Overheard: Contraceptives and Catholicism

Melinda Gates' response to the controversy surrounding her contraception program generated a flood of comments on CNN.com.

Many readers expressed support for Gates' work toward providing contraceptives to millions of women worldwide, especially in areas with high infant mortality and not a lot of contraception use.

"She is obviously a smart woman who understands how important it is for children to grow up in an environment where they are wanted and loved and receive enough parental attention. My hat is off to Melinda Gates," writes commenter PhyllisNorth. And ironman59 applauded the efforts of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for trying to "make it a better world for mankind."

Supporters of Gates' efforts included readers who identified themselves as Catholic, such as Ellerbee, who wrote, "The Church Fathers need to spend some time in the trenches, finding out what life is actually like for most of the world's population."

But there were also readers who do not believe in what Gates is doing. Reader commonesnes called her a hypocrite, writing, "Melinda refuses to admit that she not only is committing but also is promoting sin by others and in fact is encouraging it and glorifying it."

remmett70 criticized the contraception program on non-religious grounds, writing, "Dumping a load of rice in a village, doesn't help them provide for themselves. Giving contraception doesn't change the problem, it only masks it."

Threads of conversation turned against Catholicism, the Catholic church and the Vatican, making references to scandals involving priests and pedophilia.

But lgny points out that it's the Catholic bloggers who have openly criticized Gates, not the clergy. "Bloggers are hardly the official spokespeople for any group!"
