Colon cleansing: Not so healthy, analysis says
It has been touted as a natural way to improve your heath and cleanse the soul. But doctors are now finding the procedure known as colon cleansing can cause dangerous side effects.
Colon cleansing, technically known as colonic hydrotherapy or colonic irrigation, is a popular treatment, usually performed at spas. It often involves the use of chemicals in the body and in hydrotherapy, the colon is flushed with water through a tube inserted in the rectum.
But oral home remedies are also available and have become popular, especially over the Internet. Now researchers from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. say there's no evidence any of these colon cleansing treatments work and, in fact, when used improperly can cause cramping, kidney failure and in some extreme cases, death.
"There can be serious consequences for those who engage in colon cleansing whether they have the procedure done at a spa or perform it at home," says the lead author, Dr. Ranit Mishori, a family medicine physician at Georgetown University School of Medicine. "Colon cleansing products in the form of laxatives, teas, powders and capsules... tout benefits that don't exist."
Mayo doctor is no fan of cleanses
Although colon cleansing has been around for centuries as a way to rid the body of unwanted toxins, the American Medical Association determined in the early 1900s that the procedure was invalid; there was no evidence to show the methods worked. And even though there still remains no solid evidence these products do what they claim, colon cleansing has been making a comeback, mainly because manufacturers claim it also helps people lose weight.
"If this method were the key to weight loss, it would be amazing. But there is no evidence that this helps people lose weight,” says Mishori. "Manufacturers don't describe how it works. The statements are a little empty. They say it will enhance your immune system, up your metabolism, give you energy. It’s all pretty vague. Some people swear by it, but it could be a placebo effect. And companies can make these claims, because the federal government doesn't regulate their products."
Not expecting miracles, but I love my cleanses
According to the report released this week in the Journal of Family Practice, Mishori and her colleagues examined 20 studies published in medical literature over the last 10 years.
Investigators noted while these reports showed little evidence of colon cleansing benefits, there were a number of side effects reported following the use of these cleansing methods. Those effects included cramping, bloating, nausea, vomiting, electrolyte imbalance and renal failure. And in some cases, ingredients in these remedies were toxic.
"Some herbal preparations have also been associated with aplastic anemia and liver toxicity," Mishori said.
Researchers also noted that many of the "spas" that offer colon cleansing have no trained clinicians and even organizations such as the National Board for Colon Hydrotherapy and others who promote colon cleansing require technicians who perform professional colon cleansing to have little more than a high school diploma.
"When you flush your colon out with a hose, it's like giving yourself an enema on steroids. You shouldn't put things up there that really don't belong there," stressed Mishori. "Imagine 60 liters of water going through your colon. The stress it puts on the system, and the hose, if not used correctly, could puncture the organ."
As for the home remedies, Mishori says there's no need for them. "We poop and pee for a reason. If you are a healthy person, the body does it for you."
When asked what was the best way to cleanse the body, Mishori was quick to respond.
"Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly," she stressed, "Get six to eight hours of sleep and see a doctor regularly. But no one wants to do that," she said with exasperation. "But they'll use a hose to flush themselves out! The use of these methods are unhealthy. And what's scary is we only examined the cases that were reported to hospitals and doctors. Imagine all the people who are using these products and methods and have side effects and never go to the hospital. We don't know about them. The numbers could be staggering."

Lol, the idiots will keep squirting water up their butts anyway and why should we try to stop them? They have to get the evil magic toxins.
What about colon cleansing for colonoscopys, is this still safe. Surely there is some safe effective way to colon cleanse not for weight loss but for overall health.
Eat a healthy diet with the recommended amount of fiber. Don't eat any solid foods or opaque liquids prior to a colonoscopy and you'll be clear.
There's no such thing as "alternative medicine." If something can be PROVEN to work, it's just called "medicine."
No freakin' way! You mean shoving a hose up your rectum isn't good for you? There's beneficial bacterium that live there that help to further break down organic waste. All you're doing is washing them out of you like some colonic waterslide.
gee, seems like we've got the TCM bigots out here...wondering how many are placebo driven vs. money driven...oh well.....
"www.colonblow.com"...are you friggin' KIDDING ME? You quote as an authority someone who has a web site called "Colon Blow"?, while knocking the medical establishment?
The only colon that needs flushing is the US Congress. Put a hose in there and wash that constipated crap out of office.
Beyond that, a lot of people are incurably stupid.
Colon cleanse is a more acceptable term for enema. It is an enema!!!!!!!!!!! You can do it at home if you are agile. Some people pay lots of money to have someone do it for you. It is not a healthy practice!
If I do not have a BM one day, all I do is drink about 10 ounces of Prune Juice With Fiber after dinner that same day. I always have a good BM the next day or 2. In addition, another way to have a BM is to drink tea or coffee that has caffeine during the day. You can then wait until you have to urinate very badly. Frequently, you will have a BM at the same time as urinating. I probably have some IBS problems, but all of these methods work well for me and I never have to flush my system like is discussed above.
Oh wait, people where getting these treatments for medical benefits? And here I thought it was just an auto erotic thing.
Drink really strong coffee. That should do it.
For me, all I'll say is that plenty of water, some 'roughage' as older people used to say, more vegetables than meat, beans, fruits and the like plus exercise do the trick for me. I do fast every once in a while...a day of fasting with nothing but water or juice and plenty of rest. I'm 59 and feeling fine.
I have been getting colonics for 30 years, and it is the best thing you could possibly do for your body. The lymph system drains into your colon, so when you get a colonic, you are cleaning the lymph system as well. This study does not test the health of people who have gotten colonics regularly, and those who have not, so it tells us nothing. And I am the only 58 year old I know that is still playing basketball with teenagers.
COLONICS ROCK....got through 5 cancers using only alternative medicine and modalities.....CNN health is full of BS...they are like sheep following the Western medicine.....just make sure your colonic therpists do refloristation.....
What are 'therpists'?
5 cancers, sure. It's not only bad for your body, but for your mind either.
To Chris: where are you getting your physiology/anatomy information?! The lymph system drains into the subclavian veins (around your collar bone) via the thoracic duct... I think it is thanks to the currently poor basic science training in the U.S. that people still rely on anecdotal evidence as opposed to the kind of rigorous, scientific meta-analyses that CNN is reporting on here. Much to be done about this issue...
More moronic crap from CNN. Colonic cleansing is one of the healthiest things you can possibly to. I got 50 ft of mucoid plaque out of my intestines and look and feel 20 years younger because of it. Never look to CNN for health information. CNN – you should just stick to covering Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson.
Dude, pick up a physiology book. You got 50 feet of the same capsule crap that you ingested out of yourself, nothing more.
Jason...you are the moron. And I think Micheal Jackson was into colon cleansing and look what it did for him. Did you read the article?
The 50 feet of crap came from the cleanse stuff you ingested. It forms a black gel in the colon, takes on the shape of the inside of the colon, and comes out like a black snake with odds and ends from your digestive tract stuck in it.
@ohsnap: Yeah...so much for all of those scientists, PHD's and otherwise learned people agreeing that something like this is...crap. Right? All of those years of education clearly are no match from the voluminous experience and education brought to the CNN boards by one, "ohsnap"!
How dare science and facts disagree with you. Silly facts. They should know better.
Well, EWWWWWWWW. A little too much information.
@Jason King: Yeah...so much for all of those scientists, PHD's and otherwise learned people agreeing that something like this is...crap. Right? All of those years of education clearly are no match from the voluminous experience and education brought to the CNN boards by one, "Jason King"!
How dare science and facts disagree with you. Silly facts. They should know better. Geez.
No you did not. You never had a "mucoid plaque" in your intestine to begin with. Perhaps you BELIEVE you had a mucoid plaque, but you didn't. Sorry. You wasted your money on an expensive enema.
Amazing that people think some miracle occurred when they pull stool out of a tube designed to hold stool.
Moronic crap is someone believing that they need a colonic cleanse or that it's normal to have some measure how many feet of gunk comes out of their bowels. Good lord, you are equipped with a perfectly normal digestive system that shouldn't need mechanical help except in the case of health issues. A normal healthy person does not need any form of cleansing.
When you take a car to a mechanic do you believe them when they tell you they replaced your muffler bearings?
Do up to 14 colonoscopies in a day and I can assure the rest of us, there are not "feet" of toxins and refuse clinging to our bowel walls. The first 20 feet or so of the bowel is surprisingly clean. The last several can usually be cleaned with a few liters of the preparation. Is colon detox hype? Yes, yes it is
Wow. You have issues. Health-conscious people drink plenty of water, eat fruits, veggies, beans and whole grains and do not need artificial ways of "cleansing." For those who need a boost, eat ground flax seeds daily in your yogurt or cereal. Shoving chemicals up your butt is not healthy.
You're quite the naive, gullible sucker. Aren't you?
50ft is nothing I got me a mile long crap
Interesting... The OP got 50 feet of mucous (not mucoid) plaques out of an intestine that is 26 feet long. Perhaps some of this plaque originated from further up... way up. Seriously though, this mucous lining is supposed to be in there and removing it could lead to severe infection. I use a bidet and merely clean the exterior, a process which encourages waste to exit. This is especially helpful for users who suffer chronic constipation. But that's as far as I go. The insides are there for a reason, so why mess with them.
Can you say, "Placebo effect?" There are thousands of stupid and unproven treatments out there. The psychology of humans is such that if someone tells you that ABC will happen and you want to believe it will happen, then POOF, it happens. Especially for thinks that make you 'feel' better. nothing that a little hypnotherapy won't fix, and your bowels will still work!
AMEN AMEN AMEN......THIS IS CRAP REPORTING....SHALL WE SAY FOLLOW THE MONEY....
Brenda Watson and Richard Anderson are experts on this topic and there are many doctors in the united states who are in favor of this procedure.
I am always amazed how the media are to publish the latest study results without researching the facts at deeper level.
No, they aren't.
Jason: if you could provide even the slightest bit of actual evidence for your claim, you'd not only be a very rich man, but you'd win the admiiration of billions and perhaps even a nobel prize. alas, you can't. so, you call cnn 'moronic' and wave your arms about and point to anectodal 'feel good' stories – anything, anything at all to distract away from the fact that there is no actual, verifiable evidence backing up your claim. You sir, are a disgusting human being.
How do they know that after the process their colon is actually cleaned? I don't think the white glove test would work here...
Maybe they could swallow the white glove. If it comes out white, mission accomplished. :-0
DON'T YOU JUST LOVE THE SHEEP THAT BELIEVE WHAT CNN WROTE/????
I used to wonder about colonic cleansing until I had a sigmoidoscopy done which is viewing several inches of the interior colon...mine was clean and pink, no impacted feces or stuff stuck to the walls of my intestine making me sick like those infomercials say all of us have. I was convinced then that as long as you go regularly and add more fiber to your diet there is no need for a colon cleanse...waste of money.
Exactly. I had a colonoscopy done and am perfectly healthy. There is no reason or need to "cleanse" one's colon-it isn't full of "toxins" or "gunk". It's doing its job.
I agree. I had this done one time. All I can say is that I need to chew my food better. As for getting a colon cleanse, the best way for colon health is to eat plenty fruits and vegetable, drink plenty water, and use flaxseed. The flaxseed turns into a expanded sticky gel when activated by water/juices. It helps to soften the stool and assist in moving stubborn food particle. The reason people have colon issues is due to their eating habits and not doing a complete dump. What I mean is, when you dump, you should elevate your legs on a stool/step. This will give you a complete dump. Another thing one can do before they spend $$$ on a colonics, prepare fresh juiced beets and drink it. See how long it takes to see it in your dump. If its more than a week, you have a problem and should start eating more fiber, fruits, and drinking water. Your body is design to work. All the body need is for you to give it the right stuff to function properly. Colonics rids all bacteria and if you don't load up on some probiotics, you are in trouble. Also, while I'm on this doo doo subject. Another way to good colon health is to eat the right food combinations. If you are eating a lot of starches and protein together, your are not doing your digestive system justice. You are only increasing your use of insulin and creating a bad environment in your colon. Best advice, learn how to eat properly and your body will love you for it.
PSSSTTTTTTTT I got some swam land in Arizona to sell you......btw, why do you follow after the Western white coats, don't you know they will kill you.....:-)))
People just like things shoved up their.............
Yeah, that's the most likely explanation.
@ Humanasyou: you, Cleopatra, Ray, and about 15 other posters here could be subjected to lobotomies, but the surgeons would be so bored they'd fall asleep at the table. The stupidity of some of the posts here is unbelievable. The colon cleansing lobby can be summed up thusly: There is no scientific proof that colon cleanses do ANY good, therefore those who favor them must resort to anecdote. Most of the posts from these nut-cases are incoherent, ungrammatical, and full of misspelled words. A great number of them pretend that doctors are uneducated concerning nutrition and are not trustworthy, only money-grubbing ghouls who want people to be sick, yet fail to acknowledge that colon cleansing snake oil salesmen are making a profit with these bogus "treatments". The crazies here believe they, herbalists, naturopaths, and infomercial producers are better educated and more knowledgeable about medicine than doctors, but the nuts show in every post they know nothing about anatomy or biology.
If you boneheads can't:
1. Show proof that colon cleansing does any good, using peer-reviewed materials
2. Show that those selling the crap you're buying aren't making a profit
then you're nothing but stupid or dishonest. You're full of manure and it's not the kind that can be fixed with some colon blow.
What you ask is not possible. How would you conduct a double blind study of people get colon cleansing? How do you create a placebo effect? Thus the existing literature can only detail problems not outcomes.
Are not doctor's also making a profit by stopping people from doing this activity and encouraging them to see them instead?
You are blinded by science. Come away from the light.
It appears to really irritate you that some have had positive outcomes from the activity.
Are yiou a doctor, or someone in the medical profession that has a vested interest in eliminating alternative medicine?
Did you lose a loved one while being treated with alternative medicine?
You appear to be slightly obsessive about this topic, grammar and spellling.
Perhaps you should seek treatment from the medical professionals you so fervantly believe.
I hope I did not misspell any words and thus garner your wrath.
Try to enjoy the rest of your day,
tomtom, why are you so bitter? If someone wants to use an alternative method, wether it works or not, it is their right and it is legal. Did you forget that your beloved MD's use to advertise cigarettes on TV as healthy? Remember thalydomide? It sounds like you've had an enema gone bad...
tom tom. You speak like a shill for the AMA. I don't think the best colon cleanse in the world would clear that wild hair that's growing in your rectum. It's time for you to seek a psychoproctologist.
Says the idiot who sells this snake oil. Really, you ought to be put out of business for being a charlatan.
Really, you idiots are so laughable. Scott, learn how to use an apostrophe and then you can move on to colons.
I'm not bitter-I'm just fed up with the blowhards and pompous jackazzes here who proclaim the AMA, pharmaceutical companies, and doctors to be charlatans.
And I notice none of you can prove that colonics work nor have you proved them to be harmless. Why is that? Just bitter, or just lame, Scott?
How dare you demand scientific evidence to support the benefits of water shooting up Scott's ass,Tom?! Scott's right: You do need to have a nice day. I suggest you buy my "Nice Day" mood boosting elixir for $59.99; Scott already did! Is it working yet Scott?
Hey, Herp, I got some nice swamp land in central Kansas for sale-perc tested and everything! Lemme know what you're offering for it-I got a bidding war going among Scott, sillyman and some other moron.
Hey, Scott the Snot, maybe when you master apostrophes, you can move on to colons; however, you will need to achieve a decent score on the semicolon test first.
Oh, and Snott? It's "fervent", honey.
Talk about a bonehead.....!!! you haven't a clue....ROFLAMOOOOOOOOOOO
Honey, you're not even close to being rational.
Give it up, Tom. You seem to have placed the bulk of the messages on this blog, yet you have the audacity to insinuate that others have no lives, simply because they followed one thread? Tell me another good one.
So, Jeffy, got any proof that cleanses are good for people? Provide it, and hurry up about it.
wasn't one of matt damon's rules in good will hunting "don't do that". sounds like a reasonable idea in this case.
Having a tube shoved up yer bum and a warm liquid pumped in sounds more like a prison ritual than a medical treatment...
The AMA's grand solution for colon cancer is detection and surgery, which maximizes profits, not prevention. Since prevention has been left to the patient, it is disingenuous for the AMA to claim that there is no evidence when they have not done appropriate clinical trials themselves and have essentially abdicated the responsibility of prevention.
colonoscopy is prevention. We try to get precancerous lesions and remove them endoscopically, then monitor for recurrance. The rates of colorectal cancer have dropped dramatically since we started doing screening colonoscopies. If you are still concerned feel free to try an Eastern diet that is low in meat and high on vegetable matter.
That's nonsense. Doctors *constantly* urge their patients to eat healthier diets, full of fiber and other nutritious things. Where do you think that information comes from, anyway? If people would actually listen to doctors, they wouldn't think they needed this glorified enema.
AMEN AMEN A;MEN.......I BEAT FIVE CaNCES.....2 LUNG, 1 BREAST aND 2 PAROTID USING ONLY ALTERNATIVES AND MODALITIES.....I'M ALIVE .....I CAN SPEAK TO THIS AS I WAS AN ONCOLOGY NURSE AND DID RESEARCH ON THE TOXIC CHEMO DRUGS THEY USE TODaY....I SAID 40 YEARS AGO I WOULD NOT PUT THIS CRAP IN MY BODY AND I DIDN'T... THANK YOU DEAR GOD FOR OPENING MY EYES WIDE OPEN.....
I LIVE IN A STATE (AZ) THAT IS THE MECCA OF ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE....WHAaAAAA WHOOOOOO
@ actual GI doc - A colonoscopy is diagnosis, not prevention.
I'm sure a real GI doctor knows what he/she is talking about. It is prevention if it uncovers polyps that can be removed before they become cancerous.
Tomorrow I will complete my colon cleanse from Blessed Herb. The proof is in what comes out of you. It was an 8 day program and will do again twice a year.
What is sad is the continued misinformation put to the public by the AMA and their bed partners – they have lost all credibility when they say cancer has NOT been cured when it has many times over – BUT the power that control the system don't want a cure – too much money to be made by the Multi-nationals – Dr Bresinski is a perfect example of this corrupt system – The media will continue to put out misinformation so long as the readers do NOT educate themselves to the facts – NOT CNN facts as they are controlled by - their ad buyers – its a business and their clients want media – thanks Dr B Dorhan – retired
You're off your rocker.
THANK YOU DOCTOR......THE AMA,, FDA, AND THE REST OF THE IDIOTS JUST KEEP FOLLOWING THE MONEY....There aare way to many Western medicine TROLLS on this list.....ROFL....shaking my head.....
I thought I heard something rattle....
"there still remains no SOLID evidence these products do what they claim"
That quote cracked me up 🙂
Sorry my dear....you are dead wrong....i'm walking proof....stop being a sheep and do you own research....BTW I don't need no scientific proof that what I hve done and continue to do, to tell me my choices were THE RIGHT ONES...
Oh, please, don't make me laugh, you troll.
These products and enemas also remove much of the vital bacteria that your colon and intestines require to break down the matter as it moves through out your system. It takes time for these bacteria's to replenish, and if someone does this regularly could end up with very serious health problems.
You're a doctor and you use the word "bacteria's"??
Hey, it works for Scottie. He used the word "doctor's" when he simply meant more than one doctor.
I have no idea who Scottie is, but the idea that a doctor would write "bacteria's" (unless in the context of belonging to bacteria) to describe what should have been simply "bacteria" is rather amusing.
NOT TRUE.....SO SOME RESEARCH ON "REFLORISTATION" EVERY COLONICS I DO I GET A REFLORISTATION DONE... YOU NEED TO DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE EMBARASSING COMMENTS.....
I would like the morons who advocate the use of these procedures to list the "toxins" they keep yapping about. When are you morons going to do that?
BECaUSE you can't educAte STUPID....
That's why I don't try. I never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes my time and annoys the pig.
Oink away, Linda.
I'm not sure what toxins they're talking about, but it doesn't really matter. Of *course* the colon contains toxins. That's its *job* - flushing waste from the body.
I have to laugh at many of these comments. I'm not into these colon cleanses myself (I think it would involve too much work and be far too messy to even consider doing it), but the visceral anger and name-calling against those who choose to do it is beyond the pale. Don't you people have lives?
Sometimes people who engage in stupid activities need to be told that they're doing something stupid. This is modern-day snake oil, and the people who use it are 1. getting taken for money better spent on other things, and 2. being exposed to risk. Luckily for the people making money from it they aren't held to the same standards of evidence-based medicine that we money-hungry doctors are.
Dr. Pete, you speak the truth.
Yeah, sure, DrPete. You guys are around the pharmaceutical industry's little finger, but that's a debate for another time. Calling people names who engage in these colonics sure won't win anyone over to your side. In fact, calling names is the sure sign that your argument is very weak.
Funny seeing as how you complained that others don't "have lives", but you're busy checking to see who's replied to you. Guess it's a case of pot meeting kettle, isn't it?
Not at all, gentle moron. I happen to be relaxing this evening and doing things around the house. It would seem that YOU are monitoring this more closely than I, however.
No reply yet? I'm shocked!
Hmm. So you claim. What makes you think I'm not doing the same thing? Pot, meet kettle.
Well, the good news for the colon-cleansing quacks is that nobody who spends their hard earned money getting their "mucoid plaques" cleaned out will believe that any of this could possibly be bad, especially when that news is coming from "the establishment."
OHHHHHHHH please tell me where you practice Dr Pete, so I can warn people about you.....Soooooo it sounds as though you are a paid TROLL bye the AMA and FDA.....-))))
thank you cnn for writing a responsible piece on trendy dangerous unproven 'holistic' treatments.
yikesssssssss another TROLL
"And even though there still remains no solid evidence..." I beg to differ! Hehe...
Does CNN have to give quacks equal time in these articles?? Real scientists say colon cleansing is a crock, yet we need some boob of naturopathic medicine to give us their opinion. Do we get the holocaust deniers side on articles about the holocaust??
It's not good to do all of the time or at a spa... but there ARE situations where it is indicated. I understand and agree with the article, but some of the critics here need to lighten up as well. You'd think someone was trying to give them an enema or something!
I've NEVER been constipated. Not once. I think it's psychological. Nothing is meant to go up the butt, and washing out intestinal flora can't be good. I can't wait until all these new crop of gay people have colon cancers left and right. They'll want us all to pay for their cancer treatment.
Try eatong 3 Fiber One bars back to back. Problem solved!
WHATTTTTTTT...yes please eat the GMO, sugar filled garbage....>>
People are obsessed with colons and Kim Kardashian.
This article is CRAP. I did a colon clease 10 years ago (Arise & Shine) – not only did I lose weight (although in my case I had to gain it back), I lost 10 years off my appearance and felt younger than I had in years. It was amazing to say the least. I'm sure there's some garbage products out there, but to say colon cleansing is bad for you is really throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Anyone who knows anything about health knows that good health starts in the colon! If your colon if full of impacted feces (gross, yes), hardened mucus (which the colon naturally secretes in response to acidic foods such as meat and dairy), not to mention parasites (which most people have and don't even KNOW it), there's no way your body can absorb nutrients efficiently, pass them to the blood stream and tissues to create optimal health. So, educate yourself before you believe this garbage in the article here and/or buy bogus products.
I have educated myself. What degrees do you hold, nitwit?
YESSSSSSSSSSSS finally someone who can see through FOLLOW THE MONEY minions
Follow what money, Linda? Did you get your treatments for free?
There's a spa on the Upper East Side in NYC ("Jacques".. or something) . I was mortified: the woman doing it had a coffee maker and coffee right next to the flushing tubes and the client's bed (near the point where the material could be seen going into the the tubes from their rear) while she worked with her clients. It was so repulsive, I left.
But that's nothing compared to smething I tried to check out once: It is a so-called holistic-health place in, MA that is "famous" for making people slim in 21 days, serving both veggie drinks and pumping poop out of her "guests" all under teh same roof. Apparently, the Public Health dept said to me it has never had any problem with the fact that this operation has the same staff handling and (flushing or mixing together down the same pipe) everyone's faeces together while also being the same staff who blend the raw juices and feed it to their guests. They handle the faeces in order to show each guest what they found in it. Like I said: All under the same roof.
Sorry, I've never seen nurses or doctors in hospitals also serve food. So why would Massachussetts condone this "holistic" spa as being safe and acceptable? I remember getting an email from them. They will have a copy of their denial that there was anything of any kind of concern to them about it.
I really wish CNN do an investigation…it would make a great "revolt", LOL !
Well, this wins the prize for the most disgusting CNN story to date....
AMEN AMEN AMEN
You don't need colon cleansers when you have fruit instead. 3 apples a day will clean out your colon. Fresh vegitables and 1/2 slice of whole wheat bread with some grilled chicken. Salads including kale and colared greens, very high green. Have a 6" Subway with turkey on whole weat with all the vegies mixed in with salads during the week. Run 600 calories every 2-3 days or spin for an hour that will clean out your colon too. I lost 20 lbs in 1 month. 5' 11" weighing 185 lbs. Don't lose the muscle.
Just to add a wrinkle to the discussion: I have a medical condition that causes painful bowel obstructions (intestinal endometriosis and scar tissue from previous bowel surgery). It has landed me in the hospital twice. Guess what they did? A colonic! I was told by the nurses that moving the clots that way was less harmful than taking tons of laxatives, though I had to do that as well on a few occasions. Then, my gastroenterologist, a real, traditionally trained M.D. who is the doctor all the doctors go to when they need one (my husband's a doc, which is how I know this) suggested I try regular colon hydrotherapy so that I could keep things moving in there, making an obstruction less likely. He told me that while he believes it is not necessary for the average, healthy person, for me it could help. He also said that while it is usually not necessary, it is also not harmful in any way. He then proceeded to tell me that the "high" people talk about afterwards is nothing physiological, but rather the person's response to doing something they find pleasant. So, I found a certified person with a good reputation and a well-regarded clinic and I go twice monthly. I neither hate it nor love it. I have not been to the hospital since, which is definitely a plus. I haven't lost weight, transformed my life, or experienced euphoria. To me, it is just a medical procedure, necessary but fairly uncomfortable (a lot of cramping) and not at all fun. Oh – and my guy uses filtered water only. No crazy herbs or teas. Bottom line: Not necessary if you are healthy, but if you get off on it, enjoy!
make sure they do refloristations......go to http://www.myrealhealth.com.....here book is worth every penny....this is a PhD colonic therapists.....I have been going to her for 30 years....
Anyone with any sense would know to avoid her, then, Linda.
Want to clean your colons and everything else along the way? Epsom Salts and you can poop your way to paradise. This is what they use prior to endoscopy. If it's good enough for the poop-cam it's good enough for me.
"You shouldn't put things up there that really don't belong there." Not just good advice, but a sound mantra for living!
I just wasted some of my life continuing to read these comments only because of this Tom Tom person. I find it sad that someone's default defense tactic is to call other people names. lol I mean common, after all the 'moron' name calling he/she did I was actually relieved that he/she switched to 'nitwit' for a change in a response to an anonymous poster.
I am all for a debate and opinions from all sides, but it's a sad day, (hey look Tom Tom, I used an apostrophe correctly!!) when you base your argument on name-calling and grammar.
'Self taught' huh? Guess you needed a mother in your life to teach you etiquette. Scott was right, I hope you have a good rest of your day. 🙂
Who said anything about being "self-taught", nimrod?
If you think I owe the idiots here any polite responses, you're full of more than a colon-cleanse will fix. This isn't a tea party. If you don't like my comments, don't read them. Who's holding a gun to your head?
And I'll bet you own, run, or profit from some aspect of 'alternative' medicine, don't you?
TOM TOM IS DEFINITELY A INDUSTRY TROLL.....WHAT IS THE HOURLY RATE NOW TOM TOM???
Your caps key is stuck. Kind of like your brain...
Gosh, I'm still waiting for proof from one of these goof-balls that their colon cleanses actually do anything to improve health, and that those who administer them, manufacture them, or advertise them do so for nothing but the health and well-being of their 'patients'.
Funny how, like "Amazed", they're all outraged at anyone who ridicules them and their sycophants, but they can't come up with anything substantive to back their claims.
I don't know if a family member of yours was killed in a freak Master Cleanse accident or something, but I've come across a couple of your posts and you really need to address your anger and emotional issues instead of trying to take it out on people just expressing their opinions and own personal experiences, which you seem to be attacking for the sake and spite of it (ever occur to you that you yourself are offering your own opinion that probably nobody on this forum needs, including those that agree with you in practice?). The fact you are demeaning then demanding proof and references for people sharing their own positive experiences with colon cleanses is actually pretty hilarious (I'm actually laughing out loud). Get a girlfriend or make some friends and try to relax.
dustl, you're just another charlatan who's unable to provide any proof that colon cleanses do any good and that they are safe. Your silly attempts at psychoanalysis are beyond transparent, dear. Get a job doing something that doesn't involve trying to fool the gullible into believing that fakes like you can help them.
You're nothing more than a snake oil salesman.
Wow, you continue to amuse me with your unabashed propensity to insult. I really do hope that you aren't a disgruntled old man and that you do mature and find happiness in life. It's funny that you exclaim many of the people here to be nut jobs and mentally ill, when the sad fact is that you are the one in need of emotional help (and I say that without a trace of irony or sarcasm – which is sad actually, and not funny).
Oh, I'm sure you're an expert on mental health as well as colon cleansing and "alternative medicine", aren't you, sweetcheeks?
By the way, it's not "exclaim". It's "proclaim", and yes, I do so because it's true.
hahahah. No, in this case, it's "exclaim," as I imagine the hole formed by your gapping mouth, when open, is bigger than your head. If on the other hand you want to "proclaim" what you believe to be true, than do so respectfully, as throwing insults at people isn't going to win you any arguments, unless that's the way things are/were done in your household. LOL Keep it coming -this is fun.
BTW, I agree with you that Master Cleanses are bogus – which goes to show how big of a dick you really are. LOL!
So you can't post any proof, then? Well, what a shock. Of course you can't, because the fact is there isn't any evidence that colon cleanses are anything but a slick way for phonies like you to make a buck from idiots who are too dumb to understand high school biology.
Good job, there. Too bad you're a dishonest huckster.
Oh, and it's "gaping", nitwit.
I KNOW THEY WORK.....do your own research and try and refrain from FOLLOW THE MONEY and getting paid by industry for being a TROLL.....poor thing, you are now beginning to embarass yourself.....LOL
Provide proof, Linda. Try to do it like you're sane.
Oh yeah, thanks for the spell check. I appreciate it that you're taking the time to read my dense insults to you so carefully. LMFAO!!!!
You're quite welcome. By the way, "LOL" and "ROFL" make you look like a teenaged moron.
Maybe because I am a teenager. Funny, coming from somebody who actually acts like a 5 year old..
Hey, dustl, how are you enjoying Linda's "opinions and feelings about colon cleanses"? Getting any valuable information? Sure looks like she's one happy camper, all right. Why don't you tell her what a well-balanced individual she is?
That explains your lousy writing, anyway. Better get to bed, chuckles. You have the early shift at Mickey D's.
I'm just jealous of all the people that think the colon cleanse is necessary. Its all I can do to not crap my pants every day.... I think my colon is fine, its my undies that need the cleanse.
All of these people who scream "big pharma" are simony delusional. In my entire medicine career, every physician I have encountered gives generic drugs whenever possible. If these morons think we get anything besides occasional, lunch, pens, and pads, they are living in another world. These doubters simply cannot comprehend science at the MD and PhD level.
I'm not an MD, and I don't work in pharma, but I agree with you. The internet has led to many good things, but it has also resulted in a slew of conspiracy theories that are so ridiculous it's hard to imagine that people fall for them. But they do, and the proof is on these boards every day.
LOL! Based on your irrational raving and rantings up and down these comment boards, I would have assumed you were a disgraced doctor with some axe to grind (or most likely you're just going through some personal issues at the moments which doesn't justify your unprovoked aggression – but it is understandable).
I can't help imagine if you exert and carry yourself in interacting with real-life people (if you even have real-life relationships) like you do to the folks on this board (but maybe that explains, based on your posts, why you've spent your entire miserable day on this page). Out of curiosity, how old are you? That was a rhetorical question – I don't really care.
Gee, dustl, are you hitting on me? Why are you here? Don't you have a life?
dustl, if you can provide proof or credible evidence that your business in cleansing colons is helpful, why don't you do so?
Or are you just here for the sh8ts and giggles?
I'm here because I'm interested in the article and interested in people's personal experiences and opinions. Unfortunately, as I scroll through the comment pages, and I (and many of us) can't help notice your ill-wil and unprovoked aggression. I have no interest in convincing you of my opinion because your opinion of me doesn't matter to me because I don't care about you as a person (although I do feel the need to call you out). Maybe you need to get it into your thick skull that your opinion doesn't matter to anyone given your verbal diatribes. Insults are the last resort of an individual with either no real argument or real character.
Gee, dustl, why is it you haven't been able to refute anything I've posted? Do you have any scientific proof that the people here who claim colonics "work" are right? Any studies you can cite?
When are you going to get to that? I'm sure you must have lots of scientific proof right at your fingertips, don't you?
This isn't about personal experiences and opinions, dustl. This is about medical facts and studies. Where are yours? You don't have any, do you?
IOOOPPPPSSSSSSS there you have it folks...."in my entire medical career" LQQking...please let me know where you practice....you are too scary.....
LMFAO!!!! Did it occur to you we are communicating in the comments section of a CNN article!!! I didn't realize all comments required citations and a degree in medicine!
"Gee, dustl, why is it you haven't been able to refute anything I've posted?"
As I said before, why should I care what someone like you thinks – it would be a waste of time! As it is, I'm just having too much fun with your irrationality which continues to amaze. That said, as I mentioned above, I actually agree with you that Master Cleanses are bogus – I'm simply calling you out on that fact you've spent all day on this page acting like a pr**k. And guess what, after all your effort and energy in expelling your aggression, and no one is none the wiser (sigh, al that wasted energy). Maybe if you were more pleasant, people would be willing to give in to your demands for "proof," and "scientific data" in telling of their own personal experiences! This idea of being pleasant also extends to real life, in case you were wondering why no one returns your calls.
Projecting again, dunstl? Really, you think I've been here all day? How is you would know whether I have been or not? Why don't you explain how you have come to that conclusion?
Here's a little hint, dunstl: If you're commenting about the frequency of anyone else's posts, it means you've taken the time and made the effort to read every one of them and note the time.
Does "anal retentive" have a hyphen?
I'm not interested in anyone's "personal experiences", you twit. By the way, nice try posting under more than one screen name, "Amazed".
I'm interested in sensible, medically accurate information. Not anecdotes presented as scientific proof. If you want to read about personal experiences, go right ahead. Who's stopping you?
Or are you having a problem with ADHD and find my posts distracting? Poor baby.
Well, corresponding with a dim little teenybopper has had the desired effect: I'm finally sleepy enough to go to bed. Thanks for boring the p8ss out of me, dunstl! Nighty-night, little dweeb.
"How is you would know whether I have been or not? Why don't you explain how you have come to that conclusion?"
-Because as I've stated, I'm interested in the article and curious to people's own personal opinions and experiences. As I've scrolled down through 3 or 4 of the comments pages, your screen name TOM TOM and posts were continually catching my eye due to your rabid barking which is hard to miss and I though I'd be fun to call you out on your d**che-ness. FYI, your comments stae the time it was posted so you've obviously been here all day!
"Does "anal retentive" have a hyphen?"
For somebody who feels the need to spell and grammar check aynonymous posts on a forum page, I'd assume you'd know the answer! If you really need to know if there is a hyphen, just look at your driver's lisense.
"I'm not interested in anyone's "personal experiences", you twit."
Then why are you patronizing a comments board to a cnn article!!!!!!!!! This is probably the funniest thing you've actually said.
"By the way, nice try posting under more than one screen name, "Amazed". "
Sorry I don't know who that is, but it's clear you're not making too many friends here.
"I'm finally sleepy enough to go to bed. "
Oh, I was just starting to have fun.
Wow. So dustl likes reading about colon cleansing even though he/she has no interest in the practice? Someone has a fixation.
dunstl, thanks for proving my point. You were so anal retentive that you actually checked the times of my posts and concluded that I had been here all day.
The usual bashing of orthodox medicine and big pharma of alternative treatments. Anything not done properly will lead to adverse effects, whether it be by orthodox or alternative medicine approaches. But I am sure a high percentage of medicos from the orthodox establishment indulge in alternative medicine on the sly.
^5....you are 1000% right....there are thousands perhaps more who are practicing outside of the box, as they take their oath "do no harm" seriously.....
The issue isn't with "alternative medicine". It's with quack treatments. Plenty of doctors (real, actual doctors) prescribe alternatives to drugs - particularly for bowel problems. What legitimate doctors *don't* do is fill patients' heads with nonsense about their colons being ticking time bombs that need to be flushed out completely immediately. And legitimate doctors *don't* pretend that every last bit of feces has to leave your intestinal tract every time you defecate. It's *charlatans* that do that, to make money off of people.
Unless you've got a medical problem, your body knows when it's time to take a dump, and it'll tell you. If you *do* have a problem, then you can have enemas or laxatives, or just more fiber in your diet, depending on the problem. But colonics are just a trick to get people who don't know any better to pay a premium price for an enema. That's all they are. Do a little research. They're not a new idea. They're just the same old 19th century idea dressed up in new hippie BS.
It seems everyone is blaming everyone else......The Food industry..blames the Govt...the Govt. blames the Chemical industry...the Chemist...blames the Medical..and so on and so on.....In This day and Age..one must really question WHAT IS HEALTHY? considering just about everything we ingest has some form of chemical added to either enhance it's taste..growth and/or preserve it's life cycle. So, to argue about cleansing one's body "AFTER THE FACT"..is rather pointless...I would think that Not ingesting these so called harmful toxins would be the 1st line of defense don't you?...Yes, I know we all must eat something..but show me something that is 100% free of any germs, chemicals and/or whatever..I will show you NOTHING...for that is the only thing in this world that is free of everything......So, everyone...be wise about what you eat as well as how much you eat of everything and there is FAR MORE TO ONE BEING HEALTHY..THEN HAVING YOUR REAR END CLEANED OUT!!!.....Also, to me the Doctors are just as worse...wanting to FEED PEOPLE PILLS to get kick backs from the Pharm. companies....Hey Doc...when and what was the last thing you actually cured....???? don't know..but I bet you have plenty of records on TREATMENTS ($$$,$$$,$$$,$$$,$$$ industry) Don't you?...so the bottom line everyone is as long as you are sick they have a job..as long as they treat and not cure you..they have a job...and the sad thing about ALL OF THIS IS.....NO MATTER WHAT...WE ALL WILL DIE!....So, Enjoy your LIVES THE BEST YOU CAN & STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE SMALL STUFF. Be blessed and have a great life!!!!
