Different touch urged for young cancer patientsDoctors need to recognize that young cancer patients are different from older individuals. To help, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) launched a new program on Wednesday designed to help educate physicians on how to better treat this patient population. The program, called Focus Under Forty, is a joing effort between LIVESTRONG and ASCO. It teaches oncologists how to improve treating cancer patients between the ages of 15 and 39. Cancer is the leading disease-related cause of death for adolescents and young adults, with about 70,000 new diagnosis expected each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The survival rates for this age group have not improved in the last 30 years, according to ASCO. There are many challenges with treating this age group. Patients don't always have health coverage or it's limited. Delays in diagnosis are common due to the rarity of each cancer type and the vast range of diagnosis types with this population. Some oncologists focus on saving a patient's life before they take into account what a patient's quality of life will be as a survivor. This can lead to things like fertility and preservation options not being fully explored. Lack of support is also an issue with this age group, with relationship challenges or lack of a support group being common. "LIVESTRONG and ASCO share a mutual desire to improve the treatment and survival rates for this long forgotten demographic," Andy Miller, LIVESTRONG executive vice president says in a statement. The National Cancer Institute has been with working with Lance Armstrong's Foundation to determine the issues facing young adults with cancer, however, this new program is geared more towards educating oncologists on the unique needs of these patients. "This is an area of cancer where ASCO and LIVESTRONG can combine our strengths to drive increased awareness for doctors and improved outcomes for patients who are in the prime of their lives," ASCO president Dr. George W. Sledge, ASCO says in the statement. |

A very exciting article to see. The 30-something cancer family feels like it falls into a black hole. Check out http://cancergaveme2birthdays.blogspot.com – to hear the open and honest story of a 30-something cancer survivor (my wife). The blessings of understanding oncologists and the NIH were truly priceless. Good luck and many blessings to this initiative.
Very happy for you! The kids with cancer break your heart (as a pediatric oncology RN I've seen far too many 16 year-olds die whom I've already outived by 12 years) cancer is rare in the young but many of these cancers are quite deadly...at age
28 I can't complain about anything knowing what a gift just being healthy is. We do all need to help victims of cancer and when people ask me how I can possibly do this job the answer is easy...if no one cared there would be no healthcare providers for them but it really is heartbreaking far too often to comfort the parents of a 5 y/o; I get home & hug my daughter.
As for our 'stellar' healthcare system the teenagers who pull through will be bankrupt before they acquired there 1st credit card. The US should be ashamed of our 'for profit' healthcare system...I know I am.
Take Vitamin D3 and Vitamin C
I don't smoke either and i am not near smokers hardly ever. it's not from smoking.
those of you saying to 'eat this or that' just stop. If eating veggies cured cancer we'd all be doing. Saying someones diet causes their cancer is blaming. I did everything 'right' as far as diet and health. My cancer was not my fault and no amount of mushrooms was going to make it go away. Until you are faced with cancer and all the decisions that go with it it would be best to be quiet. Eat your own damn mushrooms.
Well said, few things annoy me more than blaming the victim because they were not 'cured' by veggies or caused by lack thereof. momto4 is right and what hubris you show! If veggies "cured' cancer it would be cured. I must wonder what type of mushrooms you ingest in order to make such an ignorant comment.
Excellent statement momto4. People who don't know, pretend that they know and for those of us with cancer who do know exactly what are life is like now and what it used to be liked before cancer are highly offended by those who suggest that we caused this or that God did and has a lesson in it for us, or because we don't believe we are healed somehow it is our fault the cancer isn't wiped out....just to name a few of the things I hear others say.....who don't know what the heck they are talking about. Or they want to tell us gory stories of others lives ending because of cancer and to how that is supposed to help is just beyond me.
I have a good support system and those close to me don't tell me these idiotic things...It is just annoying there are so many out there who want to share their ignorance with cancer patients and think it is helpful.

We need to do all we can to help victims of cancer....
I am a cancer survivor myself but suprise to the facts that there's not much effort on the research on cancer prevention. If we focus on knowing the cause then we can prevent it and don't have to worry much about treatments. My personal opinion is that there's no money to be made in prevention compared to treatments. But, I think we have an obligation to do what's right and not all about money to be made. This is the time we need to focus on prevention, it's our health.
The contrary: preventing cancer is making some people very rich. As a woman at high-risk breast and ovarian cancer, I get more than $4,000 in screenings a year and had a $3,000 BRAC DNA test (now they're advertising on TV... amazing). For who knows how many 10s of thousands of dollars I could have preventive surgery and a reconstruction that would have to be periodically tended to for the rest of my life, plus continued screenings anyway. Great article in the New Yorker recently about how cancer prevention is making cancer a part of more people's lives, even if the cancer itself is part of fewer people's lives. The article didn't touch on the money issue (or the age issue, but this also makes cancer your problem from before birth instead of when it crops up in the future), but it's also spreading the money around.
as the wife of a under 40 cancer survivior the pain and problems can really begin after "beating" it. The personality is different they have food they wont go near because the chemo made then throw up they are constantly weak and flustrated. Dizzy spells are common. My husband walks on a cane to keep balance. They will throw "I survived so i can do anything i want" in your face more times than you can count and everyone tell you want they should eat or do. We are still paying the bills from treatment. Your own sanity from the ordeal gets shakken and your are reduced to tears when they get a cold., Sometime you will ask yourself when will it be over, when is the helpmate's pain is over. So i am very glad that are starting to have a different mindset for the under 40 crowd and hopeful for the spouses too.
My lung growth in my right lung did clear up from the can of mushroom treatment. And i didn't have to use a puffer for coughing for two days now. But the disease is still in my chest. and still obstructing breathing in a different way. i had another can of mushrooms but it didn't take effect because i ate other food and had tea as well at the same time. I beleive that is why. I have to try again. theresa noelle younan ymma-iii i-pic y-research management
I was also analyzing whether it may be a parasitic long wormy type activity moving around in my system having started in my liver as three cysts. that does happen as well along with the other problems of smaller big bug t.b. involved parasitic diseases. Scientifically speaking t.b. is a parasite and not a disease. flu bacteria most of the time and virus illnesses are diseases but those others are part of the parasitic invasion illnesses and i thought maybe deworming medicine is what should be taken regularly same as cats are dewormed. as a child i had to take deworming medicine because of a parasite typically found in lamb. There is a treatment called aekinasia (sp.) which they market as a cure for all kinds of growths and such but i beleive it is just a deworming concoction medicine and maybe they and others like them are blackballing treatment of this type of health problem through regular doctoring channels so they can push push push that herbal line thinking remedy group. they do that with vitamin marketing activity as well. i don't know who owns those pharmacuetical area products either. In beef type meats where you end up chewing grissle meat material is where there was a tuberuli growth or parasite invasion in the beef. That area of the meat on reheating of leftovers gives off a spoiled meat taste. there is no grissle in chicken but that meat sometimes gets tainted with salmonella type disease. theresa noelle younan ymma-iii i-pic interpole galactica y-research management
On referral by my chinese doctor to the organ surgery specialist in London at the University of Western Ontario Hospital Dr. ..Grant told me it was parasite type growths in my liver, where it was ultrasound located, but he said that there are so many blood vessels and such and to operate would be more problems. But there is medicine for it but he and others wouldn't perscribe anything for it. with regards to leftover meat reheating that is just on the second day. i know the vets aren't treating farm animals for this type and other diseases at all. theresa noelle younan ymma-iii i-pic interpole galactica y-research management
There is no sense in switching to vegetarianism because from the cattle manure and such that gets into the soil it and many other ways it ends up in the water as well. And they've reduced chlorinization some years ago because some idiots got on their high dog horse that chlorine was harmful. It is the WARSFIC issue i summarized it as War on/against Real Science Fiction Infestation and Contamination – was science fiction now its real. the africa issue is everywhere. water water everywhere but not a drop to drink. toxic/other waste has killed more than taste.
Yeh and they have a big investment going in cutting hair for donations and making other wigs for those who lose their hair from chemo and radiation and similar needs that result from not treating the disease/whatever as what it is. Especially all that research for cancer cure garbage running into every which alley and street you live on. theresa noelle younan ymma-iii i-pic interpole galactica y-research. they keep making slaves to fund raise and do social cause activity that includes raping children and stealing from honest money people. i guess almost everyone would have some kind of aids pope benedict that condoms wouldn't really be any good for because they all got multiple raped on from their infancy almost. you know that too i'm sure.
If you rape abuse and harrass a child enough i guess it would have Attention Deficit Disorder ATD when it went to your sleaze operation schools to try and get an education in i don't know what really. theresa noelle younan ymma-iii i-pic interpole galactica y-research management.
They've also snuck contaminants of poison ivy types into hair dye – 1st the black type i was using, then others brunettes were using. I know this because if you went to the hair dresser they had dye that didn't make you allergic. They pretended it was a henna dye but that's a con conspiracy because they henna i bought from a salon supplier and elsewhere didn't dye hair it just highlighted it. Their henna was just a non-contaminated black and other dye. theresa noelle younan ymma-iii i-pic interpole galactica y-research management.
The object of the hair dresser affection game is to visit them every week and get your hair done for $30or more for dye and styling. Now if you're in toronto or new york that may cost over $80.00 maybe up to $120. plus you'll want manicures and such and recently they added spas. Then there's the tip but if it's a gay hairdresser they'll expect extra large tip because he's a special kind of bitch. He figures he's better than the girl hair dressers. theresa noelle younan ymma-iii i-pic interpole galactica y-research management
Somebody shut that blathering idiot up! That rambling discourse makes no sense!
