FDA approves drug to treat some obese, overweight adultsSome people who suffer from chronic weight issues may soon get some help from a pill. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Wednesday approved Belviq, or lorcaserin hydrochloride, to be combined with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise, for treatment of chronic weight problems. Specifically, the FDA says, it is approved for overweight or obese adults who have one or more medical conditions due to their weight, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol. In trials, 47% of patients without type 2 diabetes lost at least 5% of their body weight. By comparison, 23% of patients treated with placebo lost at least 5% of their weight. In people with type 2 diabetes, 38% of patients on Belviq lost at least 5% of their body weight compared to 16% on placebo, according to the FDA. "The results overall are quite modest," said Dr. Melina Jampolis, a physician nutrition specialist and CNN's diet and fitness expert. "But most experts agree that even a 5% weight loss has significant implications in terms of reducing the risk of obesity associated diseases including heart disease and diabetes." The FDA says the manufacturer of Belviq, Arena Pharmaceuticals, will be required to conduct six postmarketing studies, including a long term cardiovascular trial to assess the risk of heart attack and stroke. CNNMoney: Arena surges on weight loss drug approval The most common side effects of Belviq in non-diabetic patients include headache, dizziness and fatigue; and in diabetic patients low blood sugar and pain, according to the FDA. soundoff (790 Responses)« Previous 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Next »Leave a Reply to go to the website electric repair |

Pls ask yourselves-if weight loss is 'for our health', why is the 'ideal' body getting more and more impossibly thin? Why do most ppl, no matter how hard they try, unable to get or keep the weight off? And why are fat ppl, esp. white women, so viciously hated just for being fat? They put out all these so-called cures – that are ineffective and dangerous, that we would NEVER do to anyone else (and think of this – 'they' could be you or your loved one) to 'cure' an unacceptable body shape. I apologize for my earlier outburst, but the jist is the same-I feel so strongly about this: pls read 'The Obesity Myth' and decide for yourselves!
The ideal body is NOT getting thinner. What's happening is that people, women mostly are looking are models in advertisements and on TV. But those models job is to get you attention because they look different. The ideal body weight has always remained at about a BMI of 25 (give or take) and is NOT a moving target
please ask yourself why America is the only non third world country with such massive obesity? stop making excuses for laziness. we're a culture that wants to take the easy way out. years down the road we'll find out these lazy people now have other health related issues thanks to their dependency on drugs they take to try to control their weight. what a sad country we live in.
Fighting obesity is one of many ways the government is using to help lower our growing medical expenses.
Obesity, Smoking, Drinking, Drugs are factors that have increased medical premiums.
Quit making fu***** excuses for these people yes, there are some who just can't do anything but, the majority of people have just DECIDED to sit around and eat food that is not good for them. If the obesity rate was lower I might agree but 1/3 of this country are starting to look like jaba the hut.
Its not the ideal that is getting smaller, the average is getting larger. There was once a time when "curvy" was used to describe a woman with an hourglass figure (waist was noticeably smaller than hips). These days, curvy means pleasantly plump. People like dizzyd help further distort what is considered an average size by making excuses for the plus sized. Pills like this only make matters worse by leading people to believe that there is an easy fix for their bad habits.

@cja: You are right, BMI is not a moving target, but it is a range of values, a rather wide range, at that. For example, a "normal" BMI for a man 5'10" is anywhere from 18+ – 26! That translates roughly to 132 lbs. – 180 lbs! Wow, there's a huge, pardon the pun, difference between a 5'10" man that's 132 vs 180. At 132 he looks like a kid in high school that plays soccer. At 180 he got the beginnings of man breasts, fat covering his shoulder blades, and a not-to-be-hidden roll around his waste. Both of these men are considered "normal" and healthy with regard to body weight. Go figure. Btw, I'm 5'10", and I know exactly what 175 lbs looks like on me; it ain't pretty – or healthy.
@OP: The issue is not appearance, it's the plethora of chronic health issues that accompany being overweight or obese. It's easy to rant about how superficial personal appearance is and thereby excuse yourself for being fat, but that doesn't change the real health issues that come with the package, which, btw, society as a whole pays for through higher medical insurance premiums and ever-rising medicare / medicaid costs. I couldn't give a hoot what you look like, but I do care that my medical coverage is through the roof and to a measurable degree because a large percentage of the population can't stop shoving fat and sugar laden junk food down their throat while they spend the majority of their free time plopped down in front of the tube.
@ky Are you Fing kidding me? Man boobs @ 180lbs for a 5'10" male?? LMAO. You said you are 175 and it's not pretty, huh? You sound like a joke, if you can't easily carry 175 @ 5'10. My brother played TOP level college soccer @ 195-200 lbs. @ 5'10-5'11. He was the strongest one one the team and used to workout with the football team...@ 5-6% Bodyfat. I am 5'8 and currently weigh #235-240. I wear size 34 jeans. I Bench #330/ Dead close to #550/ Squat close to #500 RAW.....no juice, no suits. 18 inch arms, 28 inch legs 50 inch chest. Guess I'm fat as hell, huh?? Point is the BMI is a crock of s hi t. And fat people, almost always, can modify their diet and activity and lose that extra lard and get back in shape. With some exceptions, they CHOOSE not to. Stop eating your KFC and donuts, get in the gym, work hard as hell. Then you will be able to stop feeling sorry for yourselves when others are repulsed by your appearance.
You don't have to consult with the FDA to use the sidewalk. I am all out of sympathy for obese people.
Hey Cherries this is from a very fat obese woman,
TAKE THE SIDEWALK AND STICK IT I DONT WANT YOUR DAMN SYMPATHY......I see this new prejudism happening in this country.
Maria – this will come across as harsh. but that might be the only way. for one week write down all the food you eat, the caloric intake. and then write down how much exercise you do. then review that and tell yourself honestly who is to blame.
The problem with this reasoning is that you start from an assumption that all obese people got that way from being lazy or forgoing exercise. That is definitely not the case. There are many reasons for people being obese – my wife actually has a thyroid problem (yeah, I know, the old cliche) – but it's actually not that uncommon. She found out last year that her thyroid was SHUT DOWN. She has to take Synthroid to bring the hormones back up. Without those hormones, her body doesn't burn the calories efficiently, and therefore stores fat. In addition, she has wheat allergies, so she is undernourished. No matter how much she eats, her body thinks she's starving, so it stores body fat.
There are many other stories along these lines. Granted, some, if not most obese people are either eating poorly and/or lazy – but don't label everyone lazy because some are.
I Soooooooo agree! Its pathetic. The American way. Take a pill to absolve yourself from all of your ridiculous habits.
....and what % of people lost 5% with diet and exercise alone? study fail...
Those who were given the placebo did only exercise and changel their diet.
Really, you didn't even READ the article you're snidely remarking about, Andrew? Do you literally not know what "placebo" is?
I know what a placebo is. My point is that diet and exercise alone leads to weight loss. They failed to report those numbers. Perhaps same numbers as placebo? Perhaps not. What is the placebo effect?
If you knew what a placebo is (nothing) then you'd not have asked such a stupid question "what % of people lost 5% with diet and exercise alone?"
They didn't FAIL to report those numbers. They are reported RIGHT THERE. READ THE ARTICLE FOR ONCE.
placebo (plə-sē'bō):
A substance containing no medication and prescribed to reinforce a patient's expectation of getting well or used as a control in a clinical research trial to determine the effectiveness of a potential new drug.
In other words - NOTHING.
Andrew has a valid point. The placebo effect is quite real, and can cause people to believe they are getting better because they are taking a pill, and that belief alone can be enough to cause a change. In pain-killing-pill studies, the placebo group often reports not feeling any pain after having taken a sugar pill (I hope they didn't use sugar pills in this study). Because of the placebo effect, the placebo group is not an accurate control group, because they think they are getting real help. A proper control group should have been given no pills, but put on the same diet and exercise program as the rest of the study.
Peter, you're apparently 100% unfamiliar with the definition of "control group". Please retake elementary school through highschool again.
Little pills are not the answer to everything. Perhaps eating less and exercising would be a nice solution.
I agree. Eat the healthy meals, drinking water rather than soda and walking daily will make a big difference.
I have a new anti-obesity drug, called "Placebo". However, this drug has some unfortunate side effects, so in order for it to work you must not consume more than 1500-1800 calories per day, walk for 20 minutes each day, and eat 4 servings of veggies (corn does NOT count), 3 servings of fruit, and eat lean protiens... again, keeping in the 1500-1800 calorie restriction.
Placebo can work wonders for YOU!
How about 1) we stop subsidizing the agricultural engine that produces starchy and fatty foods? Raise the price of corn syrup instead of subsidizing the unhealthy. Eat grass fed, not corn fed beef. The real problem is we want "cheap" food to feed the masses instead of quality foods at affordable prices. I'd rather subsidize grass fed beef and let soft drinks cost $5.00 each. Subsidize US grown fruits and vegetables. People would naturally eat healthier if healthy foods were reduced in "price" by subsidizing the "costs".
Steve Lyons I hear ya!
steve – yup. that's the classic argument. as if looking at fatty food makes people fat. you have to eat the d@mn food and eat too much without exercising to get obese. but it's a mindset that most people are too stubborn or lazy to see.
Yeah chris – that's TOTALLY the effect that Steve was talking about. *face palm*
Most obese people are lower class – guess what food they can afford? Probably the ones that are subsidized.
No corn? WTH? Corn is great fiber and low cals.
You want to decrease or obliterate your obesity? STOP EATING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT! STOP BEING SO STUPID!
Says the stupidest person commenting here. Did you not read it? Do you not understand what the drug aims to do? Get an education, please.
will – this drug aims to try to trick people into eating less. those people who ate themselves into other health related problems via obesity. the sad thing is if found to be bad for the body down the road this will be worse than vioxx. we have much worse of an obesity problem than anything else in this country.
It's not a TRICK, it's an AID. Seriously, get an education, chris. Your stupidity is showing. The body is trying to trick a person into thinking they need to eat more any time you lose more than a couple dozen pounds. This is removing that trick. It makes it less painful, and more likely to succeed. You know the reason diets don't succeed? Because the pain causes people to go off them. This fixes that.
And chris, without even knowing what the chemical is, your magical mind can conclude it will have worse side effects than vioxx? Really?! Are you that full of yourself? Are you that ignorant of the fact that the FDA is requiring the longer term study to track any vascular problems it might cause (but honestly would be expected to be fewer than other diet pills, because this pill isn't messing with metabolism, only fullness feeling)? You must be. Your ignorance is evident in all your posts so far.
That's right Will, there is a pill for every ill and an ill for every pill. The pharma industry loves people who "think' like you.
CS, wow, you're stupid. This isn't exactly a "pill for every ill" now is it? But could it help? The science is conclusive. It does. Oh, but you don't believe in science, because that would benefit someone who makes pills. What a moron.
The only one that sounds stupid is you will!
While this may help some people who sincerely need help and have tried with proper diet and weight loss, this will quickly become the most over prescribed drug for people who are too lazy to exercise and mind what they put in their mouths.
You people blaming the obese are idiots. Do you think Americans just got lazy in the last 50 years? Our productivity is far greater than it ever has. Fat people are not lazy. We live in a modern world and need modern solutions.
I personally lost 50 lbs with Desoxyn, diet and exercise. Desoxyn is prescription methamphetamine.
The next generation will have none of these problems as Adipotide IS the Cure!
I disagree. I strongly disagree! Fat is brought on by eating too much or more than your body needs. Let me hear from those of you that eat only one meal a day and tell me how fat you are. Unless, of course, that one meal is an all day event. Munch, munch. Snack, snack. Eat, eat. Snack, eat, munch all day long will make your body ugly with fat dimples, double or triple chin, huge belly, fat ass, breast hanging to the floor, ugly, ugly, gooey, mess.
Then you'll look in the mirror and ask: Who is this? And the answer is it's your overfed, fat and ugly self.
Rags, his point was simple we could all benefit from a "pill" that helps the stomach signal the brain that it is "full", net result eating less and attaining a lower weight. I sure could benefit from this.
Our productivity isn't greater than 50 years ago.
People walked back then.
Most of us are rarely on our feet. We walk to the car and walk from the car into a building and that's about it.
We sit in front of computers, our tvs or on the couch.
Actually, eating just one meal a day will send your body into starvation mode, lowering your metabolism and increasing fat stores. Science shows us that eating several small meals each day (5-6) of about 250 – 400 calories each based on individual needs is the best way to improve metabolism, reduce insulin resistance, and help people get and stay healthy. I'm actually shocked at some of the comments I'm reading here. Obesity isn't typically about being lazy. Many people need to address what triggers their desire to eat other than simply hunger. Emotional factors have to be addressed as well. Education is another missing element. Also, doctors need to get more involved. There are TLC (Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes) programs that very effectively address symptoms of obesity such as high cholesterol, high triglycerides, insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease. When doctors stop writing prescriptions for pills as their first line of treatment and start addressing the lifestyle changes that need to occur, we'll see a drop in obesity. There's not a pill on the planet that's going to help unless lifestyle changes are also incorporated. Unfortunately, the medical community is incredibly slow to change, and there are a lot of ignorant, cold-hearted people out their who can't say anything other than "stop eating" or "exercise". If it was that simple, we wouldn't be facing a diabetes and obesity epidemic.
it's truly sickening to hear people applaud drugs as a replacement for common sense. why is it citizens in Europe don't have near the obesity problem as here in the states? how are they able to control their weight and we can't. you can't tell me it's genetic. plain and simple it's over eating combined with lack of exercise. for most Americans there is no other excuse. keep trying to blame something or someone else. it's the American way but until you face up to your faults no pill will help you.
chris, if you're stupid enough to think this pill is supposed to "replace" common sense, you have NO common sense of your own. Seriously get an education, won't you? This pill is supposed to HELP your common sense by giving it a fighting chance against the instinctual craving for high calorie foods while in a weight losing state.
By the way, I love your name, I hope that drug works out, Adipotide that is. As for this new drug here, it's efficacy is pathetic, considering that long term physical dependence may be a real problem.
Adam, Pharm.D., Ph.D.
I've lost 20 lbs by following the "grazing" diet where I space out my calories all day. I don't have a huge drop in blood sugar, so I eat less without even really thinking about it. That blood sugar drop is how people end up overeating all the time.
I just want to say to rags that most obese people have deeper issues. They have health problems, mental issues and/or physical drawbacks that don't allow them to loose the pounds as easy as others. I myself work as a soldier and have a very difficult time with pounds. I do not eat eat eat munch munch munch. I am physically active every day and have 3 children. maybe if society stopped judging and expecting people to wear size 0 all the time there would be a decrease in large people just due to an increase in acceptance.
Also, if you're younger than 50 then shut the f up. If you're in your twenties and espousing the benefits of exercise, you should be shot in the head. Just wait until your metabolism is cut in half.
My 65 year old mom walks 2 miles a day and lifts weights 3 times a week. She was really fat in her 50s (type 2 diabetes, had both knees replaced, was literally handicapped for a while) and turned her life around with a healthy diet and exercise. Stop making excuses for fat people.
in your argument all people over 50 must be obese. wrong. eat right and exercise and i guarantee you won't be obese after 50. time to stop searching for excuses and wake up to the real problem
That stuff is too close to amphetamine for my comfort level, I'll you that much...
Adipotide, anger plus obesity is a sure-fire way to give yourself a stroke. You can work on at least one of those.
There's nothing wrong with amphetamines. They should just sell all drugs at the local pharmacy.
I'm not fat Matt. I lost my weight 10 years ago. I am annoyed at all the people belittling the obese though.
Well you're definitely angry. Talking about shooting people in the head leaves you with no sympathy points.
I certainly don't need your sympathy. If you look at the comments others have made about obese people, you can see why I get aggravated. People are cruel to those that struggle. They can f themselves for all I care and I have the gun they can use to shoot themselves in the head.
Angry and violent. What a combination. What right do you have to talk about people being cruel? You're one of them. Although you're so caught up in the emotions of your pet issue that you don't see it.
Anyone who thinks diet and exercise are the answer needs to understand that it is much more complicated than just calories in – calories out. It is not just what you eat, but when you eat, how often you eat, how your individual body processes food, when you exercise, the type of exercise you do as well as a myriad of other factors such as age, gender, race, height, body type, the weather, sleep habits, how much salt your lose when you sweat...etc. There is no one size fits all for everyone. I am sure that as the obesity problem continues and becomes more of a drain on our economy more studies will be done to determine what will work best for individuals. I urge people to try to figure out what works for them and not fall for the latest fad diet/equipment/pill.
Very true. Adipotide IS the miracle pill when it comes to market. It actually destroys fat cells by reducing the size of the capillaries that feed them. The scientists that created it will win a Nobel prize.
Sure, everyone's body is different but if one doesn't put food into one's mouth (constantly, mindlessly), one is not going to gain weight.
Adipotide,
Did you even read my post? Just because that pill worked for you does not mean it will work for everyone. Ask Jim Fixx how well jogging every day helped him stay healthy.
My aunt was obese after her 3rd child was born 20 years ago. She got sick of the weight and decided to start walking on a treadmill. Initially, she couldn't walk for more than a few minutes but gradually increased her time. She started eating healthy (a lot of huge salads). Within a couple of years, she was running 6 miles on the treadmill every day. She lost the weight. She became fit, confident and happy. Now, she's 50 and looks like a 35-year old. She runs, swims, eats well and has a beautiful life.
Jim Fixx had major heart disease because of the diet he had before he took up running. He used to overeat and smoke.
It's called counterpunching idiot.
Anybody who uses a suicide joke to counterpunch a fat joke is either a sociopath or too dense to realize that suicide is a touchy issue. Jerk.
You just want to fight. Go play your Xbox.
So, sociopath it is, I see. You want everyone to believe your little sob story, but as soon as you start acting like a first class jerk, you're STILL somehow the victim.
Just out of curiosity, you were fat as a kid, weren't you? You can always tell someone who was fat as a kid, because no matter how much weight they lose, that fat kid is still inside, crying away.
I also have a wonder drug. It's called diet and exercise. For only $49.99 you too can have this miraculous new drug. Side effects include weight loss, more energy, feeling better about yourself, looking better, living longer, and being attractive to other people.
Anti-obesity? It's not really that complicated. Eat less; eat better; move.
Slow and steady wins the race, but one has to think, plan and make the change.
Fortunately, we live in a time when calories are printed on most labels. Unfortunately, we live in a time when people don't move and have access to food that contains insane amounts of fat and calories.
Write out (truthfully) what you eat today. Decide what you are going to replace that with (cutting calories, fat).
Not difficult. Except everyone acts like it is somehow impossible.
it's impossible because they are unwilling to wake up to the real problem. i've watched people undergo gastric bypass only to gain all the weight back on. it's that old notion of i can eat this now, tomorrow i'll exercise. until people learn to get off the sofa and out from behind the computer, put down the junk food and stop being lazy America will continue to have high obesity. wonder pill or not.
Losing weight with drugs? This is bound to have major side effects....eventually leading to people who will be forced to take more drugs to counter such effects. FDA Approved.
If you haven't been obese for over 5 years then you have NO idea what you're talking about. Fat cells are created, never destroyed and send out massive hormonal signals telling you you're always hungry.
That's what happens when you constantly eat crap. I know. I'm flippin' huge. HFCS...mmm, mmm!
Sorry JEM, you are not correct. I have known a lot of very thin people who eat junk food and don't exercise. I am not advocating eating junk/processed food. My point is that each person needs to understand what works for them.
MOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!..................MORE SUGAR FOR EVERYONE!
More diversion and less real news. How about an update on the Economy.
You realize that drug approvals have a very real impact on the economy, don't you?
Then visit an economics blog. This one's for 'health'. And remember......scarf down that HFCS, boyo!
The cost of healthcare is a HUGE drain on our economy and much of it is do to obesity.
I'm sorry, Larry, there's only room on the internet for economy news. Well, that and about 3 billion p0rn sites.
P0rn good. HFCS better.
The corn council would like to remind you that's there's no difference between HFCS and cane sugar. Both will give you diabetes just fine.
Years ago I was overweight because of my eating and lack of exercise. I changed that myself no drugs. Just eat right and exercise it's as simple as that. Everyone makes stupid excuses. It's your own damn fault your overweight. Get off your asses. I'm tired of high insurance because lazy fat asses eat like crap and blame everyone else. No disabled parking for obese people also. Wake up America.
Matt has nothing valid to say here. Seriously the guy is only here to cause problems. I think his wife is not giving him any attention. You can tell when a guy gets no sexual attention because they just want to fight with everyone about anything.
Fight on Matt. One day maybe someone will find you attractive, until then good luck on those p0rn sites.
I'm only fighting with you because you're a gigantic hypocrite who thinks fat jokes are cruel but suicide is funny. And I AM being serious about this. Your failure to realize this tells me that you're so tightly wrapped up in your own life that you can't see that you've become all that you profess to hate.
Also, you're way off on me, but I can see that I was right about you.
Adipotide – how did yoou get itmm
I tell you what Matt, when I go to a suicide board and make fun of that, then you can use that comparison. Until then, it simply isn't relevant. Try using relevant facts in your attempt to make yourself feel superior.
You think suicide jokes are appropriate because this isn't a suicide board?? By that logic, fat jokes are appropriate everywhere but articles about obesity.
Adipotide is in clinical human trials now. They have already done the animal research and the amount of weight monkeys and mice dropped without side effects was astronomical.
You may be able to get it synthesized because the formula is public but it will be very expensive and risky. You can follow the clinical trials by looking at Arrowhead Research's website. They own the patent.
That's fine Matt. I have no problem with fat jokes personally. I don't like people suggesting on a comment board though that fat people are lazy and stupid. They aren't joking.
Do you understand the difference between a joke and a serious assertion?
I do understand the difference between a joke and a serious assertion. Quite readily, in fact. Given the utter lack of humor in your "go shoot yourself in the head" comment, I'm assuming it must have been a serious assertion.
That was neither a joke nor a serious assertion. It was an expression of the indifference I have for their "opinions" that are misinformed and mostly intended to hurt people's feelings.
Perhaps you should work on your comprehension skills before jumping into a conversation that requires actual intelligence.
You're the one who's not understanding here. You've never had a family member commit suicide, have you? You think it's some expression of "indifference"??? You're a basically sociopathic, violent, angry, and illogical. You think just because you got fat as a kid, you can heap your own form of hate on anyone who has a different opinion than you on the matter.
Also, were you this angry before you started using methamphetamine? I'll admit it take a certain amount of courage to admit that you're a meth user, but it has shown to fundamental alter personality.
Matt, Matt, Matt...your desperation is showing. You've lost Matt. Hang up your kid gloves. They hurt no one.
Now you're just making me laugh. You entertain me Matt. I have a big smile on my face now. Thanks.
Your ad hominem is a desperate ploy. I'm being serious about the meth. There are serious consequences to hitting the 5-HT2a receptor. Turns out it fundamentally changes how the brain works. Making more personal attacks on me won't change that fact.
Matt, you do realize there is a difference between using the minimum effective dosage and overdosing right? Go hit the Xbox friend. You lost.
Do you people read or just like to tell fat people they are lazy? this drug is only for people who have a pre-existing condition. They may be fat not just because they eat dummies. Have you ever heard of hypothyroidism? Some people are fat and it's heriditary. I know fat people that run marathons and teach aerobics classes.
........and I know fat people who are ready to stroke out at a moment's notice – including me.
65% of the population don't have pre-existing conditions. We've become a nation of fatties. Go to any other country in the world and Americans stand out because they tend to be fat. The poor in other countries are emaciated, ours are obese. The food industry has a symbiotic relationship with the health care industry. One gets rich making us fat, and the other makes a fortune treating the symptoms and diseases.
I have hypothyroidsm and I am not fat. It is all about quality of food and exercise. Eat less and move more – is said over and over and over.
Obese people are not disabled. They do struggle with weight and will ALWAYS struggle with hunger. I was very thin as a child and relied on my high metabolism. That slowed in my late twenties and I was obese throughout my thirties. I lost it all in my forties thanks to diet, exercise and desoxyn. I still have FAR more problems with hunger than I did before I got fat.
You do realize this is the internet and without photos, hardly anyone cares...right?
"On 15 September 2010 it was reported by national news-media that lorcaserin was associated with the development of cancer in laboratory rats."
From Wikipedia
More people who will be dependent on drugs instead of making lifestyle changes. Pathetic.
Agreed. Look for the class action law suit when the new wonder drug causes liver damage....
Wow... don't you guys read the articles? "to be combined with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise,"... the pill alone isn't enough. I rather doubt this pill is going to keep someone who wants to lose weight from exercising or dieting.
High-fructose Corn Sweeteners – – Go look it up – –
That is what is causing the "epidemic", and you ALL are eating it
LOGIC FAIL... because it that really were the case, and we are ALL eating it, then we'd ALL be fat. Obviously, we aren't ALL fat, so there has to be something else (maybe in conjunction with HFS) that's causing the epidemic.
What I don't get is that when these people eat, they are full, they just ignore the feeling because they want the food. How is this pill going to make it any different? How many times do you hear people say they are stuffed, yet still eat more? When you are really fat, 5% isn't going to make a huge (pardon the pun) difference. We need more long term solutions. No wonder doctors don't like working with fat people. They don't listen to advice and want an easy solution to continue their poor lifestyle.
It's not that. When you are obese and even afterwards the hunger pains are far greater than they were previous to your weight gain. The fat cells themselves send out hormonal signals that are FAR more intense than just satiety.
You are totally right!!!
you are right margeaux not the others making excuses.
I don't make excuses. I do what works. I am thin. I was fat. I fixed it. Medicine is a tool and can help...A LOT. If you don't understand this then you need to work on your IQ and not your posting skills.
It will ALWAYS be harder for previously fat people to stay thin.
i too was fat and I lost the weight changing my diet and exercise. I do not need drugs to change myself. Just because you are so worried about my IQ makes you very weak and it shows because you needed drugs. Willpower works if you have it.
Good job Buck. You do indeed have good will power. You should try adipotide when it comes to market though because it will make it easier for you.
My post did not go so my apologies if it turns up after this.
Thank you Buck. We know the truth.
Antipotide, We all get hungry. Do you not think thin people get hungry? I was starving the other day when I had to miss lunch. However, when I do eat, I eat lots of fruit, veggies and beans. I am a vegetarian. It is all about choices. I also exercise and as you put it my metabolism has been cut in half...
How is it you can make this statement? Are you fat? Have you been fat? If no to both – then how do you KNOW that they get signals and they just ignore them?
That's not the case at all. True, there is a point where your stomach simply can't take anymore food – but that's not what we're discussing here. There are many things that happen in the body of an obese person that don't happen in the body of a thin one. Cravings, issues with your body storing fat, etc.
If you combine diabetes with that (most obese people either have diabetes or are borderline diabetic), then you've got other issues. Some diabetics crave sugar – even after they've just had it. That's empty calories. Also, they are constantly thirsty – so they may drink more caloric beverages than most.
Bottom line – THEIR bodies don't give them the same signals that YOUR body gives you – so you can't judge them based on what YOUR body does.
Buck – again, it looks like folks are missing the point of this drug. It doesn't make you lose weight by itself – you have to combine it with exercise and health diet – the way you lost weight. So, if while you were losing weight, somebody came along and said "keep doing what you're doing, but take this pill too and you'll lose an additional 5% body weight" – wouldn't you have taken it (assuming you could be assured it's safe?). That's all they are doing here – it's not a "Skinny Pill"... it's just a supplement to your weight loss.
wealthcoach no I wouldn't take it even if it was safe. I don't like taking any medicine unless it is the only solution. For some maybe it is. But you and I know everyone just wants an easy way out. It's not easy you just need to do it for yourself. It's like all those fad diets or getting your stomach stapled. Until the individual does it the right way and sticks to it we will never fix the problem.
Wealthcoach, and you know how I feel because....
Show me a person, who eats the proper calories for their body, exercises on a regular basis and does not have a medical issue (although I have a low thyroid and manage fine..)who is overweight. Don't go by what people say they eat. The research proves that people constantly underestimate what they eat. Fat people console themselves by blaming everything/everyone around them but themselves. They say they try, but do it for 1 week and when they don't see results they blame their body.
there is not anti obesity drug!!! stop being lazy and eating like a fatty. Exercise every day. Get over yourself and stop blaming everthing except your own actions.
My penis is finally free.
Now you can get your hands on it.
Can't obese people just eat less and exercise more?
Yes. Eating less causes more mental anguish for them than thin people though.
Apparently, that is asking too much.
If you are younger than 50 or have never been obese, you have no idea what you're talking about.
Most of our country is obese and our production has never been greater. Clearly obese people are just lazy...lmfao.
It is not natural to take pills to lose weight. It is traditional for virgins to wear white dresses on their wedding day. All brides in white dresses need to be forced to take a truth test and have pig's blood thrown on them if they mock this tradition by lying. Fat people are disgusting.
Do me a favor and get off the Internet. Linus Torvalds was quite overweight when he created Linux which runs most of the web servers on the Internet. In fact, you can stop using most modern conveniences since there were countless that were created by those disgusting, useless fat people–moron.
not sure if serious...
I am amazed at the ignorance written about why people are obesity. People educate yourself before speaking please. Having had a weight problem all my life I can tell you that I probably eat less than most of you commenting here. There are many more factors to obesity than overeating people, so get a clue.
its not just about how much you eat, its what you eat. and how often you exercise. I guarentee youre doing something wrong.
It's more than just that, it is also when and how often you eat. You could be one of those folks that starve themselves all day and then eat a heavy late meal. You screw up you metabolism by doing that.
I'm amazed at the fat people that are ignorant to why they are fat. Park in the furthest spot from the store. Fill the cart with fruit and vegetables (ma nature's desserts) not Twinkies. Eat 2000 calories a day or less. Most people sit at a desk and burn nothing throughout the day. Walk into any grocery store and you'll see why America is fat. The first display at our Cub Foods is an island of donuts, the next an island of Gatorade, the next an island of soda. I run by the local McDonalds every night at around 10pm and there is a line at the drive thru. Pretty sure everyone in their cars wonders why they are fat or simply don't care. Only you can do something about it. Not a pill. Walk to the store next time. Ride a bike. Shut off the TV and go do yard work. If you don't have a yard do someone else's. You will lose weight. And if you don't care – good for you – enjoy your life but don't blame it on not overeating. Blame it on being happy with who you are.
YET ANOTHER PILL!?
How come other countries don't need this!?
They know how to get off the couch and exercise.
I am starting a new weight-loss program. This program works if you want to lose five pounds, or a hundred and fifty pounds, and is 95% effective. It is free to anyone willing to make the commitment.
What do I call this marvelous new program?
PUTTHEFORKDOWN
They should make a pill that tells the brain to get their fat @sses off the couch and quit buying Doritos. Just walk around a grocery store in the U.S. and look in peoples carts. That is why they are fat. And for those saying they are amazed at the ignorance written about obesity- please. I am amazed at all the fat people that are ignorant to why they are really fat. Try consuming less calories – you will lose weight. It's called self control.
I've lost 20 lbs by following the "grazing" diet where I space out my calories all day. I don't have a huge drop in blood sugar, so I eat less without even really thinking about it. That blood sugar drop is how people end up overeating all the time.
You're supposed to combine this drug with sensible eating habits and exercise...that's the way it is with all of these "anti-obesity" drugs and gimmicky equipment. Folks, it all boils down to eating right and exercising. I know some people are on medication that promotes slow metabolisms and others have hormonal/glandular disorders that give them weight issues, but for the vast majority of people, stop up-sizing and get moving!
Either CNN made a mistake published the results wrong, or the test was a fail. Because the results appear inconclusive to me. Why did the FDA approve this? Is this another "fen-phen" fiasco waiting to happen?
This is awful.
I'm all about making a buck, but really?? We are going to give Americans every chance to become obese and now we are going to offer a drug to help them in the end? I guess it's no different with people who smoke and alcoholics. It's unfortunate we can't try to stop the behavior early on with a healthier diet and exercise. Let's continue to let people just ruin their bodies and then give a glimmer of hope at their worst, all the while continuing to make a profit. Well, let's all go check our BMI and sign up for this miracle pill.
Fat? Take a pill. Sad? Take a pill. Can't sit still? Take a pill. Can't get moving? Take a pill. Can't fall sleep? Take a pill. Can't stay awake? Take a pill. Nervous? Take a pill. Can't pay attention? Take a pill. Wife doesn't do it for you anymore? Take a pill. Move your bowels too much? Take a pill. Move your bowels too little? Take a pill....
