What is Glenn Beck's eye disorder?
Fox TV personality Glenn Beck announced last week that he has an eye disorder known as macular dystrophy and “could go blind the next year." Beck began to cry during the speech at his “American Revival” tour in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday. “I know what my wife looks like,” he said. “I know what my children look like. I have a great imagination. I know what color looks like. But I love to read.” Beck, 46, then joked, “I thought to myself I’m too darn lazy to learn Braille.” He said he was having trouble focusing his eyes and went to a doctor. Macular dystrophy can be a confusing term, because it’s used broadly and interchangeably with several diseases including macular degeneration, a common cause of blindness for Americans over the age of 60. For someone at the age of 46, the macular dystrophy Beck referred to could be hereditary forms of retina damage, said Dr. David DiLoreto, assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, who is not involved in Beck’s care. There are several forms, including pattern dystrophy, adult vitelliform degeneration and dominant drusen. Their symptoms are very gradual, mild and often painless. The early signs could be tiny blind spots, inability to distinguish objects at a distance or waviness in vision. “It makes it difficult to perceive small objects such as reading,” said Dr. Mina Chung, an associate professor of ophthalmology, who researches retinal imaging and genetic eye diseases at the University of Rochester. “In early phases, it can be very mild, with trouble distinguishing fine targets. In later phases, it can cause legal blindness.” The macula, which is the center part of the retina is damaged. Usually, macular dystrophy in adult onset cases does not cause complete blindness, but it could be “very disabling,” she said. Macular dystrophy is rare compared with the more common macular degeneration, which affects at least one in 10 Americans over age 65. Scientists have yet to identify the gene behind macular dystrophy and a cure is not available. Beck credited his religion for helping him cope. "After I stopped feeling sorry for myself, I truly came to a place which is the greatest blessing: Lord, if you need my eyes, they're yours. They were yours the whole time anyway. God is not pleased with Glenn Beck. Glenn hates President Obama because he is black. Those illnesses are brought on by his evil villain thoughts and it's eating him alive. Hey, clueless one, the Founding Fathers were almost to a man "Deists". They did not believe in the Christian Bible as fundamentally true. They regarded it as a book of ethics coupled with silly superstition. Jefferson thought of Jesus as a philosopher, not a deity, and rewrote the New Testament removing all the "magic."
Deism is a religious and philosophical belief that a supreme being created the universe, and that this (and religious truth in general) can be determined using reason and observation of the natural world alone, without the need for either faith or organized religion. Many Deists reject the notion that God intervenes in human affairs, for example through miracles and revelations.
The Founding Fathers believed in science and reason. They would have rejected Creationism as an effront to science. In essence, they saw reason and science as spiritual in and of itself.
Read Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli, which states unequivocally that the United States was NOT founded upon the Christian religion. This treaty was ratified by the then sitting President, who was present at the Constitutional Convention.

I would add that, considering the prevailing attitudes of 18th century Europe, and the vast body of scientific knowledge available now but not then, Deism in Jefferson's time was at least as controversial and dangerous a belief to profess as atheism is today. It took a lot of courage, and you might say it took a lot of faith. If they were alive today, I think they would be atheists. I consider religious references in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and other related literature, to be vestigial, poetic, and/or diplomatic. Those references are not indicative of a deep Christian faith, but rather of a still-primitive understanding of Nature.
So I find it ironic, and more than a little disturbing, any time I hear someone parrot the historically indefensible notion that this nation was founded by Christians. It was founded by men who had a certain disgust with Christianity, and a well-deserved one, in my humble opinion.

The phrase "under god" was not uttered by the Founding Fathers. The phrase "under god" was incorporated into the Pledge of Allegiance June 14, 1954, by a Joint Resolution of Congress amending §7 of the Flag Code enacted in 1942.
Glenn Beck's impact on this country has been to disinform based on one of his skewed and just totally insane views. How the hell did this guy get a show that allows him to JUST MAKE STUFF UP that NO ACADEMIC HISTORIAN has ever joined him on to agree (other than revisionist historians who are not credentialed). Fox news, owned by an Australian whose sole goal seems to be to ruin the United States middle class and create a rich and poor society gives pulpits to men whose only sources for news are other Fox commentators–they just MAKE SH–T up! Glenn laughably, is able to espouse to audiences that appear to be barely GED recipients much less college educated his SCHOLARLY ideas such as Obama is a Sccialist (heck he is a Republican), how the Dems do not allow people to have faith. The founding fathers clearly were totally clear on the need for separation of Church and State, yet Beck clearly thinks that these simple ideas are new conspiracies. His "Educational program" is a lot more like Hitler than any of the comparisons he makes between his insane comparisons of Obama to Hitler. He is so caught up in his own dogma that he actually believes the crap he spews out.

And I mean this with all my soul, I wish no person illness, but will not shed a tear if Mr. Beck were to disappear from the face of Media in short order...he is a hater, like almost all of Fox news, and has an agenda, and its not to educate but to manipulate the truth with deception and ignorance.

Thankfully we have Glen who exudes the very nature of our loving and compassionate Jesus Christ. These people are idiots that do not see that Glen is much more than just a "normal" man. And regardless of the Founding Fathers' personal beliefs, they realized the dangers of a nation founded on one particular faith. It would be a repeat of the Church of England, or the theocracies of the Muslim world. They even acknowledged such in the Treaty of Tripoli, with a unanimous vote on such in Congress. And in all times in which 'faith' became a driving force in our nation, it has caused us great heartache or was born from fear. The 'Godless' communists, the hate against people of a different color often justified through the manipulation of scripture, the Prosperity Gospel only having man serve Mammon instead. Reason should be the order of the day, and anything but that should be kept out of government. Worship no gods or twenty is your business otherwise.

Manny contends, based on quotes from Patrick Henry and Benjamin Franklin, that the nation was founded by Christians according to the gospels of Jesus Christ. Please tell me where Jesus advocated a two-houses legislature, checks and balances, and seperation of powers between the executive, judicial, and legislative branches. Not being a biblical scholar, I don't recall those in the bible. Fact is, our founding fathers, whatever their religious inclinations, based our government on their interpretation of European political philosophy. We were not founded "by Christians based on Christian principles."
Beck is simply a gifted story-teller, who can take a grain of truth, expand it to sound very reasonable and plausible, back it up wtih a few off hand quotes and examples, and rewrite history to suit his conservative viewpoint. He's very good at it. But as someone noted, not a single credible historian has ever backed up his views.
Beck, a former disc jockey, is a blight on our culture and one of the divisive forces in American politics today. Watching this man ramble through his screeds is one of the most exasperating things I've ever done. He has all the symptoms of a manic depressive, going from rants to sobs in seconds. He compares himself to Martin Luther King, Jr. and Abraham Lincoln, and has convinced himself and his viewers that Barack Obama is the anti-christ. Probably the most despicable man on television today. Who cares about his eye disorder. It's is personality disorder that counts.

People watch stuff that is entertaining. A high television rating doesn't mean that FOX News has better news. It just means FOX has managed to put on a better show than CNN has. FOX's highest-rated programs aren't even news shows. They are all opinions.

I am as far from being a fan as you can get but you have to admire Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Sarah Palin. They know how to play the right like a fiddle and make millions by stirring the pot. Sometimes I catch this guy's comedy show, but I don't always understand his jokes. He's a year older than I am; I've got something in my eye right now and for a minute I though I caught his disease by reading the article, but as it turns out I just have a dirty contact lense. Phew! That's a relief! Going blind would really stink unless it helped my TV ratings.

Jesus teaches that we will be known by the fruit of our lives. The problem is that Glen Beck may claim to be a Christian but his life his filled with hatred and superiority and intolerance and a feeling that some humans' lives have more value than others.
Glen, if you do in fact want to be a Christian, you need seek a true relationship with Jesus, this starts with acknoledgement that you, just like the rest of us, are a sinn er and need a savior and that you want Jesus to be Lord of your life. And you might want to ask Jesus to create in you a new heart, a soft heart, as scripture says, "a heart made of flesh and not of stone."
You are a nationalist Glen, not a Christian. A Christian relaizes that the mexican migrant worker has just as many inalienable rights as the american in the three piece suit. That the Cambodian mother working in the fields has just as much value as the American farmer.

Not to be a "dittohead", but ditto all of those who have intelligently put forth that our Founding Fathers were (mostly) Deists, and the most influential among the founders were absolutely committed to a wall of separation between church and state. I believe that had many of our founders come out 100 years later, they would have identified themselves as atheists or agnostics. Deism was kind of a "politically correct" way of being a science & reason type of freethinker in the 1700s.
Anybody can find a quote or two from the religiously devout from the early days of our nation, or from those who fought for some kind of state & church intertwining (and thankfully LOST, or Mr. Beck may have never gotten the chance to be a practicing Mormon). Everybody is entitled to their OWN religious beliefs or lack thereof, but nobody is entitled to their own facts. A great book on this is "The Godless Constitution" - goes into great detail about the fight to keep religious sentiments and even the word "God" out of the U.S. Constitution. No, the word "God" does not appear once in the Constitution. And I believe Jefferson, Madison, Franklin, and others would have fought back hard to keep it out of the Pledge of Allegiance-which, again, was a change made in McCarthy-era 1950s. (Obviously) it is my belief that trying to mix patriotism or government with religious beliefs is a poisonous mix that does not even serve the rights of believers very well; it only feeds on the pious ego trips of those self-righteous fundamentalists pushing the efforts.

I have hear and seen many conservative talk show host, I believe Glenn is one who is truly honest. I worry about his safely daily (he has ticked off most of the powerful people in this country) I pray he will be able to read and enjoy his family as long as possible.

Macular dystrophy can also be caused, in rare cases , by excessive and frequent bouts of crying. This is sometimes further exacerbated by being a whiny, know-it-all beatch. I suspect this is the reason for Beck's ailment, rather than genetics.
Using Vick's to make himself cry on cure probably hasn't helped.

Jeff- more than likely (and more of a rule than the exception) you won't get it- sadly. Most folks (I didn't say all) play the "post-office" game (or whatever you called it when you played it) that they played in elementary school. Start with the first person, whisper a phrase, then see what it comes out as at the end. The vast majority of these posts are based on hear-say and possibly an occasional viewing and/or listening to Beck's show.
Picking out pieces or parts (even if they be large parts) can still be far from what someone said, contextually speaking- and yes, context is everything.

The bias displayed by each of the ignorant loudmouths proclaiming their hate and dislike in these posts is shockingly hypocritical. Beck certainly has his own views, but I do think he makes an attempt to see past those views to the truth. How successful he is at overcoming bias is up for debate. Funny how that story was not on any network any where. The votes were counted in Flordia by the way AFTER the Supreme Court ruling. The DNC, Miami Herold, Washington Post, New York Times all counted the ballots. The votes were counted and Bush did win Flordia by less then 500 votes. The Constitution says when the counting stops not Jessie Jackson and the Rainbow Coalition. As far as Bush sending us to war Congress voted to send us to war as well. John Kerry, Hiliary Clinton, Joe Biden, to name a few voted yes.

My husband and I just read the story about Glen Beck. We both cried!! We never miss his show or his radio show. We are Glen Beck's faithful followers!! Glen has done so much for this country by educating Americans to the right and wrong that is going on in this country!! We credit Glen with being the first to complain and to open the eyes of all American people! We will lift him up in prayer and God does work in mysterious ways. I can tell you one thing, If he ever ran for president 3/4 of Americans would vote for him! We sure would. We have bought and read all of his books and like Glen we share his love of reading! I would read to him anytime!!!! I pray that somethings out there can help him!!

Glenn Beck appeals to lowest common denominator in our country today, spreading hate and paranoia in order to aggrandize himself. The guy's a former disc jockey, Mormon and alcoholic who has recently compared himself to Martin Luther King. A more pathetic, divisive character doesn't exist on television or radio today, with the possible exception of Rush Limbaugh.

Glenn Beck is a crazy person that sells fear and hate to make himself rich and make himself feel better about himself. When you say 3/4...I think its more likely 75% of the country would vote against him. I bet a good portion of the country would revolt and try to overthrow the government if Beck was elected president.
And as long as I'm here, I'll remind everyone that studies have shown prayer has no effect on recovering from illness. Although in one study, the people that were told they were being prayed for actually had more complications after surgery probably because they had anxiety about people praying for them (ie, am I really that sick that you have teams of people praying for me?)
Anyways, I do hope Mr. Beck's illness isn't as bad as it sounds and that he gets better. Luckily he makes a lot of money and can afford to go to the doctor, unlike some of us.

It is amazing how viscious liberals can be. I totally oppose almost everything President Obama stands for, but I respect him as a person and would fight to preserve his right to his beliefs (I am a retired Navy Captain). Why is it that liberals think that conservatives do not have the right to their beliefs? Would they fight to ensure that Glenn Beck has the right to express and exercise his beliefs? Probably 99% would not. That is the difference. Conservatives may disagree with your views, but 99% would fight to the death to preserve your right to have and express those views.

As for suppressing the right to the freedom of expression, you are so ridiculously off the mark. Everyone has a right to their beliefs. However, they shouldn't distort or fabricate facts, which the right wing has been doing plenty of. (i.e. tales of communism, death panels, posting edited videos to change the meaning of what the person said, etc.) It's dividing the country in a frightening way. We VOTED President Obama into office, and the right wing thinks their country was "stolen" from them. They've been throwing mud since the day Obama took office.

Sir, where can you provide examples that all liberals (you imply it in your post) don't want conservatives to have their right to express their ideas? In this day of say what you want on the internet I see a lot of things, and frankly much of it brings the debate to new lows every day. However, I rarely, if ever, see anyone make any comment implying that someone should have their right to free speech taken away from them.

This thread is pretty funny. I have been reading a lot of commentary on how evil Beck is…But what is really interesting is that not one actual example was ever used. It has all been a bunch of generalizations of what is perceived as a typical conservative.
Therefore, I will leave you with another generalization, and that is that Liberals operate on Emotions not facts. I think that is why people have issues with Beck because he makes common sense (logical) decisions and is not inhibited by emotional feelings. Like you, I am retired Navy, I was a Chief. The point I disagree on is the liberals being viscous. Some are just not all. Just as some conservitives are, but not all. When it comes to Glenn Beck and people viscousness, I believe that much of it is brought about through the way he expresses those views. The conservative movement went from political movement to down right lies, distrotion and attacks. Just as in the Shirley Sherrod case that we have all watch unfold over the past few days. Fox News.com broke the story and it was immediately aired on Bill O'rielly's show and everyone on Fox was calling for her resignation. Now that the truth comes out Fox has focussed and is trying to lay blame on the adminstration. When News organizations such as Fox shift from reporting to biased oppinions, it will cause backlash. Not to say that liberals are any better, just look at MSNBC

I would hope at some point that he could actually see both sides of an issue and not be so certain he is right and those opposing his views are evil. I also hope that people who watch his show will realize that he is basically an entertainer who feasts on people's fears. Anyway, I hope he does not go blind but if he does he may gain some compassion for other people who have had to deal with severe disabilities and had to lean on those bad ole democratic social programs in order to remain independent.

Glenn Beck's effect on the United States is to increase paranoia and substitute junk for facts. It sucks that anyone would loose their sight, but I can't help but feel a little karma with this story. Not that I like Rush or Beck. But Rush did not "magically get better". He underwent placement of biaural cochlear implants following a disorder that caused progressive hearing loss. Cochlear implants work very well for people who were hearing prior to placement. With many being able to hear close to normal soon after. I find it hard to believe that anyone would agree with a thing that Glenn has ever said or promoted. He speaks to those people who hate people who are different than them or who loves a woman that decided not to have an abortion but hates the same woman that may need help from the federal government to help feed and clothe that child. He is a sounding board for ultra conservatives who hate people that may need a national health insurance program to keep their families healthy without going broke. He has never done anything good for humanity he is in it for the money and tha's it. His tears were for the fear that his career may be in jeopardy and that's it. Arnold was never hung or even tried for his treason. He eluded capture, joined the British army, and died in London in 1801.
As for Beck, I don't agree with him, but going blind sucks for anybody, regardless of their beliefs.
