Colon cleansing: Not so healthy, analysis says

It has been touted as a natural way to improve your heath and cleanse the soul. But doctors are now finding the procedure known as colon cleansing can cause dangerous side effects.

Colon cleansing, technically known as colonic hydrotherapy or colonic irrigation, is a popular treatment, usually performed at spas. It often involves the use of chemicals in the body and in hydrotherapy, the colon is flushed with water through a tube inserted in the rectum.

But oral home remedies are also available and have become popular, especially over the Internet. Now researchers from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. say there's no evidence any of these colon cleansing treatments work and, in fact, when used improperly can cause cramping, kidney failure and in some extreme cases, death.

"There can be serious consequences for those who engage in colon cleansing whether they have the procedure done at a spa or perform it at home," says the lead author, Dr. Ranit Mishori, a family medicine physician at Georgetown University School of Medicine. "Colon cleansing products in the form of laxatives, teas, powders and capsules... tout benefits that don't exist."

Mayo doctor is no fan of cleanses

Although colon cleansing has been around for centuries as a way to rid the body of unwanted toxins, the American Medical Association determined in the early 1900s that the procedure was invalid; there was no evidence to show the methods worked. And even though there still remains no solid evidence these products do what they claim, colon cleansing has been making a comeback, mainly because manufacturers claim it also helps people lose weight.

"If this method were the key to weight loss, it would be amazing. But there is no evidence that this helps people lose weight,” says Mishori. "Manufacturers don't describe how it works. The statements are a little empty. They say it will enhance your immune system, up your metabolism, give you energy. It’s all pretty vague. Some people swear by it, but it could be a placebo effect. And companies can make these claims, because the federal government doesn't regulate their products."

Not expecting miracles, but I love my cleanses

According to the report released this week in the Journal of Family Practice, Mishori and her colleagues examined 20 studies published in medical literature over the last 10 years.

Investigators noted while these reports showed little evidence of colon cleansing benefits, there were a number of side effects reported following the use of these cleansing methods. Those effects included cramping, bloating, nausea, vomiting, electrolyte imbalance and renal failure. And in some cases, ingredients in these remedies were toxic.

"Some herbal preparations have also been associated with aplastic anemia and liver toxicity," Mishori said.

Researchers also noted that many of the "spas" that offer colon cleansing have no trained clinicians and even organizations such as the National Board for Colon Hydrotherapy and others who promote colon cleansing require technicians who perform professional colon cleansing to have little more than a high school diploma.

"When you flush your colon out with a hose, it's like giving yourself an enema on steroids. You shouldn't put things up there that really don't belong there," stressed Mishori. "Imagine 60 liters of water going through your colon. The stress it puts on the system, and the hose, if not used correctly, could puncture the organ."

As for the home remedies, Mishori says there's no need for them. "We poop and pee for a reason. If you are a healthy person, the body does it for you."

When asked what was the best way to cleanse the body, Mishori was quick to respond.

"Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly," she stressed, "Get six to eight hours of sleep and see a doctor regularly. But no one wants to do that," she said with exasperation. "But they'll use a hose to flush themselves out! The use of these methods are unhealthy. And what's scary is we only examined the cases that were reported to hospitals and doctors. Imagine all the people who are using these products and methods and have side effects and never go to the hospital. We don't know about them. The numbers could be staggering."

medical procedures (yeah, i'd consider inserting something in your bum medical...) that make their way to (or start from) infomercials should be immediately considered questionable, at best, dangerous at par.

but, obviously, we missed something during our evolutionary process where the butt sprayer tube hasn't been "discovered" until now, and so this has been fixed by people who want to sell something.

They have no problem prescribing a ton of pills though... basically this is to scare people into taking drugs instead of doing a 1 time colon cleanse which CAN rid the body of toxins. There will always be those that missuse this as there are those that missuse prescription drugs, which by the way, if you overdose on those, what is the emergency medical procedure to save your life?? that's right, they flush you out... People please do NOT believe everything that is out there, we now KNOW that the American Medical Association is funded 100% by the pharmaceutical companies... they just love when people eat this stuff up, its their job to publish things like this, to keep the cattle under control.

What are "toxins" even? It should be easy to prove if it's flushing them out of the body by analyzing what comes out.

Human as You: You are probably beyond help, but here goes. The colon does not sequester toxins, period. Flushing it with water does at best nothing, and could in fact be detrimental. To anyone with an education in science, this whole topic is so remedial as to barely warrant discussion. Anyone with a basic education in biology is laughing their heads off reading yours and similar comments. I feel sorry for you that you live a life without apparently bothering to become educated on some of the basics of life on earth.

Do you think for a second big Pharma wouldn't jump all over the colon B.S. and made it profit, if it actually worked? You herbalist nutters are always barking about how greedy they are but in doing so prove your herbalist pills and extracts don't do much because big Pharma would snap it up in a second and try make big bucks if in fact it did work.

@speedro: You probably haven't noticed that the typical american's diet is full of toxins that weren't around for the majority of human existence. Also, you are probably unaware of the fact that chemicals CAN be absorbed in the colon, that's why many drugs are administered rectally!

      @Human as you can

You've really no idea what you're talking about.

Doctors do not perscribe a ton of pills for colon cleansing. Freaking period. Prior to a colonoscopy, they perscribe a one time oral treatment–a laxative.

There is no way in the world that the doctor behind this research is getting any single thing out of a pharma-company for her conclusions that colon-cleansers amount, actually, to nothing more than snake-oil. The fact is, snake-oil salesmen–in all different forms–have been around forever; they exist ad infinitum still today. Medicine, on the other hand, has been in a recent trend of non-invasive methods–where possible–an non-pharama solutions where-ever natural items will do the trick.

To wit: "Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly," she stressed, "Get six to eight hours of sleep and see a doctor regularly. But no one wants to do that," she said with exasperation. "But they'll use a hose to flush themselves out!"

Wow! Thank you, I truly appreciate to be able to comment on this topic and to read all the points of view (which I respect every single one).
speedro – Thank you for your comment. Bill Gates will tell you, one thing is what they teach you in a university and another is what happens in real life. The TRUTH which can be researched very easily is; If you were to overdose tomorrow on most any kind of drug the first thing they will do is flush you out via Buttom hole. So.... just ask yourself, why? certain individuals can benefit from this. Some of the basics of life on Earth did not include putting chemical drugs into your body, this is new and in many cases we are finding we are doing more damage than anything we are fixing, and we now have the interest of the corporations to make sure that you take as many of their products as they can possibly put into you without killing you. I'll do my 1 enema a year, you take the drugs.... c u in 20 years and we will see who is doing better. THAT IS REAL LIFE and not taught at any university. PEACE
Rescme – No, I do not believe they would because these things are too easy for anyone to do on their own, that is WHY they push their man made stuff to be better than nature... is it really that difficult to see that ?? seems so obvious. You obviously believe extracts don't do much, that is because you believe these articles which are written by Drs that have a direct economic benefit from writing them... and for your detriment they don't care much for you except to make sure YOU continue to believe that MAN has bettered Nature in curing us. The fact is and you can research this... in the 50's all hospitals had enemas for patients but because it worked so well (and how do you make money from something you can so easily without the need of any man made chemicl?) it was lobbied out of hospitals by politicians so that drugs could then be applied instead. How many vaccinations do you receive now days? just 30 minutes from being born you are given like 4 BY LAW, including Polio which is almost eradicated... WHY?? come on do not be SO gullible.
ChemPhd – can you be more specific to what you are referring to?

Humanasyou: you've drawn a parallel a few times now between enemas and people getting their stomachs pumped after overdosing, but these are not the same thing. The difference is that in the case of an OD, the point is to get the drug or whatever poisoinous substance out of the person's stomach before it is absorbed into the bloodstream. Cleaning out the colon doesn't do this at all–it simply cleans feces (which is the undigestable, mostly fibrous, remains of food) out of the colon. At this point in the digestion process, most compounds that can be absorbed by the gut have already been absorbed–the colon is just squeezing out and absorbing the last bits of water that it can. Sure, there might be some traces of other compounds in the water, but those are mainly absorbed in the stomach and small intestine. See the difference?

And why wouldn't the pharmaceutical companies be willing to sell cleanse products if they worked at all and were safe? They make a lot of money on products that are very cheap to produce, such as cold medication and pain killers. They could just as easily be selling cleansing products.

Dear Jon, Thank you for your comment, I see a lot of people always arguing the point of "if it works so well why do Phamaceutical companies not just buy them up?". It works so well that pharmaceutical companies have a LOT of people working to convince YOU that these things do not work... did you ever think about that? do you really believe that the multi-billion dollar phamaceutical corporation driven by profits has YOU in their best interes? they do BUT only so that you believe these type of articles which are witten directly by a Dr that has a direct financial beneft from it being published. Did you know for example that natural peppermint can stop a headache almost instantly by applying a bit of peppermint oil to your temples? but all this stuff is naturally made... can't be patented, therefore can't be made to profit one indivual corporation... and that goes for everything else.. the key is in that the natural stuff CAN NOT be patented. THAT IS WHY, so to summarize. IF IT IS FOR FINANCIAL GAIN THEY WILL TELL YOU ANYTHING YOU WANT TO HEAR SO THAT YOU BUY THEIR PRODUCTS. Pretty clear.. no? PEACE brothaaaa.... be skeptic but learn to listen.

Never question your doctor. He knows more than you. Never check your phone bill for mistakes. Phone companies have the highest integrity of any utility. If your doctor sends you in for MRI for a chest cold, by all means, you should go, even if your insurance won't pay the five thousand dollars. This "study" is totally bogus. There is a huge difference between hydrothreapy and chemically induced colon cleaning. The lymph system drains into the colon, so colonics clean the whole body. I have gotten colonics yearly for 30 years, and at age 58, I am still playing basketball with teenagers. Colonics work wonders.

The funny thing is that people like Chris actually believe the anatomical fallacies that people tell them – like that the lymphatic system drains into the colon. It doesn't. It would be counter to what the colon does – which is reabsorb water from waste to return it to the body. That's all the colon is – a big water collector.

Exercise and eating healthy are 99% of the answer to most of Americans that are fat and lifeless.... I bet if you stopped cleansing all together, you'd still be playing basketball with teenagers until the arthritis kicks in...

      1. Even if the lymphatic system did 'drain' to the colon, which it does not, how could you possibly rationalize to yourself that flushing water into your colon could somehow have an effect on a complex biochemical network (the 'entire body') that operates far upstream from the colon? 2. Your anecdotal evidence with N=1, and your incorrectly argued correlation that since you get colonics and you are healthy therefore colonics keep you healty has no substance. You sir, are a fool.

Check your facts, lymphatics don't drain into the colon. Lymphatics drain to the bloodstream. The colon drains to the liver which cleanses all the nasty things you eat, but "cleansing" your colon with irrigation does literally nothing to affect your health at the risk of rupturing it. BTW, a ruptured colon kills you.

Studies have shown that people that eat meat have about 5lbs of undigested meat in their colon and research shows that disease can start from the colon. So why isn't colon cleansing good? Could it be that people that do it, cleanse their body and instead of eating better, they simple go back to their old diet? Or the disease, toxins etc are free to move to the surface and they finally feel the effects of their long term bad eating habits ?

Please give an actual citation of the study – not just "studies say" – because the 5-10-20 lbs of material in the colon of meat-eaters is a bogus claim and I have no doubt that you cannot back this statement with a real actual scientific study.

Ad for colon cleansing, Your colon is meant to operate in one direction – repeatedly forcing fluids and chemicals in the OPPOSITE direction is NOT physiologic and can lead to many issues. Eating a variety of foods and sufficient fiber and fluids will maintain colon health. Paying someone to hose stuff up your butt is an invitation to too many problems to list here.

What you are arguing is that this design – enhanced by natural selection over millions of years – can't do the basic process of eliminating waste? That's just not logical. Not at all.

Here's a pretty reliable study about why eating meat ISN'T so good:

"Limit red meat—and avoid processed meat. Research suggests that people who eat more than 18 ounces a week of red meat have a higher risk of colon cancer. So make red meat—beef, pork, lamb—only an occasional part of your diet, if you eat it at all. And skip the processed stuff—bacon, hot dogs, and deli meats—since that's also been linked to higher cancer risk. Try these healthy protein recipes for nuts and tofu, fish and chicken." This whole 5# of undigested meat thing is comical. If all meat eaters are walking around with this, I can assume that our colons are kicking out some form of chemical to keep it from rotting. As said before, if this is happening you will have more issues than just carrying around a few more pounds. I'm pretty sure if this was the case you would die rather rapidly.

The colon is DESIGNED and refined over millions of years of evolution and across the animal kingdom. Your colon represents the state of the art in waste elimination. That is its whole purpose. There is not meat bound up in anyone's colon, flushing yours with water in the wrong direction is likely causing you harm. Get educated for real.

There is no reason at all to be rude or make assumptions. I rarely watch TV and I have never watched an infomertial. I have some vitamins for when I don't eat balanced meals in a day.
If you read what I wrote, I shared my personal experience. Am I so energetic and healthy and never get sick because I have occasional colonics? I don't know, but It makes sense to me and given that I feel incredible after one and that "healthy high" lasts for days, I believe it is a good thing for me to coninue and I am confident to recommend it for improved health.
Someone mentioned the horrible liquid they make you drink before a colonic....
My father who is ill and in a nursing home refuses to have another colonoscopy because of the horrible experience he had with that liquid they recommend you start the evening before your procedure. For some people that means litterally sitting on the lu for 12 hours of agony and severe cramping. As opposed to an hour with a colon therapist? no brainer!

98% of colon cancers above the anal verge are adcrecanoinomas and although they do vary in aggressiveness it is not drastic. There are other rare types that are much more aggressive. Survival rates are dependent on stage. Stage 4 colon cancer has a 5-year survival rate of 5%. There are those that survive past 5 years and of the other 95% there are those who survive 1 week and others survive 4 years and 11 months. It is difficult to apply these rates to an individual without a good understanding of the disease process and even then it is just one piece of the puzzle.

If you eat pork or beef roast and potatoes your feces are likely to be firm and difficult to excrete. You can take a garden hose with a nozzle on it, turn the water on low, and gently fill up the rectum until you can't take any more. Then all the feces in the colon will be washed out and you will feel much better. If you eat food like beans and get liquidy stools, then you can also use the garden hose to gently remove leftover solid particles from the colon. You don't have to be a doctor to know this, just be intelligent.

Colon cleansing makes me laugh, but then again I forget how many people have no education in biology. News flash: Your colon does not contain any 'toxins' or residual anything. Millions of years of evolution have refined its function to be excellent at elimination of everything within it. This is the case across the animal kingdom. Of all parts of your body you may want to look for sequestered toxins, the colon would be least likely place to find anything. Try your fat tissues or liver. People will believe all kinds of BS I guess..

The reason drug companies don't promote colonic cleansers is that they are regulated by scientists at the FDA. They have to prove their products work before they can market them. Since they know these things don't work, they leave them alone. And because they spend so much money proving their products work, they may get annoyed when people get rich promoting garbage as medicine. But these physicians (I'm one of them) aren't making any more money by taking the time to straighten people out on the bogus claims of colonic cleansers. It's just that there's only so much BS we can take before we explode.

Look it up, many people have parasites and other caked up stuff in their colon that can be the source of all sorts of problems. I used a colon cleanse before and I was suprised at the junk I passed. There are no plaques or anything else built up in the colon. There are smooth walls, with feces inside. How do I know this? I teach human anatomy to medical students, and have seen many dissected cadavers. As for the things you see that get flushed out when you do a colon cleanse–how do you know those aren't just byproducts of the pills/drinks you're taking as part of that clease? I find it ironic that so many people won't trust medicine and doctors because "they're profiting from big pharma", when all the "natural" supplements these same people take are allowing someone else to profit. And guess what–when some naturopath sells you something, no one else tests their claims. I'm not claiming science-based medicine is perfect, but at least there's some rules and regulations in place to keep someone from making unvalidated claims, then selling snakeoil to anyone who will believe them.

A totally 'unbalanced' article. Half truths!! There is value in 'colon cleansing'....all health and disease comes from 'the gut'...I'm sure med schools do not teach this...If you do not take charge of the care of your body...then you will run to the nearest doctor when anything goes wrong. Not unlike people buying cars and not taking care of them and then waking up and finding the car is falling a part and running to the nearest mechanic.
Too many people see their bodies in the same light and see their doctors as 'body mechanics'....you can usually get a 'new car' but the body is with you until you 'check out'. The body has a spiritual side which is ignored most of the time.

If the colon needs no help eliminating, then why are people made to drink a liquid prep and take certain pills before a colonoscopy? Why not just tell the patient to only drink water for the required number of hours? I understand as well as anyone that the colon's job is to eliminate, but that not not mean that everyone's does a perfect job. My mom's was "redundant," which means that it was longer and curved like several S's overlapped. I should think it would have been harder for her to get everything through her system because of that. All that said, I do think that for most people drinking adequate water and eating adequate fiber through veggies and fruit will go a long way to getting them regular and making them feel less bloated etc.

Are you REALLY trying to equate colon cleansing with the procedure required for a colonoscopy? Jesus H. Christ. Why do you think doctors need to have patients clear the colon for a procedure that's normally done only once in a decade? Because they think there are toxins in there? Because they don't like feces? It's because they need to be able to see the colon without any matter in the way! It's not because fecal matter is 'toxic' or harmful to the body–the colon cleans itself and needs no help from us.

      August 1, 2011 at 15:00 | Report abuse |

The reason for the prep and the pills is mainly for the benefit of the doctor performing the endoscopy so he can see what he's doing. It has nothing to do with the colon "needing help".

Well this only talks about the American Medical Association. How about internationally? Colon cleansing (with just herbs) has been done for many many years in many Asian cultures. There are many teas, such as chrysanthemum is known in the Chinese community for flushing out toxins. It'll be hard to find a Chinese Doctor in Asia who would dispute that.

So what? They also pour pee in a cup and whip it with a whisk, then sniff it.

And they don't do it for free, either.

TCM has thousands of years under its belt, so please tell me what the average lifespan is for someone using TCM only. Has is actually reached 50 yet, or is it still about 40? Are there hundreds of millions of extraordinarily healthy asian men and women in their 90s because of TCM or not? "Traditional chinese medicine" is just another placebo. There is no such thing as "western medicine." There is only evidence-based medicine, and all of the protestations of "it's old so it must work" are vacuous and intentionally deceptive.

Richk – Are you aware that the average life span has increased significantly in the last 100 years due to better medical care, vaccines, and improved nutrition.

"Better Nutrition" is very subjective. Most doctors don't know sh1t about nutrition. The popular media often imply that increases in life expectancy are due to the wonders of modern medicine. This is false. Increases in life expectancy are due almost entirely to a decrease in the infant mortality rate.

The AMA has proven itself as a biased opinion-for-a-fee organization with little credibility. Any recommendation by them can be assumed to have been paid for by a related physician specialty. For example if colorectal surgeons found that colon hydrotherapy reduced office visits, then they ask the AMA to offer advice that directs patients back to the doctor.

So did belief in flat earth and mythological gods like Zeus (and current religions as well).
Belief for long periods, or by large numbers of people, means nothing inherently.

Only scientific proof really means anything.

Every thing in moderation, if you need one then I guess you should get one. If you have a problem before hand you should have it checked by a Dr. Then its up to you to do the research and make an informed decision on your treatment.Dr.s are not gods and many (not all) are paid to push pill either by incentives or by financial need. I found out that my DR was paid 35,000.00 to talk about the medicine that he prescribed for me. It has many side effect one of them is death! So educate your self work with your Dr. and never forget He is getting paid by you.

wow what do you have against traditional chinese medicine? Just because you don't know, it doesn't mean it doesn't work. It's not "scientific" in the US because no one will sponsor these tests. And when they do, they're biased to prove that it's not scientific. TCM is mainstream whether you like it or not. Acupuncture is used in many American hospitals and is covered by many health insurance, including for things like post cancer treatment. Basic acupuncture is also taught in many medical schools.

Quackery at it's finest! Eat right, exercise, reduce your stress, don't be a fatty like most Americans and you'll be in good shape. Colon cleansing is great for the owners of the businesses offering them and the products they use but a complete waste of money for the consumer. EVIDENCE based medicine is what we should be following. If your fat and want to lose weight colon cleansing is not the answer. Big Macs, sedentary lifestyles and poor food choices are the issue that needs to be fixed.

BTW, if TCM is really snake oil or the hundreds of years under its belt mean nothing, it would have been long gone with all the new medical technologies of today. It's still around because it works.

How much clearer does it need to be? Go back hundreds of years. The average lifespan was far less. Now, people are living much longer due to medical science. Medical science is not a conspiracy to keep people sick. Have you ever been to a hospital? Please, break your leg and as the doctor is fixing it, then you can think about if the medical establishment is a giant conspiracy to keep you ill. For gods sake, wake up. Its these Natural doctors who are the crooks. they are the ones who want to sell products that haven't been tested or verified to be safe.

@richk, Please don't take offence, but do you happen to be an evangelical conservative Christian Republican? I see this sort of language used by that group of people more often lately. A quick adoption of anything that would cast doubt on expert scientists in any field, especially when they're consulted by "the media". While physicians may have much to learn about nutrition, modern science has certainly contributed to extending life beyond the birthing process. How could you possibly deny this? I know you do, so I'm setting you up to provide a stat for your wild claim below. You know, while a certain amount of vigilance over one's medical situation is prudent, a mistrust of the medical community has led to so much confusion for no good reason at all.

How's the Chinese health care system? Last I checked it was the orthodox medical practices of the United States that have made this country the outright leader in medicine worldwide.

You said, "It's not "scientific" in the US because no one will sponsor these tests. And when they do, they're biased to prove that it's not scientific."

Ah, but that's the beauty of the true and rigorous scientific method as performed by highly trained individuals. Scientists are naturally sceptical and trained to poke holes in hypotheses and conclusions. But, if the experiment can be conducted and repeated with the same results to prove the opposite of the inefficacy of TCM, then scientists, regardless of origin, might begin to place credence in some of these methods. As in the judiciary, an individual is assumed innocent unless proven otherwise. Likewise, a hypothesis is assumed NOT true unless proven otherwise. So far, most if not all TCM has not surpassed that hurdle. It is this hurdle that has allowed us all of what modern science has given us today.

People are living longer lifespans right now because of inoculations and basic diseases like small pox have virtually been wiped out. It has nothing to do with cleaner colons or Chinese medicine. There are things about Chinese medicine that are beneficial but that doesn't mean everything about it is gospel and that's what people don't understand. Real western medicine hasn't been around that long and it's still advancing. The breakthroughs from it however (inoculation, penicillin, etc.) have been unbelievably beneficial to the world. If traditional Chinese medicine is such a cure all how come it never figured out something as basic as penicillin?

Was at a woman's house the other day, she smoked like a chimney but had an "ionizer" that she said "ionized" the air to remove impurities....I failed to point out the obvious as...well it was obvious. The best line in the whole article "Get six to eight hours of sleep and see a doctor regularly. But no one wants to do that," she said with exasperation. "But they'll use a hose to flush themselves out!" sadly to true.

How many of you talking crap about TCM have tried to use it? Have you studied it? Do you even know what is TCM? Do you know that TCM considers food as medicinal? yes you know the vitamins and minerals in food actually can help with the body! Do you know how acupuncture works? Ever heard of pressure points? Is that snake oil? Ya like if you can't sleep, massaging the back of the neck helps because it relieves the fight or flight pressure point. Oh and about herbs, you know what is in a lot of herbs? A concentrated dose of nutrition for specific ailments. For example, Angelica roots is known in the TCM for helping blood circulation. Know what can be found in angelica roots, vitamins that help with improving blood circulation like vitamin B. potassium, magnesium, iron, etc. Just because the treatments are done through pressure point and FOOD (not drugs!), it doesn't make it useless.

Hey speedro –please explain constipation if the colon is designed to eliminate all foods including pork, red meats, ect...? I mean..you seem to know it all on colon cleansing and how the FDA is right on everything. I mean, how bout Tylenol. Tylenol was allowed on the marked in the late 70's and the FDA knew about liver damage, and a recent article even mentioned that acetaminophen caused liver damaged and they just now are taking it off the market because it exists in over 200 medications.

Your post makes no coherent sense. Missing something that is dangerous and finding something that is dangerous are literally polar opposites. By your logic, you would also discount the FDA's findings that acetaminophen is dangerous, because they've been wrong in the past. It's quite ironic that your tag is "Common Sense," as completely unsound logic seems to be the order of the times.
