Marijuana use may speed psychosisUsing marijuana, or cannabis, may cause psychosis to develop sooner in patients already predisposed to developing it, and in other patients the drug may even cause psychosis, according to a new study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry. "This finding is an important breakthrough in our understanding of the relationship between cannabis use and psychosis," according to the study. "It raises the question of whether those substance users would still have gone on to develop psychosis a few years later." Patients with psychosis tend to lose touch with reality and are prone to hallucinations and delusions about what is happening around them. Psychosis is frequently reported among patients with diagnosed mental illness such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. According to the study led by Australian researchers, in which data from 83 studies involving more than 20,000 patients were analyzed, marijuana users experienced psychosis about three years younger than non-users. Users of other substances (besides pot) experienced symptoms of psychosis two years sooner. Alcohol use had no influence on development of psychosis, according to the study. "Reducing the use of cannabis could be one of the few ways of altering the outcome of the illness because earlier onset of schizophrenia is associated with a worse prognosis," according to the study. "An extra two or three years of psychosis-free functioning could allow many patients to achieve the important developmental milestones of late adolescence and early adulthood that could lower the long-term disability arising from psychotic disorders." But experts say the complexity of interaction between genes and environment, and the possibility that cannabis is, in fact, a way to self-medicate when psychotic symptoms arise are not accounted for in this study. The marijuana-schizophrenia link "It is distinctly possible, in fact likely, that folks who experience initial symptoms turn to cannabis in an effort to control them, then end up having a psychotic break of some sort earlier simply because they had their first symptoms earlier," said Mitch Earleywine, an associate professor of psychology at the State University of New York at Albany, who is also a marijuana policy expert. "This predicament makes it look as if cannabis preceded the psychotic symptoms when, in fact...folks with worse symptoms who are more likely to have an early break might simply be more likely to turn to cannabis." Theories about an association between marijuana use and schizophrenia include several –sometimes interrelated - scenarios: The possibility that cannabis causes schizophrenia; that cannabis may cause people vulnerable to schizophrenia to develop symptoms; that cannabis may make schizophrenia symptoms worse; or that people with schizophrenia are more likely to use cannabis, according to the study. Study authors suggest that this study, "lends weight to the view that cannabis use precipitates schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders," perhaps because of some confluence of genetic and environmental factors, or because using cannabis early in life may disrupt brain development. "[This study] found that cannabis is associated with early onset of psychosis and that is most likely true but it doesn't answer the question of which way it goes," said Dr. Charles L. Raison, associate professor in the department of psychiatry at Emory University, and CNNHealth's mental health expert doctor. "Does smoking cannabis early in life make you vulnerable to getting early psychosis or is the first manifestation of psychosis to do drugs and alcohol, or is it both?" Do you have diagnosed schizophrenia? How well are you managing it? Raison added that other studies suggesting a causal relationship between marijuana use and psychosis disagree with this one. Whatever the relationship between cannabis and psychosis, experts can agree that early use of cannabis is problematic. "No one wants to see young people get heavily involved with any psychoactive substances," said Earleywine. |

The government won't let me smoke marijuana because it's dangerous. They will however let me smoke cigarettes. Then after I get cancer from those cigarettes, the government says I can smoke marijuana to make go away the pain from the cancer treatments I have to get because of the cigarettes they let me smoke earlier.
Only losers like Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps smoke marijuana. He smokes weed, and all he managed to do with his pathetic self was capture a nation's heart and lead America to 4 gold medals. What a loser.

oh oh watch out people now we got ignorant cops on here, do your self a favor a learn... a real grower spends more than eight to ten hours a day dealing with a garden, over a 6 to 9 month span and if your an indoor grower its all year round dealing with the garden at least 12 hours a day. depending on size of garden.
What's worse... someone pretending to be a police officer by just saying so online, or someone that gets upset about it because they believe some anonymous poster's claim online?
Sorry champ, I know growers out in Mendocino county. Your story is 100% BS.
Tim and Kevin.... Looks like your the BS's because I am a grower, a legal one at that and my day is fulled to the max taking care of my garden, and for believing if he is a cop or not is your stupidity, all I said we got someone acting like a cop, learn people. and for the growers in Mendocino they must suck because I never had any good smoke come from there, it always came from the North State by Oregon or in Oregon. Just because you got lazy friends doesn't mean we are all lazy.
Chris, I was talking to the cop, not you. Trust me, I DO know how much time you spend on your crops because, like I said, I know growers.
The article DID say that there wasn't a connection between alcohol use and psychosis, so I'm not sure why they are still saying they can't account for the cause/effect relationship. After all, wouldn't one turn to alcohol first, simply because it's easy to obtain and probably already in your fridge?
Alcohol use may speed stupidity.
I wonder what Timothy Leary would think about this so called study. Just more propaganda to cover up the governments mistake about not legalizing pot.
"said Mitch Earleywine, an associate professor of psychology at the State University of New York at Albany, who is also a marijuana policy expert"
Has anyone ever coorelated how many "marijuana policy experts" have ever DISAGREED with BS "studies" like this one?
smoking pot is like riding the choo choo train to hellstation then getting off for an inspection of the facilities
What kind of psychosis do people develop when they get thrown in prison when caught with a little bit of pot. Are there any "policy experts" doing studies on that?
what do they mean lose contact with the real world we finally know what is wrong with our goverment look at ther age group got to be that they all smoke to much pot
goverment propaganda! it's all bs. the goverment at one time said it would drive you crazy and want to kill people. what's the next lie. no i don't smoke pot! i just don't believe everything i read of hear!
JASON MICHAEL BARRY (C2432931) are we supposed to be scared by you listing your badge number or do you think its going to make people listen.
Wow.. cannabis makes people go crazy but alcohol does not. Thanks for pointing that out, because I would never have known, because the reverse seems to be true to those with the untrained eye.
JASON MICHAEL BARRY (C2432931) wow you know very little about growing indoors. i am a legal grower ommp. if i spent all that time taking care of the marijuana plant how would i be able to keep my job and sleep. i spend 2 hours a week! also it's 18 hours of metal halide for growth and 12 hours of high pressure sodium for flowering. to crop is 8 to 10 weeks. i don't smoke marijuana and i don't make any money. people who do stupid stuff on marijuana were stupid to begin with. marijuana being illigal is a waist of my taxes ( $42 billion a year). could be used for better public schools & more teachers per student.
I'd think it would be obvious, you get the right soil and grow lights or appripriate growing conditions, and it would be very little work, given that it's a plant (weed) and it'll just grow (barring any trimming, harvest time, etc.)
Ok Tim, since it's not so hard, please tell me the answers to the following:
1) How can you tell the difference between male, female, and hermaphroditic plants?
2) Which ones producethe highest-quality product
3) What kind of soil do you need?
4) What PH balance would make sure that you're not growing impotent plants?
5) When does germination occur?
6) When, if at all, do you separate plants in relation to germination?
7) What temperature do the lights need to be at?
8) Will fertilizers ruin the chemical balance of the plant?
9) What parasite risks are there when growing?
10) Would pesticides result in negative consquences for consumption?
11) How long should you wait until cultivation?
12) Which plants should you cultivate?
13) Which plants should you save for future reproduction?
14) How do you properly store and cure the plants, once cultivated?
Educate yourself.
The media can never over turn our beliefs towards marijuana, so why do they persist. There is going to be a minority of people who haven't tried it in at least five years. It's recreational use is enjoyed safely. We are all crazy anyways.
I have smoked marijuana nearly everyday, multiple times a day , for over 20yrs. I still managed to obtain an engineering degree during that time and have worked in nautical design for over 15yrs.( Pot only makes makes lazy unmotivated bums, lazy and unmotivated.) Not once has pot ever had any negative effects on me. I will grant you that anytime you burn something and inhale it there may be some ill effects but I have experienced far worse effects from alcohol, otc drugs, prescription drugs, caffeine, and fast food. If you do your research I'll guarantee you that either one of those does far more harm to people every year than does marijuana...
Legalize pot. Regulate it. Put a federal, state, local, and sin tax on it. Sell it in liquor and tobacco stores to people 21 and older and let it carry the same laws and penalties as alcohol. Release all the inmates imprisoned, jailed, or awaiting trial for marijuana related crimes. Free up policeman to go after more dangerous offenders. Which would not only save the tax dollars but also free up overcrowded prisons and jails so that they can house more violent offenders. Don't give me the crap that legalization would make it easier for kids to get. A store owner would ask to i.d. The illegal dealer on the street doesn't... Now lets consider the amount of jobs that would be created by a new regulated industry. Farming jobs to grow it. Facilities to process and warehouse the product, distribution, marketing and sales. Or we can continue to live in a world where we keep throwing money into something that has never worked. The Right has always cried about the govt. telling them what they can and can't eat (Michelle Obama) or what they can and can not do and then turn around and say." Marijuana? Can't have that! Synthetic Marijuana? Can't have that either! " I wonder how many of the negative studies are done with funding from the pharmaceutical and alcohol industries? Hmm. No bias there. Funny how all these "negative" effects by marijuana in these studies are always classified as "inconclusive"...
That's the worst argument I've ever seen. Legalized or not, why in the hell do people think it'll generate money for the state or government? If most people can grow and use it unregulated, there's LESS money to be made, since few to none would be buying any, anywhere. Then, consider that if, for example, California legalized it with no limits, where to you think all of the illegal aliens and out of state growers would move to grow it (until or unless it was legal in all US states). This wouldn't solve any problems regarding crime, unless all states all adopted legalization laws at around the same time. It would definitely not generate any state or federal revenue. It this was some manufactured drug, that would be different, but if people can grow it, there's no one to buy or tax the stuff. So long as people don't blow tons of pot smoke in my face or drive under the influence of it or any other substance, then I say legalize it. I mean, it's a joke how many people claim back pain and such and they can grow and use it legally anyway. It's just crooked doctors that are making money from it at this point anyway.
Tim – People can make their own wine and beer, yes? And yet we still buy, and are taxed on, wine and beer? And you expect people to not only know how to grow cannabis, but how to grow cannabis better than companies who'll sink literally billions into developing high-quality product?
Dumbest argument against the tax argument I've ever heard. Ever.
Tim – you can SEE arguments? Wow. You are like whoopie goldberg in that movie about a dead guy, starring a now dead guy,
What makes me shake my head is that all the pro-pot, pro-legalization on here try to use arguments like many medical drugs, and also alcohol and tobacco, are "worse" than marijuana. The answer to that bit of logic is WHO CARES? Trying to justify using something because it is "better" (which is a sketchy claim at best anyways) than something else that is bad is about as idiotic a theory as can be stated.
Excuse me demiloso, but why do you have the right to tell me what I can and cannot decide to put into my own body? It's certainly not for health reasons, as you clearly argued. So what's the point?!
No, excuse me Kevin. Not once did I mention the "right" to do anything. I simply pointed out the illogical and fruitless nature of some of the arguments that are abound on this board. I'm sorry you are confused.
My understanding, is that many people turn to alcohol to deal with the symptoms of schizophrenia. I doubt it's just pot. The fact this study shows more people that use pot experience these things where alcohol doesn't, seems interesting, I think. I've known far more people with schizophrenia turn to alcohol over anything else, so the case study is interesting comparing pot to alcohol. I am incline to believe it must play some role, but I understand they are suggesting people with early signs of schizophrenia are apparently perhaps more drawn to that over alcohol.
My experience with people that suffer from schizophrenia is still a very high percentage abusing alcohol over any other drug. That said, I've been told by people in the profession that deal with people whom suffer from schizophrenia, that pot doesn't cause any such damage and it only exacerbates symptoms while the patients are under the influence of the high at the time (i.e., not creating a situation where they are going to get any worse, any sooner, or have any long term symptoms that would at all relate to its usage). I'm surprised alcohol usage doesn't seem to create any type of damage to cause this, which explains why people abuse it to mask or deal with the illness, and it's likely the same for pot.
I"ve been online and blogging since before "blog" was a word, and in all that time I have never heard anything revealing or enlightening come from an MJ addicts posts. (other than they do point out how much more dangerous big-pharma mmeds are from time to time) MJ dulls your mind. Period.
Okay then Phillip. Take all of your albums and burn them. Destroy your DVD's andabout half of your books. After all, the people who made all that wonderful art that's enriched your life so much over the decades? STONED OUT OF THEIR MINDS.
@ Philip BS
Even moderate drinking coupled with habitual use of Tylenol(acetimenophen, or how it's spelled) causes liver damage leading to all sorts of physical and mental ailments. This fact was first published in 1972, but the FDA ignored this info. and allowed this dangerous drug to be used. Currently, American"s take nearly 10 billion Tylenol per year. Many are taken for mild-hangovers even light-drinkers experience, leading to liver damage. Your liver can handle alcohol intake if it is moderate. But if you are a drunkkard, or if you drink even moderately AND take Tylenol, your liver and your health will suffer.
Schizophrenia comes from when you were still in the womb. Your mom quit drinking. She quit smoking. But she did not quit taking her prescribed anti-depressants or her dangerous pharmaceuticals.(prescribed or otherwise) PS: Ronald Reagan did not die from alzhiemers. He died from mad-cow disease.
Alcohol may speed up psychosis. And on a MUCH, MUCH, faster scale than marijuana ever will!!!!!
Don't blame A PLANT that was made by God. Prescription drugs are one causes Mental Ilness and get' you artificially HIGH.
A PLANT MADE BY GOD IS NOT THE PROBLEM. It is alcohol,Meth,Cocaine,Crack etc etc. these drugs are made by man.
Pharmaceutical companies are the Drug Dealers of the world.
Crazy People ARE BORN NOT MADE by smoking marijuana. those 20,000 peopel must Born crazy. A PLANT DOES NOT HARM ANYONE, PEOPLE ARE HARM EACH OTHER.
IT IS A PLANT....period. People are so stupid to single Out a PLANT MADE BY GOD

People who are born Stupid and Crazy are the problems. Sometimes People don't even know they were born Stupid or Crazy. Pot doesn't make you stupid. People who are born stupid are the problems.
In a related Study.."It was found that people with psychosis ate cookies. It is not clear if the psychosis preceded the eating of cookies or if the cookies caused psychosis or if the psychosis caused people to eat cookies. " .... DON'T EAT COOKIES UNLESS THEY ARE MADE BY BIG PHARMA!
I wonder how many of you take prescription drugs? I bet a lot. Thank god I don't
America is the most prescribed country in the world. Pharmaceutical companies are LEGAL drug dealers supported by the Government. OHHH Please Jess. You actually believe another Human being with his studies. If you never smoke one you don't know what is going on.
Anyone ever think that people who are drunks might have psychosis and they sought relief from alcohol? And their psychosis is being covered via booze?
They put Codin or Valium in their cookies. LOL. you're hilarious man
Alcohol is a drug also but will not be recognized as such until all the important politicians are gone that were pickled in it..Sort of like releasing records 50 years after their death. If you remember right, certain ones of them broke the tobacco industry but never touched the whiskey industry except to tax it.The tobacco industr, for all of its mean things it did, helped build the best medical facilities in the country. If you check the figures more people die from car accidents than other causes.
Is it really hard to belive that a drug which alters mood and perception can have a link to mental disorders? Marijuana has over 4000 chemicals some of which can be mind altering. Our minds use chemicals and receptors to determen our mood and behavior. Pot heads will say anything to downplay the effects to justify thier use so it can fit thier bias agenda which is legalization. I have schizophrenia and I have no doubt marijuana played a role in me becoming ill. Not everyone that smokes weed gets schizophrenia and not everyone that gets schizophrenia smokes weeds. I do belive marijuana can be a catalyst for those that are suseptable.
I'm sure Chicken Soup has 4000 chemicals in it also. And yes, we are also aware that our brains have receptors. Thanks Josh!
Josh – That's the exact same logic that Jenny McCarthy used when claiming that vaccines cause autism. You don't want to think that it's just your own neurochemical makeup, so you're blaming any boogeyman you can.
I love the chicken soup thing. You are right on.They are not called yard buzzards for nothing.
Nonsense CNN. You are one horrible news agency. IIt cures cancer rather.
Also Known to cause Psychosis are Wives, husbands, bosses, kids, moms, dads, bills, relationships. tell me what doesn't cause Psychosis
POT !!!
Couldn't help but laugh at the fact that their were 420 responses when I entered mine!! LOL
I KNEW I shouldn't of inhaled..... Just kidding.
Dude, where's my car?!?
This is disgusting, hazardous, ridiculous, and intellectually poisonous.
Here's the question I guarantee CNN failed to ask: Marijuana use exploded in the 1960s, so why didn't cases of schizophrenia explode in the 60s?
Why? Because there is NO link.
Of course it causes psychosis. The drug companies don't make money unless you buy their medication, not a plant that's been around for thousands of years. The study clearly points to uncertainty, but the headline sure doesn't. We've got a pill for that...
I read the entire story, still don't understand this "link" they claim.
WHAT are you TALKING ABOUT???? ... Have all you people lost your minds??? If you're stupid enough to believe this then you'll believe anything... I can't believe they praised alcohol. Do you know how much worse alcohol is for you? MARIJUANA IS A MEDICALLY PRESCRIBED DRUG !!!!!! omg this article is so stupid and full of BS.
A little Cheech and Chong logic -– Tommy Chong " Hey man , if it brings the symptoms on quicker and at a younger age , dude , wouldn't that mean they would get treatment quicker and at a younger age man ??? " Cheech Marin " Heheheh , well man , it might but the psychotics that run this country don't believe in health care for all ! That's more messed up than buying a Ten Dollar lid over on Pico and finding out it's nothing but stems and seeds !!!! Tommy , " Hey man , you got any doughnuts left ??? ".
OK people who have psychosis (schizophrenia and bipolar disorder)need to use with caution. But please, leave my weed alone! The time to legalize is now!
THIS IS DISINFORMATION PLACED HERE BY THE GOVERNMENT BECAUSE THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH MARIJUANA.
WAR causes psicosis...When are you going to stop it?
How true, War has been causing soldiers major psychosis and they keep that going. We need to end these wars for corporate oil profit and legalize marijuana, Big Pharma are the real dangerous drug pushers.
Fascinating in- depth study. It may or it may not do something. Riveting reporting from CNN.
Well, let me see. How many people do you know that are in a mental hospital suffering from pychosis related to smoking weed? How many people do you know that are in a hospital suffering from psychosis from using prescription drugs (synthetic man made chemicals that can cause many side effects including death)? The pharmaceutical companies make way too much money to ever agree with the fact that marijuana can be a useful medication.
You have a point, but it is like asking whether dying by gun or dying by knife or natural causes is better. The end is the same for drugs no matter what kind they are, if used for the wrong purpose.
It would be nice to have them compare these results to folks who get prescription drugs, heavily use caffeine, are overweight, ect. Just saying I've met 100's of pot head over my life time, not saying they were the most productive people, but I didn't feel they were a danger to themselves or society and out of those 100 or so there was only maybe 2-3 that seemed "crazy" to me, but then those same 2-3 people also looked like they had done some heavier drugs in the past. Just saying if this study was true I would expect to see more "crazies" running around. The study doesn't seem to explain why those who don't use pot still go "crazy" it almost appears as if they counted the number of "crazies" then said ok how many of you used pot in your life then said ok X percent used pot so there must be a relationship. I didn't see controls mentioned on how much a person smoked before going "crazy". Did they smoke 1 time, several times a day, ect? Also wouldn't it seem reasonable that if one developed "crazy" symptoms from smoking pot that those effects would lessen once use had stopped? Also if this study is true wouldn't there be a direct correlation between the number of pot users in the USA to the number of people diagnosed with being "crazy"? Seems like they could just look at the estimated number of smokers and the estimated number of "crazies" over the years and compare the correlation- for if this is true every time pot use increases or decreased we should also see a rise or fall in the number of people diagnosed with being "crazy".
This is a revelation of the first magnitude.Wonder why it took so long to come to such a decision?
