Gardasil approved for anal cancerThere's a new tool in the fight against anal cancer. Gardasil, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine approved in 2006 to prevent cervical cancer got the green light Wednesday by the Food and Drug Administration for use in preventing anal cancer and other precancerous lesions caused by the virus. HPV is linked to approximately 90 percent of anal cancer. "Treatment for anal cancer is challenging; the use of Gardasil as a method of prevention is important as it may result in fewer diagnoses and the subsequent surgery, radiation or chemotherapy that individuals need to endure," said Dr. Karen Midthun, M.D., director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. The vaccine was approved for the same population, people 9 through 26 years of age. Merck and Co., Inc, Gardasil's manufacturer, tested the vaccine in men who had sex with men because of their high incidence of anal cancer. Merck says Gardasil was 78 percent effective in preventing infection in this population. Because anal cancer is the same disease in men and women, the data was used to support the indication in women too. "We are pleased that with this new indication for GARDASIL against HPV-related anal cancer and disease, both males and females can be protected against cancer, which further reinforces the importance of vaccinating both genders." said Dr. Richard M. Haupt, M.D., M.P.H., executive director, Merck Research Laboratories. But not everyone is on board with Gardasil. For years Judicial Watch, an organization that "promotes transparency, accountability and integrity in government" has been keeping a close eye on the number of adverse events reported to the FDA by consumers and health care providers who used the vaccine. "We would recommend that people go to our website, look at all the vaccine adverse events reporting system reports (VAERS)–FDA's own materials–and then make their own decision with their doctor," says Jill Farrell, Judicial Watch Spokesperson. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are more then 40 different types that affect the genitals. In 90% of cases the body clears the virus naturally, but certain types, particularly types 6, 11, 16 and 18 can cause various cancers and genital warts. The American Cancer Society (ACS) says anal cancer is still pretty rare–approximately 5,300 people are diagnosed with the disease each year. The majority of those are women. They say it's a serious disease but treatment is often very effective, and most patients can be cured. |

I really don't want to know how the vaccine's administrated, ugh.
There is this neat medical device, it's called a hypodermic needle and syringe. It's administered the same way nearly every OTHER immunization would be given.

I hate when they disguise advertisements as news. 1) Gardisil DOES NOT PREVENT CANCER as the article says! It is a vaccine against HPV and that is all. If you do the math, for women, you stand almost as likely a chance of dying from the vaccine as you do from it "preventing cancer", but that is so buried in their own statistics that no one questions it. HPV is not cancer. Only a few people who have HPV will develop cancer (cervical). As for the above "article", they DO NOT STATE (as with other treatment advertisements) the basis for their effectiveness claims, Shame on you CNN for advertising for a drug company under the guise of news !!!
Strains of HPV do cause cancer, including cervical cancer, anal cancer and head and neck cancer. So, check your self righteous indignation and learn something about it before telling CNN they ought to be ashamed.

For your information most causes of cervical cancer are caused by the HPV. I pray you read this post and increase your knowlege base regarding cervical cancer and encourage all young women in your life to get this wonderful preventive measure against cancer! know your medicine, and your vaccines, know your pharmacist! –pharmD
Where are the facts that Gardasil causes deaths? There are tons of bacteria/viruses that cause other things to develop, hpv is a direct link to cervical cancer, pneumococcal disease sometimes leads to deafness, diabetes sometimes leads to losing a limb. You have to see the science, you should not just make stuff up. You have to look at numbers, data. You can't just be emotional about it because you have something against vaccines/business/development/moving ahead/being creative/saving lives. Some people had to cradle and bury the 10 or so dead babies in California this year who have died from pertussis. So what is wrong with TDAP, where is the science against that? Has the rates of autism gone up or down after Thimerasol was taken out of vaccines. How is that possible? I thought Thimerasol caused autism. How come the rates keep going up? What happened to MMR and autism? Do you know the backstory on Dr. Wakefield?
Go tell Farrah Fawcett about how cancer isn't prevented. Hint, get a shovel, she died of anal cancer.
It's been WELL ESTABLISHED that certain cancers are virus induced. Cervical and anal cancers top on the list.
Some breast cancers are suspected to be caused by an unknown virus similar to murine papillomavirus.
Oops, I made the mistake of confusing the issue with silly little things like facts to someone who is against all vaccinations, claiming they're a big pharma conspiracy.
Which is why the US has nearly NO polio cases and unvaccinated nations and areas DO have polio epidemics...

Yeah, I'll be really sure to read the CDC's website to get my facts straight. While I'm at it, I will rely only on studies funded by the manufacturers of the vaccine. I am so informed!
Jimbo, you are all over the map. The higher rates of Pertussis are currently being linked to a more potent form of the bacteria making it's rounds, and killing infants and children who were vaccinated with all of their TDAP boosters, including infants who had none or just some. Plus, having the booster doesn't prevent adults and other children from passing it along to someone who wasn't immunized for it or who was and did not get immunity from it. Most cases of infants dying of whooping cough are in California, Texas and Ohio, but it is prevalent all over the U.S.
Thimerosal wasn't taken out of all vaccines, it was lowered in some and taken out of others. The study that purportedly shows no links to autism was conducted in Denmark, where the data was inconclusive but shown to be conclusive. The method by which autism was to be reported in that country had changed during the study, so of course a decrease was shown as people were not reporting them immediately following the change. That is not to say that MMR or any vaccine is or is not linked to autism. The studies funded by the CDC conducted in Denmark, Sweden, and a few places in the U.S. always show no link, while the studies done by the Griers (father and son) show that there is a link and the CDC is covering their errors. It is very difficult to say since there are literally 100s of chemicals that affect an infant in utero before it is even born, whether the mother is healthy or not, that come from the environment. It may be a case of whose immune systems can fight all things at once and whose cannot.
Valerie: The immune system fights germs, not chemicals. And I don't blame you for not trusting the manufacturer site, but the CDC knows a lot more about vaccines than you ever will.
Bill, the immune system fights anything it does not recognize, including the host's own body at times. And yes, I am sure that the CDC as a collective organization knows more than I ever will in my lifetime (although that could be said for any group of people), but as far as what they publish and the PR they put out I wouldn't doubt that they don't always give full disclosure.
Gardasil does prevent cancer.
Valerie – you are correct, the whooping cough outbreak is from a mutation. But it is affecting babies who have not had the vaccine yet.
Additionally, there is not just one study showing vaccines don't cause autism, there are about 500. From all over the world. NO connection.
kmcg, it is affecting babies who have and haven't had all shots for B. Pertussis. I even hear that there is a shot you can give your baby on its day of birth now.
As for Gardisil, you can read about all of the basic info on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardasil which can be considered factual as WP vets their info. It may take them up to a month to remove false info, but they do check every change that is made to the site. Gardisil protects against four known types of HPV, all of which contribute to the most cancers (as far as scientists are aware). I have read before on these comments sections for this specific vaccine that the reason they do not currently give it to women 26 and over is because at that point they expect you to have already been exposed to HPV. Even funnier is that he doesn't even need to stick it in her anus, as fluids full of these virus things tend to get splashed around and ooze around...

GD people can be so stupid. there are people out there who get anal cancers and they DON'T have anal intercourse. it may predispose you on cancer like smoking can predispose you to lung cancer, but it is not the end all and be all of HOW you get cancer. eatting red meat can predispose you to a higher risk of anal cancers as well. this doesn't JUST effect gay men. Viruses are not known for staying in the area they were deposited in. they have a way of moving around via the bloodstream. look at chicken pox. you get it and looong after the "pox" are gone it lives in your spine waiting to give you shingles and possibly blind you depending on which nerve it moves to.
The link for the adverse effects is NOT accurate. Please fix this! People should be able to see both sides of this issue. More importantly, why doesn't CNN report on the adverse events associated with Gardasil instead of only reporting on the positive effects.

The kind of HPV that causes anal warts (and thus sometimes cancer) does not live in the blood stream. It is spread via skin-to-skin contact. Condoms will not prevent this from occurring. This vaccine might be the only preventive measure we have against anal warts that can cause cancer, aside from abstinence.
Uh huh. First, condoms CAN prevent its spread. So can keeping little willie in your pants.
Now, we KNOW such things don't happen in life, so this is a life saver for women and men.

My favorite aunt died of cervical cancer. She was faithfully married to a merchant marine. Interestingly, even though HPV was a known cause of cervical cancer, her family doctor blamed her family smoking around her as the cause.
BTW, it only protects against 4 strains of HPV. I suspect they'll eventually come up with a vaccine that will protect against all strains.
Anon, I'd suggest you know what HPVstrains do before preaching. The strains that usually cause cancer are NOT the same as those that cause warts. Only very rarely do the warts become cancerous.

I thought the vaccine was only possibly effective for 4 out of 100 virus's that lead to cervical/anal cancer. I think I would prefer a vaccine, that is painful and you have to get four times, with a little better track record. But, koodo's for the lobbiest who fought for that earmark
the 4 strains it covers are responsible for something like 60 or 70 percent of warts and cancers.
Drug companies are big business just like anything else, everyone needs to do alot of research and make their own decisions about what you want to do to your body and who you want to trust with it. The amount of unnecessary drugs, vaccines, procedures, I shudder to think.

I don't understand how someone can go into journalism these days and not have spelling and grammar drilled into their heads. Maybe I just lucked-out getting the mean English teachers in elementary school; the ones that spent a week explaining the difference between 'then and than,' 'their, they're, and there,' where apostrophes go, how to use a semi-colon, and to never use a word you don't know or are unsure of, such as "refudiate."

Then we'll sue him when we end up getting sick because of our ignorance." Anyway. Most of the side effects for the drug are the same as with every other vaccine. I was actually a patient in the study before the drug was approved. I have also had HPV for approximately 15 years. This is a cruel virus that 1 in 4 people have. Most of the time they don't know it because they have no symptoms at all. Only once in 15 years have I developed any kind of indication of the disease. People need to make informed, responsible decisions. Quit blaming your indecisiveness on everyone else and quit trying to force your opinions on everyone else.
