Marijuana use may raise risk of testicular cancer

Marijuana may double the risk of testicular cancer among young men, particularly tumors that are more severe, according to a new study published in the American Cancer Society's journal, Cancer.

"This is a very consistent finding now that marijuana seems to be associated with the worst kind of testis cancer that occurs in young men ... (it) may well be causal," said study author Victoria Cortessis, an assistant professor of preventive medicine at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles.

Two previous studies in 2009 and 2010 found similar associations.

According to the National Cancer Institute, testicular cancer occurs most commonly in young or middle-aged men. Of the 8,590 new cases estimated in the United States this year, about 360 men will die. The cause of most cases is unknown, according to the American Cancer Society.

The rates of testicular cancer in men are increasing– as much as doubling every 20 to 30 years, Cortessis said. At the same time, marijuana use has increased, often in young males.

"It may be that marijuana use is actually interfering with hormonal signaling in a way that disturbs function of the testis," she said. "That's a possibility - that's something that we can now formulate specific hypotheses about and try to understand."

In the study, researchers examined the self-reported history of recreational drug use among 163 men who had testicular cancer. All were between the ages of 18 and 35 when diagnosed in Los Angeles County between 1986 and 1991.

Researchers asked questions about their family history of cancer and their own use of various drugs, including if they had ever used them and, if so, the years they did so and the average number of times per week of use.

They compared these histories to that of 292 healthy men of the same age, race and ethnicity.

"We saw a pattern of dose response that we didn't expect," Cortessis said. Men who reported long-term usage of marijuana did not face greater risk, she said. The findings suggest "early experimental use," which would be short-term, may trigger increased cancer risk.

"But that is speculation, and something we're going to look into with data in the future," she said.

"... That certainly seems plausible because we know that hormonal signaling governs a great deal of the sexual development of the testis," she added. "It may be that guys who, when they're still pretty young, going through puberty, if they are experimenting with marijuana, it may be that that is the most harmful period when this could happen, but that's only one possible interpretation of those data."

The findings suggest that the possible effects be taken into consideration both in personal decisions regarding recreational drug use, in addition to times when marijuana and its derivatives are being considered as medicinal treatment for young males.

Too small of a sample size and too rare of a disease - at least the particular form of testicular cancer they found a link to - for this to be of much concern or validity at this point. Heck, half of what we eat has higher and better established links to many cancers than this study found. They keep reaching. For a more interesting study which reviewed scores of studies over the recent years, read the big Cancer Study out of Madrid, which found cannabanoids have high cancer inhibiting properties for a variety of cancers. Makes sense given out of the thousands of studies over the years, still no real clear link between pot and any cancer, except for a few small correlations like this study.

Why is 163 patients with cancer versus 292 controls too small a sample size? I do agree with your point that it's correlative data, and not the result of an experimental manipulation. Also, in this study cocaine was negatively associated with cancer.

learn statistics. if the reports say there is a statistical increase then there is. you can have a sample size of 20 and get valid correlation.

One is curious why many oncologist prescribe cannabis for cancer patients if there is any real correlation between use and cause of cancer. And why only testicular and not lung? And is it only smoking? What about edibles? Every time I see "maybe" or "possibly" in a article like this, I have to ask why release the alleged findings if they are not finite? What does it prove? NOTHING

" Men who reported long-term usage of marijuana did not face greater risk, she said." Early experimental use is known to be full of confounding factors that correlate into problems not associated with marijuana. Virtually no chance this is a causation if long term heavy use does not do it as well

I'm generally in the corner of keeping pot illegal, aka just because booze is horrible for us isn't a good reason to bring in something else that MAY be harmful. BUT, this article and research is nothing more than pure speculation and guesswork. Alcohol hurts the liver, smoking cigarettes hurts the lungs, drinking excessive amount of water is fatal. Everything in life has risks. Interesting article. Prior studies showed testicular atrophy and uterine and ovarian hypoplasia. The think here that grabbed my attention is they are suggesting it may be "interfering with hormonal signaling". I find this odd knowing that the cannabinoid receptors in the human body, are located in the brain and in the testes. This may need further study.

Dr. Donald Abrams, professor of clinical medicine at the University of California-San Francisco, was not convinced of marijuana's link to testicular cancer, telling HealthDay that if true, there should have been spikes in the disease among California males during the 1960s and 70s but there were no such reported rate increases.

"If there were a true cause-and-effect relationship, one would see blips in testicular cancer rates associated with greater use of cannabis," he said.

I was watching CNN a while back, and Soledad O'Brien passingly reported " Marijuana, which we all know is 70% MORE CARCINOGENIC THAN CIGARETTES"...She just threw that in there, like it is no big deal. It is total lies...who in the world believes that Cannabis is worse for you than cigarettes? Cigarettes have all kinds of poisons added to them. But some people will believe it, because TV said so. Meanwhile there are countless sources which prove that Cannabis cures cancer. It is the definition of hypocrisy.

I had testicular cancer and smoked about a dozen times in high school. Really regretting that now haha. I've been cancer-free for over a year now though! Obviously not my case nor the 163 people in the study represents causation, but it does make me wonder if that was the cause.

Nothing surprising about this at all. Being a cancer researcher all my life, I look upon legalizing marijuanas as one of the stupidesh mentalities existing amongst the public who frequently get carried away by talk rather than science. This is a gateway drug to other drugs and its risks including various types of cancer far outweighs the benefits. There is nothing that marijuana can do which other much safer drugs already in the market cannot.

If you lied any worse than this one might actually think you were 11 instead of 13 and full of it.

OMG Did you just say "Gateway drug"? Get a clue... Get a life. Way to carry on the mantra of Government and big Pharma. I bet I know who signs your paycheck.

Stop trying to scare us. The scare tactics didn't work in the 80's and isn't going to work today.

This is not an article pro or anti legalization. The point of the article is not the agenda you have. It is refuting the ignorant propaganda that pot is not harmful and won't hurt you. It is harmful and it WILL hurt you. Whether or not it is legalized, the truth of its status AS A DRUG with benefits and side effects needs to be known and understood. Get off your pot boxes. And if you are smart, get off the pot. And while you are at it, the tobacco and booze. Sheesh.
