What the Yuck: My pee is bright green!

Too embarrassed to ask your doctor about sex, body quirks, or the latest celeb health fad? In a regular feature and a new book, "What the Yuck?!," Health magazine medical editor Dr. Roshini Raj tackles your most personal and provocative questions. Send 'em to Dr. Raj at whattheyuck@health.com.

Q: My pee is suddenly bright green, even though I drink tons of water. What’s going on?

Normally, the color of your urine should be between almost clear and dark yellow.

Neon-green pee may look alarming, but it’s usually just a sign that you’re getting too much of certain vitamins - B vitamins, in particular - and that your body is flushing out the excess.

That said, if you notice it regularly, talk to your doc about whether you should cut back on your B intake.

Never had this problem. I'm probably lacking in a whole bunch, even for how fit and healthy I eat.

Green could also just be from eating asparagus.

One day my young daughter came in from school and went straight to the bathroom. She came out very scared, said her urine was green. I had put a green toilet freshner in the tank.

When did it become acceptable to use words like pee or poop? When I was a kid, I would have been sent to my room for using either vulgarity.

    I am asking seriously........I don't like it.

I was brought up that way too. it was and/or sounded UGLY to say such raw words. we were scolded for saying "pregnant" we had to say "With child' even though the correct Medical term is pregnant... and in this case "urine or feces" would be more appropriate back in the day.. welcome to the new world. people just talk now. that's all. Glad I'm not alone. Its uncomfortable for me too sometimes.

Maybe it's an indication not to take vitamins?

A study shows that people that take vitamins on regular basis die about 5 years earlier than people that don't take vitamins at all.

    Mine's been a light green /yellow for a while, and I don't know why.
It's been that color before, but I think it has something to do with the vitamins I'm taking.
When ever I'm lazy of tired and stuff, it comes out that colour. But when I'm active and sleep well, it gets yellow again.
I didn't tell my parents yet, because it's not that big of a deal, but I am happy to know that this is quite normal.

    Perhaps it's just angry?
    Get it?
... because the hulk turns green... when he is angry...
In all seriousness, energy drinks such as Red Bull and Monster (especially Monster) may turn your urine green if you drink to much of it.

Mine has been pale yellowish-green all my life, but maybe it's my vision. I'm healthy, according to my doctor. But it only looks that way in the commode, not in a specimen cup. Maybe it's the lighting.

So helpful I accidentally took two vitimins that were totally strong and this shade of neon green was dramatic. So glad I found this page because it reminded me to always remember to remember when I take anything!

Green urine most commonly is a byproduct of a species of bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This bacterium lives in the bowel, but can be transferred to the urinary tract when toilet tissue is applied with a forward motion rather than with a backward motion. Some people who have liver cancer can also have green urine, as can some people who drink huge amounts of green tea. Green urine is sometimes noted after toxic exposure to the pesticide paraquat.

The anesthetic profofol can cause green urine, as can certain medications for Parkinson’s disease.

I am not discrediting any of the comments in this blog, However, if you are really concerned why not do a little research? I have and came up with this... a green tinted urine can be an indication of possible urinary tract infection or a possible bacterial infection in the blood. My opinion is if you are concerned to definately consult your doctor, I myself have Follicular Lymphoma which is a cancer within the lymphocytes,,, white blood cells. I will be seeing my Oncologist soon and will question it. So, I would suggest to confer with a doctor.

I’ve recently resumed my vitamin regime and noticed a bright yellowish green tinge to my urine. Perhaps the amount of vitamins is too much.
