Does soda make kids violent?Yet another study is warning parents to limit soda consumption with children. While previous studies have linked soda consumption with higher rates of obesity, a study published in the journal Pediatrics, says it also causes aggressive, violent behavior in children as young as 5 years old.
The study: Researchers at Columbia University followed the habits of about 3,000 mother-child pairs from 20 large cities in the United States. While the children were followed since birth in the long-term study, the data pertaining to soda consumption was compiled when the children were 5 years old. Researchers asked the mothers to self-report how many servings of soda their child drinks on a typical day, and then answer a series of behavioral questions. The results: Children who consumed at least four servings of soda per day were twice as likely than those who didn't drink any soda to display aggressive violent behaviors - such as destroying other people’s belongings, starting physical fights and verbally attacking other children. The kids were also more likely to have trouble paying attention to instructions, and were more withdrawn socially compared to 5-year-olds who didn’t consume soda. “There was a dose response,” said Shakira Suglia, study author and associate professor of epidemiology at Columbia University. “With every increase in soda consumption, we saw an increase in behavior problems. It was significant for kids who consumed as few as one serving of soda per day.” The association was present after researchers adjusted for parenting styles, and socio-demographic factors such as how much violent television the children were exposed to, their sleep schedule, and candy consumption. Limitations: Because researchers relied on self-reporting by mothers, they were unable to pinpoint the type of soda (diet versus regular), or the exact serving size associated with the increase in negative behavior. The American Beverage Association disagrees with the findings of this study. In a statement to CNN, the group said: "It is a leap to suggest that drinking soda causes these or any other behavioral issue. The science does not support that conclusion. The authors themselves note that their study 'is not able to identify the nature of the association between soft drinks and problem behaviors.' Importantly, our member companies do not promote or market the consumption of soft drinks to children in the age group examined in this study.” Takeaway: The researchers say their findings add to the mounting evidence that soda consumption has a negative effect for children. Hey, lets fill kids up with sugar and see what happens... Wait we already know what happens. THEY GO CRAZY! Its not science that needs to be proven, it happens everyday. Why you don't give your kids sugar filled snacks RIGHT before bed. They will never sleep until they've made 1000 laps around the house.
Well, no, that's not what happens. There have been several studies looking for behavioral changes due to sugar, and not one has found any.
What's interesting, though, is studies that have looked at confirmation bias. When parents are put in a separate room while their children are given foods said to be loaded with sugar, the parents report their children's behavior changes for the worse – even when the researchers, who are actually studying the parents, have given the kids foods that are sugar-free. Parents see what they expect to see, even when it isn't there. The same children, observed by behavioral psychologists without knowledge of what has been eaten, see no change in behavior at all.
That's why this study is so suspect. It relies solely on after-the-fact reporting by parents – not observation of the children themselves by an objective observer, and certainly not by any objective test. Lots of parents already buy into the "Sugar == Bad" stereotype, and readily report that they've seen it for themselves. Even when they haven't.

We really need to know if these soft drinks primarily included things like colas, or if things like Sprite and Sierra mist were also problematic. Things to test include club soda, high fructose corn syrup versus sucrose-only sodas, phosphoric acid, caffeine, etc.
I'm guessing sodas like Sierra mist natural that have no phosphoric acid, no caffeine and no high fructose corn syrup may have the same result as candy. Somehow I doubt that carbonation itself is the problem. I would be very glad to hear of a study on it. Even so, driving any soda every single day sounds potentially problematic.
By problematic, I don't mean unhealthy. I mean, do they make kids aggressive and such more than candy.
This hardly seems like a reliable study. Data were collected through self-reporting, and they ignored all other contributing factors. Did it ever pop into the researchers' minds that the type of parent who allows a child to have 4+ sodas a day would probably be the type of parent who doesn't bring the kid back in line when they act out aggressively at school?
That was my first thought, deadlyserious. This type of "study" contributes nothing to the sugar debate.
Exactly. Kids I grew up with drank soda and cool aid by the gallon and they were well behaved because their parents disciplined them. This study is nonsense...next....

This story is just outright silly. I can't believe these "researchers" completely missed the most obvious issue. Parents that spoil their kids. Instead of teaching the child to control themselves, they give in and just give it to them. These children grow up with not learning how to deal with things when they don't get their way and in turn lash out against others.

First of all, self-reporting is the least accurate means of data collection.
But even assuming that that data is correct, all this study shows is a correlation between soda consumption and behavior - not a causative relationship.
Parents that allow children to drink much soda – which has no nutrient value except for sugar - are demonstrating that they are not putting much effort into parenting. Is it a surprise that they also don't teach their children to behave? Of course, that conclusion is also hypothetical, and by no means proven by the study, but it does point out another possible interpretation of the data.
I would simply say no child should drink soda. Any kind. No adult for that matter, either. But one's health is one's own decision. Make it informed.
Like anything else, self control and moderation. Yeah, if you let a 5 year old sit down and drink an entire bottle of soda.. doesn't take a rocket scientist or researcher to know the kid will become hyper and the resulting issues that come with hyper activity. Allow the kid a glass or two as a treat may not be a bad idea.

Most of the beverages consumed by too many people in America like Mountain Dew, 7-UP, Brisk Iced Tea and actually most carbonated beverages contain the preservative Calcium Disodium EDTA.

Cauctic Soda (aka Lye) and a couple of chemicals that I am pretty certain are not something that is good for any living person to consume!
I discovered that EDTA is the primary component in the cause of autism, in fact EDTA may be the only thing needed to cause autism.
The behavioral disorders that are caused by these beverages and the EDTA in them is the type of behavior that we all witnessed unfolding before our eyes on TV when Columbine, Virginia Tech, Tucson, Aurora, Newtown and the many more that will come due to the inaction of the FDA and our government.

Nothing I have written has been vetted by CNN because they are paid to ignore stories and information like mine.... I know this because I have spent the past 7 years trying to get CNN to do my story and share what I learned about what essentially amounts to the wholesale genocide of the American people.
More nonsense. People dont listen when they say soda causes obesity, so to ramp up the fear factor they make up something that soda causes violence. Do they think we're stupid.
Listen to the scientists long enough everything will cause violence, everything but people's own selves. Time to stop listening to the scientists and start taking responsibility for oneself. As for the little kids, maybe the parents should stop trying to be the kids' friends and start being a parent. Do a little more parenting and maybe the little tikes won't be quite so violent.
Does the study compensate for socio-economic differences? Or maybe parents who let their kids drink 4 sodas a day, which is expensive, indulgent, unhealthy and unnecessary also follow those same practices through the rest of their child's lives.

If soda is causing young people to be violent, than its a concerted effort on the part of a well organized organization. People of color seem to be constantly in the thick of violence. Thats not to say that young Whites are not. Newtown, Columbine, movie theatre shootings, Gaby Gifford to name a few. We could stop this soda consumption in about a week if we boycotted the manufactures. This won't happen though, because Americans are on the ropes when it comes to sticking together. This is just another attack coming from a different direction and the hatred we have in this country towards African Americans is blinding us to the extent that we can't see who our true enemies are. So sad!
My little niece loves nettle tea and does not like soda and refuses to drink it but whenever I make some nettle tea with different flavors like Thai or mint she gets very excited about it. Nettle tea should be marketed and put in schools which would be healthier than sodas.
Correlation data at best. If you don't have the research for an exact neuro-chemical interaction that causes violence (which is a learned behavior in the first place, try emotions like anger or even aggression) you have nothing better than correlation. We also know there are so many other factors/variables that this research has no control for as they can rarely be separated from "Soda Drinking". These possible factors are; parents who give their children soda are also the most unlikely to create other important boundaries in the home and most likely lack self-discipline as well, soda machine parents are also more likely to have lower educational foundations in children's health as well as other accompanying parenting skills, soda imbibing students are also likely to have poorer nutrition across board which also has high correlation with behavioral issues in children. There are so many of these issues with this research done with Soda drinking kids it cannot even be considered research. That doesn't mean that Soda isn't a terrible curse on our youth and adult populations alike. It simply means if we use poor research and even poorer research reporting to blow up lies to scare everyone into doing the right thing we destroy our credibility and eventually the whole fight to get children and adults to make VERY IMPORTANT changes in their lifestyles to make their lives better in many ways. Shame, shame CNN.
My kid doesn't even like sweets. I'm blessed. It seems obvious to me that highly refined corn sugar, and other man made crap is likely to not be as good for you as say vegetable you grow in your own garden. Call me old fashioned, but I enjoy the stuff I grow, everybody else does too, and it tastes way better than anything you can buy at the store. Just smarten up and eat right . ... .when you can. I know it's not always easy or possible. Limit junk food to nothing to hardly ever. Eat lots of veggies, drink more water, and you should be good. Finally, go for a 20 minute walk every other day.

As we’ve said, the body of science does not support the notion that soft drink consumption is uniquely responsible for the behavior issues referenced in this study.
Why are we even talking about this? There is nothing good in soda. I should invent a fuel additive that makes your car run worse and convince everyone to pour it in their gas tank. All I would need is a catchy slogan and a commercial with sexy women. Hey, I'll be rich!
