What is Glenn Beck's eye disorder?

Fox TV personality Glenn Beck announced last week that he has an eye disorder known as macular dystrophy and  “could go blind the next year."

Beck began to cry during the speech at his “American Revival” tour in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday.

“I know what my wife looks like,” he said. “I know what my children look like. I have a great imagination. I know what color looks like. But I love to read.”

Beck, 46, then joked, “I thought to myself I’m too darn lazy to learn Braille.”

He said he was having trouble focusing his eyes and went to a doctor.

Macular dystrophy can be a confusing term, because it’s used broadly and interchangeably with several diseases including macular degeneration, a common cause of blindness for Americans over the age of 60.

For someone at the age of 46, the macular dystrophy Beck referred to could be hereditary forms of retina damage, said Dr. David DiLoreto, assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, who is not involved in Beck’s care.

There are several forms, including pattern dystrophy, adult vitelliform degeneration and dominant drusen.

Their symptoms are very gradual, mild and often painless. The early signs could be tiny blind spots, inability to distinguish objects at a distance or waviness in vision.

“It makes it difficult to perceive small objects such as reading,” said Dr. Mina Chung, an associate professor of ophthalmology, who researches retinal imaging and genetic eye diseases at the University of Rochester. “In early phases, it can be very mild, with trouble distinguishing fine targets. In later phases, it can cause legal blindness.”

The macula, which is the center part of the retina is damaged. Usually, macular dystrophy in adult onset cases does not cause complete blindness, but it could be “very disabling,” she said.

Macular dystrophy is rare compared with the more common macular degeneration, which affects at least one in 10 Americans over  age 65.

Scientists have yet to identify the gene behind macular dystrophy and a cure is not available.

Beck credited his religion for helping him cope. "After I stopped feeling sorry for myself, I truly came to a place which is the greatest blessing: Lord, if you need my eyes, they're yours. They were yours the whole time anyway. Thank you for letting me see as far as I have.”

God is not pleased with Glenn Beck. Glenn hates President Obama because he is black. Those illnesses are brought on by his evil villain thoughts and it's eating him alive. I have ABSOLUTELY no remorse for Glenn Beck. He will deteriorate slowly. He is an evil person that deserves whatever illness is brought upon him.

God works in mysterious ways but Mr. Beck doesn't need his eyes to see the impact that he has had on this country during one of its greatest times of need. He has been a great inspiration for people with fundamental values inline with the men that founded this great nation..."under God".

Hey, clueless one, the Founding Fathers were almost to a man "Deists". They did not believe in the Christian Bible as fundamentally true. They regarded it as a book of ethics coupled with silly superstition. Jefferson thought of Jesus as a philosopher, not a deity, and rewrote the New Testament removing all the "magic."

Deism is a religious and philosophical belief that a supreme being created the universe, and that this (and religious truth in general) can be determined using reason and observation of the natural world alone, without the need for either faith or organized religion. Many Deists reject the notion that God intervenes in human affairs, for example through miracles and revelations.

The Founding Fathers believed in science and reason. They would have rejected Creationism as an effront to science. In essence, they saw reason and science as spiritual in and of itself.

Read Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli, which states unequivocally that the United States was NOT founded upon the Christian religion. This treaty was ratified by the then sitting President, who was present at the Constitutional Convention.

I would add that, considering the prevailing attitudes of 18th century Europe, and the vast body of scientific knowledge available now but not then, Deism in Jefferson's time was at least as controversial and dangerous a belief to profess as atheism is today. It took a lot of courage, and you might say it took a lot of faith. If they were alive today, I think they would be atheists. I consider religious references in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and other related literature, to be vestigial, poetic, and/or diplomatic. Those references are not indicative of a deep Christian faith, but rather of a still-primitive understanding of Nature.

So I find it ironic, and more than a little disturbing, any time I hear someone parrot the historically indefensible notion that this nation was founded by Christians. It was founded by men who had a certain disgust with Christianity, and a well-deserved one, in my humble opinion.

      Matt,
The phrase "under god" was not uttered by the Founding Fathers. The phrase "under god" was incorporated into the Pledge of Allegiance June 14, 1954, by a Joint Resolution of Congress amending §7 of the Flag Code enacted in 1942.

Glenn Beck's impact on this country has been to disinform based on one of his skewed and just totally insane views. How the hell did this guy get a show that allows him to JUST MAKE STUFF UP that NO ACADEMIC HISTORIAN has ever joined him on to agree (other than revisionist historians who are not credentialed). Fox news, owned by an Australian whose sole goal seems to be to ruin the United States middle class and create a rich and poor society gives pulpits to men whose only sources for news are other Fox commentators–they just MAKE SH–T up! Glenn laughably, is able to espouse to audiences that appear to be barely GED recipients much less college educated his SCHOLARLY ideas such as Obama is a Sccialist (heck he is a Republican), how the Dems do not allow people to have faith. The founding fathers clearly were totally clear on the need for separation of Church and State, yet Beck clearly thinks that these simple ideas are new conspiracies. His "Educational program" is a lot more like Hitler than any of the comparisons he makes between his insane comparisons of Obama to Hitler. He is so caught up in his own dogma that he actually believes the crap he spews out.
God does work in mysterious ways, now if he can somehow prevent his tongue from working I may just say that divine justice has been served. And I mean this with all my soul, I wish no person illness, but will not shed a tear if Mr. Beck were to disappear from the face of Media in short order...he is a hater, like almost all of Fox news, and has an agenda, and its not to educate but to manipulate the truth with deception and ignorance.

"God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the Gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever; That a revolution of the wheel of fortune, a change of situation, is among possible events; that it may become probable by Supernatural influence! The Almighty has no attribute which can take side with us in that event."

I find it hilarious that people like SBP would say that Jefferson and the founding fathers were "Diests".

"We had prayers for divine protection, our prayers were heard and graciously answered. Do we imagine we no longer need His assistance?" -Benjamin Franklin

"This nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians, not on religion, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ." -Patrick Henry

These two statements alone shout to the exact opposite of what people like you believe.

He is truly the God we can talk through and a way that we can live more closer to our religious beliefs. He is an extraordinary man in every sense of the word. People are just jealous they are not in touch with the Lord and Savior as Glen is..largely because these liberals do not have God's blood flowing through their veins like Beck. Instead all Dems are simply satan recarnate!! Just let those who do not believe in our core values go on with their lives. There is no rationalizing with irrational people. If you can not see the light that surrounds Glen's soul then you truly are not a believer.

"Some volumes against Deism fell into my hands. They were said to be the substance of sermons preached at Boyle's Lecture. It happened that they produced on me an effect precisely the reverse of what was intended by the writers; for the arguments of the Deists, which were cited in order to be refuted, appealed to me much more forcibly than the refutation itself. In a word, I soon became a thorough Deist." – Benjamin Franklin

He would seem to disagree with you regarding being a Deist. But what the hell does he know?

And regardless of the Founding Fathers' personal beliefs, they realized the dangers of a nation founded on one particular faith. It would be a repeat of the Church of England, or the theocracies of the Muslim world. They even acknowledged such in the Treaty of Tripoli, with a unanimous vote on such in Congress. And in all times in which 'faith' became a driving force in our nation, it has caused us great heartache or was born from fear. The 'Godless' communists, the hate against people of a different color often justified through the manipulation of scripture, the Prosperity Gospel only having man serve Mammon instead. Reason should be the order of the day, and anything but that should be kept out of government. Worship no gods or twenty is your business otherwise.

Manny, if you doubt that Franklin was a deist, than you obviously know little about him. In his own words, "Some books against Deism fell into my hands... It happened that they wrought an effect on me quite contrary to what was intended by them; for the arguments of the deists, which were quoted to be refuted, appeared to me much stronger than the refutations; in short, I soon became a thorough deist"

As for Jefferson, a few quotes:
"I do not find in orthodox Christianity one redeeming feature."
"Christianity neither is, nor ever was, a part of the Common Law."
"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between church and State."
"I have recently been examining all the known superstitions of the world, and do not find in our particular superstition (Christianity) one redeeming feature. They are all alike founded on fables and mythology."
He also said about Washington, ""Gouverneur Morris had often told me that General Washington believed no more of that system (Christianity) than did he himself."

Manny contends, based on quotes from Patrick Henry and Benjamin Franklin, that the nation was founded by Christians according to the gospels of Jesus Christ. Please tell me where Jesus advocated a two-houses legislature, checks and balances, and seperation of powers between the executive, judicial, and legislative branches. Not being a biblical scholar, I don't recall those in the bible. Fact is, our founding fathers, whatever their religious inclinations, based our government on their interpretation of European political philosophy. We were not founded "by Christians based on Christian principles."

Beck is simply a gifted story-teller, who can take a grain of truth, expand it to sound very reasonable and plausible, back it up wtih a few off hand quotes and examples, and rewrite history to suit his conservative viewpoint. He's very good at it. But as someone noted, not a single credible historian has ever backed up his views.

There is no God in the Constitution

Jefferson sought to organize his thoughts on religion. He rejected the superstitions and mysticism of Christianity and even went so far as to edit the gospels, removing the miracles and mysticism of Jesus (see The Jefferson Bible) leaving only what he deemed the correct moral philosophy of Jesus.

Jefferson saw no place for God in government

Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.
-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Dr. Thomas Cooper, February 10, 1814

SBP: It is always funny to me to see a pathetic atheist go 'off' on a person simply for mentioning the Creator. What is even more funny is you ridiculous comment. Anyone with half a brain stem can recognize the Bible does NOT disagree with science. Quite the contrary. Scientists have just RECENTLY began to discover what the Bible has commented on for years. It is obvious that you are too stupid to differentiate between false religious teaching and the Bible. NO WHERE does it say it was created in 7 literal days. NO, it is millions of years old. The Bible talks about the 'circle of the earth' LONG BEFORE humans knew this fact. Your precious scientists thought the Earth was flat. Those are just a few examples.

Why don't you get off your high horse and humble yourself to recognize that you, yes even YOU were created by someone. He has pity on you and others who are so blind as to not see the SCIENTIFIC PROOF that there is a Creator. Examine the butterfly, the flowers, the simple yet extremely complex structure of the cell. I enjoy learning about biology and how everything was made absolutely perfect. It is sad that a brain was even wasted on someone as brainwashed and confused as you. Hopefully someday you will take your blinders off but until then, leave intelligent scientic study to those who know how to use it.

it is important for Christians and non-Christians to understand this .... Glen Beck is NOT a Christian not by any stretch of the imagination.
Now, lest anyone think im a liberal left wing atheist, I can tell you with clear conscience that i am a Bible Believing Borna Again Christian. I'm a sinner saved by Grace.
Jesus teaches that we will be known by the fruit of our lives. The problem is that Glen Beck may claim to be a Christian but his life his filled with hatred and superiority and intolerance and a feeling that some humans' lives have more value than others.
Glen, if you do in fact want to be a Christian, you need seek a true relationship with Jesus, this starts with acknoledgement that you, just like the rest of us, are a sinn er and need a savior and that you want Jesus to be Lord of your life. And you might want to ask Jesus to create in you a new heart, a soft heart, as scripture says, "a heart made of flesh and not of stone."
You are a nationalist Glen, not a Christian. A Christian relaizes that the mexican migrant worker has just as many inalienable rights as the american in the three piece suit. That the Cambodian mother working in the fields has just as much value as the American farmer.
Love God with all your heart mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself ... who is your neighbor Glen? EVERYONE. If you have no love for your fellow man, if you dont love the unlovable, then you dont love God and there is no place for you in the kingdom.
Being a Christian is about love and compassion and tenderness and mercy. If you dont see those qualities in a person then you can bet they are not a Christian or if they are a Christian then they are wsaaaaaaaaay off the path.

You are correct sir. Mind not these ignorant, arrogant, self boasters...and if they have something to say to us. Let it be..they fuel our fire and are used as prime examples to make the wise grow. Fools will never see themselves as fools, and think they are always right. Their toughts and actions cannot penetrate our souls..let them try. Angry they grow and insecurity is all they show. and STILL serving as excellent examples! Very entertaining! I learn much from an unbeliver..discern their ways. Thus will know how to handle them precisely.

Not to be a "dittohead", but ditto all of those who have intelligently put forth that our Founding Fathers were (mostly) Deists, and the most influential among the founders were absolutely committed to a wall of separation between church and state. I believe that had many of our founders come out 100 years later, they would have identified themselves as atheists or agnostics. Deism was kind of a "politically correct" way of being a science & reason type of freethinker in the 1700s.

Anybody can find a quote or two from the religiously devout from the early days of our nation, or from those who fought for some kind of state & church intertwining (and thankfully LOST, or Mr. Beck may have never gotten the chance to be a practicing Mormon). Everybody is entitled to their OWN religious beliefs or lack thereof, but nobody is entitled to their own facts. A great book on this is "The Godless Constitution" - goes into great detail about the fight to keep religious sentiments and even the word "God" out of the U.S. Constitution. No, the word "God" does not appear once in the Constitution. And I believe Jefferson, Madison, Franklin, and others would have fought back hard to keep it out of the Pledge of Allegiance-which, again, was a change made in McCarthy-era 1950s. (Obviously) it is my belief that trying to mix patriotism or government with religious beliefs is a poisonous mix that does not even serve the rights of believers very well; it only feeds on the pious ego trips of those self-righteous fundamentalists pushing the efforts.

      I found this quote suspicious:

"This nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians, not on religion, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ." -Patrick Henry

so I looked into it. It was NOT a quote BY Patrick Henry, it was a quote in an article written 1956 ABOUT Patrick Henry.

Jeff- more than likely (and more of a rule than the exception) you won't get it- sadly. Most folks (I didn't say all) play the "post-office" game (or whatever you called it when you played it) that they played in elementary school. Start with the first person, whisper a phrase, then see what it comes out as at the end. The vast majority of these posts are based on hear-say and possibly an occasional viewing and/or listening to Beck's show.

Picking out pieces or parts (even if they be large parts) can still be far from what someone said, contextually speaking- and yes, context is everything.

Unfortunately, salient and legitimate is going to be the exception here, Jeff....

Watch this- I'm going to surprise at least one person here... Abe Lincoln, our 16th president, owned slaves!! (NO, I didn't say it was RIGHT, MORAL, or even remotely acceptable). Just stating that off-the-wall fact, because most folks really do not know their own national history... Sad...

There are 2 new era's of slavery- slavery to the media, and slavery to ignorance.

I'm sure the flamers are ready for combat, so... FLAME AWAY~

Nancy, I agree with you. All the other posters who are anti what you said have a version of truth that is as distorted as their comments. Truth, in this world, is about what they want it to be and not what is real truth. A man's truth is according to his myopic view of what he feels is truth. For example, Obama said that the healthcare bill was not to be funded by taxes as many said the fees and charges were taxes. Now, he is defending the charges as taxes that government has a right to levy. Now tell me, which truth is real? His supporters see nothing wrong with his lies and these are the same people who are now trashing you.

The bias displayed by each of the ignorant loudmouths proclaiming their hate and dislike in these posts is shockingly hypocritical. Beck certainly has his own views, but I do think he makes an attempt to see past those views to the truth. How successful he is at overcoming bias is up for debate. I don't believe any of you have seriously researched anything he has said. Your own bias keeps you from even making an attempt at seeing the real truth. Is it reasonable to assume that only based on who he is that everything he stands for is a lie? Of course not...Unfortunately, there are too many people on both sides of the so-called aisle in this country that simply allow their own bias to blind themselves and wallow blissfully in ignorance. Open your eyes and your minds. Not just with Beck but with all sides of the debate. Even those who dislike Obama can’t honestly say everything is does or says are wrong. Stop being the pathetic sheep you are.

According to Beck, they took baseball bats and barged into the building chanting and banging on the windows of the offices where the recount was taking place. Thuggery and intimidation over civilized democratic elections... that's brown shirt nazi strategy. And that's the REAL Glen Beck... in his own words. AND.. he was proud of it!

Don't speak for the masses, as it makes you seem foolish.
I can promise you that 3/4 of Americans would NOT vote for him. Actually, I'd guess that he might get 5-10% of the vote in a Republican primary. He is such an extremist that he would not stand a chance.
You must realize that the country is basically fiscally conservative and socially progressive. In your dream world (and Mr. Beck's), you only see socialists taking this country to a new dictatorship where everyone who is pro-life gets burned at the stake.

I understand that you're afraid of change, but on behalf of myself and many that I know feel the same way, we are happy to see the country moving in this direction after many years of moving further and further right... It's now moving towards the center.

So once again, don't speak for the rest of us. That being said, I wish the best for Mr. Beck, even though I'm sure he feels that I should be sterilized for my more progressive views. Unfortunately, this is a permanent and untreatable condition. I pray that he learns to deal with it the best he can and continues to keep the positive attitude he has shown so far.

The guy's a former disc jockey, Mormon and alcoholic who has recently compared himself to Martin Luther King. A more pathetic, divisive character doesn't exist on television or radio today, with the possible exception of Rush Limbaugh.

While I would not wish blindness on anyone, I certainly didn't cry when I read this article. Like many others here, I consider Beck to be a braying fool, full of bluster and idiocy. He thinks he is right simply because he can scream louder than the next guy.

Ed and Gina, if I were of the praying sort (but I'm not even a deist, much less a Chrisitan) I would pray for you to find guidance and the ability to discern fact from fiction.

This is comic relief. Some of these responses are too hysterical. As I would say to anyone in his situation, I wish you well. However, I still think he's a misguided idiot, manipulating those who fear the world and probably themselves. His situation has nothing to do with God, and it surely is not a “reap what you sow situation,” because Glen Beck is twisted in his views. Its just fact that he has a condition that was probably there all along. I can't help but say, if this shuts up, so be it! I loathe people who spread fear, ignorance and hate, which he does on many levels. What I despise even more are those who listen because they are unable to think for themselves. Word to the wise… You have a brain so use it!

Three quarters of the Sheeple, maybe. Well, now that I think about it, not even that many, because apparently a pretty good percentage of the sheeple think Sarah Palin would make a nifty president, by golly. Maverick! Just wanted to get that word in there. Sounds so much nicer than Quitter. No, Edna, three quarters of the people would not vote for Glen Beck. Amazingly - and I know this is hard to fathom - the vast majority of us believe he is totally full of crap, makes a great living by fooling the willing, and would say anything that would bring him more notoriety and viewers. I'm sorry a fellow human being may be going blind, but to me the saddest part of the story is in comments like yours. Beck could tell you all liberals are murderers and you'd repeat it to everyone you know. That's not "having an opinion", that's being blind. Ooo, nice tie-in to this story.

Perhaps you folks should go name him King of the Cry Baby party? Your main campaign slogan could be "Uhm, *sniff*, excuse me.... I need a moment please... *sniffle*...." Or offer to call him Founding Father of your party, and he will jump at the chance and probably weep so hard that he wets his britches.

When you say 3/4...I think its more likely 75% of the country would vote against him. I bet a good portion of the country would revolt and try to overthrow the government if Beck was elected president.

And as long as I'm here, I'll remind everyone that studies have shown prayer has no effect on recovering from illness. Although in one study, the people that were told they were being prayed for actually had more complications after surgery probably because they had anxiety about people praying for them (ie, am I really that sick that you have teams of people praying for me?)

Anyways, I do hope Mr. Beck's illness isn't as bad as it sounds and that he gets better. Luckily he makes a lot of money and can afford to go to the doctor, unlike some of us.

It is amazing how viscious liberals can be. I totally oppose almost everything President Obama stands for, but I respect him as a person and would fight to preserve his right to his beliefs (I am a retired Navy Captain). Why is it that liberals think that conservatives do not have the right to their beliefs? Would they fight to ensure that Glenn Beck has the right to express and exercise his beliefs? Probably 99% would not. That is the difference. Conservatives may disagree with your views, but 99% would fight to the death to preserve your right to have and express those views.

I can agree with you to a point. Many liberals can be harsh with their words, but it is the same for extreme conservatives. As for suppressing the right to the freedom of expression, you are so ridiculously off the mark. I support the rights of Mr. Beck, the Tea Party, Mrs. Palin, etc. It is the rhetoric that comes from these conservative extremists that is being insulted, just as the rhetoric from the extremist liberals is constantly being insulted by conservatives.
By saying "probably 99% would not," you have shown that you feel you are superior to a similar person with liberal ideals, and that is just as bad as someone saying that Mr. Beck shouldn't have the right to free speech.

Trust me. As a progressive, I WELCOME the speech put out from the extremists on BOTH SIDES of the political spectrum. It only makes them look foolish. And yes, although I feel for Mr. Beck's current health issue, he definitely does fall into that category.

When has any liberal argued that Beck doesn't have a right to expressed his beliefs? I hear a lot of liberals disagreeing with (and mocking) him, but I haven't heard any calls to silence him.

And you ask whether liberals would fight for conservative's rights to express themselves. The ACLU, a group which conservatives love to hate, has made it their business to fight for free expression for all groups, even those they hate (like the KKK). Have you ever heard of a conservative advocacy group similarly fighting for the rights of liberals?

For 8 years during the Bush administration, liberals were resoundingly silenced by the neocon loudmouths who accused them of being unpatriotic, unchristian, evil; and tried to turn "liberal" into a dirty word. Then they passed the patriot act and infiltrated liberal organizations to terrorize them - all the while hoping to accuse liberals of being terrorists so they could throw them in prisons (under the patriot act) without legal representation or charges or right to an opportunity to be heard. The Fascist Right was busy setting it all up and the Goebbels of their fascist government (Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck - to name just a few) were filling your ignorant minds with fear and hatred, hoping that lynch mobs would begin to terrorize the liberals. Some did. The murder of doctors . . . spitting on congressman and calling them "niggers" as they went in to pass a health care bill. NO, SIR, THE NEOCONS WOULD NOT HAVE FOUGHT FOR MY RIGHT TO SPEAK OUT. THEY WOULD HAVE MURDERED ME, HUSHED ME, THROWN ME IN PRISON, OR DROWN ME OUT WITH THEIR HATEFUL AND FEAR FILLED RHETORIC.

Michael, many of us progressives would protect Glenn Beck's rights to free speech just as you say you would. My problem with the pseudo conservatives like Beck, Hannity and Limbaugh is that they don't welcome dissent or allow smart representatives of opposing views to debate without being interrupted and shouted down.I do not belieeve Beck and others ( also extremists on the left) do not have the right to scream fire in a movie theatre which Beck basically does when he riles people up so much on his show by making them afraid of the current administration.I believe free speech comes with some degree of responsibilty. Beck, Hannity and Limbaugh incite anger in many of their listeners by making the democrats seem evil and this can incite the extremists to do harm. I don't care much for O'Relly either but at least he seems to savor good debates with the opposition and occasionally supports Obama. To state that Conservatives support Freedom of Speech more than Liberals is foolish because it is just your opinion ( no facts). But I seriously doubt that many of the extreme conservatives that are praying for every Obama failure, faux pas, etc. would defend the right to free speech, let alone the right to hold opinions opposing theirs. Anytime a liberal voices any opinion, the conservatives consider them socialists and a danger to the Constitution and American democracy. What makes you think they will defend anybody they hold in such disdain? This is a country that gave you Japanese concentration camps. It would happen again in a flash. This action is more representative of what conservatives believe when it comes to free speech. You can have free speech as long as it agrees with the conservative viewpoint. In their anger at Obama and his administrfation, the conservatives are no longer honorable, and are immoral. Also, Glen Beck, for all his "Christian" stances, is a baptized MORMON!!! This can be confirmed with a simple internet search and a video with HIM direclty professing it. Try and clear the ether haze from the conservative bubble to see wha tthe truth really is. Sir, where can you provide examples that all liberals (you imply it in your post) don't want conservatives to have their right to express their ideas? In this day of say what you want on the internet I see a lot of things, and frankly much of it brings the debate to new lows every day. However, I rarely, if ever, see anyone make any comment implying that someone should have their right to free speech taken away from them.

Are liberals trying to enact laws to stop conservative from talking? Are they demanding they be arrested? Trying to get them off the airwaves/cable/internet/etc? I don't think so.

Michael, I think on the great hate-O-meter, conservatives probably take the prize. You don't see the likes of Beck and Limbaugh hate speech in liberal radio, you never saw signs like the Tea Partiers raise from anti-bush rallies, the bizarre "god-is-punishing the..." are all the right wing religious, and the right wing call of let's take back "OUR" America (just as if America belonged to them!) all belong to the right wing. In the blog-o-sphere, they run pretty equal depending on the blog. Don't be Pollyanna about it–open your eyes.

Just reading all of this gives me a headache. This article has nothing to do with politics. It's about a man (who happens to be a Conservative personality) with a terrible eye disorder.

I'm not a huge fan of Mr. Beck but I hope he doesn't go blind (I wouldn't wish that upon anyone). These partisian politics are going to be the death of us all. Everyone seems to think he/she is right and won't listen to another view point. Left and Right both seem to be wrong these days. Whatever happend to just being American? Live and let live.

Good luck in your treatment Mr. Beck and best wishes for a healthy future!

Conservatives all share the belief that all should be able to express their views? Is that demonstrated when Beck and other such talking heads interrupt or shout down anyone who dares express disagreement? Is that why Faux News' so-called "fair and balanced" reporting only covers the neocon side of the argument? I don't feel sorry for Beck–he had the chance to see, even if he chose not to.

Mr. Beck, I will pray for you, and for all the other people who just didn't get it. I will pray that one day when each of these sad people find out devastating news about their lives, others won't begin their rantings and ravings about shortcomings and vewpoints during a time when their pain and loss is so intense. I mean, we wouldn't want their rights to be trampled on during a time of personal crisis, right?? How un-American!

You've got it backwards. Conservatives are vicious. Their one and only argument – since Conservatives are not FOR anything – is that the opponents – like me – are morally inferior. The only reason – according to Conservatives – to oppose Conservative leaders in Congress is to loaf, take drugs, get on welfare, be stupid, live on the dole, get food stamps, not work hard, have no work ethic, etc. Every Conservative attack is an attack on the integrity of the opponent. To Conservatives, you cannot disagree with them; you can only be stupid, lazy, or selfish. You must be a terrorist, a communist, a socialist, a con-artist, a welfare cheat, a criminal, or a member of Acorn.

If every Conservative disappeared from the US tonight, the nation would be able to handle its problems.

My problem with this piece of trash and people alike is that they think:

      A. Their assumption that their way of thinking is universal.
      B. Americans are not smart enough and let me tell you about the Black Helicopters.
      C. Distortion of history just to make their lies appear credible.
      D. The continuous pounding of the airwaves with "The sky is falling".
      E. Black people are taking over, so "White people, stand up"
      F. How they milk everyone that follows of listen to them., ie Gold.
      G. Religion...this would be a long conversation, but I know God and Politics do not mix.
      H. and lastly, Glenn Beck is just a deranged man, he needs help.

This thread is pretty funny. I have been reading a lot of commentary on how evil Beck is…But what is really interesting is that not one actual example was ever used. It has all been a bunch of generalizations of what is perceived as a typical conservative.
Therefore, I will leave you with another generalization, and that is that Liberals operate on Emotions not facts. I think that is why people have issues with Beck because he makes common sense (logical) decisions and is not inhibited by emotional feelings. As a Liberal, you can never understand this because you have a mental disorder.
Hopefully, Obama’s Healthcare plan will save you at the same time it destroys the best Healthcare system in the world. Capitalism…Booooooo. And remember, Beck can’t read any of these, so I suggest you all send some hate filled audio files.

Like you, I am retired Navy, I was a Chief. The point I disagree on is the liberals being viscous. Some are just not all. Just as some conservitives are, but not all. When it comes to Glenn Beck and people viscousness, I believe that much of it is brought about through the way he expresses those views. The conservative movement went from political movement to down right lies, distrotion and attacks. Just as in the Shirley Sherrod case that we have all watch unfold over the past few days. Fox News.com broke the story and it was immediately aired on Bill O'rielly's show and everyone on Fox was calling for her resignation. Now that the truth comes out Fox has focussed and is trying to lay blame on the adminstration. When News organizations such as Fox shift from reporting to biased oppinions, it will cause backlash. Not to say that liberals are any better, just look at MSNBC

I left the Republican Party, in 2007, after being a two time Reagan Republican.

I left the party, in large part, due to the fact that the conservatives could not stop themselves from vilifying all Democrats and others they did not like. Nothing was off the table when it came to labeling Americans who did not agree with them as un-American or worse.

Beck is nothing less than a demagogue and nothing more. His show is entertainment designed to inflame and mislead his viewers. He purposely phrases his comments with a wink and nod to cast doubt on others, utterly lies when he feels necessary and continues to boost his ratings by making sensationalized comments that do nothing more than wave red meat in front of his followers.

It would not surprise me one bit if this claim of potential blindness was nothing more than a publicity ploy or an outright lie. I'll be happy to retract that comment should he go blind but I don't think that's going to happen.

Beck is bad for America and many people, especially those commenting here, see him as just that. If he wasn't constantly pointing the finger at others and claiming that they're bad for America, then maybe fewer fingers would be pointed at him.

The guy's a hatemongering racist coward. If you believe what he has to spew, then i have some lovely beach-front property in Omaha and a bridge or 2 to sell you.

You make that statement, but you don't even spell his name correctly. Hmm. For someone who's so in the know, one would think you'd at least get his name right. Glenn Beck's name is spelled with two 'n's', not one. If you watched his show you would know that, so how can you, in good conscience say he's a racist? His concern is not with the color of anyone's skin, it's with what is happening to our country. At least he's making people aware. What's wrong, you are afraid that people might get the low down on what's really transpiring? Too late, we already have. See you at the races in November.

Sorry Lee, not everybody is obsessed with Beck like you. Using two "n's" to spell the name is not that common and isn't much of a mistake to make. But when somebody has as little ammo as you, I guess you have to clutch at some straws.

Lee, everyone knows that using two "N"s in a name is of German origin, and Hitler was German. Therefore, by Mr. Beck's logic he himself is a Nazi. You can't argue with "logic".

Kly – Hitler was actually Austrian. He didn't become a German citizen until 1932. He was the head of the National Socialist German Workers Workers Party. He was a horrible man. Having German herritage doesn't autimatically make you like Hitler. That is an unfair generalization.

Is that his legacy? Yes, we are under God, even Beck. Intolerance and misleading people into hypocrisy is not Godly. Ask his victims what he really is. Sorry Matt, he could be a false idol. If you read the literature written by founders of this great nation, (not the Beck versions) you will find some different values than those of Beck. Beck could be a false prophet. Maybe this ailment will allow him to see another light and he can turn his energy on coming to the middle and unifying people rather than furthering the already absurd divisions in the American public. I'm going to precede my comments with a profound (at least some will think as much- the rest either will not understand, or will THINK they understand, but really don't...) I am a Christian, but hate religion... yes, I said it. Read it again. I'm sure there are those will will laugh or think it's quite possibly the dumbest thing they've read/heard, but for those who are Christians (and I don't mean simply by "title"- rather the true meaning of the word) will know what I mean.

I'm not Republican, Democrat, Conservative, or Liberal. I fall into no one category, other than a fallible human being. We've never had a perfect president, nor will we. Those who think there will or can be, are sadly mistaken. Glen Beck, is also a fallible human. Now, before you make snide comments regarding that last statement, consider this. Who is your role-model? The one(s) you side with? Your Party? Your Affiliations? – Guaranteed, they have ALL made serious mistakes and it can be found if you do enough digging. Why? The HUMAN factor! What a concept, huh.

Do I agree with everything Beck has to say? No. ANY of our presidents? No. Is there always another side to consider? YES! Haven't we ALL made mistakes? Said things we should not have? Lied? Cheated? Before you say or think another person has done "more" of this than you- does it really matter? Really? Fact is, we all are wrong most of the time.

Beck himself shouldn't be attacked. If you don't like what he says, then disagree with what he says, but for crying out loud, leave the man himself alone. You (and this includes me) aren't any better. I pray his ailment will improve. Macular Deg. is a terrible disease. My grandmother has it but in a much more advanced stage (at which point it can become VERY painful). I wish him well.

You all have an inalienable right to your opinions. I am also a soldier in the US Army. I would willingly lay down my life defend your right to hold and express such. That day may come. Stop tearing each other down and express your opinion of what is being said or done instead of tearing down the person... doesn't do any good other than possibly make you feel better about yourself- in which case, I feel sorry for you.

President Obama is my Commander-in-Chief. I whole-heartedly disagree with many of his policies, however, I respect his position with the utmost respect. My point in stating this is to point out this one fact- you can disagree with someone's opinion without tearing said person down.

From some of the things stated here, I also believe a good many of you have never taken the time or at least fully read our Constitution. (It's too bad this isn't a requirement for all citizens). – HMUNGUS appears to have at least attempted (so thank you).

I know this was a rather long post to state only a few things- but I thought it necessary. I wanted to point out that I fall into almost none of your categories, yet, I will not tear Beck down as an individual with the same rights as you and I.

Speak against his actions, opinions, or what-have-you... not against the individual.

Many of you, and I won't mention names, either didn't know this, or have forgotten. To have the Federal govt. step in on healthcare, and MOST of these other issues is already too much.

Our states need to step UP to the plate, and the Feds need to step DOWN... Where is the line? Who will tell the Feds when and/or where to stop? Once our freedoms are gone? Too little, too late...

I will, however, continue to serve my country with pride and honor.

LOL! He uses the same fake tears-inducing cream as Nancy Grease, ur I mean Grace.

His target audience is ONLY old white fundamentalist bigots who live at home with a thousand cats.

He is a piece of garbage liar, makes up facts and uses them to scare people, but even a scum bag like him doesn't deserve this, I hope he keep his eye sight for as long as possible.

While I totally disagree with his politics, being a history buff, I hate to admit it, but MOST of the historical examples he gives are true and correct. He's not lying at all. He was on the TV in a restaraunt i was in, and I saw him talking about how Woodrow Wilson was a white supremasist. I couldnt believe that Glenn Beck is the 1st person who actually got that right, Wilson was a white supremasist. Now, while his historical facts are correct, his interperatation of them I find to be wrong. And wow, there is alot of hate on this message board. I find it so hypocritical that the people who seem to be demanding 'tolerance' are the least tolerant ones out there. Sure, theyre tolarant of other cultures, religions (except christians, Im an aethiest), sexual preferance, but man, if you have a different political view, they HATE you.

Now here is a good objective alternate view. It is amazing that blind hatred on this comment section. You my friend are actually of sound mind. Even though I'm sure I would disagree with you about the interpretations.

    • NEVER tolerate hate

WINDWALKER: So as a society we should tolerate terrorist? Murderers? Rapists? No he has done none of those things. But you completely miss the point of why he should not be tolerated. When a person willfully encourages others to HATE even if he does not carry out any ACT , he is still guilty. He is encouraging people to be racist and unsympathetic towards those in need i.e. healthcare reform. WAKE UP!

5% for and 95% against Glenn Beck (as indicated in all of these comments) seems to suggest that we are indeed "on to him" - he's scum.

It's amazing. How many of you think Glenn Beck is scum. Couldn't tell by his ratings, however. He still smokes everyone else in that time slot. So, tell me, he's scum but you watch him as well? Or not? I guess not. That's why you don't have the faintest clue about what you post here where he's concerned. You don't even know the difference between a republican and a libertarian. Like some other poster put it, all tally up to a whopping 400 here. LOL. Too funny!

Wow. there's a lot of word of political disagreement in this thread with Glen. but if i was to put myself in his shoes, I'd say anything that anyone would listen to so i can get my ratings up. i'd care about my bills and mortgage being paid in time and if people want me to say i hate everything about gov't and pay me lots of money even though i may not believe it 100%, i'll say it every day and night and twice on Sundays! He's ON TV. He only cares about ratings and getting more people to listen to him... whatever he says doesn not matter... he doesn't even have to believe or support it in anyway. It's all ways about the money for the indiviuals.

Not against obvious frauds like Beck. I tell you what - why don't you invest your money in the gold scam he endorses and get back to us. We could have a really nice laugh at your expense.
