What is Glenn Beck's eye disorder?

Fox TV personality Glenn Beck announced last week that he has an eye disorder known as macular dystrophy and  “could go blind the next year."

Beck began to cry during the speech at his “American Revival” tour in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday.

“I know what my wife looks like,” he said. “I know what my children look like. I have a great imagination. I know what color looks like. But I love to read.”

Beck, 46, then joked, “I thought to myself I’m too darn lazy to learn Braille.”

He said he was having trouble focusing his eyes and went to a doctor.

Macular dystrophy can be a confusing term, because it’s used broadly and interchangeably with several diseases including macular degeneration, a common cause of blindness for Americans over the age of 60.

For someone at the age of 46, the macular dystrophy Beck referred to could be hereditary forms of retina damage, said Dr. David DiLoreto, assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, who is not involved in Beck’s care.

There are several forms, including pattern dystrophy, adult vitelliform degeneration and dominant drusen.

Their symptoms are very gradual, mild and often painless. The early signs could be tiny blind spots, inability to distinguish objects at a distance or waviness in vision.

“It makes it difficult to perceive small objects such as reading,” said Dr. Mina Chung, an associate professor of ophthalmology, who researches retinal imaging and genetic eye diseases at the University of Rochester. “In early phases, it can be very mild, with trouble distinguishing fine targets. In later phases, it can cause legal blindness.”

The macula, which is the center part of the retina is damaged. Usually, macular dystrophy in adult onset cases does not cause complete blindness, but it could be “very disabling,” she said.

Macular dystrophy is rare compared with the more common macular degeneration, which affects at least one in 10 Americans over  age 65.

Scientists have yet to identify the gene behind macular dystrophy and a cure is not available.

Beck credited his religion for helping him cope. "After I stopped feeling sorry for myself, I truly came to a place which is the greatest blessing: Lord, if you need my eyes, they're yours. They were yours the whole time anyway. Thank you for letting me see as far as I have.”

  2. The blind leading the blind...spot on.

While I wouldn't touch Glen Beck with a 10-foot pole, I would never wish such an ailment on him. I think he's a very ignorant, frightened little man who used his strange, charismatic and attention-grabbing (whether that be positive or negative) personality to find a little spotlight on one of the most corrupt network news stations in the world. Now, while I'm sorry he seems to be faced with an unfortunate prognosis, he could have it much worse. Millions of Americans have it much worse, and they might not get the same health care opportunities that Beck has.

Let's take away HIS insurance and then let him tell us just how "socialist" Obama's health care plan is.

Unfortunately, Mr. Beck does not need health insurance with all the millions he make per year.

Don't you think accusing the President of lying about his place of birth, religion and political affiliation is a "personal attack"? Don't you think calling Obama a socialist, marxist, Muslim, baby-killer is a personal attack? Where do you think this all started? I'll tell you. It started with the Republican convention in 2008 and then ran through the entire campaign. The name calling began even before Obama was inaugurated. The problem with you is that you're so brain-washed that you've lost touch with reality.

What a shame that people in this country can't rally around a common belief that we are all entitled to those beliefs, without the need to be ridiculed or belittled for them? If you don't like Glenn Beck, don't listen to him, and don't belittle those of us who do. Furthermore, he must be doing something right if all of you that wish him to die or lose his ability to talk took time out of your day to post a comment. I wish him well, even if I don't agree with everything he says. Yes, he is self-absorbed, yes, he has ways of convincing people he is right, but he works in the MEDIA, that's his job. Get over it.

All Morons (mormons) are serving a false god. They took the REAL bible and the true God's words and wrote them to please their own agenda.....which of course is "mass reproduction" and perversion. They'll all go down one at a time, most of them are going broke as they get their homes foreclosed with 6 to 8 mouths to feed. The true God is showing Glenn Beck who is really in charge and how wrong he's been to misinform the masses of ignorant people that think he is someone important or actually has a brain.

Uh, I don't know which Bible you consider the "REAL" Bible, but Mormons read, carry, and teach from the King James version (which they did not write). They of course have other books that they also accept as scripture, but I just thought you should know the facts.

      Jim,
Man you've got all sorts of issues. First off, who gave you the right to belittle a religious group? Regardless of what Mr. Beck decides to believe does not constitute lumping all "morons" into a category. What you are is a bigot, and an arrogant, pompous one at best. This REAL Bible you refer to was nothing more than a translation of the original Bible from a language that hardly any spoke at the time anyway, which is why King James had it translated anyway. Or do you have the original copy of the Bible? If you did your research, you would know that the Mormon belief isn't drastically different than any other Christian belief. True there are fundamental differences, but you didn't research that, did you? As far as foreclosures, you also neglected to check your stats. Last I checked the economic downturn wasn't brought about by the Mormons' inability to hold onto their houses, it was perpetuated by EVERYONE struggling. And who cares if they have more than average family sizes? The Duggars aren't Mormon, you have a problem with their 19 kids? That being said, you're probably impotent anyway, so you're just jealous that they are able to procreate while your family tree will shortly end, but then again that's probably a good thing for the rest of us that DO our research before shooting off at the mouth.

  13. Gina's Insight

The universe has a way of symbolizing that which we need to heed. There is a mind –body-spiritual connection and this connection is more pronounced than many of us are aware of.
Many spiritualists have recognized and wrote about ailments in our body and their respective spiritual origins. This is not a joke.

The term “disorder” itself shows the truth. “Dis-Order”.

Glen, if you are reading this, you know that Jesus spoke in symbolism and Allegory.
There is nothing evil about it.
I interpret dreams which is interpreting symbols the code of Heaven. The bible also makes reference to dreams, symbols in dreams and their significance.

In my opinion, this is GODs way of getting a message to you.

You are having difficulty perceiving the truth. You are seeing “Blind Spots”.

    Webster’s definition of RETINA.
The vertebrate retina is a light-sensitive tissue lining the inner surface of the eye.

I take this as an “Inner Eye” symbolism.
The Inner –Eye is also known as 3rd Eye or Perception of Spiritual Realities.
Light Sensitive – Light is the Truth, GOD.
I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

A person experiencing this ailment, is “not seeing” the light, the truth. GOD.

    Beck made the following statement
“I truly came to a place which is the greatest blessing: Lord, if you need my eyes, they're yours. They were yours the whole time anyway. Thank you for letting me see as far as I have.”

You can give thanks to GOD. You can give GOD your eyes but GOD doesn’t need your eyes.
GOD loves you and is attempting for you to SEE the TRUTH.
You are right, Glenn, this is a place of greatest blessing for GOD is speaking directly to you, through your body.

    Pray the following prayer.
“Lord, GOD, you are the giver of light and truth. I thank you for your message and so now I pray to you to show me the light and truth. I am open now for your truth, to understand the truth as it comes before me and to align myself to it for the good of mankind. Amen.
Say the prayer 7x a day.
You will see the symbol of “eye” 7x on Friday.
    For “eye” day.

If you had been watching Beck when he was with CNN, you would have know that he was harsh on the Bush administration as well. He was trying to warn people of the up-coming economic disaster that was coming due to unbacked securities trading and the bad home loans.

To most of the others here:

The uninformed seem so willing to spew so many uninsightful details. I do watch Beck, then and now. I do not blindly follow. It pays to do the research for yourself. Only then can you make an informed desision as to your personal beliefs. Stop taking someone elses version of the story. LOOK IT UP FOR YOURSELF.

Please, for the sake of everyone, get your hands on original historic documents, letters, etc. and read for yourself! You will be surprised. Take a look at the hate being spewed out there. It's not from conservatives or Glenn Beck. You can poke fun, lie, distort the truth, but trust me, your day will come. @manny I find it hilarious that people like SBP would say that Jefferson and the founding fathers were "Diests".

The whole history of these books [the Gospels] is so defective and doubtful that it seems vain to attempt minute enquiry into it: and such tricks have been played with their text, and with the texts of other books relating to them, that we have a right, from that cause, to entertain much doubt what parts of them are genuine. In the New Testament there is internal evidence that parts of it have proceeded from an extraordinary man; and that other parts are of the fabric of very inferior minds. It is as easy to separate those parts, as to pick out diamonds from dunghills.
-Thomas Jefferson, letter to John Adams, January 24, 1814

Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.
-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Dr. Thomas Cooper, February 10, 1814

If we did a good act merely from love of God and a belief that it is pleasing to Him, whence arises the morality of the Atheist? ...Their virtue, then, must have had some other foundation than the love of God.
-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Thomas Law, June 13, 1814

Among the sayings and discourses imputed to him [Jesus] by his biographers, I find many passages of fine imagination, correct morality, and of the most lovely benevolence; and others again of so much ignorance, so much absurdity, so much untruth, charlatanism, and imposture, as to pronounce it impossible that such contradictions should have proceeded from the same being.

“The doctrines of Jesus are simple, and tend to all the happiness of man.”
“Of all the systems of morality, ancient or modern which have come under my observation, none appears to me so pure as that of Jesus.”

"I am a real Christian, that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus." [Letter to Benjamin Rush April 21, 1803]

“God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift from God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, and that His justice cannot sleep forever.” [Notes on the State of Virginia, 1781]

      HOW DID JEFFERSON KNOW?

Especially: Read the last quote from 1802.

When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe ..

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
      Thomas Jefferson
My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much
      government.
      Thomas Jefferson
No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.
      Thomas Jefferson
The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
      Thomas Jefferson
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
      Thomas Jefferson
To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.
      Thomas Jefferson
      Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:

‘I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their
currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will
grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property – until their children

I can't begin to express how much I loathe Glenn Beck. What really bothers me though is by his own admission he's merely an entertainer(a "clown" per his words) yet he has a following that actually thinks he's intelligent if not prophetic. What were his prophesies during the Bush years? Did he ever mention the word malfeasance in the same sentence as George Bush. Did he ever use the word at all during the period 2000-2008???If not, what kind of prophet could he ever be? Sorry Beck supporters, I think in time it will literally be a case of the blind leading the dumb!

He did blast Bush. For spending and many other things. Base your loathing on facts instead of fiction.

He is as confused as his Fox diatribe to destroy America via the gullible midwesterners, corn and potato farmers that have their nearest strip mall to remind them what intellectual developments we've all managed in 200 years. I don't think he deserves the hatred for something that might hit you out of the blue as well. As for his eminent blindness proving that he is some messenger of God and that the Masons who wrestled the USA from the Evil British Imperialists were Holy Saintly Christians, all this is about as relevant as Iraq is to 9-11. Yet, that's the convenience of paid puppets to anti-American media such as Michael Specter, who are really good at connecting things that have nothing to do with each other.

When I read CNN comments, particularly on a story like this, I understand completely who is teaching the children and youth of America to bully each other to the point of suicide or some other form of violence. You must be so proud of yourselves and all that you add to the world.

Notice how all of "Mark C." comments are copy pasted replies?

There is a LOT of evidence that correlates to the principles this country was founded on and it's founders themselves to Christianity. To say otherwise is willfull (sp?) ignorance. It's amazing what a lack of historical context and brainwashing can do.

There is a lot of hate in relation to Beck. And it's not coming from Glenn Beck. It's coming from those who are opposed to his political views. Making up lies (as you can see in these posts) the wild claims about what he supposedly does, that are not true. These people have no idea who beck is, only what the left wing talking heads tell them. It's sad really, sheep all of them...

you mean there's a LOT of anecdotal evidence, most of which has been misinterpreted or outright misrepresented by the religious right. Were the Founding Fathers all members of the Christian faith? Yes. Did they intend for the United States to be guided solely by the principles of that faith? NO, THEY DID NOT. Any respected historian will tell you the same thing.

      Anon.

It's not JUST anecdotal. Also statements by the writers/signers themselves back it up.

Was it supposed to be an "Ten Commandments"? No. But it was based in the GOD given rights of all men.

jkinorlando- read my other posts, I did not. Please enlighten me where in the constitution this is?

It's not. Bill of rights??? Nope note there either....

It's a single letter, written by Jefferson. After the constitution was written and signed. That letter has been interpreted one way for years and perpetuated as fact to students in public schools. When it is an interpretation. There are alternates.

I'll believe it when I see it. I think it is a ploy to cry up additional ratings. Don't you remember when Rush was going deaf a couple of years ago? It got him a ratings bump. Beck will get one too, along with hallelujah, the countless prayers of the "real Americans" to miraculously cure him.

uh, just goes to show you that when you pick the wrong religion (in this case, Mormonism) you lose. Only question is – which is God's true religion? I for one am sticking Peter Griffin's Church of the Fonz – it seems as likely as any other.

he doesn't speak the truth. He tells you what you want to hear, and you just don't know any better. I'll bet 90% of what you believe about government comes from talking heads like Beck, Limbaugh, etc. And I'll bet 90% of THAT is factually inaccurate or just plainly untrue.

They think everyone sees things the same way they do. I'm sure they are really confounded by it all. If they would just move a little more to the center, they'd get more viewers, perhaps even siphon some off of Fox News, but they just don't seem to get it, just like the President and that crazy Congress.

Dear all Liberal and Progressives above,

Everyone of your lame comments are shameful and sad. You will wake up very soon to a Communist Country and be standing in food lines and stretch your wretched arms out for any hand out possible. I hope you enjoy your silly email, twittering and blogging until you too are cracked in the AS&& by our "new government" that you helped elect in. As you me, there are only a few people like Glenn Beck and David Barton who speak with historical fact and truth. You're too blind or brainwashed to believe otherwise! This country is in a moral free fall and you've joined in.
