Some women get new benefits under ObamacareBeginning Wednesday, all new health insurance plans will be required to provide eight preventive health benefits to women for free. The benefits include contraceptives, breast-feeding supplies and screenings for gestational diabetes, sexually transmitted infections and domestic violence, as well as routine check-ups for breast and pelvic exams, Pap tests and prenatal care. The services are a requirement of the health care reform law Congress passed in 2010. A new report released Monday by the Department of Health and Human Services estimates 47 million women are in health plans that must offer the new benefits. 10 lesser known effects of the health care law “Women will be able to have access to essential preventive services that will provide early detection and screening for those situations where they’re most at risk, and also provide opportunities to care and services that they need as wives and mothers,” Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Maryland, said at a press conference Monday. An additional 14 free preventative service benefits for women have already taken effect as a requirement of health care reform, including mammograms to screen for breast cancer in women over 40 and screenings for osteoporosis in women over age 60. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius trumpeted the need for the reforms. “Before the health care law, many insurers didn’t even cover basic women’s health care. Other care plans charged such high copayments that they discouraged many women from getting basic preventive services. So as a result, surveys show that more than half of the women in this country delayed or avoided preventive care because of its cost,” Sebelius said Monday. “That’s simply not right.” Not all insured women will have access to the new services. Certain insurance plans that existed prior to the passage of health care reform may have “grandfathered” status and may be exempt from offering the benefits. “You may or may not have them offered to you, and if they’re offered, you may have to pay cost sharing. In other words, you may have to pay a portion of the costs,” said Gary Claxton, a vice president on health policy at the Kaiser Family Foundation. It’s not immediately clear how many women are in such plans. A 2011 survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation found 56% of covered workers are in “grandfathered” plans. Experts anticipate the number of those plans will shrink as significant changes are made to them, resulting in a loss of “grandfathered” status. Women can call their employers to ask whether they are in “grandfathered” health insurance plans, Claxton said. |

Sorry guys... these benefits aren't free. No matter how noble, everyone's costs are going to go up (even though the benefits are not for everyone).
Because health care costs in this country AREN'T spiraling out of control already?
Just like how your medical decisions AREN'T made by a bunch of "claims processors" with no medical training in an office somewhere?
Yeah, because having a sick baby doesn't cost tax payers a dime and protecting your mama's tatas is a waste of money. Jerk. Insurance companies covered ED meds (you know the little blue pill because jerks like you can't get it up on your own) WITHOUT the government telling them to, but the insurance companies refuse to cover having babies or not having babies unless they are forced to. Medicine always has been and always been discriminatory and the MEN always win. Stop whining because of tiny changes and recognize that every baby that is born healthy instead of sick saves the PUBLIC a TON of money, you sniveling SOB.
Preventing disease can save money. Why don't insurers and other people get it?
To play devil's advocate.... Viagra fixes something that doesn't work. BC pills stop something that works fine and makes it not work... Also, men's BC is not covered. Why not?
ALL preventative screenings should be free for everyone, including STD screening, colon cancer screening, skin screenings for melanoma. Catching and treating diseases early, and certainly preventing or minimizing health problems for the unborn child should be a no-brainer.
And yes, we as a society should pay the bill for preventative screenings, because if we don't, we will certainly pay the much more expensive bill down the road.
I *prefer* to pay for them, for all American women, free of charge to them. With my taxes. It benefits us all.
Art, it's because men' s BC is not perscription.
Why are Obama and Pelosi turning into draconian hypocrites against Medical Marijuana Patients? It's time for new leadership – HOPE 4 CHANGE 2012
We know they aren't free, we don't expect them to be free and we don't want them free. I'm a female with asthma, so guess what, I can't get insurance. When I had insurance with former employer (who took away benefits for employees as a cost cut) I paid $250 a paycheck for my health benefits. That's because I have a pre existing condition. Now I get DENIED insurance when I apply. I'm willing to pay $500 a month and I still don't qualify for health insurance. I have never expected to get free health insurance or expect someone to pay for my health care costs. My medication alone costs $350 a motnh and that is for ONE prescription. I was born with this condition and I do everything in my power to avoid anything that can trigger an asthma attack. I go to Planned Parenthood for birth control because i'm responsible and they also conduct my lady exams. And now people want to get rid of that because they "don't believe in what Planned Parenthood does." Because they think all they do is kill fetuses. My treatment is free and I ALWAYS donate $20 for my services. So you are taking away the only other option I have to be a responsible adult. When will you people get off your high horse and realize that we don't want free healthcare. We want to be able to PAY for it. Why not focus your negative attention to drug addicted welfare recipients and imprisoned criminals that recieve free healcare that YOU are paying for.
Expound on this point please. If you truly believe this bs than offer up something besides your unfounded cynicism.
I have a question, for all of us who have Grandfathered insurance policies. BC for women under Obama care is going to be free? yet because I have insurance, and always paid dearly for it, my daughter will not get the same BC benifits. I was told by my phrmacists that because I already have insuranace Im grandfathered and do not get the same benifits(free). Looks like responsiablility doesnt pay and Im going to get taxed more!!! Im not rich and I have always worked, been a single mom and most of the time worked 2 jobs to make ends meet and now I get more money taken out of my check to pay for someone else's responsiablities, or here is a though maybe I should just quit working or just work one job and see how many handouts I can get.
John Bonifield-why are you calling the Health Care Act Obamacare. Stupid tool!!!
Tools are useful.
You are not.
http://reason.com/archives/2012/04/10/no-obamacare-wont-reduce-the-deficit
A lot of people have their misgivings about ACA law and they should. We already pay for uninsured. We already pay for those that are able to afford insurance and chose not to buy. There are people that cannot buy because of preexisting conditions that have money for insurance but cannot get coverage. The ACA law is not perfect if the lawmakers in Washington can get together and improve it that would be an excellent use of time and resources.
Note to Dems: The cost of Obamacare, ab initio, is far, far more than the cost of covering the uninsured, thus eliminating that rationale for ramming through a 2,000 page bit of legislation no one has read.
Also – the cost of illegal immigrants in border states is substantial. Funny how that cost doesn't justify enforcing immigration law, but does, somehow, justify, forcing everyone to buy insurance, to better cover the costs of illegal immigrants, who are already covered... and who won't necessarily be kicking into the new scheme to buy insurance... in order to lessen the impact of... them.
Sigh.
Now the pre-existing condition problem is solved by this law. They can now be covered, and thus not bankrupt themselves and stop paying taxes. They can get basic healthcare instead of leaving things until it is too late to help, and they become permanently disabled or dead.
John Flavor: The CBO disagrees with you. THe ACA saves money over time. As for illegals, this President has deported more in 3.5 years than President Bush did in 8. We also have more border patrol than we had under the previous President. The ACA does NOT cover illegals. The problem about the health care for those already here and not deported is still there, yes, but we're always going to have that to some extent.
I applaud you on this comment about improving the Healthcare act. This is the first I've seen anyone mention improving it. Instead they're all about repealing it which is a waste of time. We are in desperate need of it. Government (bipartisan) should work to improve it. We are the UNITED STATES, let's see our government show the world that we can get something done and then work together to tweak and improve healthcare. Or am I just a dreamer. Wait I think I've heard that somewhere before!!!
I go every year for a well woman exam and this is the first year it was free, i did not have to pay a co-payment of $25.00. I can see the benefits already,Obamacare its a good deal.
Meaning a good deal for you because everyone else paid for it.
Meanwhile, who's paying for my prostate exam?
Oh yeah – just me. Because equal protection only means freebies for chicks.
Cute.
Our insurance already paid for prostate exams.
its not free...I had to pay it for you.
I know with my insurance there is a yearly well women's exam that's completely covered and there is also a one that's covered covered for a yearly check up for anyone. My yearly mammograms are also free. However, the cost that I pay for private insurance for my son and I is astronomical. So it balances out.
You paid for it, in one way or another. If your premium hasn't gone up yet you can bet it will.
I'm really glad to help pay for your check up. Maybe its because I'm not religious but I feel its our social duty to make sure that everyone in our society is healthy and safe. I know personally I think this is a much better use of my tax dollars than corp. welfare, nation building and tax credits for billionaires. But you know, I don't have Jesus telling me whats right and wrong so that probably the real problem.
Awesome!! And no, the benefits aren't "free." If we're not in this plan, we still get to pay. HOWEVER, and all you "oh it's socialism" whiners take note: if we don't offer free preventive care, we will offer free sick care because people who could have caught something early will wait until they are very sick. THAT is much more costly to everyone. People need to get off their high horses here and follow Christ's teachings... love one another and take care of your fellow man. I would much rather pay for a $90 pap smear than a $18,000 hysterectomy followed by $500,000 worth of cancer treatments. Wouldn't you??
Well said, Kaite. People don't get that there is extreme value in PREVENTING things from getting bad. We will all save in the long run.
Nice try, but screening only reduces the cost for those who have a condition being screened. Even a commentator on NPR admitted that the only preventative treatment that actually reduces overall costs is childhood immunization.
Thanks Katie. An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.
I watched a dear friend die at 62 because she did not have access to preventative care. She and her husband worked full-time for a company which did not provide health care benefits and they made just enough to cover their rent, food, car gas/insurance. She never got preventative care and only went to the county hospital when her breast cancer was advanced and obvious to anyone. The dr. who saw her first said the tumor looked like something he'd seen on his trips to 3rd world countries.
I feel guilty because I would have given her the money for preventative care if I had only known. America is better than this. She should not have died this way–with preventative care, she would have at least had a chance at survival. RIP, Lois. We miss you.
Free = everyone else pays.
Free Benefits for Women = Men get nothing, pay relatively more for less.
Funny how 'Equal Protection' doesn't really mean that, eh?
For the blind Obama supporters who conflate the idea of health care access for all with *this* legislation... keep an eye on the costs over the next few years.
Then wail and gnash your teeth that you were too damned ignorant to vote for Ron Paul before the zombies came.
Yeah right! Most women make less money than most men and also have to deal with the results of men and their pleasures – usually as a single mother you JERK! SO GET OVER IT!!!
@Tammy, women only make less money because they choose to have kids and take time off to raise them and other stupid things like give up on pursuing an education for the sake of a relationship, or even worse, choose the wrong man to have kids with. You have a problem with what you make? You only have yourself to blame.
Crocky, women make less for the doing the same work with the same education level and same experience level as their male counterparts.
However, do note that my insurance plan already paid for many men's health care basics and screenings, and women's premiums were already a higher rate than men's. So not only did women make less money, they paid more for their insurance, then paid more for their basic care.
I think we should definitely look into making sure men's basic care and children's basic care is also co-pay free. Insurance companies already calculate such costs into their premiums.
Speaking of zombies, how is Ron Paul doing? Haven't heard much of him lately.
Men get a lot out of having healthy women around. They get to keep their wives, daughters, mothers. They get a chance to raise their children in a 2-parent household.
Does John Flavor not have a mother?
Actually, men pay less for healthcare since they are unable to get pregnant. Also, contraceptives, which benefit a man, too, were not previously covered. Before you make statements, try checking them out. If you can waste time on here, you can educate yourself.
Men get healthy mothers of their children. They get healthier babies as a result.
FREE FREE FREE.....Thank God all mighty.......EVERYTHING is FREE
See you in Obama's Hope Camps for your re-education.
Also, probably you're an anti-semite and have bad breath.
Fascist!
Maybe free was not a good choice of words.I didnt have to pay for my exam that's all. I'm sure men will have free screening also have you check?
As far as I know, they do get free prostate exams. Bend over and cough! 😛
I like to think of myself as a conservative democrat; however, THIS is ridiculous. Nothing is FREE. It will cost all of us in the end. All of us "working folk", that is.
Except we're already paying for most of it. The major cost reduction will be seen in lowering payouts to lawyers and lawsuits. In other developed countries people don't feel forced to sue when they have an accident, because there is no worry about ongoing medical bills that will wipe out a family's savings and take away dreams for the kids. Here, surviving an accident often means a lawsuit is the only option – and all our extra cash goes to paying lawyers while doctor's pay for malpractice insurance. When medical care is universal the need for this ridiculous law suit system will disappear.
But on top of finances, another core issue here is quality of life, reducing the worry and agony people go through wondering how they will pay for medical care. This works well in other countries where not only is total cost on medicine cheaper, but stress levels are far lower.
The only real difference we face that these other countries don't is our relatively open immigration, which allows in a much larger body of poor costly patients. Countries with single payer systems saw the true cost of such immigration policies years ago and cut back on immigration to maintain costs. It is likely that the same will happen here once the costs become clearer.
It's actually an interesting political division in the US which has the same people opposing free-flow immigration opposing national health. In fact, it is actually the existence of a national health system which has allowed other countries to realize the costs of accepting poor and uneducated immigrants and resulted in their having far stricter immigration policies than the US.
john, hang it up, you are first of all wrong, miss-informed and out numbered!
I am not going to debate anyone about the benefits & costs for the ACA Act (ObamaCare).
Any time somebody rams 2000 plus
I still think that if I have to help subsidize prenatal care for those women who choose to have kids, then abortions should be covered too. If one reproductive option is covered, then ALL should be, INCLUDING abortion.
I kissed my way up to VP at a health insurance company. Now I take over $500,000 of your health care dollars for NO VALUE ADDED to your health care. And that’s just me. Now think about how many other VPs, Directors, Managers, etc. are at my company alone. Now multiply that by thousands of others at hundreds of other health insurance companies. From 10 to 25% of your health care dollars go towards administration that adds NO VALUE to your health care. But my company’s PAC dollars will continue to fool you little people into thinking that a single payer system will be bad. Little people like you are so easy to fool. Little people also don’t realize that a single payer system is the ONLY system that would allow little people (as an entire country) to negotiate better health care prices. Little people don’t realize that the Medical Cartels already know that. And that is the reason why the Medical Cartels spend so much PAC money from the hospitals and doctors lobbying against a single payer system. Some little people say that a single payer system would cost you little people more. But if that were true, then wouldn’t the hospitals and doctors WANT that extra money? Yes they would. So why do the Medical Cartels lobby against a single payer system? It’s because the Medical Cartels know it would allow little people to negotiate better health care prices. And that’s what the Medical Cartels are afraid of. Period.
But us big wigs at insurance companies, hospitals, and pharmacy companies don’t ever need to worry about health care no matter what it costs. We get our health care paid for one way or another by you little people. And we get the little people that work at our companies to contribute to our PACs. And us big wigs say it’s to protect the little peoples’ jobs. But in reality it would be in the little peoples’ best interest to NOT contribute to the PAC. Again, little people are so easy to be fooled. I won’t ever have to worry about losing my job with so many little people being brain washed by the Medical Cartels’ PAC money. Not only that, the Medical Cartels’ PAC money is used to elect so many republicans that will never allow a single payer system. Republicans have always fought against any meaningful health care reform. But that’s what our Medical Cartels’ PACs pay them for. Politicians can be bought so easily.
Pretty soon the only people that will be able to afford health care is us big wigs. And that’s the way it should be. We don’t want you little people using up the resources when we need them. And once again, I thank you little people for capping my SS tax at the $106,800 level. Now I only pay 1.3% SS tax and you little people pay 6.2%. Also, thank you for extending my tax breaks. I’m using the extra money on my vacation houses.
I hope someone burns down yoru Vacation homes that we all Little people Pay for, Then take your head and shove it up ur pathetic ass... Have a nice day,
*Your*
I am not going to debate anyone about the benefits & costs for the ACA Act (ObamaCare).
Any time somebody rams 2000 plus-plus page bill through Congress, I DON'T WANT it.
You can argue about doctors, hospitals & insurance companies until Hells freezes.
I want to get the right treatment so I can stay alive, stay well & have a reasonably good life.
A couple of points, a lot of bills are long, several have been longer than this bill. When you are dealing with health care reform for a nation, it's going to be long, there are a lot of legalities that have to be covered. Another point is, any bill that takes 8 months to pass isn't being "rammed" anywhere. Everyone had plenty of time to read it, it was posted online as well. If your congress critter didn't bother reading it, then I would be asking them WHY NOT rather than blaming the bill.
Third: if you want to "I want to get the right treatment so I can stay alive, stay well & have a reasonably good life." then you WANT the ACA, unless we can get universal health care through, or medicare for all this is the best we're going to get right now. I agree, Universal health care would have been better, but with the congress as it was, and as it is, that's not a possibility. We can work on improving this bill as time goes on. It's better than what we had before.
Look, here's my problem with this, and it has nothing against women. I'll make this short, how come nobody seems to realize that a country in debt should not be adding benefits, they should be cutting them (or at least be cutting funding from elsewhere that may not affect a mass amount of people). Our nation's debt is spiraling out of control and nobody in the government seems to give a flying crap about it. The only spending I would accept from our government officials would be directed to a place that would offer some sort of job growth in the private sector, because in a sense the government would be getting their moneys worth in the long term through taxes, vs providing free benefits to people who aren't contributing (not through any fault of their own, given the shape of the economy) while gaining absolutely nothing in return financially.
Daniel, the part you're missing is that the government is paying for all these benefits. They are requiring people to have health insurance (i.e. participate in the free market economy of health care, not government run healthcare) just like they require car insurance. People who can't afford will get some assistance (that the government does pay for). HOWEVER, if people are regularly screened and checked-up rather than showing up extremely ill (and the government picking up the tab for their uncovered illness) then money is SAVED in the long run. The GAO has run the numbers and this is not a huge contributor to the deficit (as the republicans would have you wrongly believe).
Hope that helps.
You are right Anon, providing preventative healthcare far outweighs the cost of providing aid for those who are already suffering from a full blown illness. It just gets to me that the government can't seem to be able to get an appropriate budget set in place that would at the very least start pulling us out of debt. I don't favor either the Republicans or Democrats, because as far as I'm concerned, they are both the problem.
You might be able to make people purchase insurance but I doubt you will change their behavior. Some people NEVER go to the doctor. Not because they can't afford it but because they are stupid and think once you go, you get something. Old people are especially like this. I doubt some people will take advantage of preventative care.
For those complaining that men get nothing, that is not true. Men get free screenings as well on plans that aren't grandfathered in, this article however just wasn't about those. Men get free cancer screenings, diabetes screenings, heart screenings etc too. As for the contraception, well that benefits both genders. And yes someone is paying for it, the people paying for their premiums, the same as always. Just some things no longer cost *extra*.
Men get life from the women who give birth to them. That's a big enough benefit.
SMACKED ASS!!
Timmy Suckle makes some very good points and I too have had a career in healthcare including working for Blue Shield, a mid sized hospital and a pharmacy related company. The only sensible way for us to go is to a nationalized healthcare plan. Or another way of putting it, expand Medicare for everyone and stop duplicating the costs of administration, advertising and making the fat cats fatter. And to those of you who refer to free healthcare, it is not free. Under Obamacare and Medicare, people pay premiums every month. And depending on your age, and if you are on an individual policy, they are not cheap and benefits are scaled back, unless you are covered under an employers group policy .
And what people seem to forget is that even with a national health system you can have private options. In Australia over 50% of the population carries additional private insurance by choice, but the TOTAL SYSTEM, public plus private, still costs less than in the US, and Australians are some of the healthiest people in the world. Good, decent national health plus top up options allowed. Yes, there's still arguing in Australia; people by nature are never satisfied. But the overall good can be maximized and looking at the systems that work is the only way.
If you don't think the health care system needed overhauling, have a child delivered in a hospital and then check your itemized bill.
I have fairly good insurance, mostly paid for by my employer, and the bill for my child's birth after insurance was nearly $2k. This was a normal birth. When I asked for an itemized bill (why did I have to ask?), I saw things like $8 for a single ibuprofen. Shocking to say the least.
iF i HERE ONE MORE WORD ABOUT oBAMA CARE GIVING TO US...
It's called screw us from Obama... It doesn't give us anything . We pay for this crap. We pay to have that NWord jerk sit there and feel all pompous and bloated with feel good while he takes all our money and makes false promises and empty placating jest...as hew takes more money, as he defrauds us and scalps us and gives all ourt money away while giving America away. First thing we do is repeal Obama care and BAN the word Obama from all media and tabloids...
Please take your racist rant elsewhere. Thank you.
In an health insurance licensing class that I was in a couple of years ago the instructor explained how health insurance works. Health insurance companies provide care to the healthiest of people. Think about it. It's mostly people that are employed that have access to health insurance. For people to be employed they need to be healthy enough to work. Healthy people have lower health care costs so the insurance companies are able to make a profit (often a huge profit ). Once we're no longer healthy enough to buy health insurance, if you're lucky, the Government starts "insuring" you. As most of us know, there are many people that fall through the cracks and are unable to get any health insurance. Government "health insurance", Medicaid, Medicare, Veterans Benefits, covers the unhealthiest – so they're the most expensive to insure. No profit there so health insurance companies don't want to insure them. If we had a single payer system the profit and the loss would even out. The ACA certainly isn't perfect but it's a start!
I agree with your post – as a female who was laid off from her job 2 years ago I've been unable to get private health insurance from any company because of a pre-existing condition. This new provision is wonderful for those who are lucky enough to have insurance but for those of us who for some small reason are denied coverage, this provision means nothing.
I WANT insurance.
I WILL happily pay for insurance.
Please find me a company who will provide it. And don't tell me to wait a couple of years until the other provisions kick in. In my state (Florida) the governor has announced that HE doesn't intent to comply with the mandate to set up any of the required plans. Thanks a lot Gov. Scott. May you – and your wife – find yourself in my shoes.
We can't lower the deficit until there is money coming in, taxes have to be raised. I completely agree that taxes should be raised on the wealthiest 3%, they now pay a smaller percentage than the rest of us. As for raising taxes on the wealthy hurting the economy, multiple nonpartisan reports have said that is a lie. Large corporations are reporting record profits & paying less taxes than they have in decades, if their not hiring now, what makes you think they'll start? Furthermore, I've read multiple studies, papers, etc which have stated that the President actually has very little influence on the economy, for that you have to look to the legislative branch. How can we expect them to accomplish anything when they are so busy fighting? Our country was founded on the idea of compromise for the greater good, the government was designed to give people of different views a forum to come together and work together to benefit the nation as a whole. Historically the greatest politicians are those that were able to reach across the aisle to get things accomplished. Unfortunately no one is interested in compromise anymore, so nothing gets done.
I don't think anyone was ever interested in compromise, and the system doesn't support it. Changing the system would be extremely difficult (require ammendments that are at this point near impossible to pass) so you may want to just except the unpleasant reality.
Absolutely right. Ideology is the enemy of clear thinking. And most of what I hear from the ACA opponents is vitriolic ideological nonsense. There are things to criticize in the law. But they have done nothing to try to improve it. They have spent 2.5 years attempting to scrap the whole thing without any plan for any reform to exchange it for. The same way they treated Social Security and now want to treat Medicare. But the rest of the world must go on without them. If we wait for them to be happy, we will soon arrive back at the stone age where cooperation is for suckers and people care only for themselves.
We just got some bad news, a cousin is having her tongue biopsied. Good chance it is cancer, the bad news she has no insurance, because of other problems she can't work and the state she lives in has decided that they don't want to join "Obamacare". So she will be getting minimal care, the state only covers women with children and not all of them. But don't worry you all won't have to pay for her care, she has a plan she intends to take her own life if it is cancer. That should make everyone feel better, not her grandchildren, or her sister or brothers or daughters, but hey this is America, you can't have everything.
Margaret, I'm so sorry to hear about your cousin's troubles. Could she move in with a relative or friend in a different, health-insurance friendly state to get care? I am just appalled that our safety-net systems are so bad in some cases that people feel they would rather be dead. I hope a way can be found to help your cousin find a reason to live.
God bless Obama....
As a husband, brother, dad and a son, I am happy we are taking care of women and girls better at a hospital.
And bless you for saying this. I can't understand what's going on with all these people who are so angry about women getting free preventative care. Do none of them have females in their lives that they care about? Or are all of them the lucky ones who are able to easily afford it on their own, and to h*ll with the other women in this country?
Herrol, it is people like you who hate the messenger on ACA not the message on the benefits and overall savings!! You are an IDIOT!!! Would it have been better if it was established by McCain or Sarah?
OBAMA 2012 – GET OVER IT HERROL AND THE REST OF YOUR RACIISTS FRIENDS!!!
To ALL who are so afraid of the " socialist" healthcare reform: I grew up in the socialist USSR. What we had was a " all inclusive" free health care ( yes the taxes where high) with a MANDATORY annual complete check up for all categories of citizens. Any chronic illness would be addressed with an extensive medical leave with the garanteed ability to come back to work, and though the professional unions you will be sponsored to get treated at the resorts on the Black, Baltic, Caspian seas or in the mountain resorts.... And we had a constutional right to 25 calendar days of vacation..... And the ability for ANY mother to stay on maternity leave up to a full year with 100% salary paid.... Or up to 3 years with the garantee to come back to her old job. America is a truly a great country, but it can be even better if people start to realize that the concept of a healthy nation has to be a state program. Health is not something we can control all the time- look at gravely I'll kids, victims of accidents or oncology patients, I can't understand the irritation of all healthy folks, who are complaining about " paying for those without coverage". Just because you have insurance from you job, you can loose the moment you loose that job.
What I love is all the people complaining about the cost of supplying medical care, when the cost of a public school education for each child is more. Yet you don't see this kind of movement to repeal public education. Every citizen needs or may need health care. Many citizens can be 100% sure they will never need public education.
Nice to see that it is the law and that your premiums are going towards the front preventative end of coverage versus the disease end. So insurers will also win out. God only know how many years of quality life this will give to the millions of Moms -daughters – sisters -aunts – coworkers and best friends.... Bills like this make me proud..... Here is that Hope and Change.
What isn't widely known is that insurance companies actually pushed for many of these changes. They have wanted to provide free contraception for years but knew it would be politically unpopular to do so. If it were mandated they would duck the criticism while gaining the benefits. And it is beneficial to them because providing free contraception saves them lots of money. At the price of covering the cost of one unplanned pregnancy hundreds of women can be provided birth control. They were planning on pocketing the difference but the new health care law requires that they spend 80-85% of their income on health care and refund their customers the difference. While the birth control mandate allows them to increase their profit margin much of the savings actually goes back to their customers.
There's no doubt that birth control saves us all money, so the idea that anyone is "paying" for it makes no sense. Pregnancy is very costly, and, on average, a child attending public schools costs tax payers about $13,000 a year. If you can afford not to use birth control do it on your own dime – pay for the privilege of a special expensive plan that doesn't cover it, and then pay an extra $13,000 in taxes for every child after your 2nd.
And yet their are still clueless ignoramuses in this country who are agains ACA law. This country has become a bunch of selfish bloodless money grubbing freaks. Our new national anthem should be "I Me Mine" (written by George Harrison). Listen to the song and you'll see why. Can't wait to retire and get the hell out of here....
Wow, wonderful blog structure! How lengthy have you ever been blogging for? you make running a blog look easy. The full glance of your website is wonderful, as smartly as the content!
I already know the merry band of gop flunkies are dumb, but why are 99.9% of the gop men having a hissy fit. Ya' just can't fix stupid.
I'm actually shocked pre-natal care is free. Although important, I think that would further encourage the ones that should not be having kids to have them.
That's why we also need birth control to be free and easily accessible. And to charge people for benefits, like public schools, if they have more than 2 children. And to make getting pregnant and having a child while on any benefit program an automatic exclusion.
What about the MANDATORY two dollars per month hidden in fine print that americans will be paying to the family planning org. for birth control & ABORTIONS?
And what about the 100 million or so who do not have any sort of healthcare? Who can't afford ANY sort of healthcare? How do we benefit from this new 'benefit?'
THANK YOU MR. PRESIDENT, FOR MYSELF, MY DAUGHTERS, GRANDAUGHTERS AND YES EVEN MY INFANT GREAT GRANDAUGHTER.
Rates don't have to go up if insurance company profits go down. That would be the real triumph of the ACA, wouldn't it.
You can thank me later for PAYING FOR YOUR HEALTHCARE!! You think this stuff comes from nowhere? No, EVERYONE IS PAYING FOR YOUR HEALTHCARE NOW. IT is NOT a RIGHT to receive healthcare - YOu want it? You pay for it!!
Well, my grandfathered plan just cost me $174 and change for a mammogram. Beyond the discomfort, that is another medical bill that our private insurance doesn't help much with. The preventive colonoscopy for my husband is ringing up a bill of $600.00. It cost $3,000 plus. That is profitable for the medical providers. One of the reasons they charge such high prices, I believe, is because insurance providers negotiate down from those prices. Medicaid and workers' comp are worse. I don't want to tell my husband about the cost for fear that he won't go through any more health care. He had the test because he lost 20 pounds that he can ill afford to lose in the last year.
It is very easy to complain about paying for "someone else's" healthcare costs when you don't want for anything and have health insurance provided by your employer. It is also easy to not worry about your health when you're male and have all those things. But when you're a woman and would avoid having a mammogram to save $ because you don't have health insurance instead of having one, well then it is quite a different matter. Breast cancer doesn't care if you have insurance or not. If you have a mother (which I'm certain that 100% of us did at one time or another...) then you should on principle, support more coverage and access to women's health services for all women. I understand people might not think that the ACA is perfect but we can at least all agree that women's health should be a priority. Otherwise, why donate your $ and time to these charities like Susan G. Komen if youre going to lambast the health care system for trying to screen more women? Seems kind of pointless. Save the tatas!

Just because these preventative services are required to be *offered*... does that mean we are required to HAVE to take them? I know that most people don't agree with my personal choice to forgo pelvic exams for personal reasons, but it's still my body and my choice to make that call. Is this something that I'm going to lose the freedom to say no to under the Obamacare law?

To ALL who are so anxious about the “communist" health awareness change: I experienced childhood in the communist USSR? What we had was a “complete" free medicinal services (yes the charges where high) with a MANDATORY yearly finish examination for all classes of nationals. Any perpetual ailment might be tended to with a broad medicinal leave with the guaranteed capacity to return to work, yet despite the fact that the proficient unions you will be supported to get treated at the resorts on the Black, Baltic, and Caspian oceans or in the mountain resorts.... What's more we had a constutional right to 25 schedule days of vacation..... Also the capability for ANY mother to stay on maternity surrender over to a full year with 100% compensation paid.... Then again up to 3 years with the guarantee to return to her old occupation. America is a sincerely an incredible nation, yet it could be shockingly better if individuals begin to understand that the idea of a sound country must be a state program. Health is not something we can control constantly take a gander at gravely I'll kids, casualties of mishaps or oncology patients, I can't comprehend the disturbance of all sound people, who are whining about " paying for those without scope". Only in light of the fact that you have protection from you work, you can detached the minute you detached that occupation.
