Split lip an injury known to many
The injury President Obama suffered Friday in a basketball game at the White House is well known to many of us. Dr. Tony Youn, a board certified plastic surgeon in Detroit, Michigan, said it’s the most common injury call he gets from the emergency room - someone gets smacked in the face and ends up with a cut lip. It usually happens when a tooth punctures the lip. “The lips are very sensitive to trauma and swell up quickly, more than any parts of the body,” he said. “When you get popped in the jaw, you don’t get a fat chin, you get a fat lip. The lips are so reactive.” The lips are made of mucosa, the moist tissue that makes them fragile (especially to a flying elbow). White House aides told CNN that Obama was given a local anesthetic while receiving the stitches and doctors used a smaller suture thread, or filament. That increases the number of stitches needed to patch up the tear, but it makes a tighter stitch so that the president's scar on his lower lip should be smaller. Dr. Laurie Casas, a clinical associate professor of surgery at the University of Chicago Pritzer School of Medicine, said that 12 stitches aren’t a lot, since each stitch can be as small as two to three millimeters. A deeper injury penetrating the muscle layer in the lip would require a more complicated stitch called a buried stitch, she added. Depending on whether the stitches are on the outer layer of the lip or deeper into the muscle, the stitches could be left in from five to 14 days. Stitches in the muscle layer of the lip would typically dissolve. The key for the plastic surgeon is that “you reconstruct the border of the lips called the vermillion border,” Casas said. That needs to be lined up first, so you don’t distort that border.” If they’re not lined perfectly, you could see a “cosmetic deformity,” said Dr. Marc Yune, a certified facial plastic surgeon in the greater Atlanta area. Obama can expect swelling and bruising for a couple weeks. And he, like many others with a severe lip lacerations may be told to stay on a liquid diet or avoid crunchy foods, to prevent a potato chip from slicing through the wound.

Dear me... CNN is so worried about ANYTHING being spun against Obama that they pre-emptively come out with these ridiculous articles to ensure no one makes anything of it. This is hardly news, relax CNN... Obama is fine.
You should probably tell everyone to relax, Andrew. Its every news station, not just CNN. In my opinion, thats why people are so against him, its not his policies, its the fact that the news media always reports his policies wront!

Personally, I want my president to take time to do things like play some basketball. Otherwise the stress of his job could get to him, which is not only a problem for his health but also a problem for his job performance, which I think we can all agree is pretty important. So, no, I will not be complaining about him playing basketball or golf once in a while, both because I realize it helps relieve stress and also because I don't complain about everything he does in the first place.

I don't understand the point of most of the comments posted here. This has nothing to do with racial agendas, politics, caring about the president, house bills or Korea. It is a health article about a common injury a lot of people receive (including me). Many health articles have famous people as the lead in. That is what this article is folks, nothing more, nothing less. CNN DOES do articles on health. Judging from many of the comments posted in this column CNN needs to do an article on mental health also.

It's even posted in health, I doubt they intended for this to be a major article. They are just trying to be thorough, if every other media site has the article they will most likely too.

If CNN wanted to mature on its news reporting and in turn help the president and the WORLD to cut back on nonsense and other mayhem that is happening. they should report news stories that promote world advancement...let this dumb world in on some information that might help develop future prosperity...Right now we are pretty much stagnant unless one counts improvments in cellphones as nationally important advancement. Grow up CNN! You certainly need to do that!

This is so funny – the media are so desperate to not allow Obama to seem like a clumsy goof, they have to print this obvious article about how "common" Obama's lip injury is. We all know that it is, but because most CNN personnel have never played a sport and are used to mocking conservative presidents for their physical injuries, they had to circle around and do something to protect the president from some fear of a public backlash of mockery. I don't know any conservative who is joking about the president's lip – but since Libs do this sort of mocking all the time, they assume everyone does.
The article is a heath article, yet because it's about Obama, many of you shamefully jump on your NO train, ranting about your twisted misconceptions of America and the world. If you're so concerned about the state of things, get off your computers and do something about it! As trivial as this story is, there is no way Obama appears on television with an unexplained split lip, and it becomes a smaller story than this one. The guy who really cracks me up is the guy who appreciates some lighter news to break up the doom and gloom. I sure don't think it's the job of the MSM to moonlight as a pharmacy, which is not to say that there aren't good reasons for some light reporting now and then.

I think its cool that our President has time to inwind. Basketball is great exercise and he is under a lot of pressure to "fix" the mess that was left for him from our previous president. So if he is injured, there are some people that would like to know about it, even though its only a busted lip! Big props for President Obama:)
