Inside women's sexual brains, preferences and porn

Men everywhere have probably wondered for thousands of years: What turns women on?

In the age of the Internet, it's possible to find out. And with countless genres of images, videos and erotic stories available online, women are both able and empowered to access arousing material, and figure out for themselves what they like. Some are watching porn, as our sex columnist Ian Kerner pointed out in a recent column.

But what women are viewing and reading is usually not what men are searching for, according to a new book on the subject. In "A Billion Wicked Thoughts," released Thursday, neuroscientists Ogi Ogas and Sai Gaddam combine web searches, personal search histories, websites, and classified ads with insights from brain science to discover precisely how different women are from men.

Just like we're all born with taste cues - sweet, salty, savory, spicy, bitter - men and women's brains are wired with sexual cues, Ogas said. For men, the cues are predominantly visual, and aimed at the partner; they often enjoy seeing women orgasm, which may be one of the reasons why so many women fake. But women are more complex; they place a high importance on feeling desired, for example, whereas it appears men generally don't need to feel desired at all in order to feel aroused.

"A woman wants to know that there’s going to be repeat action, that he’s committed and is going to be coming back," Ogas said.

Women are sexually complex in other important ways. If a man is physically turned on, he's also psychologically turned on, which is why medications for erectile dysfunction (i.e. Viagra) can deliver fairly straightforward results. But a woman can be physically turned on and mentally turned off at the very same time, making efforts toward a treatment for low female sexual desire all the more complicated. And as to what makes a woman go beyond mere arousal and have sex, you'll have to read this other article.

The female sexual brain is also like a “detective agency” that investigates a man’s many qualities before deciding  whether he’s worth her attention, the authors said. Evolutionarily, that makes sense. In the earliest days of humans, females who mated with the first males they encountered would not have fared as well as those who took the time to investigate their partners a little more. The "detective agency" would make sure that the chosen male would not be cruel, unfaithful or sneaky, would protect the woman and her child.

More important than evolution, though, is the "software" of the sexual brain, Ogas and Gaddam said.

Again, men are simple: The male brain is designed so that any stimulus can trigger arousal. For some, a single cue is necessary and sufficient, which is what makes a fetish, well, a fetish. For instance, some men get turned on in the presence of attractive shoes or feet, and need to see that in order to feel stimulated. On the other hand, fetishes are extremely rare among women. The female brain usually doesn't respond to a single trigger every time; there can be lots of different combinations of things that can get them in the mood.

"The male sexual brain is like a single toggle switch, whereas the female sexual brain is like the cockpit of an F1 fighter jet," Gaddam said. "There are tons of dials and instruments, and there's sophisticated calibration going on."

To fully appreciate this, feast your eyes on these two real search histories from America Online users:

MAN: college cheerleaders; cheerleaders in Hawaii; pics of bikinis and girls; pretty girls in bikinis; girls suntanning in bikinis; college cheerleader pics in bikinis; noooooooo; christian advice on lust

WOMAN: orlando bloom as vampire fanfiction; 321 sex chat; kingdom of heaven fanfiction; cinderella wedding dresses; gossip on orlando bloom; legolas erotica; legolas heterosexual erotica; evil orlando bloom dark fanfiction

As you can see, this woman tends to prefer stories ("fanfiction," or narratives based on existing movies/TV/literature) much more than the man, who searches for specific images. The majority of these stories are romantic and lightly erotic, but plenty of women like graphic erotic stories, too. In the search above you can see this one gal is particularly interested in Legolas from "Lord of the Rings" and the actor who portrays him: Orlando Bloom. And there's a lot of conversation that goes on among women about erotic stories about the inner feelings of the characters, whereas men consume porn alone and don't talk about the aesthetics, Gaddam said.

"Male erotica is a solitary enterprise, and female erotica is a social enterprise," Ogas said.

A minority of women do watch visual porn. Based on analyses of user profiles on a porn website, these ladies tend to be more socially aggressive, comfortable taking risks, and open to bisexual experiences. They also tend to have a higher sex drive.

And while many men do seek out porn involving young women, there's a substantial interest in seeing scantily clad (or not clad at all) older women too. Significant numbers of web searches and websites out there are devoted to women in their 40s, 50s, 60s. There's even a genre called "granny porn," with a consistent following, in which the male performer's age is highly variable.  It's hard to know how old the men are who are seeking this class of erotica, but the authors speculate they come from a wide range of ages, since men's sexual interests are pretty solid by age 25. Women, on the other hand, have much more flexible and dynamic interests during a lifetime.

What about homosexuality? The authors compared gay and straight male sexuality, and found they were strikingly similar. The differences: gay men like men, and are more likely to be aroused by the submissive role in sex than straight men. Lesbians are far more complicated, and Ogas and Gaddam don't think they have enough information to make any definitive comparisons about it.

The authors don't take any moral positions on any of this, but they do point out that individual tastes and preferences are difficult or impossible to modify. Yet everyone assumes their own interests are the norm, and we quickly label anything else as weird or even dangerous, Gaddam said.

"We should all be more sexually tolerant," Ogas said.

Is anyone else having a problem with the filters? I had a serious comment article but apparently can't say anything about this topic without using a banned word.

Diedra...I had the same problem. I wrote two thoughtful responses to the article. Both of my responses had the SAME descriptive words as the article uses..."s3x" and "org..." but, I spelled them normally. The filter rejected my appropriate responses even though the article mentions these same words verbatum. If there's ever been a case of bringing CNN's journalistic credibility into question, it is with instances like this...where serious responses like ours get flagged for using the same language as the author uses. This is very troubling.

So...now CNN is buying into discredited 'research' that was biased to start with and presenting it as cold hard scientific fact?

Come ON. Seriously. This has been debunked six ways from Sunday, and these guys deliberately skewed their 'surveys' to support whatever they wanted to say at the time. CNN, honestly. Go vet your sources a little bit better. The internet ripped this apart months ago.

I would guess this study tell more about what turns on the researchers than what turns on those that answered the survey. Qualitative research, especially when done online by the computer illiterate, is always suspect.

    • Tez

Exactly. They made the 'data' fit what they already wanted to say. Besides, when the university they claim to be affiliated with publicly states they have not a thing to do with this study and what's in it, that probably says something about its validity.

      May 9, 2011 at 13:15 | Report abuse |
    • ???

It does seem the link you give lists many people's major complaint being that they did not tell survey respondents they were writing a book about the results. As long as they honor any confidentiality statements they had that isn't a valid complaint. As a researcher I have conducted research with prior knowledge that I may write a book about the findings if they are interesting enough, so far none have been (most research is useful but not interesting to the general public). Of the complaints on the site linked I think that the most valid would be that the researchers appear to have the a priori assumption that fan fiction is written for the purpose of arousal. It shows a prejudicial belief about fiction in general by the researchers and very limited thinking.

      May 9, 2011 at 13:27 | Report abuse |
    • Kate Deveraux

So I have seen a horde of comments of this sort surrounding this book and I looked into them - including the one you linked to. These are comments about a survey these researchers did a couple of years back. I've been reading the book and one thing they–and scientist reviewers–stress is how unreliable surveys are, and how the authors bypass this limitation by directly looking at raw data. So all these complaints about surveys are quite misguided.

Their website and book state what they are looking at "Ogas and Gaddam analyzed a billion web searches, a million Web sites, a million erotic videos, a million erotic stories, millions of personal ads, and tens of thousands of digitized romance novels. "

I am still not sure if this would truly represent the full richness of our desire - but I am willing to take a look.I think a criticism of this approach would be reasonable, but it should be based on the content of their book and arguments. You are doing us all a disservice with your angry, emotional, and ultimately uninformed rebuttal. Let's have a scientific response here, please?

These comments right here validate the authors' findings. All the men are concerned about how women look: their weight, their cellulite, their age while women want a "good man", which encompasses more of who he is and how he behaves. The comments that most men have left here indicate they are extremely undesirable due to their shallowness and intolerance. We put up with men's spare tires and aren't out there lusting after [completely inexperienced, idiotic] early 20-something boys. We love our men for who they are, not how they look. If men want female companionship who will be asking for seconds and thirds, be nice all around and it will be returned.

It's insulting, detrimental and irresponsible to make a statement that implies a 12 year old boy is "psychologically turrned on" just because he is reacting physiologically to what someone is doing to him. That is the same logic that his r@pist applied! How dare you, CNN. I demand a retraction or clarification of this statement.

It's closer to science than "I know this girl and she likes etc" and "I heard a lot of people etc." At least they tried. But it's not science unless it can predict stuff, or at least it's "soft" science compared to "hard" science.

Science doesn't have to be causal- this research just shows correlations. Its certainly closer to science than what you say.

I love the streotype of guys being the dumb, one-size-fits-all for arousal apes, and women being so sophisticated when it comes to s.e.x. The author asserts that it takes one thing to arouse a man but women are more complex. But in the example, the woman's search is all related to one thing: Orlando Bloom. Pretty complex, eh? Gimme a break!

Let's get real here! The only thing that turns women on is MONEY! Take the 20 year old female that marries the 80 year old rich male, she ain't doin him cause of his experience, if she's doin him at all? Plain and simple, Most women are just a bunch of goldiggers deep down inside.

That only reinforces male stereotypes, JustaGuy. Think about it.

When we reduce life to women wanting money and men wanting to get off, we have taken on a deep and dangerous cynicism. I have felt the temptation to reduce things this way myself, but I have seen how dangerous that is. Please examine your beliefs with the notion that we human beings are so very much more than what you are communicating.

Man, these filters are TOUGH with this subject matter.
I have encountered more than one supposedly hetero female who likes male g^y stories and books. What is up with that? Is this common? Looks really boring to me – professor and student, blah, blah, blah.

      Yeah the filtering is ridiculous...

I think that probably "those women" maybe identify with the submissive character in a way & maybe they like to read about him going through some of the stuff that a woman "normally" would ... just a guess. A little of that goes a long way for me. Altho I imagine a lot of it could involve Orlando Bloom / Legolas! LOL

Yes, men can be turned on physically much easier than women. We all are aware of that.

But once again- most likely because this was written by a female, we read that men are ...."simple-simple-simple". What exactly is "simple" about fetishism?Absolutely nothing-it's an endless world of theater that stretches in absolutely every direction that the human psyche can go.

Formulaically asserting that you are "complex", does not simply make your opinion valid. What is true- more often than not- is that you oversimplify men to validate yourself, and to assert that your desires, needs, and feelings should always take precedence over his.

Oh, please, do we have to read more of this simplistic, reductive, half-baked pseudo-science on what comedy writer Preston Sturges summed up to be "Subject A"? The analogies in this article are weak and can be replaced by countless others with at least as much merit. We're frequently handed comparisons from scientists to what's spelled s-e-you-know-what, each of them promising to be definitive, a lock on underlying cause. There will never be an end to these, like puns we constantly make on words to load them with suggestions and double entendres. They are all inventions they will never run out. Every time I read a researcher in all seriousness say "s– is like x" I want to send them straight to a Jerry Lewis film, the unsurpassed ridicule for analysing something as sweet, stupid, shifty and soulful as that thing our lovers do.

"The "detective agency" would make sure that the chosen male would not be cruel, unfaithful or sneaky, would protect the woman and her child."

Funny considering how such a high percentage tend to preferentially flock around the "bad-boy", jerk,y known cheater-players while wrinkling their noses at guys described as "nice" or "trustworthy" and so many are into silly games and if the guy shows too much actual real interest they run or get bored. Is it any wonder they always complain about how guys are such jerks when that is the type they go after the most and when they, ironically, tend to label the guys who I know are NOT jerks as the jerks and the jerks as awesome guys. One hint, if you see a guy treating most other guys like crap but he treat you like a queen he isn't actually in it to care for you and if you see a guy always there for you and trying to be nice don't take that as he is just sucking up to get some because he is probably more actually into you than the other guy.

The date of the study goes unmentioned, but the search histories suggest it stretched from 2001-2005 (and/or beyond). Any AOL user 2001 and beyond is either a grandparent or terrified of change, neither of which can be called "average" when it comes to arousal. A greater majority of women may very well need fantasy to become aroused, but using AOL search histories to conclude that completely invalidates it.

Men populate the world by spreading their seed, and they've been successful in doing it. Women are the vessels for our seed. If women are tolerable, we stay with them and are happy. When they begin to get intolerable and neurotic and controlling, we start looking around and bone their best friend, sister, coworker, boss, or enemy who happens to be hot. It takes two to tango and women come around like the city bus; there's a new one every 15 minutes.

  46. Sensing something

Once again it appears that CNN is trying to push political correctness as fact. This study more than appears to be coming from a slanted viewpoint as opposed to an objective one. Having worked around Hotels in Hawaii we see many women flocking to very good looking men here in Hawaii and the same ones seem to have no problem getting a lot of tourists to spend time with them.
Also, this whole notion that it is because they want to feel desired. Sure I think that is true of many married women, but these same men have to put very little effort to have female company and they are not necessarily spending time trying to make the women feel desired. I guess it hurts to admit that sometimes a woman will be attracted to a man for nothing but physical reasons. In that way maybe men and women sometimes aren't so different, but that wouldn't be keeping with our preconceived notions.

You cannot classify men or women into one category. There are just as many simple women as there are simple men, but that's not a bad thing. Things get complicated when people start calling themselves "complex"- subconsciously implying emotional baggage, scars, are unrealistic ideals. I would much rather be simple and live an easy life than be overly complex and too focused on my self to realize the beauty in everybody.
