HIV out of control in most U.S. patients

Three out of four people with HIV in the United States do not have their infection under control, even though anti-HIV drugs have been available for more than 15 years, according to a study released Tuesday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“That’s a very poor rate. We have to do much better than that,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Keeping HIV under control is crucial not only for the 1.2 million people in the United States who carry the infection, but also for their sexual partners. Suppressing the virus decreases the chances it will be transmitted to a sexual partner by more than 95%, Fauci said.

“Treatment is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of HIV infection."

There are many reasons why only 28% of people with HIV have the virus under control. According to the CDC, 20% of people with HIV don’t even know they have it, and among those who’ve been diagnosed, only half are receiving regular care for their disease.

Many can’t afford treatment for their HIV, which totals about $367,000 over a lifetime, according to the CDC.

Since testing is the first step in receiving the proper care, the CDC is targeting specific high-risk groups. The agency has a new program called “Testing Makes Us Stronger” that encourages gay and bisexual black men to get tested for the virus.

“Black gay and bisexual men across the country are already doing many of the right things to protect themselves - but more need to make HIV testing a regular part of their lives,” Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and Tuberculosis Prevention, said in a press release.

The website HIVtest.org helps people find testing - including free testing - where they live.

There were high hopes that women could use a gel to destroy the HIV virus, or at least reduce its chances of causing infections. But this week the National Institutes of Health announced that the gel, which contains the drug tenofovir, worked no better than a placebo, so this particular arm of  the study was shut down.

The gel is supposed to be applied to the vagina or rectum before sex, and Fauci said he suspects many of the women weren’t using it.

“The fact that we didn’t see protection was a disappointment,” he added.

Researchers are still studying if tenofovir in pill form combined with another HIV drug, emtricitabine, can safely and effectively prevent HIV transmission in women.

Most people who have HIV, the virus that can lead to AIDS, have no spyotmms for several years. Some people get flu spyotmms within a few months after infection, but there is no way to tell the difference between flu spyotmms caused by HIV and flu spyotmms caused by flu.Testing can detect antibodies to HIV within 3 to 6 months after someone gets infected. (More than 98% of people who have HIV would test positive within 3 months. Very rarely, it may take up to 6 months for someone to test positive.)IMPORTANT: Within a day or 2 after someone is infected, they can pass the virus on to other people. This is long before spyotmms would appear, and before they would test positive. Also, HIV is not transmitted 100% of the time. Someone may be exposed to HIV several times and not get infected. However, it is also possible for someone to get infected by just ONE exposure.

I work in ER as a crisis worker. My take: The government, the powers that be have an insidious, chilling agenda...Let them die! Little effort has ever really been put into tackling this issue outside the drug companies and their money making agendas as its been largely considered to be about drug addicts and gays. So why bother? Like mental health, its always bottom of the pile. The US doesn't want them anyway, I care, but they don't and won't. That's the crux of the matter.

Ronald Reagan had a hand in this epidemic. He cut funding for diagnosis and research just as the epidemic was getting started. He said that research in AIDS was "too much guvment."

My partner has been living with HIV for about 30 years and is very healthy and I have had it for about 10 years and am also healthy. I was in the military when I was younger and so I have VA medical that pays for my drugs and my partner is using the Ryan White program for his. We take good care of ourselves and eat right and take our meds, so we've been nondetectable for many years with no problems so far. I do feel sorry for anyone that doesn't have a system in place to pay for the meds because they can be expensive, but there are many programs out there that can help and should be looked into. One guy talked about colodial silver and we have a friend that has been off of his meds for about 5 years and takes silver and is also very healthy. His doctor is amazed and can't explain it. So maybe that would be an option for those who can't afford it.

In 2002, the five most expensive health conditions were heart disease, cancer, trauma, mental disorders, and pulmonary conditions

68% of the people in the usa have high blood presure
    4%  cancer
    15.4% physical disability      trauma
    3.5%   mental disorders
    6%          pulmonary conditions
97% of the people in the USA have an expensive health condition –  leaving 3% of the people to make up the difference –
that healthcare pyrimide scam isn't going to work either –

      Doug, paragraph 5 says:

"There are many reasons why only 28% of people with HIV have the virus under control."

That squares with 72%, or approximately three quarters, not under control.

The 28% is the number of people that DO have it under control. The remaining 72% (approximately 3 out of 4) do not.

The state of Washington has recently, since the beginning oof the year has cut lots of medical programs. An Ex boyfriend, HIV positive had been on state medical assistance since being diagnosed. He was receiving free medical care and medication only related to his HIV, he also received basic dental. Several months ago Washington state, and I can only speak on his case discontinued paying for his medication, which varied in price since he tested positive to cost anywhere from $1,200 to $1,800 per month. They discontinued the medication services which is the most important but will continue his medical and dental. If he does not take the meds his viral load and CD4 numbers will get worse, therefore causing increase office and hospital visits, increased labs and xrays and maybe other expensive proceduresm Now, how the heck does that make any sense? Also didn't Obama pass a law saying there can be no more insurance problems related to pre-exisiting conditions?

It really sucks that this is true. I'm a premed student so I take a particularly interest in all kinds of diseases. HIV I've always found to be the most impressive. The virus has the ability to incorporate itself into a host's DNA to delay detection. It can also change it's protein binding structure to avoid detection, then it attacks the helper T cells which initiate the immune response. And the way it's spread, it's ability to evolve are also amazing to me. Technically viruses are not alive but I find HIV to be the second most impressive form of "life" on this planet; second only to humans. It's quite horrible what it will do to a person, and anyone afflicted has my deepest sympathies.

Well duh. America is way behind most other countries when it comes to providing medical care for its citizens. Like...37 out of 190. Fun facts: we are behind countries like Chile and Costa Rica, but at least we are slightly ahead of Slovenia. And this is from a list produced 10 years ago. We are probably more like 60 now. Time to stop drinking Republican's and Big Pharma's Kool-Aid. People love to spout off about how we lead the world in healthcare, but we only lead it in developing profitable procedures. Unless you have the $$$, it doesn't do you jack squat good (and good luck if you have a rare disorder or in a minority, because unless they can juice your bank account, insurance companies and pharma don't want anything to do with you or developing a cure for whatever you have).

Saboth, you make very good points. Our healthcare system should have never started out as a "for-profit" system. It invited nothing but greed and abuse. Channeled monies only to those areas where "profit" could be produced rather than overall health of the nation being the goal. There are so many common neglected diseases that have very limited treatment options b/c there is "no money" in developing those treatments. And millions suffer b/c of this.

Maybe they got it wrong? Many scientists don't believe HIV causes AIDS. There are many, many AIDS cases where no HIV virus is detectable. The CDC doesn't call it AIDS if they can't detect HIV, as that would ruin their theory.

Mean Bean, try looking up the definition of AIDS. When a person's CD4 count goes below 200, they have AIDS. Its a benchmark, not a completely different virus. Or, its when an Opportunistic infection shows up that is related only to HIV/AIDS. Do your homework before posting ignorant statements.

The insane cost, lack of doctor familiarity, stigma and lack of testing all contribute. Were it not for ADAP I have no idea what I would do. I started reacting badly to one drug a while back and had to change meds. To do this the Dr. took me off all of them for a few weeks. My viral load skyrocketed and I got very sick. Gratefully we were able to switch meds to something I can tolerate for now. The sad part is just because it works now doesn't mean over the long haul the body might start to react badly to a medication. I hope I never lose my ability to obtain the meds or have to change again. It took months to fully recover from the horrible re-infection. Yeah, calling it "manageable" is a stretch at best. Even with a drug regimen that works there are still issues, side effects and many illnesses to which you will always be more susceptible.

These drugs are EXPENSIVE. With all due respect, without a nationalized health insurance that is affordable, how are these people supposed to afford these drugs? The answer: They cannot.
We either need less expensive private insurance (mine is 390-425 a month, yes, it fluctuates) or we need a nationalized option.

All i'm saying is all victims of AIDS need medical help to prevent the spreading of the virus. No specific group deserve more help than the other. In fact. there are more whites with AIDS than any other group in the United States. How many percent of the U.S population is white? How many are African American, Latino, Asian and so...? Which group has the highest probability of spreading the disease? Are there more black gay men than whites??? Go do more research and revise commentary ethics ...please.

Ladies and gentleman I want to first say how great it is to read your comments and see so many people are passionate about doing there part to produce a positive outcome for all americans and mankind as a whole. I do not have HIV however I perform my due diligence and get tested every six months. Having said that the dollar amount the CDC claims a person will spend in a lifetime purchasing meds is unbelievable. I agree with the majority of you when its said that HIV should be considered a matter of public safety. Medications should be free to all under that ideology. Unfortunately we all know money and power rules the world. With this economic climate politicians see this as another bill for the people to foot. Not getting off topic obama care as it stands sucks but I was under the impression that the end result would be that every american would have medical coverage and it wouldn't be a luxury for just the wealthy thereby making meds for HIV affordable for all! That is where I thought that measure would go. The other point I wanted to make was in reference to pharmaceutical companies. The coldest words I have ever been told is there is no profit in a cure! If I'm a ceo of a pharmaceutical company what will make me more money? A cure or new and invasive medications/procedures that will allow an infant to live a comfortable life with this disease until there in there golden years! That is the issue they face. To hear that ?millions of americans get innfected everyday makes there eyes light up with dollar signs like a cartoon! These are just a couple of my concerns. Thanks for reading.

Magic Johnson and/or his insurance companies have spent over 240,000 on HIV medications so far. That doesn't count blood work or doctors visits, just medication. That's based on $1,000 a month for medications. Money is an issue, but so is the stigma. You can't serve in the US military (combat or otherwise), you can't be a truck driver instructor for CR England in Utah, and the Pope along with his other zealot goons wish HIV+ dead on the regular. Science is on the verge of putting HIV into the same category as thousands of other organism that coexist in our body without seriously damaging the host. Stem cell research is already getting us there. We would have conquered many such diseases already except ex-Prez Bush's ban on Fed funding of stem cell research. Vaccines are still a very necessary next step. Perhaps immunity focusing protiens can enhance recognition of the virus to prevent cell infection. Similar work has shown success in the spread of cancer and DNA manipulation or a combination of strategies that make "T" cells more resilient to broad spectrum of viruses. Until recently the work has been to focus on specific cancers, diseases and auto-immune problems. Free blood tests should be offered twice each year, regardless of ability to pay in addition to regular swab tests.

Back in the late 80s and early 90s, there was risk of not being aware of how to avoid contracting this disease, because it was still slightly new to some people. Unless your are born with it these days, the chances that you personally are at least somewhat responsible for contraction are great. That doesn't mean you should be forgotten about though, and the key factor to bring to light is the mechanism the 'system' uses is no longer sufficient to care for the sick. That is why this information in the article is being promulgated, so don't use this board as a chance for a cheap-shot comment, as I'm certain none of us on Earth have yet to cast a first stone.

HIV infection has four basic sgtaes which are the incubation period, acute infection, latency stage and AIDS. The initial incubation period usually lasts between two and four weeks. The second stage, acute infection, lasts an average of 28 days and can include symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, rashes, muscle pain, and also mouth sores. The latency stage, which occurs on the third stage, shows few or no symptoms and can last anywhere from two weeks to twenty years and beyond. AIDS, the fourth and final stage of HIV infection shows as symptoms of various infections and tumors, unexplained weight loss, respiratory tract infection, skin rashes, and oral ulcerations.

If you're really eowrird about it, don't go to your doctor. There are always places where you can get tested and have the results kept confidential. Look in your city phone book, yellow pages. If you don't see anything, then look for your local LGBT equality center and they can tell you where one is, or call the AIDS Hotline, they can give you the location of your nearest testing site. With most of these places, the testing is free, however, if you want the results back right away, there is usually a charge, and you can get the results usually within 24 hours. If you opt to not pay, it takes a couple of weeks to get your test results back. In most of the places, you don't even have to give your name, they give you a number, and match your number to your test results.

Wow, you really are phiaettc. Newflash, genius. Women want sex as much as we do. You don't hold as much sexual power as you think you do. So get over yourself.Marry you or move along? That's very easy. There or many women out there who don't need to be married to have sex.Oh, and quit acting like it's the fault of men that you get aids. Last time I checked you can spread aids to us. Maybe we men should give YOU an ultimatum instead.
