How and why to practice compassion meditation

Editor's note: Video produced by Brandon Ancil. Shot by Jarrett Bellini and Mandy Carranza.

This week The Chart and CNN's Belief blog take a closer look at meditation, its varied forms and its physical and emotional benefits.

Like many Buddhists, Lobsang Tenzin Negi insists that a person doesn’t don’t have to be Buddhist to benefit from meditation.

Meditation: Focus on now

“It's a simple training by which you enhance certain skills like compassion, attention, love – you train again and again to get better,” he says.

How to get Zen at your desk

Many Westerners have discovered focused-attention meditation, during which the practitioner focuses on a single object, often the breath, for a set period of time in an attempt to cultivate powers of concentration. For more tips, check out CNN's Belief blog.

Meditation is not the same as prayer. It has nothing to do with religion. It exercises the mind the same way that we go to a gym and workout to exercise the mind. The results of both are important.

I have meditated for several years and I still find it helpful to have some sort of guidance during the meditation session. Not always, but on those days that my mind is wondering I do find it useful. The site http://www.transcendentaltones.com has great resources for this. They have 2 short guided meditations for free download: one for beginners, where the attention is focused on your breathing, and one for advanced students, where the work is with self-affirmations, all in english and in spanish. They also have sounds of nature tracks that last between 20 and 40 minutes. Perfect for a longer meditation, a massage session, or even to put in your living room and relax. The site is worth a visit, I highly recommend it.

It would be great, what with all the news on bullying, to hear something about a link between bullying (victims and perpetrators both) and compassion meditation. thanks to cnn, i now know about compassion meditation. i've practiced tm, but as a grown woman still traumatized by memories of being bullied, i found compassion therapy to have real "breakthrough" properties. more, please!!

I'm curious to find out what blog system you're utilizing? I'm having some small security problems with my latest blog and I'd like to find something more secure. Do you have any suggestions?
