Why do I keep getting urinary tract infections?Every weekday, a CNNHealth expert doctor answers a viewer question. On Mondays, it's pediatrician Dr. Jennifer Shu. Question asked by Elizabeth of Sacramento, California: I've had 11 urinary tract infections in 13 months and the doctors only give me antibiotics. What is causing this to happen to me? I am scared it could be something really bad. What can I do? I do not know the details of your situation but can offer some information about recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI) in women. A UTI is any infection (usually caused by bacteria) of the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. While repeated infections are often found in healthy women, they may signal a problem with the anatomy or function of a woman's urinary tract. Abnormalities of the urinary system may be found using imaging studies such as an X-ray, ultrasound or CT scan. Certain practices such as infrequent or incomplete voiding, sexual intercourse (particularly with the use of spermicides), and poor hygiene can lead to repeated urinary tract infections. Conditions such as diabetes, pregnancy and neurological disorders can also increase a person's risk for UTI. To avoid further infections it can be helpful to urinate frequently and drink plenty of fluids. Some physicians recommend taking probiotics to help prevent UTIs, and for some women an oral antibiotic daily or after sexual intercourse may be necessary. Research studies have not confirmed theories that wearing tights or panty hose, wiping improperly after using the toilet, douching, or using hot tubs may increase infections, although avoiding such practices probably wouldn't hurt. For concerns about your own situation, I encourage you to talk to your doctor to see if additional testing, treatment or a consultation with a specialist might be helpful. Good luck! |

You have many urinary tract infections.
I would suggest seeing a urologist. I have bladder inflammation which causes this. Have him take tests to find out what's going on.
I has been treated for bladder infections with antibiotics and was drinking tone of water. Ends up it was the chlorine in the water burning my bladder and kidnays, not an infection, that's why the antibiotics never worked. Switch to unchlorinated water and no coffee, see what happens.
Have your men wash really good with some strong anti bacteral soap RIGHT before sex. The UTI's will go away. At least they did for me and my wife. While there can be other reasons for this try this before you do any other treatments. Not sure why this is coming from us men, but I believe it is somehow. I found out about this on another blog after my wife's 9th UTI during a one year period. Once I started washing just before sex, UTI's went away.
I am only 12 1/2 and I have had MANY bladder infections. I get them, the doctors give me medicine, they go away for 4-5 days then come back. I have missed a lot of school due to UTI's and I am hoping the doctors can figure out why i get so many.
I would get frequent UTI's, one every 6 months on average. A round of antibiotics would clear them up, but I couldn't figure out why they kept returning. After visiting the urologist and having a cystoscopy done to look inside my bladder, he found evidence of recent passage of small kidney stones. After a CT scan found two medium-sized stones lodged in my right kidney (I've had them before), I had a lithotripsy done to pulverize them. I also changed my diet to avoid having such an acidic pH (lots of sugars–both complex and simple–will make your body more acidic than it normally should be), and haven't had either a kidney stone or UTI in a year and a half.
I suffered from uti's for many years and tried everything out there, am resistant to most antibiotics now and then I discovered that taking 6000 – 8000 mg if vitamin C with rose hips daily has cleaned out my urinary tract within a few days to the point of having had a white discharge that is now gone and everything feels healthy again the way it use to before I kept getting all these uti's. I heard years ago that drinking lemon juice daily would do this but for me that wasn't enough and the vit. c in large doses is doing it. I was praying for a natural solution and so far have not had another uti. I have been on a 4000 mg a day maintenance dose after the initial 1 week high dose. It can cause diarrhea but one can take something for that until you get to a lower dose.
Kim, my wife all of the sudden started getting a lot of UTI's as well. We went to the Urologist many times and asked how this was occuring etc. We got nowhere doing this it just seems like there is a lot of confusion on this issue. The only thing that works is I have to wash up really good before sex. This thing must be coming from us men. Not sure how whether it is from candida, or from bacteria that is on us or what. My wife and I have been together for 24 years and this just developed about 3 years ago. Just the other day I washed with some hand soap in the bathroom that was dilluted with water from just about being out. My wife got a UTI the next day, and we could not figure out why until we figured out that the soap was diluted. So long story short, if your man washes really well with some strong anti bacteria soap just before sex, these should go away. It has to be right before sex as well even if he washes and then you wait 30 mins, it can cause a UTI. So, while not necessarily always convenient, it is not that bad for us men to make sure we are super clean before intercourse. Have your man try that and see how it goes. Not sure if any alcohol wipes or anything else could be used for when not around some good soap. Might be worth a try, but the result could be another UTI.
It also makes a difference if the doctor takes the time to recheck the urine after treatment to be sure that the infection is totally gone. If incompletely treated, it may recur.
I have IC- Painful Bladder Syndrome which FEELS like a urinary infection, but sadly it is chronic inflamation of the bladder. A urologist- preferably a uro-gyno will be able to get to the bottom of your condition.
I have it too and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy
See a urologist, the bladder is not a gynecologic organ. Make sure you get urine cultures done as other disease can mimic UTIs.
I have IC too. My gyno and other doctors thought I was having frequent bladder infections so I was given antibiotics and drank cranberry juice, which just made it worse (gross hematuria worse). I went to a urologist and had a CT scan and a cystoscopy to diagnose it. I wish I had just waited the 6 months to see Dr. Parsons because he could had diagnosed me without all that unneeded CT radiation. His instillations are helping me more than anything my previous two urologists have tried. If you think you have IC, try to see Dr. Parsons. He's the best. IC is extremely painful. Good luck!
A urogynecologist is an excellent recommendation. While the bladder is not a gyn organ, it does reside in the pelvic floor. A urogyn has specialty training in all disorders of the pelvic floor especially the female bladder. In fact, a urogyn probably has more experience with the female bladder in 3 years of subspecialty training than a urologist in 6 years of training. If you are being treated for recurrent UTI, my #1 recommendation is to make sure they are culture proven. The majority of the time, women are being treated for symptoms of UTI (ie IC) and not in fact actual bacterial infections.
Two words: Cranberry Juice.
I get UTIs and have found cranberry juice really helps prevent and cure them. I am calorie conscious, so I went to my local organic story and found cranberry concentrate in pill form. I take a few a day along with my regular supplements and have not had a UTI in two years!!
Ditto the cranberry. I got UTIs on a regular basis for years, but once I started taking cranberry tablets regularly, I stopped getting the UTIs.
change boy friend!
This was the most UNHELPFUL article ever written. Nothing at all is helpful here for those suffering with recurring UTI's. If you have battled this problem for any amount of time you already know how to wipe and drink plenty of fluids. CNN is ridiculous to post such a lame article. This article is nothing more than a cut-and-paste after Googling 'UTI'.
I spent two years getting UTI after UTI and yeast infection after yeast infection. I thought it was because my boyfriend didn't shower often and I started avoiding s*xual contact with him. Come to find out, I was/am diabetic and the infections were caused by elevated proteins in my urine. A telltale sign is a pink grime ring around the water in your toilet. I thought it was something in the water, but its common with diabetics who have excess sugars in their urine.
Don't suffer with this. I walked around with a nearly constant yeast infection for two years... it was horrible. Now that I am healthy and a well-controlled diabetic, I have no idea how I survive with the symptoms as long as I did.
I was like you – yest and urinary tract infections all the time. I was not a diabetic, but my sugar was on the high normal range – 99 mg/dL . After I went on the low-carb diet , all that was gone, together with migraines, mood-swings, asthma, leg edema, seasonal flues, 30 lb of fat and other things – list is too long.. I have been living like that for 4 years and enjoying my health. Watch your fasting blood sugar levels, ladies. Never let it rise over 90 mg/dL . Don't be afraid of saturated fats, meat, eggs, batter, ditch all that grains(whole grain or not), sugar and limit fruits.
My sister battled infections for years. After many tests and a couple of surgery's they discovered her urethra was too short. It was something she was born with and surgery could help her, but it did have some side effects. After her diagnoses she realized she needed to be extra careful with anything that could trigger a bladder infection. I would go and see a urologist though. They will be able to help you.
I recurring UTI's for over a year. Found out that I was refluxing which allowed urine to travel back up the ureter into my kidney. Had surgery to correct and rarely have one. Doc just prescribed antibotics then switched Doc's and he figured it out. Kidney now damaged because of the delayed diagnosis.
I had the same – congenital defect meant I had constant reflux. I had many unexplained, high fevers as a child that turned out to be kidney infections. Surgery helped correct the problem in my teens. Definitely get checked out by a urologist!
I had an enlarged uterus which would not let my bladder empty completely which caused my UTI's
Gwen, how did they find out your large uterus was the problem? I have an enlarged uterus from a large fibroid. i have been getting urinary tract infections every month for a year , so i asked my gynocologist if my uterus or fibroid could be the cause....she said no...but i am still not convinced.
I often had repeated infections, until my kidney doctor told me to start taking cranberry extract as a supplement. Haven't had an infection in over a year now.
I used to get frequent UTI's also. They are very painful. I found out my fasting blood sugar was high so I stopped eating all sugary snacks and only eat fruit for sugar. I have done this for 4 months and have had no UTI's since.
I had this problem quite a bit at a young age and after years of testing, they finally found that I was born with two ureters on each side of my bladder and it was causing the infection to not clear completely and return all the time. After I had surgery to have them removed, they haven't been as frequent and most of the time, if I do get them now – it's because I'm drinking too much soda..
Too many Urinary Tract Infections? Sounds like a classic case of wiping your backside back to front rather than front to back.
Think of what you are dragging from your backside into your front side. Kaka in the front side will almost always cause a UTI. Unfortunately not enough young women are taught this when young.
You don't know what the hell you are talking about. A person that knows how to wipe and is very clean can still have a lot of UTI's
I also had 13 months of what I thought were recurring UTIs. They came back so regularly, you could set your watch to them, and the pain was severe. Yet the DRs said I didn't show enough bacteria in my urine to have a UTI. It turned out I had cervicitis! So if you're having recurring UTI symptoms, please don't overlook your cevix as the possible source of the problem. Hope this helps someone.
I I have had dozens of UTI's, and the sure-fire thing that I found causes it is not urinating after intercourse. If I get lazy and "forget" to pee right after, I will get an infection 9 times out of 10. A daily dose of colloidal silver for a month or so every once in a while helps too. I know it sounds "hippie-ish", but it really does work! 🙂
Colloidal silver is a huge mistake. I'm all for naturopathic medicine but that's useless at best and harmful at worst.
I have also had many, many recurring bladder infections. My urologist finally figured out that I was not emptying properly due to a stretch bladder. This comes from drinking too much liquid and not urinating enough, it also happens during pregnancy, as babies tend to sit on your bladder and therefore it becomes out of shape and doesn't drain properly. Here was his solution and it worked. Bladder training. You urinate when you feel the urge, set a timer for 15 minutes and urinate again, no matter how much or how little. This training, over a 3 months shrinks your bladder back down. I am a true believer. I have not had a UTI in almost a year and it has been a wonderful year. I went through all the antibiotics, etc, to relieve these but finally came to a point where the antibiotics weren't even helping and had no other choice but to find an alternative solution. Good luck to all, I feel your pain 🙁
I had had maybe 2 UTIs for most of my adulthood. Then at 32 got a new boyfriend (still together 4 years later)...starting getting recurring UTI's every month. It was a vicious cycle of antibiotics, which caused a yeast infection. I tried everything, cranberry supplements, peeing at the correct times, avoiding certain types of clothing. I started taking a prophylactic antibiotic which helped. It never made sense to me why this suddenly happened and I really didn't think it had anything to do with wiping or peeing properly. Finally I did some medical research through the medical library where I work and saw some studies showed probiotics could help. I started taking a high quality probiotic supplement and I haven't had a problem the past two years with UTI's or yeast infections. You need to have healthy bacteria in your system to take care of the "bad" bacteria. Antibiotics kill all the good bacteria along with the bad so you have to put the good stuff back where it belongs!
Sarah, sorry – 3 or 4 years after you originally posted this comment – I'm curious as to what high quality probiotic you are using. Thanks!
Make sure the doctor is giving you the correct medicines. This happened to me because the doctor was giving wrong meds.
I used to get UTI's quite frequently, one every three months like clockwork. It was actually my birth control causing it. Once I switched brands, I haven't had an infection since (5 years now).
Stop drinking cokes or any carbonated drink just drink water or unsweetened tea helps my wife all the time. Try it out might help you guys.
Wow. This person needs to see a urologist, particulary one who specializes in pelvic pain. I saw a urologist (female, current on research) for a similar problem after suffering for years. My previous general practioners and gynecologists were not helpful at all. The urologist told me that most doctors other than uroligists have a VERY limited scope of knowledge about all things pelvic. Most GPs and GYNs will just keep doing what they've always done. Websites like ic-network.com have a wealth of information–including folks sharing the names of good urologists.
See a Dr because what you think is a UTI very well could be a STD or if your urine is dark it could be a liver problem. Dont mess with it go see a dr
Drink cranberry or lemon juice, say 50% juice 50% water, before bed each night. It'll keep the PH of your bladder higher and help prevent infections.
I used to get UTIs about once a month. About 5 years ago, I started taking a cranberry supplement (can get at any drug store) once a day. I have not had a UTI since. Apparently, our mothers were right.
I had reoccurring bladder infections and discovered they were caused by fabric softener. In my case it was Bounce dryer sheets and whatever chemical they used built up on my underwear and towels. I had never used dryer sheets before the infections and have never had another one since I stopped. Please consider that this might be the problem and immediately wash anything that could be effected.
If you get UTI frequently, it could be caused by you or your partner having unprotected intercourse with other partners, reinfecting each orther.
What has helped me over the years is the following....drink cranberry juice (without sugar), no bubble baths, and urinating after intercourse. These three things have helped me tremendously with this issue!
First of all, most unhelpful article ever. Secondly, get thee to a urologist asap to rule out any number of issues, most of which are all easily treatable.
I was suffering from frequent infections for years. None of this usual "advice" helped. Cranberry didn't help either. I finally saw a new doctor and she suggested d-mannose. FINALLY something that worked. I was at a point where antibiotics didn't seem to help and it felt like I had an infection all the time (probably because my bladder was so irritated.) The d-mannose is seriously magic. It's an all-natural supplement, no prescription needed, it is a form of sugar that is not metabolized by the body and passes right into the urinary tract. Ecoli, the bacteria that most commonly causes UTIs, is more attracted to the d-mannose than it is to the bladder walls. The bacteria sticks to the d-mannose and is flushed out. It's a powder, you just mix into some water and it's pretty much tasteless (only a very slight sweet taste.) I couldn't believe how well it worked. At the first sign of a UTI, I swig a glass of it, and feel better within an hour and it's GONE. It's not 100%, just because it doesn't work as well against other forms of bacteria, which account for 5% of UTIs. So, very rarely, I have gotten an infection that I couldn't shake with the d-mannose, but once every two years is better than once a month. My bladder went back to feeling normal after using d-mannose, it was like it flushed out every last bit of bacteria that was hiding in there.
It shocks me that more people don't know about d-mannose because it really works for a lot of people. Not even my urologist knew about it. ???
also, in the last few months I've been doing low-carb eating and have noticed that I have not not even a slight hint of a UTI.
I did see a urologist, they found nothing wrong, but wanted me to take an antibiotic every day for two months. I decided against it because to me that seems like a great way to encourage the growth of antibiotic resistant bacteria, and my natural solutions are working much better than the antibiotics ever did.
I used to get UTIs all the time and all the doctors used to tell me to drink tons of cranberry juice and eat yogurt. Ironically, the second I stopped eating those foods, the UTIs went away – I must have some weird bacterial balance, so maybe that's what you have as well.
My Mother has suffered with re-occuring bladder infections for the past 10 years. She recently had one so bad that the physician suggested hospitalization. She had to have two injections of antibiotics and prescriptions as well. She was so miserable she said she could scream. She has been told she is borderline diabetic and she has had kidney stones in the past, which were removed surgically. She is 78 years old and her quality of life is diminished due to this problem. I would think after 10 years of medical treatment, someone would find out what the problem is and take care of it. Any suggestions as to what type of future medical attention she should seek.
I have had reoccuring uti/kidney infections for the past 10 yrs. as well. My last one (before the one , I now have) , ended up going into my kidneys, giving me chills, fevers, back pain, and feeling faint. They gave me two rounds of antibiotic shots and an antibiotic (oral). It kicked it right out, however 3 wks. later I have another one. Not as severe but still not pleasant. I am only 27. I have been to several different doctors, and they keep putting me on the same antibiotics, which I sometimes feel like screaming , apparently it's not working!
I hope your mother finds relief from this soon. It can be the very annoying and painful. And many people who don't have them can't seem to understand how painful they can get. (my dh for example).
Women with these chronic kinds of problems should see a "Female Urologist." This is a sub-specialty of urology, and these docs are fellowship trained in female urological problems AFTER they have finished a residency in urology, unlike uro-gyn's who are not urologists. Call your nearest medical university to locate a Female Urologist. Proper treatment can change your life, as it did mine.
Vitamin B-complex, two pills a day. Three when I'm on my period. I never have to take antibiotics anymore for UTI's or bladder infections. I hate cranberry juice.
i had a bladder infection a week ago now i think im getting one again. ive never had this problem with my boyfriend so i no its not bc of him. i dont no wat it is. i go to the bathroom when i need to.i have to pee alot:(it sucks. what is causeing this to happen? i dont want to have to get surgery im only 15 almost 16...to tel the turth im kinda scared
Try D-MANOOSE, you can find it in powder form at any health food store. My urologist says its as effective as low dose antibiotics so it can be taken safely on a daily basis for prevention of UTI's. I had recurrent infections for nearly 2 years, I started taking D-Manoose and Im down to about 1 infection a year. Good luck!
I'm also suffering from constant uti but when I drink water I notice it goes away . But I don't know what causes it . Needs to see an urologist.
I also suffer from frequent uti's... im 19 and i get a uti atleast once every 2 months.... along with some other weird symptoms... like very very watery discharge and burning irritation.. i have been to my doctor about this and also an emergency roomdoctor.. both did the dipstick test and said i had a large percentage of blood and bacteria in my urine... well ever since i got my first uti ive always made sure to urinate after intercourse with my boyfriend ( only person ive ever been with and im the only person hes ever been with) i make sure to wipe front to back and i drink water and crandberry juice...... its starting to become unbearable... my boyfriend thinks its my birth control and i asked my doctor but he said borth control wouldnt cause this.... i dont know what else to do.... i guess the next step for me will to go to a specialized doctor... im very scared that something serious is wrong with meh..... help??!!! =(
Kylie, I feel your pain! I am twenty and I have had four UTIs in the past 2 months. It is so unbearable. I have been to three doctors, going to a gynecologist next week. I have been told by every doctor that there is no bacteria in my urine, yet they keep giving me antibiotics for a UTI. I'm hoping my gyno will refer me to a urologist...I really feel like that's my only hope. I hope you feel better.
hey, im 14 and im getting UTI's like all the time and they put me on meds all the time it helps then like 4 weeks later i have another one (it suxs).. so how do u get infections? ANSWERS!!!
Take capsule garlic everyday and it will go away forever.
if you have UTI, you might want try to take garlic. Three capsules and a cup of Organic cranberry juice no sugar with a meal twice daily. I used to have UTI and I take garlic capsule everyday. Now I don't have anymore UTI when I have sexual intercourse with my husband. Do you know garlic is the enemy of bacteria.
It is the best time to make some plans for the future and it is time to be happy. I have read this submit and if I may just I want to suggest you few fascinating issues or suggestions. Maybe you can write next articles relating to this article. I wish to learn even more things approximately it!

If you use a catheter I found a cure for recurring UTIs that might help you too. I had been dealing with never ending infections for more than 20 years and have had every test imaginable including MRI & exploratory all negative but still getting infections. I've taken massive amounts of antibiotics from Bacterium to IV Vancomycin with mid-lines & pick-lines always with the same result; three days after stopping the medication the infections were back. I've also tried every homeopathic wonder product including D-Mannose, STAT & Silver with no results. I use a sterile self urinary catheterization system in conjunction with antibacterial soap and water, germicide, alcohol foamed antiseptic, betodine, gloves and a new catheter every time and I still get infected. Working with multiple doctors wasn't working so I went to the Internet and read up on everything just as you are doing. Giving it allot of thought and by using the process of illumination I knew my test said I had no problems from my kidneys to my bladder, and I'm sure it's not coming from my catheterizing technique so how is infection entering my bladder? Realizing we were treating the infections but not the cause. Where were they coming from? Where haven't we looked? Bingo! There is one ares that was overlooked and never treated with the antibiotics. "The Urethra" Every time a sterile catheter was inserted it pushed infection in the urethra into the bladder.
Treatment was as simple as tipping the catheter with 0.01% gentamicin.
That's it and after all the years of doctors, specialist, drugs and suffering and finally no more UTIs and an end to the physical and emotional stress.
I hope this is your problem so you to can feel the physical and mental relief of being being free of drugs and infections.

I suffered with uti's for over ten years. I did everything under the sun to get rid of them like drinking plenty of water, cranberry juice, wiping correctly after using the bathroom, peeing after sex and having my husband wash himself before sex but still I continued to get them. I searched and searched the Internet for an answer as I was at the stage where I was getting them every month and I just could not get rid of them. Then finally I came across a blog where this lady suggested giving up milk. She had done this 20 years ago and never looked back. True enough I did this plus I got a blessing from my priest and I am happy to say I no longer suffer with uti's. I just wanted to share this info with you as I know what all you people on this blog are going through.
Im only 18 and I constantly have urine infection, the doctor only give me antibiotics, but legit every time I do a pee test even if it has nothing to do with a urine infection I get a call back saying I have a bacterial infection, im getting that immune to the urine infections, most of the time I don't no they are there, but it still hurts to pee. But I am now 8 and half weeks pregnant, and im scared my urine infections are going to harm my baby, is this possible? all the doctors do is still give me antibiotics.
Please Help, thankyou!
My mother in law was having urine infection constantly. We put in a water treatment system of Oxy Blast, a Hydrogen Peroxide base product. That ended her problem as long as it was in her water supply. It is simple and cheap. You need the oxygen leave at 50 to 75 PPM. It is Mother Natures Product. No antibiotics to be wasted down the drain.
Some people are more likely than others to get bladder infections. Women tend to get them more often than men due to their urethra being shorter and closer to the anus. Among the women most likely to get bladder infections are women who are pregnant, going through menopause and using a diaphragm for birth control. Men who have prostate inflammation or enlargement will also be more likely to have bladder infections. Risk factors that apply to both men and women are; kidney stones, sexual intercourse with multiple partners, narrowed urethra, immobility such as recovering from hip fracture, not drinking enough fluids, bowel incontinence and catheterization. Elderly people and people with diabetes are also at higher risk of bladder infections.;
