What is Glenn Beck's eye disorder?
Fox TV personality Glenn Beck announced last week that he has an eye disorder known as macular dystrophy and “could go blind the next year." Beck began to cry during the speech at his “American Revival” tour in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday. “I know what my wife looks like,” he said. “I know what my children look like. I have a great imagination. I know what color looks like. But I love to read.” Beck, 46, then joked, “I thought to myself I’m too darn lazy to learn Braille.” He said he was having trouble focusing his eyes and went to a doctor. Macular dystrophy can be a confusing term, because it’s used broadly and interchangeably with several diseases including macular degeneration, a common cause of blindness for Americans over the age of 60. For someone at the age of 46, the macular dystrophy Beck referred to could be hereditary forms of retina damage, said Dr. David DiLoreto, assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, who is not involved in Beck’s care. There are several forms, including pattern dystrophy, adult vitelliform degeneration and dominant drusen. Their symptoms are very gradual, mild and often painless. The early signs could be tiny blind spots, inability to distinguish objects at a distance or waviness in vision. “It makes it difficult to perceive small objects such as reading,” said Dr. Mina Chung, an associate professor of ophthalmology, who researches retinal imaging and genetic eye diseases at the University of Rochester. “In early phases, it can be very mild, with trouble distinguishing fine targets. In later phases, it can cause legal blindness.” The macula, which is the center part of the retina is damaged. Usually, macular dystrophy in adult onset cases does not cause complete blindness, but it could be “very disabling,” she said. Macular dystrophy is rare compared with the more common macular degeneration, which affects at least one in 10 Americans over age 65. Scientists have yet to identify the gene behind macular dystrophy and a cure is not available. Beck credited his religion for helping him cope. "After I stopped feeling sorry for myself, I truly came to a place which is the greatest blessing: Lord, if you need my eyes, they're yours. They were yours the whole time anyway. While I wouldn't touch Glen Beck with a 10-foot pole, I would never wish such an ailment on him. I think he's a very ignorant, frightened little man who used his strange, charismatic and attention-grabbing (whether that be positive or negative) personality to find a little spotlight on one of the most corrupt network news stations in the world. Now, while I'm sorry he seems to be faced with an unfortunate prognosis, he could have it much worse. Millions of Americans have it much worse, and they might not get the same health care opportunities that Beck has.
Let's take away HIS insurance and then let him tell us just how "socialist" Obama's health care plan is.
Unfortunately, Mr. Beck does not need health insurance with all the millions he make per year.

What a shame that people in this country can't rally around a common belief that we are all entitled to those beliefs, without the need to be ridiculed or belittled for them? If you don't like Glenn Beck, don't listen to him, and don't belittle those of us who do. Furthermore, he must be doing something right if all of you that wish him to die or lose his ability to talk took time out of your day to post a comment. I wish him well, even if I don't agree with everything he says. Yes, he is self-absorbed, yes, he has ways of convincing people he is right, but he works in the MEDIA, that's his job. Get over it.

Uh, I don't know which Bible you consider the "REAL" Bible, but Mormons read, carry, and teach from the King James version (which they did not write).They of course have other books that they also accept as scripture, but I just thought you should know the facts.

Man you've got all sorts of issues. First off, who gave you the right to belittle a religious group? Regardless of what Mr. Beck decides to believe does not constitute lumping all "morons" into a category. What you are is a bigot, and an arrogant, pompous one at best. This REAL Bible you refer to was nothing more than a translation of the original Bible from a language that hardly any spoke at the time anyway, which is why King James had it translated anyway. Or do you have the original copy of the Bible? If you did your research, you would know that the Mormon belief isn't drastically different than any other Christian belief. True there are fundamental differences, but you didn't research that, did you? As far as foreclosures, you also neglected to check your stats. Last I checked the economic downturn wasn't brought about by the Mormons' inability to hold onto their houses, it was perpetuated by EVERYONE struggling. And who cares if they have more than average family sizes? The Duggars aren't Mormon, you have a problem with their 19 kids? That being said, you're probably impotent anyway, so you're just jealous that they are able to procreate while your family tree will shortly end, but then again that's probably a good thing for the rest of us that DO our research before shooting off at the mouth.

I wish he had the SAME medical ins. that I have -NONE-since I lost my job, ran out of Cobra and can't even find a part time, mim. wage job let alone one thats full time w/benefits. I offer Glenn Beck all the compassion, love, and kindness he has shown for anyone who disagrees with his continuing idiocies. Maybe "God's myserious ways" – as one poster here referred to them – are a way to make a man who has been truly blind to anything but his own wacked-out opinions, blind in a physical sense as well. Maybe Rush Windbagh can loan him a little oxycontin to help him relax.

If any of you had listened to Beck regularly, you would have noted that he was one of the few voices warning of the impending economic collapse that we have and are now experiencing. The current reprieve Is just a house of cards being propped up by a bankrupt government who happen to be liberals.

What really bothers me though is by his own admission he's merely an entertainer(a "clown" per his words) yet he has a following that actually thinks he's intelligent if not prophetic. What were his prophesies during the Bush years? Did he ever mention the word malfeasance in the same sentence as George Bush. Did he ever use the word at all during the period 2000-2008???If not, what kind of prophet could he ever be? you mean there's a LOT of anecdotal evidence, most of which has been misinterpreted or outright misrepresented by the religious right. Were the Founding Fathers all members of the Christian faith? Yes. Did they intend for the United States to be guided solely by the principles of that faith? NO, THEY DID NOT. Any respected historian will tell you the same thing.
