 Gonorrhea bacteria causes a sexually-transmitted infection in about 106 million people worldwide each year.

WHO: Sexually-transmitted superbug could be major crisisA major public health crisis is emerging, in the form of a sexually-transmitted disease that doesn't respond to antibiotics, World Health Organization officials said Wednesday. Gonorrhea is one of the most common sexually-transmitted infections. It is spread through oral, vaginal and anal sex. About 106 million people worldwide become infected every year. "Once this organism develops full resistance to this last antibiotic that we have, we have nothing else to offer to these patients," says Dr. Manjula Lusti-Narasimhan, scientist at the Department of Reproductive Health and Research at WHO. The organization has just released a global action plan encouraging greater awareness and advocacy, research, increased prevention efforts and monitoring of gonorrhea treatment failure. The same sorts of prevention messages apply for gonorrhea as for HIV/AIDS: Practice safe sex - correct and consistent use of condoms - and limit the number of sexual partners. Australia, France, Japan, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom are among the countries reporting cases of gonorrhea that does not respond to cephalosporin antibiotics, which is the last treatment option against gonorrhea. These are developed countries with good health care systems, meaning countries less well off may be even more at risk for a crisis. "If the resistence is there, what we think is that we’re sitting at a tip of an iceberg," Lusti-Narasimhan said. "For places in many other parts of the world where there are much less both human and financial resources, it’s very difficult to know the extent of the data." The consequences of an untreated infection are harsh. In both men and women, it can cause infertility. Up to half of babies born from mothers with gonorrhea have severe eye infections, which could lead to blindness. Women who are pregnant may have spontaneous abortions or ectopic pregnancies. If the bacteria gets to other parts of the body, joint pain, swelling and stiffness are possible. The WHO does not know the extent of the spread of drug-resistant gonorrhea yet. The infections don't seem to be as resistant in the United States as in some of the other countries, but there is increased susceptibility, Lusti-Narasimhan said. More surveillance is needed globally to fully assess how widespread these resistant infections are. Bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics as a result of overuse or improper use of antimicrobial agents as well as poor-quality versions of these drugs. Strains of gonorrhea in particular appear to have a particularly good ability to become resistant.

Jesus said that in the end times disease would increase (the Bible uses the word "pestilence") and that the love of many would grow cold. These are the two things that happen in an immoral society. We were giving the miracle cure of penicillin just a few decades ago so that two or three generations out of the entire history of the world was spared from the terrible suffering brought about by infectous disease, but what did we do with it? We squandered it with gross immorality. Also, immoral people are selfish people. Their hearts grow cold to others and often their spouses who have loved them, because they want someone who is better looking. Moral people who have learned to say no to their lusts so that they can live responsible lives and put others first (i.e., love others) are not like that. It's a stark contrast. But the bottom line is, Jesus knew this was coming because His Father showed it to Him. And believe me, it's going to get a lot worse. We haven't begun to know the suffering that we've invited in by our immorality. It will be so bad that Jesus predicted, "that unless those days were cut off, no flesh would be preserved." In other words, unless God intervenes, man would destroy himself and push himself to extinction because of his own irresponsibility and immorality.
Teaching abstinance and it actually happening are two totally different things.
And we are animals by nature, we have urges. There are times when stuff happens. Abstinence is the best way, but it isn't really feasible for everybody to do.

Conrad–yes it will continue to mutate but by natural selection -the susceptible offspring will die (due to medications) buy any resistant offspring will continue to live. To conquer the resistant offspring we will need to develop another way of killing of them-such as drug that attacks a different critical process or structure of the bacteria...this could eventually becomes resistant and the cycle continues like that...

This is a lie because STD's can also be contracted via blood exchange. If you go to the dentist, doctor, or even have surgery, and instruments are not cleaned correctly – you could contract this or worse HIV. Don't say that marriage or abstaining is the "end all" because it is not. That is a flat-out lie.

You need to re-read your bible. God's laws do not prohibit sex outside of marriage, only a married woman having sex with anyone other than their husband. Check Proverbs 6:26. You evidently listen to too many people that twist the meaning of god's word to fit their own agenda.

Where in the Bible does it say that I am not allowed to talk to people who don't believe in God? I am not sure where you get your information from. I have never been mocked or laughed at for trying to upohold my morals, and part of that is because I don't belittle those who have different morals than I. Part of being a Christian is following Christ's example, and he was accepting of everyone. He didn't brush someone off simply because they didn't believe in God. He helped everyone and was accepting of everyone. Once again, no one deserves a disease and Christians are definitely not immune.

As for everyone who have been offended, I completely APOLOGOIZE for the offense we, Christians, have created by being loveless. As you can see, no one in the world is perfect. this STD problem is not new it's just become public. The U. S. military has an island called Johnson Island in the middle of the Pacific that had hundreds of incurable airmen soldiers and sailors. The place was horrible and planes only landed there in case of flight emergencies.

The author's logic is faulty. Countries with superior health care are at a greater risk for antibiotic resistant bacteria. Easy access to antibiotics leads to more antibiotic doses and an increased frequency of resistance. The development of superbugs in developed countries is quite predictable.

Is it any wonder why the world is in the shape it's in today with this thing. Sex smeared here, Sex smeared there. One thing I blame also is pushing kids who are so young to be starting in school. Trying to make grown-ups out of them before their time. They have no real childhood anymore. Heck, at 12 or 13 yrs. old I was still playing with dolls, not boys. Having sex on the first date, when maybe you don't know anything about the person. Now the thing with the antibiotics not working. I read almost 20 yrs. ago already the reason our antibiotics aren't working anymore is because of all the antibiotics they give to the farm animals. It's just a combination of everything here. People must learn to have some self control over their bodies. Use protection at least for the sake of not getting pregnant. I always say people know what the consequences can be without protection, so why don't they do something about it before it happens. Maybe there would be less abortions taking place, and less sexually transmitted diseases going around.
I remember when my sis-in-law a Norwegian told me "It's perfectly normal here to be promiscuous until the age of 30. You fool around and then at 30 you get married and have children. it's Normal!! Everyone does it". Then I seen how the children who graduate school at 16 get this "party bus" and go around trying to screw as many people or drink as many beers etc in order to get a pin in their hat. After this they pass out graphic business cards to the local school children.. and it's all in fun.. Tee hee!. That's when I decided I would never live there. Morally decrepit society whether it's the nicest place on earth or not.
That same sis-in-law was also diagnosed with HPV last year. No surprise she was crying when she found out she could have cancer. Wonder if bragging about all that promiscuity was worth it.

We must teach our children self discipline and self control – not just with sex, but with credit card usage, with eating, with time on the internet, etc. We are a society of selfish people who don't know the meaning of self control anymore. Really? The very last treatment option is cephalosporins? Not even going to try carbapenems? No combination therapy? No experimental drugs? Obviously, drug-resistant bacteria whether its MRSA, VRE, or ?? what will we call this – CRNG?? is not good news, but I just can't see Infectious Disease clinicians throwing up their hands and saying there is **NOTHING** we can do for some infected with resistant gonorrhea.
Just checked out the CDC recommendations for confirmed CNRG – azithromycin or gentamicin (or combo), and I am sure there are other novel combos that can and will be made in the coming months and years until a new effective single agent antibiotic is identified.
I guess I will be safe from STDs. I'm so fat I can't even get into my own pants !
