Can a fat protect you from diabetes?

For those trying to eat a healthy diet, whole-fat dairy and trans fats are usually not on the menu — at least, not yet. Scientists have narrowed in on a trans fat component found mainly in dairy fat that may ward off type 2 diabetes and protect cardiovascular health. While the research is far from conclusive and requires much further study, it suggests fats may play a more complex role in human health than previously thought.

Researchers found that adults with high levels of a fatty acid (one of the main parts of fat molecules) called trans-palmitoleic acid in their blood had a three-fold lower risk for diabetes, according to a study published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. This naturally produced trans fat component is found mainly in dairy, as well as some meats. These subjects also had lower body fat, higher good cholesterol levels, and lower triglyceride levels, which are all associated with better cardiovascular well-being.

“It’s exciting because traditionally fats were just seen as artery cloggers, but they seem to be both harmful and protective,” said lead author and Harvard epidemiologist Dariush Mozaffarian. “The fatty acid world is becoming more interesting and complex.”

Little is known about trans-palmitoleic acid. In a 1970 study, nutritionists found it comprised only 0.2 percent of all dairy fats. Mammals actually don’t produce it naturally. Bacteria found in cattle make the fatty acid during digestion, and it eventually finds its way to their milk.

Mozaffarian and his colleagues grew interested in the fatty acid after examining a small body of evidence linking dairy consumption with lower diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk factors. “Because trans-palmitoleic acid is fairly unique to dairy, we knew if we found it in subjects there’s a good chance it came from eating some dairy product,” he said.

Analyzing blood samples and lifestyles of more than 3,700 adults 65 years or older, Mozzaffarian found that even when adjusting for various demographic and lifestyle differences, subjects with high levels of trans-palmitoleic acid or reported eating whole-fat dairy appeared to be in better shape than those who didn't. 739 people in the study had trans-palmitoleic acid at the highest protective level.  The acid was found in each person studied.

“This one of the strongest confirmations that there’s something in dairy fat that lowers risk of diabetes,” Mozzaffarian said.

That doesn’t mean you should put down the skim milk and reach for the half and half, however. Excess calories can lead to weight gain which, going unchecked, is a contributing factor in diabetes, heart disease and a number of other health problems.  This is only one study that does not show trans-palmitoleic acid or whole-fat dairy directly caused these differences. However, it's widely accepted that diets high in the saturated fats found in dairy products often lead to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

“We certainly know that eating a lot of saturated fat is associated with some bad consequences,” said American Diabetes Association Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Community Information Dr. Sue Kirkman. “This study is interesting, but people shouldn't conclude they should eat or drink high fat dairy products. It does, however, generate a great hypothesis for future study.”

Mozaffarian agrees. He hopes others will look further at trans-palmitoleic acid and it’s effects in the body. If trans-palmitoleic acid is found to guard against diabetes or cardiovascular disease, he envisions that maybe manufacturers can increase its concentration in dairy products or use it as a supplement.

“It's exciting because it might be able to reduce the epidemic of diabetes across the whole world,” Mozaffarian said. “But this is really new science, so we don’t want to oversell this. It could be a flash in a pan that turns out to not be correct.”

    This could be a reason why the DASH diet protected against high blood pressure, too. Goes to show physicians are about 50 years behind the research curve in nutrition. Consuming Fat does not cause heart disease or diabetis; it is refined carbs that kill. Stop eating processed foods filled with sugar and starch. "Low Fat" processed foods will kill you!

Yet doctors and American Diabetic Assoc has kept pushing carbs. Just look at the evil food pyramid. Pushed by Animal Rights Terrorists and wheat growers.

      Obesity and diabetes are less common in vegetarians. Apparently fresh fruit, vegetables, and whole grains aren't all bad. Sugar and processed foodss are bad whether you eat animals or not.

      BoB – just a quick reality check – the pancreas itself doesn't process fats, sugars or proteins, it just releases digestive enzymes into the lumen of the duodenum when these nutrients are present. Since the same stimuli (acetylcholine and CCK) release all of these enzymes, it really doesn't matter what dietary nutrients trigger the response and none could possibly damage the pancreas in the way you are suggesting. However, the source of this myth is that the pancreas can indeed be damaged by its own digestive enzymes in pathophysiological conditions like cystic fibrosis, when the enzymes are prevented from passing through the pancreatic ducts because they are blocked by a "sticky mucus". In a normal person this isn't an issue and it NEVER happens. Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story – there's always a conspiracy by some special interest group at the bottom of every problem – right?

      I don't get how the ADA can push so many carbs on a type 2 (like me). The minute I significantly lowered my carbs, my sugars went down. They spout 20-30 MG per meal, I eat no more than 5-10. Go figure!

      Probably becuase a strict vegetarian/vegan diet makes it difficult to eat McDonalds every meal. Trying to compare vegetarians to the average person is comparing apples to oranges, you're comparing a group that watches what they eat very carefully to a group that many of the members eat utter junk. It's like trying to compare runners against everyone else regardless if "everyone else" exercises or not; of course you'll conclude "running is the best form of exercise, because the runners were healthier than the other people".

      Eating a balanced omnivorous diet and not overeating will lower your risk of obesity and diabetes too.

      I believe the physiologist is a little confused. BOB wasn't referring to the pancreas' digestive impact, rather it's responsibility (for beta cells in the islets of langherhans) in producing and release of insulin and issues with over-producing insulin due to insulin resistance, etc.

    The problem I have with these studies is that the scientific/health community would constantly come out with contradicting pieces of -fat is good one moment and bad the next; this sort of diet is great one moment and bad the next; eating blah is great, then, the next year, the same blah is bad for you. No one knows what to believe anymore. EXtremely frustrating. I almost with they would just stop coming out with these new findings, or maybe limit them to scienctific or health magazines so the general public wouldn't be so confused. I know I am...

      You really need to watch where these studies are coming from. Most of the ones in the US are run by drug companies and can't really be trusted. Many from Sweden are pretty good, and those tend to all refute the "fat is bad" nutrition guide of the last few decades. Is it a coincidence that the rate of diabbetes has skyrocketed since scientists told us to stop drinking whole milk and cream? Maybe not...

      Also this article contradicts the study. Saying that excess calories from fat leads to weight gain goes directly against the study that said people who drink whole milk "had lower body fat." Come on. I am quoting your own article...

Low and non-fat items are a product of greedy people trying to make more money without killing us in the near term. Eat full fat items in moderation. They taste so much better, and as "so recently discovered", are good for you too.

      Yes, read the China study, then do some homework and realize that it used manipulated data to argue for a preconceived idealistic notion of vegetarian. Compare the rate of heart disease and obesity before and after its findings were accepted. Then put it in the trash where it belongs.

      Well scientists do find things everyday (some useful and some not). The reason why it is contradictory is because they all "work alone" (I mean in separate colleges; on top of separate labs) they "don't exactly collaborate" when they put out results. Not only that they are put on the spot to find results so they will pump out the newest result as fast as possible (without further testing or verification). Why are they put on the spot?... It is because they need grants to fund themselves and the next line of research. So if they do not produce something amazing or even "something," their research money is cut. This is bad for the scientist and his or her reputation. And thus you have this random crap being put out. I don't blame the scientist so much as the news writers who bring this journal publication to the public. The news writers should understand that this just a recent find and not something consistently proven to be true. So if you want to take your fustration out on someone it should be the one who wrote this article.

      Actually, scientists dont and cant afford to work "alone". They must communicate with each other as this is an essential part of the scientific method. Science progresses in small increments. It is mainstream journalists who jump on information, mangle and misinterpret what they read often to get headlines. Physicians are not scientists, BTW and their recommendations are generally based on tradition which is inherently conservative and rarely challenged beliefs. As somebody else suggested, who funds specific research can be extremely important. "Follow the money" applies.

    Here's a health tip you will never learn from these "studies": stay away from the processed food. They load it up with sugars, salt, and unnatural fats to make it taste better after sitting on a shelf. Bake using honey, season your own food, and stick to using natural fats in your cooking (this includes rendered animal fat; people ate it for thousands of years and our bodies are used to digesting it). It's a lot easier than you think to cut down, and it doesn't require slaving away all day in the kitchen either 🙂

      you are not correct about honey because a molecule of sugar is a molecule of sugar. honey is sugar with maybe some vitamins or minerals that the bees throw into it. i know some people who agree with you and use more honey than necessary thinking that it is OK for them.

    My parents were raised on fats like butter, lard and whole milk. They were big meat and potatoes eaters, too. They were very slender adults and both of them developed Type II diabetes in their fifties.

      Yes, they developed Type II diabetes in their 50's, after the Food Pyramid came out, their doctors got all over them about cholesterol, made them change their diets, and put them on Lipitor. Now they're unhealthy, their cholesterol is through the roof, they've lost half their memory, they're looking at potential insulin dependence, and they hate the plastic-and-cardboard crap the doctors and "nutritionists" make them eat.

      I went through the same thing. I was FINE. My cholesterol was so good, my doctor wanted it herself. The total was high, but the HDL/LDL balance was EXCELLENT. Then I went to a cardiologist and he panicked, and told me it was all TOO HIGH, and wanted to put me on statins, change my diet. So I did. Then I had an accident, had surgery, developed Type II as a post-surgical complication. So the diabetes coaches and nutritionists put the fear of God in me about my diet, and I changed it even more, cutting out all the fat and cholesterol. My numbers, instead of going down, went UP, and the balance went to hell. I gained 50 pounds, even eating the "healthy" crud they told me to. Finally, my cardiologist wanted me to go on Dean Ornish's diet. I told him to stuff it.

      I went back to eating real bacon, real eggs, whole milk and cheese, cut almost all the sugar, most of the refined carbs, try to stick to complex carbs. My A1C dropped from 9 to 5.5. I've lost that 50 pounds. My cholesterol is improving, and one doctor says the HDL/triglyceride balance is excellent. In other words, I went back to a diet my grandparents would have eaten, and I'm FINE. My glucose is even under control, if I don't cheat and eat something sweet. I stay away from sugar and don't snack after 10, my fasting level is under 115-130.

      And above all, I don't listen to the ADA and their idiocy regarding carbs. The last thing you feed a diabetic is carbohydrates. That's like tugging on Superman's cape - dumb.

    All people have to do is simply do what the Father of modern nutrition, Jack LaLanne did:
    "If man makes it, don't eat it". And exercise.

    If it's manmade, don't eat it.
    If it's nature made, eat it in moderation.

    And work out.
    You do this, YOU WILL NOT BE FAT and your chances of getting cancer or heart disease (that's not genetic) are MUCH reduced.

    This is one thing you can do to protect your family. DON'T BUY FOODS WITH HFCS!

    They were NEVER EXPOSED TO HFCS as kids, the MAIN CAUSE of T2D, and HIGHLY unlikely they drink milk at that age.

    Butter and (real) cheese are two of the most expensive items in the grocery store.

    "CONTAINS: HFCS and/or cane sugar." That tells you everything you need to know. HFCS contains MERCURY and goes

    Where are the studies approving this ARTIFICIAL HFCS SUBSTANCE for use as a FOOD PRODUCT? THERE WERE NONE!!

      high fructose corn syrup is basically half glucose and half fructose. Honey is basically half glucose and half fructose. Table sugar, once a little digestion takes place in the gut is, guess what, half glucose and half fructose. HFCS is a scapegoat for overeating, IMO.

    They show correlation but not causation. I'd like to see more data. It could be that the lucky subjects have a metabolism that both prevents the quick breakdown of this fatty acid as well as protects them from diabetes.

    It seems to me that the media and the medical industry really wants us all dead. This country is now at 29th place for "health". Of course, we SPEND a great deal more than anyone else. Study after study we're paying for as the increasing the obscene poverty rate of is 40% of us – and virtually all of the studies say "We need another study". Turn on the tube and you hear "Ask your doctor if this drug is good for you". Turn to news and you get "another miracle drug", or "diabetes is at epidemic rates in the poor" "the poor are the most obesity" "the poor are taking the most prescriptions drugs". What's wrong with this picture?

    Listen I watched an old guy spend 10am to 12 pm in a pub with nothing but a chips in a roll about 4-5pm then back for more beer for 20 years he has being doing this, the guys 85 and has been in the pub all his life, my parents tell me. still alive no special pills or rubbish just ALE?. maybe his booze flushes all the chemicals out and his smoking in bars for years stopped limited the CO2 intake, co2 air is the thing that that causes free radicals that kills your cells. Im on this guys track. Beer and tavern breezes all the way.

    Not a Physiologist but a Nurse and Surgical assistant with a high concentration in A&P, Chemistry and Bio. Just a quick reality check back at you. I agree when you say the Pancreas does not "process" fats, proteins etc. (directly).

    Bob made a mistake most non-professionals make. However, he does have merit in what he says as his contention does have basis and is centered around Insulin Resistance.

    Additionally, your statement: "the pancreas itself doesn't process fats, sugars or proteins, it just releases digestive enzymes into the lumen of the duodenum when these nutrients are present" is extremely myopic and horribly incomplete analysis, making Bob Boise's statement far more meaningful than that of what you have cited.

    The summarize, when sugars, carbohydrates, and other sources are in your blood stream it is the function of the Pancreas which produces beta cells in the Islets of Langerhans, thus stimulating the production of insulin to neutralize the sugars,carbohydrates.

    In contrast your statement about enzyme is much further off track than Bob's Physiology, since digestive enzymes are located in the oral, stomach and small intestine regions. You might want to test that "A Physiologist" label before submitting it for public consumption.

    It's great to see research being done on lipids. The nutritional mainstream has really destroyed the value of fats in the public consciousness over the last 30-40 years, which is truly unfortunate. The different ways in which various fats are processed by and benefit the human body is pretty amazing. Not to mention the gross dietary uses of fats as a buffer for blood sugar spikes and as a tool for inducing relatively long-term satiety. I hope that more research like this begins to change the minds of the general public away from thinking of fats as just "BAD" and that people begin to assess the different types of fats they consume and how they affect their bodies. Just like people are now familiar with the concept of "simple" and "complex" carbohydrates, hopefully over the next decade the general public will become more educated about various fats and grow more discerning in their choices of lipids.

      I can't remember if I read this in "Real Food" by Nina Planck or "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan, but in one of those books, the author is talking to a researcher or doctor; and they wouldn't stand up for their conclusion about the current advice being wrong. Why? Because it would essentailly be the end of their career. So there are doctors, researchers, nutritionists, and other experts out there that KNOW the current information is off-base, but they are all to worried about fitting in with the status-quo of information to push their findings.

      I find that rather sad. The American public has been grossly misled on what is "healthy", but very few of the experts are willing to speak up.

    Once you are diagnosed as being a diabetic, it will be for a lifetime.       Diabetes can be reversed, assuming you stop listening to conventional wisdom that grains (sugars) are the foundation of health. Your body does not need sugar! There are countless studies proving this.

    When it comes to a diabetic diet...eat the ‘good fats’. Foods such as fish...avocado...nuts and seeds contain beneficial fats. Omega 3 fats are particularly important because they have anti-inflammatory effects. High blood sugar levels and Insulin Resistance are associated with inflammation and therefore omega 3 can be helpful. Olive oil is the healthiest of oils in the kitchen.
