Blood clots: 4 things you need to knowSecretary of State Hilary Clinton was hospitalized Sunday for a blood clot that formed after her she fell and suffered a concussion a few weeks ago. The clot was discovered during a follow-up exam related to the concussion, said Clinton's spokesman, Philippe Reines, deputy assistant secretary of state. Clinton, 65, was expected to remain at New York Presbyterian Hospital for the next 48 hours for monitoring and treatment with anticoagulants - drugs that prevent clots from forming or prevent them from growing larger. Reines said Clinton's clot was found in the vein located in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. "It did not result in a stroke, or neurological damage. To help dissolve this clot, her medical team began treating the Secretary with blood thinners," said Clinton's doctors in a written statement.
Blood clots most often develop deep in leg veins, and symptoms are easily missed. The medical term for blood clots developing in the large veins of the leg or pelvis is deep vein thrombosis (DVT). An estimated 2 million Americans develop DVT each year. Here are four things you need to know about blood clots: 1. DVT is not life-threatening (most of the time) Most cases of DVT are simply treated with a blood thinner that breaks up the clot and prevents it from migrating to different areas in the body. However, if left untreated, DVT can result in a pulmonary embolism, which occurs when the blood clot travels from the leg to the lungs. It accounts for nearly 200,000 deaths a year. 2. Travelers have the highest risk A large long-term study published in the journal PLoS One in 2007 found the more frequently a person travels, the higher their risk. This is because blood clots are generally caused by sluggish blood flow through the vein, usually from sitting in cramped positions for long periods of time. Experts say most cases of DVT develop on flights over four hours in length. Some studies show the cabin pressure of an airplane also plays a role. Most people think DVT strikes just older adults, but research shows that women taking birth control pills, people over 6 feet 1 inch tall, and adults under 30 are at increased risk. 3. There are warning signs If your leg, ankle or foot is swelling, cramping or feel warm to the touch, that may be a sign of a DVT blood clot. Also, sudden onset of shortness of breath, anxiety or chest pain may be a warning of pulmonary embolism, or a blockage in a lung. 4. Keep the blood flowing The most important thing you can do to reduce your risk of developing a blood clot is to get up and walk around every 30 to 45 minutes to keep the blood flowing in your legs. If you are stuck at your desk at work, or on an airplane and can't get up, simply pumping your leg/foot or rotating your ankle can help to get the blood moving. Staying hydrated is also essential. On the 15th of this month Agust i was Diagnosis with an Acute DVT in my left leg However the hospital i went was not going to treat me for my DVT at all.Fuhther i had to make the Doctor give me medications while i was in the hospital.All i was given was a pill which was a blood thinner and a little pain meds through IV and sent home.I was also told by the doctors that they just send patients home with an Acute DVT when Doctors are not suppose to do and let alone the doctors was not goung to treat me at all and just send me home.I was not told where the Blood Clot was in my left leg or nothing and the doctors refused to properly treat me for my Acute DVT.After a few days a home i notice i was allergic to the medication i was put on to thin ny blood breakung out with itchy little red bumps.However i went back to another hospital and i was treated even worse and again received no treatment ar all and i inky took an X-RAY and Blood Test.All during this time my husband and i contacted my doctor to let him know whats going on and how i was being treated.Well i got worse as the days was going by Stronger chest,arm,and leg pain,even neck and jaw pain still the hospitals i went to and ny doctor did nothing at all.Now its been 12 days and now i am worse than ever i have more red bumps on my body and now my right leg and and right foot is swollen badly and it hurts badly and yes it feels like a charlie horse just like my left leg did that still has a DVT in it.Now my husband was told by doctor to call him in the morning which is Monday Morning this was Friday that my Doctor told my husband to call back for me.Futher my husband ask for my Doctor to call by his answering service but my doctor refused to call and all my doctor did was delivered messages through the lady that works for him on his answering service when his office is closed.I must contact someone thats above my doctor and the hospitals i went to that are playing with my life and refusing to properly treat me and just sent me home.My life is on the line now i know and was told by many people and people who had what i have that i should have been treated in the hospital and admitted into a hospital for 48 hours or more because of the DVT and then sent home on a Blood Thinner.However i am laying in bed getting the truth out for people to know how some of these doctors are misstreating patients and not giving them the treatment they are suppose to receive from the doctors at the hospital and their doctor.I will not let these doctors play with my life and continue to do this to me and Not No One Knows.People need to know what many doctors are doing now.Also i am truly being profiled and more because of my race,my religion that i do not share with any doctors or anyone at all,and more.The hospitals i have been to and doctors i have seen in these hospital that i been to talked to me with 0 Respect,0 Bedside Manners and like they do not truly care about my health at all.Futhermore this has been going on for years and many patients are affraid to speak out to let people know that many doctors do not care about their patients but they care about the money they are making off patients.All i want is to be treated fair by doctors,be given the full and proper medical treatment and help save my life which is the Doctors Job to do.I also fell a few months ago and hit the back of my head and neck which gave me a concussion with a huge bruse on the back of my neck.My Prayers goes out to Hilary Clinton and i hope you get better with all prayers.
