Small changes bring big results for triathleteEditor's Note: Carlos Solis from Ontario, California, is one of 7 CNN viewers selected to train with CNN for the Nautica Malibu Triathlon in September. This past weekend, the "Lucky 7" came together in Atlanta for their first training sessions with coaches April Burkey and Laura Cozik. Sitting here on the plane trip back from Atlanta, I am reminiscing about the small changes I have recently made in my life as I pursue the goal of completing my first triathlon, and the powerful effect they have already had. One small run for the record, one giant stride for me Ever had to think on your feet before? Well, I literally had to think on my feet this weekend! I had only gone a quarter lap of my first timed mile in almost thirty years and my calves were already screaming at me. So, I made one small adjustment by shortening my stride and I was able to not only finish the run, but - according to my trainer, Dave Ruby - do it in a respectable 13:24. Finishing for me was an emotional experience. I’m lovin’ it Recently, I’ve started to take our first grade son out for “Breakfast with Dad.” This is guy time where we just hang out, do some scripture work, talk about stuff and re-connect. How? I remembered the reason I was doing this, and it wasn’t to bond with 570 calories, 32 grams of fat, 52 grams of carbs, and 1470 grams of sodium. I’ll live with 290 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 57 carbs and 160 mgs of sodium thank you very much! Small change, BIG results! Ringing in a new size Remember when Lucy Ricardo lost her wedding ring and found it in her hamburger? Well, here’s my story with just as good of an ending. During our second swim this weekend, as I was working with Coach Laura on my swim technique, I felt my wedding ring slip right off my finger! Panic spread throughout my body as I frantically looked for it at the bottom of the pool. The thought of losing something so special to me was more than I could handle; I was overcome with emotion and tears. When I finally found it, tears of joy kicked in, but the tears didn’t stop there. Once I recovered from getting it back, I realized that my wedding ring had actually slipped off. This is the same ring that years ago, was re-sized because I was gaining a lot of weight. Even after I had it enlarged, I never thought I would see the day when it would actually slide off all on its own. Yes, more tears. I was emotionally spent, but I still needed to finish my laps. Now, off to the jeweler to have it re-sized. Small change, BIG result! |

Carlos, What a great weekend I had with you and the others. You are an awesome guy, and I know you're going to go far with this, and other adventures in your life.
Carlos - I told so many stories about you to my students when I got back... How you had this quiet calm about you even when you were suffering with extreme back pain. How you smiled through it tall. And how you made me reevaluate what I considered to be pain. You inner strength is something and I am so glad to call you a friend and teammate!
Rome was not built on 1 day. intervals are them stones of mind & body to build Rome. I think Rome was built by the athelets themslves. Like the way we build ourselves from star rolemodels in our memories, you can do all you want to, and be a rolemodel for your son ! enjoy it all you want to !
What is "scripture work"? And what does it have to do with training for a triathlon?
Running a triathlon isn't all about muscles. Carlos is already strong in his Inner Man, that's why he's able to enter this triathlon, and do what hes doing. I have known him all his life. He is my Brother. I wish everyone could share his personal values and faith, like he and I share.

I think that Scripture work most likely means bible study. My guess is that Faith is not only a part of his lifestyle but also a point from which to leap in new directions, like the one Carlos is taking now. We ALL have faith in something. 😉
