10 surprising benefits of quitting smokingRick Morris is one of seven CNN viewers participating in the CNN Fit Nation Triathlon Challenge. He quit smoking on an episode of "Sanjay Gupta, M.D." and has been smoke-free since. About two months ago, I quit smoking. At the time there were many reasons influencing my decision to finally choose a smoke-free lifestyle. I was worried about my health. I had high blood pressure. My doctor and everyone I knew was encouraging me to kick the habit. My family history is one of lung cancer and diabetes. The list goes on and on. Now that I've been without tobacco for the past couple months (63 days, to be exact), I've noticed some changes in the way I'm living. All are positive and are in direct relation to my body's depletion of those nasty chemicals I've called friends for the last 12 years. So I thought I would list those changes and explain how I have been affected by each. Though my list is restricted to 10, it is by no means an exhaustive one. 1. No more chronic cough: All smokers know what "smoker's cough" is. I didn't realize how annoying this was until I stopped coughing all the time. After about a week being smoke-free, I noticed I didn't have to clear my throat every few minutes. I recall plenty of times when I was at a function or meeting and needed to cough so badly, but couldn't because I knew it would be rude and interrupting to those around me. It's like an insect hovering in your throat – not touching, just drying everything between your tongue and your stomach – and you can't do a darn thing about it. 2. The smell: I didn't know I smelled so badly until I was around other smokers. Their clothes, home, car, even their pets reek! About a week after I smoked my last cancer stick, my daughter and her boyfriend, a smoker, dropped by for a visit. Their dog always peels for the door and makes it into the house first. Yeah, I actually smelled the odor of cigarettes coming from the dog. 3. No more cleaning butts: I swear that cigarette butts would multiply when I wasn't looking. I once placed a butt can out back on the patio and initially used it as intended. Pretty soon, I was too lazy to walk down the steps to the can and just started flipping cigarette butts out into the yard, in the area of the butt can (as if I were shooting a jump shot). I rarely scored. Eventually, they were lying everywhere. So much that I would just wait until the weekends to "clean" them with the leaf blower. Nasty, nasty, nasty! 4. It's just an extra $200 per month: Really, the extra money wasn't even noticed, as I can easily spend that on a night grilling on the patio (I love king crab and filet mignon, and only the finest Belgium beer!) So I really didn't look at this as a true benefit of not smoking. But, with the price of cigarettes reaching about $6 a pack in my area – and up to $11 in other areas of the nation – I discovered this adds up. And, it was clear the price of tobacco was just going to continue to rise. So, I got out my calculator. $6 a day multiplied by 365 days in the year. Comes out to $2,190. Looking at this long term, that's about $122,000 over the next 56 years (when I turn 100). Assuming cigarettes continue to increase in price at the present rate, then it's easy to see that number growing to half-million dollars. Invested wisely, I'm sure I can leave someone a big, fat payday! 5. Lost productivity: Sure, we all need a break or two during the work day. But I realized I was taking about 20 of these 5-minute breaks. In all honesty, each was probably about 10 minutes. About two-thirds of my breaks were when I was at work (I have a home-based web development business). So, that's more than 2 hours of breaking as opposed to working. How in the world was I getting my work done? I have since realized that I wasn't. 6. Food tastes much better: I don't know if it has something to do with a cleaner mouth, but food simply tastes better. I also find that I use less salt. I've heard on several occasions that if one quits smoking one gains weight, but I would warn people from using the weight-gain excuse as a viable argument when attempting to become smoke-free. Trading one bad habit for another isn't the way to go. 7. Non-smoking or non-smoking?: I think the air-line industry coined the phrase: "Smoking, or non-smoking?" And, I think it was the first group to eliminate cigarette smoking from a certain area (the airplane). Today, it's almost preposterous to think we once smoked during an international flight on a 747! "Non-smoking or non-smoking?" seems to be the rhetorical, unasked question wherever you go these days. It's understood. There will be no smoking here, or here, or there, or over there, or in there, or... well, you get the point. Unlike the Golden era of the 1920s and 1930s, when smoking was an upper-class hobby, a smoker's world is an unfriendly one today.Since the airlines quit asking that redundant question, smoking has been eliminated from virtually all public places. Restaurants, high-school football games, town parks, even bars and drinking establishments have become smoke-free. For smokers, drinking a beer without a cigarette is like playing pool without a beer! Whether smokers realize it or not, the very fact that one uses tobacco limits them in myriad ways – especially socially. I don't have to worry about that anymore. 8. Dry, sticky contact lenses: As a wearer of these miracle discs of ocular health, I know what smoking does to your contact lenses. Smoke makes them dry. They become cloudy and you're constantly rubbing your eyes. Eventually, your lenses get to the point where you must get them out. Fortunately, I wear disposable contact lenses. All I had to do was pop in a new set. But, at a couple dollars per lens, this was costing me. How to solve this annoying problem? Quit smoking! 9. Physical appearance: In the few months I've not smoked, I can tell my overall physical appearance has improved. My skin isn't dry and wrinkly. My bit of gray hair is actually going brown. My self-confidence in speaking directly to someone isn't hindered by my desire to turn at an angle because of smoker's breath. 10. Bye, bye yellow teeth: No matter how hard I brushed or swished fluoride, I couldn't seem to keep perfectly white teeth. "It's because you smoke," my dentist proclaimed. "And, unless you do something about that, your dental health will continue to deteriorate, thus affecting your overall health." Bad teeth can lead to serious health effects throughout your body. Yesterday I had a cleaning at the dentist, and plan to keep my teeth white and healthy from now on. |

Great post here! I am deciding to quit smoking and I'm taking the first step. For now, I am just into e-cig because I have read a lot of reviews that e-cig smoking is way better than regular cigarettes. I hope that this will help me eventually to stop totally from smoking. Please visit this site for more related info. http://www.sbicouncil.org/e-cig-brands-and-reviews-for-2014
Another annoying ad from the e-cig people disguised (not well) as a sincere post.
Pretty funny that they take the most poisonous substance in tobacco, purify it to weapons grade and think they are doing something safe. And they fumes they emit into the air are not pure water vapor, as the e-cig people claim–they contain nicotine, formaldehyde and other poisonous things.
Definitely, smoking is not good for our health. But there are better ways to help yourself in the promise of qiutting smoking. E-cigs are a good alternative. http://www.globalchange.org/
This is a great post! Very informative and for sure, a lot of people like me, have learned a lot from this. Thanks. http://www.pnnonline.org/vapor-zone-coupon

It feels great to not need cigs anymore!!! But I do have a question. I have been hacking up all manner of yellow (almost like bile but not the same) and brown stuff (definitely tar from my lungs) almost on a daily basis since I quit. Is this normal? Btw, I smoked weed and cigs for 15 years before quitting weed 2 years ago, and quitting cigs 6 weeks ago. If anyone could let me know when this is going to stop, that'd be great.
Having quit several times in my life, hopefully for the last time recently, I can tell you this is common. Your lungs are just cleaning themselves of all the gunk you put in them. It will get better soon. Good luck and enjoy not smoking!
yes I believe it is, go to the doctors though especially if your scared, believe me being embarrassed about coughing phlegm in front of a doctor, is a funny thing, they don't care

After 25 years of a pack a day, I've been happily smoke free for one month now after listening to Allen Carr's "Easy Way" audiobook over a two week span. It really IS easy! Give it a listen!
I was addicted to rolled cigarettes, especially kretek cigarettes made in Indonesia that I bought online at http://www.balicigarettes.com
I really enjoyed it taste and I still can not move to the filtered ones. But most importantly, I always smoke alone without anyone else around me.

But why did I believe them? The fact that there daughter wasn’t there was a big clue (dude…yours is grisly one of the dumbest arguments I have ever heard…and there are a lot of really dumb arguments tossed around by cop blockers. As for for the runaway, she went to meet her boyfriend…he was there and faces charges too. Remarkable ( not really) you seem to have failed to answer about the property owners rights.

Very good article and you're right, it does take several tries before you can quit for good. I was able to quit exactly 2 years ago by using a mass hypnotist. Best thing I ever did, quit smoking and never looked back. I don't even miss it 98% of the time. I've even slipped once or twice but thank goodness, never got hooked again and never plan to. Haven't even slipped in a long time now. Hypnotist is the way to go. Save your information and they let you come back for a re-up for free if it's needed.
Gracias por compartir con todos nosotros toda esta practica información. Con estos granitos de arena hacemos màs grande la montaña Internet. Enhorabuena por este blog.

Jonah, you are seriously comparing the tone and content of the article above with Adam’s hideous racist rant?I actually (heaven knows why, because it was difficult to endure) watched the entire hour-long video of the “meeting” (really a kind of old-fashioned show trial) last night. All I can comment on is what I saw, obviously, not any other past meeting. But here’s what I saw: I saw a few students making points reasonably, and a lot more essentially being bullies (a few in particular I found rather scary in their self-righteousness). I heard a lot of interruption of the administrators, a number of demeaning comments (ironic, given the supposed point of the rally), and no real recognition that the President and Dean, perhaps twice the age of the students or so, had a perspective, had life experience, even worth hearing about. Now, I have no doubt that some of the grievances aired are quite valid. I’m also under no illusion that college administrators are even close to perfect! Quite the contrary: having spent a fair amount of time in academic environments, I know that academics as a group are shall we say far from immune to arrogance and the temptations of power dynamics. All the same, the students’ behavior at that meeting was ugly. The dynamics there were those of mob mentality, and I don’t think that in ten years or maybe even a few years most of the students who were there will want to watch that video again. Here’s the thing: free expression is at the very core of our country’s history, values, and principles, and within a few years nearly all of those students will find themselves in a world where not only is it very much permissible to politely disagree with them on *core* beliefs, it’s also permissible to do so bluntly, even very “offensively.” They will find themselves in a world where anyone can come up to them and disagree about abortion, same-*** marriage, affirmative action, trans issues, any number of things, and do so even sharply, annoyedly, possibly nastily. So here there seems to be terrible terrible hurt over the phrase … “CMC mold.” And what does the Dean have to say about this? She says that students speak to her all the time about feeling like they “don’t fit in,” and the phrase “CMC mold” was simply a reference to that. Obviously I can’t know for sure, but that explanation strikes me as far more likely than that she genuinely believes all students need to conform to one basic personality template, doesn’t it? But no, the students are all-seeing, all-knowing, faultless heroes and saints who don’t have to listen in good faith anymore to the hopelessly corrupt and valueless administrators. It’s a manichaean world for them.A big part of the problem here I think was the set-up. The meeting should have been in a room or lecture hall, with the participants sitting in a circle. The students could have taken turns expressing feelings or asking questions, and then giving the President and Dean the opportunity to respond — in good faith and without aggressive interruptions and demands. That might have been productive. Instead, we have a guy in a Che Guevara t-shirt barking out “silence is violence” (oh the irony, to begin with, and oh what a terribly dangerous, totalitarian phrase). We have two women actually threatening to starve themselves if a person who used the phrase “CMC mold” doesn’t resign! We have an Asian woman having her bullhorn taken away from her for speaking her *own* truth, that the person who offered *her* help in an instance of race-based insult happened to be “white,” while the insulter happened to be “black” (and note the embarrassed smiles in the crowd as it became clear what she was saying). And we have a college President placing himself bravely in such a hostile situation and *pledging* both a “temporary and permanent space” (many would not have put themselves in that position) — but receiving mostly jeering disrespect. Awful, just awful.

Well written…
The main part of being off weed is restoration of brain function. THC (main ingredient of cannabis) can acts by binding with cannabinoid receptors which present in certain area of your brain. Following exposure, it start to decrease your memory and learning function (Hippocampus) and inability of fine movement activities (Cerebellum). After quitting weed, you will be able to gain sharp memory and skillful activities in daily work.
