On the Brain: When believing is healing

If you're sick, it doesn't hurt to believe that you're getting better - in fact, it may actually help. And when it comes to many alternative medicines, such as herbal remedies and acupuncture, belief alone may be the reason that you feel a sense of comfort and healing.

The Economist has an overview of the truth behind alternative medicine and the power of the placebo effect. A placebo is basically a sham medical treatment that isn't supposed to have any effect on health. But if a doctor tells you that a particular pill is going to make you feel happier, it may not matter if the pill is made of flour; your belief in it alone may heighten your emotions.

Harvard professor Irving Kirsch says the placebo effect works best on conditions that are emotional and subjective. A recent study, reported by WebMD, suggested that the placebo effect is at work in many headache treatments. But it can also change your perception of pain as well as your heartbeat, blood pressure, digestion and other factors that you don't control, according to Karin Meissner of Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany.

And it appears that more involved fake procedures are more convincing than simple ones in healing your body and mind. Studies have found that people respond better to phony injections than pills, and a convincing pretend surgery is even better. Surprisingly, you might even see improvement from a placebo even if your doctor tells you that it's not real medicine, a 2010 study in PLoS ONE found.

Rigorous analyses of scientific studies have shown that much of what is known as alternative medicine is bunk, with a few exceptions such as St. John's wort for mild depression (Here's the low-down on this and other remedies for depression from Health.com). But the simple belief in a remedy carries a lot of weight, according to experts. And when you go to a practitioner of alternative medicine, you're likely to get someone who offers you more face time and greater sense of reassurance about a therapy than a regular doctor. The positive relationship you form with him or her may have a placebo effect in itself.

This is a point emphasized recently by CNNhealth.com's own mind and body columnist Dr. Charles Raison.  He wrote that a patient's strong emotional connection to a doctor seems to be a big factor in recovery. A recent study showed this effect in depression, and suggested that the doctor-patient bond was perhaps even a more important determinant of recovery than whether the patient received a placebo or a real drug.

Interestingly, although we have all kinds of fancy names for alternative therapies that probably act as placebos, many doctors shy away from the idea of prescribing good old fashioned sugar pills. But in some places, that may be changing. Dr. Raison mentioned also that the German Medical Association started advising doctors to give out placebos, which may make sense given the benefits described here.

Of course the AMA and the Medical Community of Drs are going to say that Alternative Medicine is a sham-LOL. Can you blame them when their Mercedes-Benz lifestyles might be threatened?

But just go to any respectable Accupuncturist, Chiropractor and Natural Nutrionist and you will find thousands of people who swear by Alternative medicine which is really just NATURAL medicine which the Chinese and Indians and many other cultures have known for centuries that what comes out of the ground is what is good for the body, not chemicals and synthetics.

Drs do have their place for surgeries and certain diseases that herbs or natural treatment just doesn't act fast enough but on the whole our civilization is just polluting our bodies with chemicals for the most part when we should be using what God has already provided to us through Nature.

so chiropractors, naturopathists, accupuncturists all work for free? No, they make plenty of money (some of them even drive mercedes!). Herbals and other 'natural' homeopathics are a multi-billion dollar a year industry that has been fighting FDA regulation for years to prevent evaluation of the claims they make.

"ON MAY 29th Edzard Ernst, the world’s first professor of complementary medicine, will step down after 18 years in his post at the Peninsula Medical School, in south-west England…His findings are stark. According to his “Guide to Complementary and Alternative Medicine”, around 95% of the treatments he and his colleagues examined—in fields as diverse as acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy and reflexology—are statistically indistinguishable from placebo treatments.”

Than the above mentioned theory should work just the opposite as well. If you don't believe that alternative medicines work, than they probably won't.

Placebo's may work to some degree, and some natural therapies are good but they are not a complete replacement for medicine you get from a doctor, depening on the nature of your problem.

To say that only one method is good is highly ineffective because usually medicine works better along with a proper treatment plan, such as real counselling, a real fitness plan or a real change in diet which would require many of the professionals you are talking about.

Placebo's will probably work better through for a hypacondriac whom feels they need medication for something but don't have a real problem....

At the same time, I don't really think placebo's will be really all that good.... Someone may think they are initially getting better but your just sweeping the problem under the rug. Obviously this topic needs a great deal of discussion and this article proves that =)

I think the belief in a God is a lot harder and more bitter a pill to swallow, because people want to do what they want and are selfish and afraid of facing their consequences. It seems a lot more plausible to me that people who deny God are the ones who are afraid, unwilling to accept the truth that maybe, just maybe, there is something more powerful than them out there.

      1) "No invisible guy in the sky made me" - True. The eternal God, the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ did.
      2) "No imaginary friend will judge me after I die" - True. Your judge will be the eternal God. And if you do not embrace his Son Jesus by faith, he is most certainly not your friend. In fact, his wrath abides on you even now; see John chapter 3.

A shallow article. There is not a doubt in my mind that Mind Set is a key to healing the body. This mindset is central to many traditions. While I doubt that every item in a health food store lives up to its billing, the few that I have taken including MSM, have been very effective. As acupuncture has been utilized for thousands of years, and is considered mainstream in other countries, I find this critique just another push off of the billion dollar Alternative Healing Industry.

Most oncologists-many Ivy League educated-believe in some form of alternative medicine-depending on the condition/treatment. This article doesn't ask the right questions, and focuses on only a small sampling of researchers. Most MD's I know-and I know MANY-go to a chiropractor, see a nutritionist, take vitamins (aka supplements)-all heretical practices some 50 years ago when the AMA wouldn't accept anything out of it's narrowly prescribed regimen. Whoever wrote this article shoud be investigated-I'm assuming ties to big pharma and AMA. Pathetic journalism.

Yes Jugular, all those evolutionary biologists out there are clearly lying to you. There is a big giant conspiracy to teach you that you're descendent from single celled organisms, scientists know it's a lie and they don't care cause evolutionary biologists find their 50k a year jobs with limited recognition too precious to admit the truth. Right?

In a slightly related issue, could you please explain to me at what point was everything created? What exactly defines a 'kind'? Cause we know we have things like the Italian Wall Lizard which evolved brand new cecal valves, so clearly evolution happens after a certain point. You people generally admit this and say 'we know microevolution is real, macroevolution isn't', so step it back and tell me where the distinction is between micro and macro. Were all individual genra of Wall Lizards created separately, or did they evolve from true lizards? Just follow the evolutionary chain that you admit is real back to where you can clearly distinctly say 'everything after this evolved, but everything before this was clearly a distinct creation'.

I never seem to see creationists do that. For evolutionary biologists it's easy, cause there really is no line between 'micro' and 'macro' evolution (if you were to force a line, it'd happen at the species level which would mean the Italian Wall Lizard is really a case of macro evolution) but in truth, the line is always blurred. Creationists argue, and their argument requires, that there is a sharp distinct line, as there was a 'no evolution before this point' 'evolution after this point' in our history. Where is that?

Ugh.... So there's only ONE herbal remedy that works. And this one herbal remedy is magically different than every other plant in existence and big corporate drugs don't come from plants they're just magic and the placebo thing only affects non-corporate herbs so it magically does not also inflate prescription drug efficacy numbers.... The stupidity of smart people is astounding.

Funny thing is it is fact that many perscription drugs are created from nature and plants and then the smart scientists alter them hoping to make them work even better than they already do. Read about essiac tea – Burdock Root, Sheep Sorrel, Slippery Elm and Turkish Rhubarb. Some of these herbs are used in Chemo. Not to mention pot, all of it's known medical benefits as a pain killer and treatment for cataract...But now scientists have managed to put it in pill form. Most, if not all pharma drugs start with herbs and built from there.

How much does a patient have to pay for placebo pills? Based upon this article's rational it seems plausible that a placebo pill would be more effective if it were expensive. The patient might have the mindset that an inexpensive treatment can't possibly be as effective as an expensive treatment.

The difference between 'alternative' medicine and standard medicine is scientific evidence vs wishful thinking. Time after time after time, when properly tested, 'alternative' treatments simply FAIL TO PERFORM. Period. If you find an 'alternative' treatment that does demonstrably work, surprise, it becomes standard medicine. End of story.

Yes, believing is healing which can be termed as placebo effect. Mind is a potential healer in many psychosomatic disorders and emotional diseases. Placebo effect works at sometime at some conditions only which can not be generalized. By taking the advantage of placebo effect, this can not be generalized or attributed to any alternative medical systems or complementary medical systems. Many alternative systems works effectively on scientific principles where the chemical medicines of allopathy failed which is the truth in the world.

Alternative medicine works. I speak from my recent personal experience. I have advanced periodontal condition and most of my teeth were loose and dentists suggestion was extraction and implants. This was about a month ago. I refused to go that way and started searching for alternative medicine. After much research, found out turmeric powder mixed with mustard oil when applied on the gums can work effectively in restoring gums. Been doing that deligently and changed my diet with it. After just one month, i am seeing amazing difference. The sore and painfully receded gums is now looking pink. The teeth are getting firmer. They still shake but it is markedly improved than before. I know it. A simple act like gargling used to earlier shake them in their sockets. Now, it is much firmer. A far road still ahead from recovery, but i am assured i will make it. U mean to say it is just placebo, which killed the germs and actually is regenerating the gum tissue? Had i followed the traditional route, i will be sitting now with a mouth full of implants.

Honestly, what you said doesn't support your argument at all for alternative medicine. The idea in this article is that people heal, get better, by taking placebos because they believe it works. It has been a long-standing idea that things such as laughter, happiness, positive reinforcement, ect. may somehow help you recover from all kinds of inflictions, even to go as far as cancer. Of course this hasn't been proven, but you hear about it all the time. Some one overcoming a serious accident or illness with willpower, some one being told they're going to die but they refuse to give up and they survive. Obviously there are many more factors involved, but it's the same idea. Believing in something could be a lot more powerful than we realize. My point is, what if because you believed it would work is the reason that it did? How do you know it was really what you did, and not your belief in what you were doing? How do you REALLY know?

Interesting that NOW we canNOT afford healthcare, there is a simple way to heal ourselves from simple maladies : ) And the Doctors are the ones telling us about it? I guess theyve made enough money that they can relax and take some time off from all of us hypochondriacs and unnecessary medicines and medical blood tests and procedures.

Anyone wanting to try to heal yourself, of which I FIRMLY BELIEVE we can IF WE BELIEVE and PARICIPATE, look up the info concerning Psychoneuroimmunology. Big name for a simple procedure of healing and willing oneself or SOMEONE ELSE well.
One has to be very committed to mentally participating in this type of thought process: and yes, it will work. Commit and believe.
This has NOTHING to do with placebo.

On another note: the bible says that Jesus said of His works and healings: "all these things I have done, YOU shall do and GREATER". greater. I could name several of my own family experiences that this worked by on the internet, we have limitless skeptics : )

The mind is a powerful thing, far too many people don't use it. If fake laughing can make you healthier, it's logical that the brain can convince the body that it's healthier.

Of course, none of this has anything to do with a fictional all powerful being floating somewhere in space while his same dead human self is floating on a cloud hovering above the earth with other dead people.

some scientists believe this world is nothing but a figment of our imagination, we have mentally created matter and believe there is matter and therefore, there is matter. It's difficult to get that deep, but your point on a "fictional being" fits well into this catagory. If you believe in a God, likely when you die, you will find one, same with hell. It is our minds, it is our soul and what we believe that controls this universe, not the other way around.

Indeed, as doctors we prescribe a lot of drugs that cannot possible be proven to help... but it does. The belief in it does. And we do observe that if they are more expensive they do work better. And we are pressurized by patients to "do something" even if we know there's no real treatment for a condition or it is self limiting anyway.. so we prescribe.. the customer is always right.

Unfortunately the side effects of drugs are potent, killing thousands of people every year. These placebos, while a little less effective perhaps, at least are not as toxic as prescription drugs.

This was the trick of the Shaman in the ancient days: Fool your patient into believing they have been healed, and allow the natural processes of healing to take place. Your body built itself from scratch materials, it has everything it needs to keep itself healthy. Perhaps, much of what we call 'science' and rely on to keep us healthy may in fact be what is causing our illnesses, in both a physical and mental manner. I believe this is much in the same as to what is experienced by all faith healers as the pattern is the same. I keep these ideas close to me in hopes that they serve me well and help to keep me from becoming sick or improving my health when I am ill. Its not something you can measure, because how do you know if it helped or not? I say better to believe and try to allow yourself to heal, than to disregard this idea, and rely on pure science and medicine alone. Relying on pure science to heal is what has gotten us to the point of viral resistant antibiotics and the like.
