage to the frontal lobe and limbic system. Comments like this make me really pessimistic about the future of humanity. The easiest way to prove it: quite smoking weed for six months.
Jay, honey, face reality. I've been smoking (daily) for over 35 years and have an IQ of 128 (per Mensa test). I own my home, my car, have no outstanding debt and work a full-time job where I receive almost daily accolades from the upper echelon, as well as the customers. They say I'm the friendliest person they have ever met and will actually refuse to deal with anyone else.
Legalization WILL happen within our lifetime. So very glad for it.
@JR –
"Comments like this make me really pessimistic about the future of humanity."
In that case, maybe you shouldn't have children.
The de novo genetic mutations in the DNA in sperm or ovum that often can result from smoking marijuana do increase the risk of Autism. After all, there are >100 genes identified that cause susceptibility to Autism.

I guess your real problem is there are millions of adults out there born of cannabis using parents. What to do? roflmao
Male fertility has been declining since the 1950s. So this is not something that just started to happen. It is happening worldwide. According to WHO it has been happening since the 1950s and is blamed on toxic chemicals in products. Do a search of "Male Fertility Decline – Are They an Endangered Species?". So although marijuana might or might not be causing some of the decline, many other chemicals seemed to be involved.
Thought that pot was better than alcohol. Seems like they all say?
MJ is better than alcohol.
It calms nausea, while alcohol can cause it.
I can drive MUCH better stoned, than drunk.
Smoking makes you happy; drinking makes you mean (as evidenced by the posts on this thread).
I've read alcohol makes you impotent and cigarettes too.
It can hurt fertility? That's a good thing – legalize it immediately! We are seriously overpopulated.
So as a young man, I should continue smoking
No, you should be a vaporizer. 🙂
*be using a
Expect a whole slew of these Reefer Madness types to appear as we get closer to full legalization of marijuana.
The same thing happened during the repeal of alcohol Prohibition back in the 1930's.
.
nothing wrong with not having children, they cost, they dont listen good and i cant afford them. I say just make it legal then maybe American can fix some of these delaptated roads and bridges with the tax revenue America will never stop me from endulging if i choose to do so. So hop on the train of the new green economy before the smoke gets in your eyes.
"they don't listen good", LOL
Even though I am PRO-MJ legaliization, I am all for those who are dumb enough to incessently smoke this stuff to be rendereded infertile by it, because the world HAS ENOUGH STUPID PEOPLE IN IT! If only the same infertility could befall users of alcohol and tobacco!
"HAS ENOUGH STUPID PEOPLE IN IT!" Yup, it takes one to know one. I'm glad I don't know you. 😉
First used MJ in 1965,three children, five grandchildren later fertility doesn't appear to be a problem.
This is natures way of protecting the species.
If nature was intentionally protecting the species, you wouldn't be here.
@Kerfluffle – Excellent rejoinder!
I know a lot of stoners with kids, actually my stoner friends usually have less trouble than those who do not smoke. Bs report.
Factoring in attrition some men in part of the study had a sperm count drop of 4%. http://forum.cannabisdigest.ca...
Okay so don't smoke weed if you are trying to get pregnant .
Marijuana is not a physically addictive drug like alcohol , tobacco , cocaine etc . Please report the facts not paranoia .
well...both of my son-in-laws smoke a lot of weed. they seem to procreate like rabbits. several grandkids, which is cool. but just saying...i find this study supremely suspect, and i wonder who funded it.
Crazy, doubt this will affect many from the sound of it though. Interesting article.
Justin @ Budski.net
Hey Mon!
I smoked ounces of pot every day and had like 20 kids Mon!
You probably have some you don't remember!
The study also showed that men with abnormal sperm samples were nearly twice as likely to have ejaculated during the summer months...
So, it's your summer coming up... I know I'm going out to get a bunch of weed, and have a "F'in" great time!
I saw that part about lower sperm is also found in men who ejaculate in summer months in the study too. Really? Really? Every man ejaculates in the summer, spring, fall, winter. This summer ejaculation data qualifier pretty much discredits the entire study. It really cracks me up how the scare articles with no real data are coming out. The DEA must be scared they will have to find real jobs.
We know that it interferes with the development of the prefrontal lobes, and they don't develop fully until around 30.

I can make stuff up too. That doesn't mke it reality.
Well dope lovers, it appears your hate against anyone who disagrees with you demand to smoke dope knows no bounds. Please do ingest, hopefully tons, and reap your rewards. Soros cannot wait to rip you off and steal your money.
No one hates you, Steve, because you disagree with us. In fact, smoking pot will make you happy while drinking will only make you mean(er).
We don't hate you. We pity you for your stupidity.
What a bogus study! If that is true....explain that to the millions of Babies born in the 70's. Controlled studies always glean the result that you are looking for. Data can and is manipulated for those who would steal our freedoms and liberties! Smoke up y'all!!!
I agree with you. Logic tells us if this study were true, as pot smoking is more accepted an increases (as it has) birth rate should decrease (as it hasn't) it really shows you that you can get bunch of scientists to put out BS if you pay them well. But people are too smart to be fooled, except the prohibitionist who have never tried pot. They jump on this like it was gospel truth. The same scientist used to say it cause men to grow breasts and masturbation causes blindness.
This report is complete tripe and hogwash. Every hippy I ever knew and smoked pot had 3 or 4 children. Who in the world comes up with these lies? The nitwits in Washington need to stop playing this broken record as everyone knows it's a lie.
Marijuana is safer than aspirin and a thousands times safer than alcohol or tobacco. I would rather see young people smoke pot than use alcohol. By the way if you want to see brain dead walk down to skid row and check out the alcoholics there. While visiting skid row ask how many are there for marijuana use? I have never seen one person yet!

I smoked years ago and stopped as I did notice negative consequences in memory and energy. I won't resume as I fear that it may cause an increase chance in obtaining dementia or further memory loss. Those of you who absolutely deny that pot causes any problems are either too stoned to notice, or profligate propaganda to make it legal. Making it legal doesn't concern me as alcohol is far more destructive and already legal. But don't try to tell everyone that one shouldn't use caution when being a pot smoker, or that there are no negative consequences, as you are lying like a politician when you do.
Oh goodness, when you say you quit indulging because you are afraid of pot causing dementia, you couldn't be more wrong. Cannabiniods are proven to prevent dementia. And Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and other age related form of dementia. Very easy to prove to you. Google US patent 6630507 or see: http://www.google.com/patents/US6630507
My concern about everyone going around smoking pot is that when they get in a car all whacked out from being high and kill people in car crashes. Just like alcoholics, we don't need more DUI's on the road. It's bad enough when people drink and drive; we don't need people who smoke and drive, too, to add to it.
You have valid concerns. People shouldn't drive when inebriated on anything. Fortunately data shows as pot use increases in society, automobile accidents decrease. Link: http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.1086/668812?uid=3739920&uid=2&uid=4&uid=3739256&sid=21103830941351
" about everyone going around smoking pot"
You don't have a worry, 'everyone' isn't going to use cannabis. Idiots will drive, wish we could prevent it, but we can't, we can only educate and prosecute when we find a DUI.

The study that marijuana causes sleep loss & fertility issues. First off I'm a 39yr old female highly educated. I have smoked marijuana on and off since I was 13yrs old. I don't have fertility issues, no memory issues, & I sleep very well. When I wasn't smoking marijuana I had very horrible sleeping issues due to medical conditions. I have started smoking again and I'm getting the best sleep ever. When they are doin g these studies they lack some important information. Each strain of marijuana is different from the next ie... low THC & high CBD or low CBD & high THC these chemicals make a big difference if the strain makes you hyper or sleepy.. Did these people have underlying medical issues that were or were not disclosed that could have played a roll in how they were sleeping. As for people driving while high is not a good thing however drinking and driving is more dangerous.
You are way more credible than the bogus study. I definitely believe you over this hogwash BS study.
The key words in this headline is "may affect" – that's why I think this is a lot of bunk.
Well I guess my ex cheated on me then how else could my kid have been born if you believe this stuff
The study failed to show that marijuana causes all men to have sperm counts below 4%. This is a lame study that only found correlation to marijuana use, and did not prove that marijuana causes everyone who uses it to have fertility problems. Another lame study paraded around by the anti-marijuana groups as proof of harmful effects, when it is NOT proof at all.
The miracle drug that just keeps giving!!! The cure to the overpopulation problem!
Fossil fuel?
Lelalizarla como anticonceptivo entonces.
Well I for one AGREE with this article! My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for 15 months, with no luck. I had all the tests done, and everything came out perfect. My husband had him semen analysis done, and he had 0% morphology, and he is a heavy daily marijuana user, and uses the oil form also. He does not drink, smoke cigarettes, or anything else bad, just marijuana, his doctors also agree that marijuana is the reason. Since getting our test results back, he has quit (which I never thought he could do), but it has now been 72 days without smoking, and we are have another repeat semen analysis the first week of July. So yes, for some men marijuana can have a significant effect on the sperm morphology. Wish it wasn't true, but unfortunately for us it is, but obviously it is not the same for everybody.
"There is a widespread and growing perception among not only youth, but the public in general, that marijuana is a relatively harmless drug, and it has been difficult marshaling science to correct this perception,"
Yeah it's been difficult marshaling science to correct this perception. Because it isn't correct!! Even his "science", like the greater chance of being in a car accident, has nothing to do with smoking marijuana and is strictly a correlation, and not causation. The accident # could be because the percentage of marijuana users is higher among alcoholics, who we know crash due to alcohol intoxication. I'd also like to know how the define "addiction". They make it sound like it is physically addictive, which it is NOT. If they count psychological addiction, meaning "too mentally weak to stop", then they might as well classify sugar and fried food as addictive.
Jeez!! I can't believe what I'm reading on this board. I'm all for legalization and that it's LESS harmful than alcohol even, but it amazes me how you people are unwilling to attribute ONE negative aspect to marijuana. I mean you won't even concede ONE negative aspect or possibility or whatever. Come on!! Does this make sense? Nothing is that pure
To 'whatever'
We accept harms when they are PROVEN. All of these flash-bang studies that come out claiming to find significant harms of marijuana, are quickly debunked. But the debunking never seems to make it back to headlines. That's because most of them are funded by NIDA, who cares little about peer reviewed science. They just want propaganda.
NIDA has been desperately funding research looking for significant harms of marijuana for DECADES! But they have found none. If they had, they, and all the prohibition profiteers, would be shouting it from the rooftops.
Instead – [crickets chirping]
The UK has prohibitionist agencies that are even worse than NIDA for generating junk science.
It is not marijuana consumers, but prohibitionists that can't face reality.
This, along with wearing tidy whities, really makes you think, OF BS!
In Junior High health class we were told by the Phy Ed teachers who taught health(yikes!) that sperm motility was affected by marijuana use, thus impacting fertility, this while telling us we shouldn't be having sex or babies. I couldn't figure out for the life of me then why I should care if I couldn't have babies due to pot use. And now with the world overcrowded and the consequences becoming obvious, why should we care if fertility goes down as marijuana use increases? I think fewer people enjoying a higher (pun intended) quality of life is desirable.
I agree completely. IF pot does decrease population, perhaps we should hand it out for Want a real scare? Read "Inferno" by Dan Brown (DaVinci Code). This is very well researched and if those numbers in the book are for real and Dan insists that they are, we're in a bad way even now. But what's to come due to over population is REALLY scary. Great read.
One can only hope this means that the stoner generation will be a self correcting problem and those with a predisposition towards drug use will be reduced in the gene pool.
Why would "one" hope that? This study is bogus, like ALL the "studies" of the last few decades claiming harm. Can you remember even one that was not later debunked?
Science, and widespread experience, have shown marijuana is not addictive and is FAR less harmful than alcohol. Every person who switches from Budweiser to buds improves their health tremendously – as well as the lives of their family and community.
SAMHSA research determined more than 100 million Americans have consumed marijuana. That's near HALF the of-age population. There are an estimated 30 to 50 million current consumers. The vast majority consume moderately – on the weekends or less, and are successful, hard-working, respected members of their communities. They are from all walks of life and loved by the families they support.
Marijuana is as American as apple pie – and healthier.
Less harmful perhaps in a direct physical manner, but not less harmful to the development of the stoner generations of the past couple generations. They have squandered their educational opportunities in a drug addled haze and a great many of them will not manage to make up for that lost time and will be forever stuck in the lower class with low paying jobs.

That's just demonizing nonsense. – Every person who switches from addictive, very harmful alcohol, to near harmless marijuana improves their health tremendously – as well as the lives of their family and community.
"All of the lifestyle information was self-reported, and researchers made no attempt to confirm accuracy."
aaaaand your study means nothing.
