Teacher's union fights for Viagra

In the time of major budget crunches and layoffs in education, a teacher’s union in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is fighting for the right to Viagra.

From CNN’s affiliate WISN: “The union claims that some teachers could be discriminated against by not having the drug covered by insurance.”

The station also reports that the Milwaukee school system is about $30 million in debt. Erectile dysfunction pills cost about $20 to $25 a pop - that most insurance companies do not provide coverage.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported: “In 2008, the teachers' union filed a charge with the state's Equal Rights Division, complaining that not offering the drug violated the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act.”

Milwaukee parents aren’t quite so sympathetic about the plight of the male teachers and their erectile needs.

"It's a waste of time, let's spend time on the kids," said Deon Patton, who has children enrolled in Milwaukee Public Schools, told WISN.

Some of you guys are really dense. Gee, there never seems to be such a controversy when discussing female medications of this nature. It's pretty disgusting for some of you to dismiss or even make fun of impotency. It's a troubling medical condition that can have really negative effects on all those involved. You mean to tell me that the birth control pill is a more legitimate medical expense? Talk about a double standadr, blantant sexism.

Most liberals need these pills judging by their low birth rate.

An Enhanced Well Being can only come from within you – it is a product of your own thoughts. No pill can give it to you. These unions are going to be the total downfall of our nation. Did you know that in order to get a government contract to fix or build anything, your workforce must be labor union members? As an example, these labor unions get paid as much as four times what the average non-union carpenter or plumber makes. This drives the cost of the building up by a multple of FOUR over a non-union project. We drove down the highway in California today and watched as four men were standing around watching a man operating a backhoe. I could see maybe one or two standbys in case of a problem, but FOUR? This is a regular occurrence. These are government employees, labor union members. Yes, the employes of the State of California belong to a union, and just the cost alone of their retirement benefits alone is enough to bankrupt our State government.

"what has viagra and erection got to do with teaching school ?"

This would make sense in a Catholic school because they are full of glory holes.

Please tell me this a real story, not just someone screwing with the public. We have children who cannot get proper healthcare attention, and teachers are worried about getting laid. This brings the meaning of "My teacher has a hard-on for me" to a whole new level.

    From Mayo Clinic
"Epidemiologic studies have suggested that men with a higher frequency of ejaculations may have a slightly lower risk of prostate cancer."
So who is to say Viagra doesn't help prevent the NUMBER 2 KILLER OF MEN....besides, even if insurance pays anything, it has the highest deductible, so you might save $20 bucks...boy that is going to break the bank!

Shoot... the money spent on Viagra as a "union" required benefit would be better spent on teacher pay or classroom books or repairing buildings.

Hey you ever wonder what happens to those loud mouth, disruptive unteachable students....nothing.....they grow up to be the same...just adults.
This is just sensationalism journalism used to bash unions...how many other professions could you find where insurance does pay for Viagra....child care, law enforcement, judiciary, medical employees....on and on. Teachers are just easy target...but I'm not sure why everyone seems to be attacking them lately?
Nurses without unions are getting the shaft daily...mandatory time off, mandatory on call without compensation, mandatory overtime, fired because "they are going to get rid of all the old bit..hes"....that is why unions are needed.
If you look at the history, unions actually caused employers to start offering insurance because they didn't want to give unions a attractive benefit so the companies started providing insurance themselves!

It may be true that most insurance plans don't cover Viagra, but most big ones do. I know a large local insurer recently had to cover birth control pills. Why? Because they had been covering Viagra, and it's hard to deny contraceptive coverage and not look like a fool if you're going to cover medicine for erectile dysfunction.

Based on my latest property taxes of which over 45% goes to the public school tax, the teachers should be picking up a larger portion of their medical expenses....No sympathy here.

Chances are your property assessments are wrong and you actually pay very little towards the eductation of kids in your community. Lower health care premiums would fix the problem. Instead you choose to blame teacher's without understanding the problem. No sympathy for ignorance.

I don't understand why so many people seem to think that Viagra only treats ED. What about the people who want Viagra for congestive heart failure?

I'll grant that it's likely that most people who take Viagra are taking it just for ED. But some people have had their lives extended because of Viagra. I don't think it's at all funny to joke about people who are actually ill.

Here's an idea. Take the f***ing patents they paid scumbag neocon politicians to have forever away from the pharmecutical companies that have their d***s up the @55es of all you ignorant, latently g@y, white trash, sick, childish, lazy, idiots complaining about unions and the teachers who struggle to teach your half-retarded, b00ger-eating dumb@55, kids. Now it's the teachers union in b**fu*k Wisconsin that's the source of all of your problems, not your owners that can get away with spending not only your stock investments on golden toilets and European castles, but now even your f***ing tax money, while you bend over like morons and believe whatever they send "trickling down" your chin. I'm no teacher, I'm nowhere near Wisconsin, and I have no interests in ths, but I've never seen a bigger bunch of @55h0les who needed to get l@id more in my life than on this forum. F*** all of you up your bitter, candy @55es.

Viagra is a drug that if needed, is almost always paid for by the user because insurance companies will not pay for it because it is so expensive. If we have to pay for it so should the unions. Unions are a scourge in this society, promote mediocrity and make the service or product more expensive. Don't get me wrong, everyone should make decent buck, but if all you have to do is turn a wrench or push a button on an assembly line, you are worth bout 10 bucks an hour and medical bennies. The UAW members get paid 50-100K a year for working on an assembly line with robots. Please explain to me what is so hard about that and why do they get paid so much? Teachers get 38-100K a year and kids cannot read. IF teh kid cannot pass the standardized test, then the teacher did not do their job and should not get a raise. Enough of these unions. There are plenty of laws on the books to address labor issues. Unions are no longer needed and union members are greedy, lazy people.

Thank you Ian. If 98% of americans were union then 98% of americans would have health insurance and retirement. Thanks to the unions some of your non-union companies provide these things just to keep workers. Unions are not perfect, but I have benefits and a decent wage.

Cut teachers pensions by 25% to 50%.
The money we pay should be to educate the children not support EX-teachers who are retired.

I believe a reasonable pension is ok but no teacher should get more than $40k per year in retirement.

No wonder our education system is going down the toilet.

We are paying for all these teachers PENSIONS. REDUCE Teacher PENSIONS NOW.

Who gets the money , teachers or just the unions.
    $13,000 a year ?
Most of the teachers , er maybe i should say education administrators are geting $50K and above.

It does sometimes seem that it is the unions and administrators who are taking the money.

Maybe you teachers need to vote the unions out, or at least accountable.

I can count on one hand the teachers my son has had up till now, (he's a sophomore this year) that were awesome. I say up till now because I'm holding out hope he'll have another few in the next three years. But it is a fact that the MPS system is the worst in the state of Wisconsin, and they are upset that their insurance doesn't cover viagra? Really??? I'm
thinking they should be a little more concerned how they are going to get their students up to par in the testing they are required to do. Yes it may be a challange, but is that not why they became a teacher in the first place??? I didn't become a teacher because I didn't want the responsibility of it, but they chose this profession, so it's time they step up to the plate. My cousin is a teacher, and she's embrassed when her teachers strike because of this or that changing in their contract. She knows what she's got, (good salary, awesome benefits, etc) so please people, lets get real here. My God....

Dan...that pr]ortion of your property tax of your property that youo say you are paying to school tax dosent come any where near paying for your kids education...if you own house worth 200.000 you prabably are only paying about 700 or less for the school tax portion of your total property tax...it cost 10.000 per year to cover the cost of your kids education...if you have 2 kids in school you are talking 20k a year to pay for their education. add it up and with your current school tax and you will find that you have one hell of a good deal for your kids schooling.

No wonder these states are cash-strapped, now we know what they're spending our tax money on. No wonder kids are not learning in school and passing the tests, teachers can't concentrate on teaching.

Teachers have great pay, (stop complaining, you don't work year round and make more than many who do), great retirement, benefits and they get to b*^$ch and complain all the time about how hard life is for teachers, and don't get me started on tenure, what a load of crap. I hate the way teachers think they deserve so much more than MOST American workers get and that includes highly educated individuals. Buy your own viagra and shut up and stop complaining.
