Whooping cough cases approaching highest levels in half a century2012 might be a record year for whooping cough in the United States if midyear trends continue. Nearly 18,000 cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention so far this year - the highest rates in five years. "That's more than twice as many as we had at the at the same time last year," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC. "We may need to go back to 1959 to find a year with as many cases reported by this time so far, " she said Thursday. Pertussis is a highly contagious illness caused by a bacterium called Bordetella pertussis. It easily spreads from person to person when people cough or sneeze. It starts out with symptoms very similar to a cold, but a week or two later, a violent cough develops. It's better known as whooping cough because of the "whooping" sound those infected make when they are violently coughing over and over again and try to inhale. The cough can last for weeks, and children can cough so hard and rapidly that blood vessels can burst. They have difficulty eating, drinking and breathing. Young children are particularly at high risk for serious complications. Schuchat says so far nine babies have died from pertussis this year.  She adds that the highest rates of illness have been seen in babies younger than 1, and half of those cases have been infants younger than 3 months old. Whooping cough is vaccine preventable, but newborns can't get the first dose of vaccine until they are 2 months. Then they need four more vaccinations before they turn 7 to get full protection. This is why young children are highly dependent on the people close to them to be vaccinated so they don't pass the disease on to them. "We strongly urge pregnant women and all who will be around babies to be vaccinated. Infants often get pertussis from a family member or household member," said Schuchat. The latest CDC data suggest only 8% of adults get a booster vaccine against pertussis. Schuchat says many states are seeing higher than expected cases of pertussis. One of the states hit hard in this wave of disease is Washington. In April, the Washington State Department of Health declared an epidemic . The department is reporting 3,014 cases as of July 14 - a 1,300% increase compared with the same time in 2011, when they reported 219 cases. Health Secretary Mary Selecky said: "We are seeing the largest number of cases in our state since the early 1940s." Wisconsin is reporting 3,022 confirmed and probable cases so far in 2012. Schuchat says pertussis cases go up and down in waves. She says if the number of cases continue to grow, "we may be on track for record high pertussis rates this year."  The last time whooping cough rates were climbing in the U.S. was in 2010, when 27,550 cases of pertussis were reported to the CDC. In addition to high rates of illness among of babies, new data published Thursday in the CDC's "Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report," shows high rates of whooping cough among 13- to 14-year-old adolescents in Washington. Schuchat says this is something health officials are seeing nationwide as well and is different from previous pertussis outbreaks. Why this is happening isn't entirely clear. Schuchat suggests waning of immunity or a weakening of the protection over time might be part of the what's contributing to these teens getting sick. Health officials acknowledge that vaccines are not perfect, but they do provide the best protection against whooping cough. So the CDC is emphasizing the importance of young children getting their five pertussis vaccinations, then getting the recommended booster shots between 11 and 12 and that adults who will be around babies also getting vaccinated. "In 2010, only 8% of adults had any history of receiving a Tdap booster," said Schuchat. She suggests that clinicians who see patients with a persistent cough consider pertussis as a diagnosis. Then she says doctors should "be proactive with treatment, especially with pregnant women, infants and others who are around infants."

there are thousands of poorly informed parents now days that claim that all vaccines are dangerous and therefor won't have their kids vaccinated. I have had a nuclear trained naval officer tell me that injections given directly into veins weaken the immune system ... and I wondered what he thought a skinned knee did with germs. People of all kinds have little ability to analyze or reason anymore.
You are also poorly informed – outbreaks are NOT associated with unvaccinated persons. "...protective immunity after vaccination wanes after 4-12 years." The Pediatric infectious Disease Journal. A newly published study in the journal, Clinical Infectious Diseases, found that the children most susceptible to recent whooping cough (pertussis) outbreaks have been those who had been vaccinated and were aged 8 through 12.
I agree you are too not informed. If you are were a parent, you would know docs have warned parents your child can still get whooping cough even with the vacinnation. We had two scares and my child was tested for whooping cough because there was someone who had a confirmed case and she expressed the symptoms. She was negative. The strands intensity the vacinnation is not complete resisting the whooping cough.
Why would you think a NUCLEAR trained naval officer would know about immunization? Is he trained in medicine at some point in his nuclear training?

You need to speak with a parent of a child who has develped severe cognitive impairments or has died as a result of reaction to the thimerosal (mercury containing) ingredient in vaccinations. Yes, I have had a family member, a young girl, 14 yo who DIED because of a vaccination. As naive as you are, I would never hope for such a devastating thing to happen to you.
I understand people are saying that even if kids are vaccinated that kids may not get whooping cough and in some ways true...in the 60's when I vaccinated whooping cough was low and almost non-existent. Nowadays, immigration and illegal immigration is on the rise and in Arizona we found more cases of chicken pox, whooping cough and measles...this is what was done in America a long time ago....people were checked for diseases – fatal and contagious. The rise of bed bugs has risen in the last 5 years because of immigrant travel which began in the hotels.

Thimerisol has not been used in children's vaccines since 2001. Its use had been declining for the preceding decade.
The pertussis vaccine is not 100% perfect – we rely on the concept of "herd immunity" to ensure that those who cannot be vaccinated due to age or medical condition still are protected, and that means we need to maximize the number of people wh ARE immunized. And an Internet campaign of misinformation has resulted in ever-dropping rates of vaccination, which in turn has resulted in the return of diseases many think have been eradicated, and a rise in mortality and morbidity from perfectly preventable diseases.

BlogMediator: Thimerosal has been removed from most vaccines and has NO side effects. It would NOT have killed a 14 year old child. If anything, the child may have been allergic or had another reaction, which is extremely rare. The risk of a child who catches Whooping cough and dies is much, much higher than any risk from the vaccine. It's ignorance like yours that spreads, causing people to forgo useful vaccines based on evidence found on a blog.
hical – just listen to these goofballs. They will try anything to avoid the simple fact that as people have reduced vaccinations for their kids, things like whooping cough outbreaks get more common. We went decades with almost no whooping cough deaths. It wasn't until the autism/vaccination nuts came out – and people believed them – resulting in vaccination decreases which of course brought whooping cough back.
Otherwise we would have always had these levels of whooping cough.
My daughter got pertussis at age 11 and she had all her vaccines–last booster was given at age 5. It was miserable–I think the Chinese call it the "100-day cough" and that's about how long it lasted for her.
I am deathly allergic to the vaccine and when I was very young I almost died from it, I was in a coma for 3 weeks. I refuse to let my child get this shot, he has had the first two but that is all he will ever get call me a bad mother if you so chose to but until you walk in my shoes you cant judge every parent who does not give their kids the recommend vaccines. Granted there are many parents out there that just dont really care or have a fear of over vaccinating their children.

Yes and this article fails to mention that most of the outbreaks are among the VACCINATED. I feel sorry for people who aren't fully informed of BOTH sides. Hierarchy- If you actually had read the paper you referenced you would know it shows children who are unvaccinated or under vaccinated are twice as likely to be attacked. The conclusion is we need to vaccinate more and work on an even better vaccine.

The DTaP vaccine isn't very effective. It's 60% effective in REDUCING symptoms. It does NOT prevent one from getting it or spreading it.
Stop blaming the unvaccinated. Vaccine rates in our country are at an all-time high, and yet pertussis cases are continuing to climb.
The overwhelming majority of pertussis cases are in fully vaccinated individuals.
Our country sacrificed effectiveness for safety in the 90s by switching from whole-cell to acellular version. CDC admits that.

There are other diseases forming that this country has not seen in decades, it's because illegals are able to waltz in here willy nilly. Who knows what they carry, TB and Menengitis are making a comeback. As people from the Middle East, South America, etc. come here...they bring these diseases. Our gov't does nothing about it, they worry only when a pandemic happens and thousands are killed before they will do something.

Please get your kids vaccinated. If your unvaccinated kid spreads it to my young child (you cannot get the vaccine for many months after birth) and then my kid dies because of it – I will hold you personally accountable. As if you put a gun to their head and killed them. And what do you think should happen to people who kill children?
Uh – there wouldn't be a problem if people were diligent about vaccination. Ranting about people from elsewhere with different skin color just makes you look small and insignificant.
It is so sad that babies have to loose their life over irresponsible parents that think vaccines cause autism, so they don't get them vaccinated, and essentially, play russian roulette with their lives. I'm sure when it happens, they suffer with guilt and regret every day, and they should. Pertussis was extremely rare, and now thanks to all the granola parents out there, it is spreading like wild fire. Insurance companies are lobbying for a regulation that will allow them to deny claims when parents choose to refuse vaccinations for their child, so if/when they come down with pertussis, rotavirus,meningitis, etc., the parent has to pay the bill. When they are slapped with a 100K hospital bill, maybe others will think twice about denying protection to their baby/child. Insurance companies should have not pay for someones stupidity, especially when wellness checks and vaccines are 100% covered.

We've spent $60 so far after our child had a reaction to his vaccine..then one to his antibiotic...should I send the bill to the vaccine manufacturer? Do some research before you throw around what "insurance companies" really care about
These vaccinations can be harmful. My son had a seizure after receiving his 15 month DPT shot. The doctor told me not to get any further DPT vaccinations for him or it could be fatal.

My daughter got pertussis at age 11 in the summer of 2010 and she had ALL her vaccines–we didn't miss a single one on the schedule. Her last booster shot was given at age 5.

I had whooping cough back in college. It was was terrible. I would cough and cough until there was no air left in my lungs but my diaphragm would continue to spasm until I passed out. I remember coughing until I was spitting out blood and vomiting.
Get the vaccination people! You don't want to experience this.
I got it too, when I was about 10–and I HAD been vaccinated. It sucks though I agree with you on that.
I had whooping cough in 8th grade. It was HORRID. I coughed until I vomitted. I dropped a bunch of weight and went to 3 doctors who were convinced it was "Just a cold" finally the 4th heard me cough and was like "whooping cough." and I was treated. No one should go through this let alone small children.
I'm sorry Looney, I mean Lainey, I don't see anywhere in the article where it states that all or most of the kids who come down with pertussis are not vaccinated. In fact, the opposite is true. What they won't tell you is that most of the children who contract pertussis have in fact been vaccinated for it. Disease rates for so-called "preventable" diseases are much higher among the vaccinated population than the un-vaccinated population, but you will NEVER see a true double-blind study proving that becasue they don't want you to know the truth – vaccines cause sickness, unhealthiness, disease, autism spectrum disorders and keeps the drug companies who make the vaccines rich.

Critical thinking? Critical thinking does not mean one can discount scientific evidence. The scientific method encourages critical thinking, and the scientific method has continued to strongly support the safety and effectiveness of vaccinations. You are completely wrong. And one other thing, some people do contract the disease after having been vaccinated, but those who do, have a much much milder case than someone who isn't vaccinated.

It is more likely that those who have Whooping cough are vaccinated because the vast majority of people already have had the vaccine. That does not mean those who have been vaccinated are more susceptible to getting whooping cough: quite the contrary. It means there is simply more of them vaccinated. I am sure if you did the science, a higher percentage of children not getting the vaccine and coming in contact with whooping cough are more likely to contract the disease.

What are you talking about? I am no fan of Obama, but let's get grounded into reality for a moment. Deportations are actually up since Obama has been in office. Also, people are leaving the US because the economy is rotten here. Mexico is actually in a better position economically than the US at this point. People are leaving because there are no jobs here. It is no longer worth the hassle to work in the US. Hell, I am even considering moving to Mexico and I'm a white guy.

Since we elected Obama the rate of people that cross the border and go directly into the welfare system collecting benefits and getting an EBT card has gone way up. Also the incidence of disease that needs expensive hospital treatment is going way up, too. Some of the imported versions of bugs we eradicated a long time ago are now drug resistant and cost a lot to deal with.

Do you research. Most of the victims are fully immunized. The vaccine is a failure. Blame the drug companies, not your neighbors who DID do their research.
angela, if it is such a failure, then why have the infection rates been going down since vaccinations have been popular? of course with the last couple of years in spikes excluded, which can be explained with the fact that immunity wanes and you need boosters periodically. they still mostly work for the majority of people who get them.
The issue isn't the vaccine is a failure but that we're dropping below the levels of protection for Herd Immunity, so that people who are susceptible are getting the disease. It's a triumph for dark age thinking.
A question. If it takes a series of shots for children to achieve full immunity (or as close to full immunity as we can get), does one booster shot do the trick in an adult? Or would we need to go through a series as well? I was asked today by a pregnant friend to get vaccinated in order to meet her baby next month, so I'd like to comply. there have been over 2000 cases of whooping cough in our county this year.
One TDAP shot is enough for an adult booster. But always ask these questions of your doctor, not the internet. 🙂
Booster implies that you've already received the full round of vaccinations previously. It's used to "refresh" the immune system's defense against the disease. If you've never been vaccinated you'll need the full set if vaccines (although the number of shots required may differ between adults and children).
I am an immunologist and physician in training. Please see your doctor about getting vaccinated and/or receiving boosters for vaccines you've received previously.

JoePub, you must not live in Southern California. I have an hour commute each way due to mainly illegals clogging the freeways, going 45 MPH in a 65 zone. They fight to get to the fast lanes to cruise and talk on their hand held phones. If you get into a car accident with them, they receive no penalty when they don't have auto insurance; it's too bad for you and your wallet. The law does nothing. I had a two hour wait at the DMV (even with an appt.) due to the Mexicans who receive driver's licenses even when they can't show proof of birth and the masses hankering for the benefits only California seems to afford. I'm the only soul with light hair in the whole place. Grocery stores have signs in Spanish for Mexicans to welcome them. All Mexicans in SoCal speak Spanish; they don't need to learn English and don't care to. Even the ingredients and directions on purchased goods are in Spanish now. You don't have the 100 cable stations in Spanish from DISH or Verizon Fios??? You haven't seen the ads on buses and now on television in Espanol? California is bankrupt because of illegals. You won't get it until it arrives in a town near you...........................................

I find it interesting that nobody in these pertussis articles or comment sections discuss the multiple other factors that could be contributing to the increase pertussis cases. Three of the main ones are: 1) B. Pertussis has a known cycle of infection over a multi-year period and we may be in the peak of that cycle. 2) Due to current vaccination schedules and recommendations new strains of pertussis have identified globally and are not being protected against in vaccinated populations (Just like the flu shot – it only protects for certain strains). 3) As a whole we as a people are already sick. We have compromised immune systems and constantly weaken our natural defenses with food that is bad for us and constantly poison ourselves with toxins in our environment.
We need to take one little step back and evaluate if there are other possible causes to these "epidemics" that are not being addressed and stop pointing fingers so rapidly.
I think you hit the nail on the head exactly. Its a non-scientific article on a scientific topic. Who's to say the author even knew what they were talking about or understood what they were writing. Its a scientific matter dumbed down for a non-scientific publishing.
The debate is simple.....Look at infection rates of polio, small pox, pertussis and other diseases throughout history; pre vaccine era vs. post vaccine era. You can't argue with the hard fact that prior to vaccines, people lived in fear of polio, small pox, pertussis and other diseases that used to kill or cripple people en masse. Ask your great grandparents about kids in their community coming down with polio and other diseases and how parents lived in fear of it. Ask them if they think vaccines are a good thing or not. While your at it, look at disease rates in impoverished countries that don't have access to vaccinations and compare that to the US. Hard to argue with statistical facts.

The problem is not that the vaccine doesn't work, its that the CDC didn't tell people they needed boosters for whooping cough after their teenage shots. Its a whole other problem entirely.
The polio vaccine was introduced in 1955. Prior to that the incident rate was 1 in 9,600 people. Scary. By 1979 Polio was erradicated in the US due to vaccinations. Stating that vaccinations are simply some vast govt. conspiracy to push profits for drug companies is idiotic.
Polio is making a comeback via illegal immigration. The new bug is stronger and might just be resistant to current treatments.

Spare me the hysteria over vaccines. Please just check the rate of occurrence of these vaccine preventable diseases with the frequency with which state regulations allow parents to avoid vaccination for their children and allow them to attend public school... I believe that WA, which has the largest number of unvaccinated kids in public school, also has the largest number of cases of pertussus.
I suggest that those parents who want to avoid all vaccination for themselves and their children also sign a release absolving their state of all responsibility for the health care costs of diseases they incur as a result.
We, as a nation have already assigned state and vaccine manufacturers with financial responsibiity for vaccine complications. That responsibility has become so onerous that development of new and safer vaccines has largely stopped within the USA.
Those who don't vaccinate their children will be excluded from a gene pool when their children die, Darwin at work! Stupidity will be eliminated.

My child had a severe allergic reaction to the multiple vaccines given at 6 months. Never had any issues with any vaccines before that. It was a complete surprise. Fortunately, he survived. Doctors advise no more vaccines, ever, since the vaccines were all "combos" – the doctors cannot be sure which one caused the reaction. Yes, allergic reactions and death from vaccines are rare, but when they happen, you have, yet another "preventable" death.
I'm so tired of the vaccination debate. And I'm so tired of people that claim vaccines do more harm than good. Our food supply is less natural and more chemical-laden than it was a few generations ago. Our air quality is abominable, our exposure to carcinogens is off the charts, gun violence is rampant and our planet is overheating, yet people worry about vaccines? Do parents realize these diseases are fatal? Do they realize the reason mothers don't routinely lose babies in our time is because these diseases were on the brink of extinction in the West? And why do you think that is? Because the previous generations vaccinated! I'm the "greenest" parent I know, but I'm not stupid. And it peeves me that I do my part for my kids (and society as a whole) and some don't do their's, so we all suffer. Foolish.
And don't forget the open border with Mexico and all the new diseases arriving every day. These once eradicated bugs are coming back in drug resistant forms. And we're getting a few brand new ones, too.

Hey, I empathize for what happened to your child, but, I'm sorry, that's a ridiculous question. If my kid is injured by a seatbelt, am I to propose we abolish seat belts? And if I were to make the choice not to buckle up, it wouldn't affect you and yours. Your choice not to vaccinate DOES affect the rest of us.
With an open border in the south and government sanctioned illegal immigration we're seeing a lot of once eradicated diseases coming back and some of these are now drug resistant, that is no realistic treatment available. This rise in disease is okay because we must remember to be nice.

I am sure that increased awareness has contributed to the apparent rise. I have studied whooping cough in my medical practice for 37 years, and for the last 15 years I have seen a lot, mainly in teenagers and adults. The vast majority have gone undiagnosed because doctors have believed adults do not get it. I also get emails from people who know they have whooping cough but cannot get their doctor to believe them. The number of emails of this sort has not changed in 10 years. To vaccinate or not........? This has been an internal debate for me since I had my son 18 months ago. When I hear of young babies dying of whopping cough it devastates me. The reason why there is an increase in tweens & teens isn't because they haven't been vaccinated. It's because the vaccine was changed in the the 1980's to a weaker dose. Instead of one vaccinne at infancy it now takes 3-4 and it doesn't protect them as long. This is an interesting link from Newsweek about this.
