Boys should get HPV vaccination tooParents have been hearing a lot about the human papillomavirus, or HPV, vaccine. But what was once designed solely for girls and young women up to the age of 26 to protect them from different strains of the virus, is now also being strongly recommended for younger boys. Following in the footsteps of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending females and males at 11 to 12 years of age have routine HPV vaccinations. Doctors say the vaccine is most effective if administered before a child becomes sexually active, and responds better in the bodies of younger children, usually between the ages of 9 to 15. Young men diagnosed with HPV have also developed penile cancer and even anal cancer. These viruses, found primarily in sexually active adolescents and young adults, are the most common sexually transmitted viruses in the United States. It was also stressed in the AAP recommendations that young men having sex with other young men should be particularly careful and consider being vaccinated. The policy paper recommended that men 20 to 26 years old who have not been vaccinated for HPV, or who have not completed their series of HPV shots (the vaccine is administered in three doses), should do so as soon as possible. That’s because the CDC estimates about 7,000 HPV associated cancers in the U.S. could be prevented in young men by the HPV vaccine each year. The AAP made their decision based on data provided by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices on vaccine efficacy, safety and cost effectiveness. We allow me to educate you on the responsibility of being a man since you're father obviously did not. You have a responsiboity to protect your family and friends and loved ones. If you care enough about a women to have se-x with her you should should be man enough to care about her well being. If I can prevent my wife or any other women I have ever (prior to my marriage) or will ever should my marriage end have se-x just by getting a shot. I will Especially if the chances of harm to me were as minimal as they are with a typical vaccine. If you see it any differently you're simply not much of a man and should probably do the world a favor and not mate. We have enough worthless sc-um bags like you we don't need any more. Do the 'serious adverse effects' of the vaccine include death? Infertility? No? Then it's worth the risk to me. If you don't think so, fine. Don't have your kids get the vaccine. You have only one source, and a suspi cious one at that, to back up your claims about this vaccine. There are thousands of doctors and scientists on the other side. I'll pay heed to them, not you and Dr. Harper, regardless of her role in the vaccine's development.
Many doctors may be for Gardasil, but I think the researcher who helped Gardasil get approved and worked on the clinical trials, is a lot more trustworthy and credible.

Death has been reported by many after the Gardasil shot (see Merck's, CDC, FDA websites), and the VAERS (for reporting adverse vaccine side effects) has quite a few deaths reported – even if the company refuses to see a connection between the vaccine and the deaths, the fact remains that girls have died after getting the Gardasil shot. More research is needed to study the adverse side effects reported, which up until now the company is just dismissing as "coincidence"
One death may be coincidence but so many? Merck needs to do some research and stop seeing profits as their only motive for this vaccine

Are there as many deaths that are DIRECTLY attributed to the vaccine as are attributed to cervical cancer?
Can that link be proven? No, it cannot. There will always be risks with vaccines–those risks with Gardasil, despite your claims, are lower than the risk of having HPV develop into cervical cancer.
You are free to do whatever you wish, Voter. No one is forcing you to have your kids vaccinated. What I wonder is what's your stake in this? Do you just think you're providing a public service? Well, there is NO PROOF THAT GARDASIL WILL PREVENT CERVICAL CANCER for a 9 year old that receives the shots today. There is no proof that Gardasil will protect beyond a few years, and so far there is no booster shot.
And you do not know that Gardasil did not cause death/disabilityr. Why? Because the manufacturer chose to ignore the reports – more than one death is not a coincidence. More than one girl with neurological problems after Gardasil is not a coincidence. But they are ignoring the reports of side effects, claiming no link between the vaccine and the death/disability exists. Yet you had perfectly healthy girls who received Gardasil and died or were disabled. No explanation for what happened to them other than for all of them, it happened AFTER the gardasil shot.

Voter, this is very very dangerous logic. True, the researcher that helped discovered it is an expert on the vaccine, but once a researcher publishes their data, vaccinologists and doctors- also experts- get caught up to speed on the new discoveries. Just because the person made it doesnt mean they're the ultimate authority on it. One time I invented an awesome game and taught my friend, and once I taught him how to play, he actually turned out better than me at the game. The inventor is not necessarily the smartest or best and does not have the most credible views and should NEVER be looked to as the ultimate authority.
BUT Voter, you're right that the inventor makes a good point here. This vaccine has only been around for a few years and because of this, it has not passed the test of time. There is no data that can indefinitely say with 100% certainty that the vaccine will be effective more than 5 years after its used, the vaccine just hasn't been around long enough. But its way more outrageous to say that the vaccine kills people. To say that 3.4 out of 100,000 given the vaccine died AS A DIRECT CONSEQUENCE OF THE VACCINE is short sited. This is always a problem with vaccinations. People have the same issue with the measles/mumps/rubella vaccine. Everyone once in a while, someone incidentally faces severe symptoms after being vaccinated, but its so rare for that to happen that its impossible to link that to the vaccine. But those people blame the vaccine, try to sue, and the media is all over it and it get blown way out of proportion.It becomes big news, and reporters like Sharyl Attkisson, the author of the cbs articles whose words you're using to back your claims, approach experts in the field like Dr. Harper. Dr. Harper says, well its true that studies have shown that a tiny bit of people die after the vaccine. But like I said, these deaths are incidental and its hugely short sited to think that this means the vaccine causes disease. Attkisson doesnt understand that this is not a significant scientific finding (and who can blame her?) and writes her article thinking shes helping the world understand ths vaccine and people who are paranoid about the vaccine being deadly feel like there's big research to back it BUT THERE ISNT! Dr. Harper's study that she is referring to does not come anywhere near making a claim that the vaccine causes death. Coming from a virologist who understands how research works in our society at the root of the media reports, it kills me inside to watch authors like Attkisson misrepresent research data and then to watch the public react to it.
I mentioned that we dont know for absolute 100% certainty that this vaccine will work after 5 years simply because the vaccine hasnt been around for that long. But based on what we do know in the amount of time that we've had, we have a really really really really really really really really really good guess. We are more confident that this vaccine will benefit public health than we are confident that you wont get in a fatal car accident tomorrow on your way to work. Please trust us, we're not trying to hurt you. We're not a crazy money hungry big pharma corporation, we're experts that understand the benefits and are trying to help you. No one paid me to write this huge post on this random discussion board to a bunch of people I will never meet. I care about this and I care about public heath.

Yes, how about we give values and nobility to our boys and girls. Maybe we can skip the side effects of the vaccine. For the young people at our (KH)church who stick to those values, they are married, happy and without disease. Just saying, the old values still work.

That's really a great idea, but this virus can be passed from parent to child. There is no test available for women or men who do not have symptoms (other than a DNA screening). Women typically find out they have it, without outwardly visible symptoms, as the result of an abnormal PAP smear. This is how I was diagnosed with it. The nurse that gave me the results told me that at least 80% of the U.S. population has had this virus at some point in their life, and there are almost 100 different forms of the virus. Some cause genital warts, and some can lead to cervical cancer (which is the form I have). Fortunately, in many people with the virus, the body does fight off the infection, and they can continue to lead normal, healthy lives.

Boys don't need it. Girls don't need it. Vaccines are a huge, money-making scam. They don't work. They're unsafe. The very fact they promote this vaccine as a cancer vaccine should raise some antennae. It's NOT a cancer vaccine, but they try to fool people into thinking it is because HPV be itself is not scary enough. They have to create fear or no sane person would get this or any vaccine.

We have here a disease with significant public health consequences which can only be stopped if those infected with it stop transmitting it. Well, that doesn't work with STD's. It didn't work with syphilis or AIDS, it doesn't work with chlamydia or gonorrhea and it certainly isn't going to work with an infection that produces no symptoms in half of the population. Am very surprised to see the anti-vaccination brigade here. I have trouble understanding them. They are either utterly disconnected from reality or too young to recall all of the standard "childhood diseases" which were once a rite of passage and occasionally fatal. I never had to go through the measles, German measles, mumps, polio, diphtheria (when's the last time you heard of cases of these among vaccinated individuals in the U.S.?). I have no fear of tetanus or certain types of pneumonia. My nephew, 14, is not entirely certain what chicken pox is (mind, I recall vividly).

The majority of women do not go on to develop cervical cancer, Tom. 95% of people who get HPV successfully fight the virus without further complications. You can read about it in any website, CDC, Cancer society, FDA, etc.

It is disturbing to me how many people here refuse to think this is a positive thing. You must all thing your children are and will be perfect little angels and wait til marriage to have sex.
All it takes is one time to get this virus, even if they use protection. With everything in life, comes risks. However, I see the better chance of good health in taking the vaccine as opposed to possible cancer/other concerns. I understand the point that it is still new, especially for the boys side. but I would much rather know that I am safe in the aspect of getting HPV which can lead to cancer.

I'm glad I'm not a parent and faced with making this decision. I'm leary of the vaccine myself, as I feel as though it was rushed into production and there have been problems with some girls receiving it. Yes, a minor number of cases vs those given the shot, but there were still problems. I'm not trying to say all vaccines are bad – heck I had my fair share of them growing up. However, I was not auto-immune (thyroid and psoriasis that I know of so far) prior to having an MMR booster shot in my 30's prior to returning to college. I would seriously have to debate the issue with myself and my doctors before allowing a child to receive this one.

Both my mom and sister have HPV. It seems to be so common now at days. And I love how those against the vaccine call others sheeple, not realizing that they're doing the same. The people who do not receive the vaccine will benefit from those who do because they will live in a world with less HPV hanging around. Their kids and grand kids who they will "protect" from vaccination will likely have sex with someone who had the vaccine and will be protected indirectly. They will benefit from herd immunity as a result of most people getting the vaccine. They won't miss anything, except that horrible rapidly advancing cancer that they could have had. But no credit will be given either. Like a lot of the benefits if public health aren't recognized. We take for granted the advances of this field because it's human nature to be less concerned with what is not in front us. Public health measures have silently prevented immeasurable misery. Maybe pharmaceuticals have interest in making money, but when it comes down to protecting the public, health organizations are pretty good at getting down to business. I'm not sure how all these vaccination myths got started.

You are ignorant. The reason the government set up the VAERS system was to prevent manufacturers from frivolous lawsuits that would result in their decision to stop all vaccine manufacturing. That would have meant shortages of vaccines that prevent diseases, and would have forced the US to buy vaccines from places like China.

As a survivor of cervical cancer who was robbed of her ability to carry my child, I know first hand why this vaccine is so important to our youth. We buy car insurance for our kids, but we aen't advocating for them to have an accident. We are protecting them just incase their is an accident. I see the HPV vaccine the same way. Human beings are hard-wired to desire intimate, sexual contact and no one calls home for permission to have sexual experiences. So as parents we have to do the responsible thing and vaccinate our child early before sex is even on their radar. If you still aren't sure read HOW I LOST MY UTERUS and FOUND MY VOICE...you'll learn quickly why we must protect our children and ourselves...not doing so could cost us our life, fertility of that of someone we love.
This is a great idea since women do not develop the HPV, but get it from men who are the carries. If men are vaccinated against the virus, it will reduce chances of women getting cervical cancer and other infections caused by the virus. It is sad that men are the carriers yet women are the ones who carry a greater burden of it.
