'Money is killing us,' Gulf fisherman says

By Elizabeth Cohen
CNN Senior Medical Correspondent

The latest health risk in the Gulf of Mexico is an abundance of money, says one Louisiana  fisherman.

“Money,” says Clint Guidry, acting president of the Louisiana Shrimp Association, “is killing us.”

BP is paying fishermen up to $3,000 a day to help clean up the oil, according to a contract between BP and one of the fishermen obtained by CNN.

He says the nine fishermen who were brought to the hospital while working for BP are unwilling to talk because they fear losing their jobs. The men suffered symptoms such as shortness of breath, irritated nasal passages, nausea and headaches.

“Working for BP is their livelihood, since they can’t fish anymore,” Guidry said. “BP is putting food on their tables. These gentlemen won’t talk publicly because they’re scared for their well-being and scared for their families.”

Graham MacEwen, spokesperson for the petroleum company, says workers have no reason to fear retaliation if they speak out and should feel free to voice any safety concerns to their supervisors.

Several of the shrimpers contacted by CNN declined to talk on the record.

When the clean-up effort first started, BP required those hired to work in their “Vessels of Opportunity” program to sign confidentiality agreements, according to Jim Klick, an attorney representing two fishermen who became ill while working for BP. But he says the clause was taken out after objections from lawyers.

Even those who didn’t sign a confidentiality agreement are scared of retaliation by BP if they speak out, Klick added

“There’s huge concerns about this,” he said.

It’s not clear exactly what’s made the fishermen sick. Guidry says it’s breathing in vapors from a combination of the oil and Corexit, the dispersant being used to break down the oil, but Tony Hayward, the chief executive officer of BP, has another theory.

“Food poisoning is a very big issue,” Hayward said Sunday. “We have to be very mindful of that.”

Guidry was having a cup of coffee Monday morning at a marina in Lafitte, Louisiana, when he heard Hayward talking on CNN. The marina had a pool table.

“I couldn’t believe it. First, he makes our boys sick, and then he insults good Cajun cooking,” he said. “If he’d been right here, I would have shoved the pool cue down his throat.”

These men are right in not talking about BP. "A Fool and his money are soon departed" If someone hires me to work for them I'm not going to say a bad thing about them as long as they are signing my paycheck. These guys are no differant.

Seriously food poisoning? Tony Hawyard is insulting the cajun food I love as well as our good intelligence. It doesn't take a scientest to understand that its the oil and corexit making these men sick. The whole situation makes me sick as well. Houston we need to pull together and make BP own up to their mistakes

Why don't the clean up crews wear vapor masks like the ones with charcoal filtration? It seems like that would help. I know I wear one even when I'm spray painting.

Nooooooo, oil is killing you. You are simply getting paid more than makes sense, to work in oil, so you refuse to do something else, that will not harm you.

Respirators are not expensive and surely being payed $3000 a day could cover their cost.

Food may indeed be the problem if the fishermen are eating the fish caught in the oil spill. Somehow, however, I doubt that this would happen. To me, it seems like BP is just trying to weasel out of more responsobility

half face respirators with the purple volatile organics cartriges should help remove the vapors they are breathing in. like $40 at the hardware store, although they would have to change the cartridges daily or after x hours w/ that much vapor

There is training required by BP as well as added liability that goes along with the fishermen wearing respirators. That's why BP isn't requiring their use.

if your a fisherman in LA, what do you do in this situation? Keep cleaning and face the risk of developing a health issue (minor and major) or do you stop cleaning and maybe preserve your good health? if you have a family to support, i think you would keep cleaning. but it would be a tough decision, indeed

But if you want to do something that can make a difference, identify every darn product these eco-terrorists (BP) produce and refuse to buy it anymore. Only when it really hits their wallets, hard, will they do something of substance. Rest is just posturing and playing the victim.

Never heard of food poisoning making anyone short of breath. The runs and cramps maybe. I know Hayward isn't a medical professional, but the symptoms of food poisoning are usually gastro-intestinal. Oh, and a good Binks respirator with charcoal and particulate filters is around $50 bucks. Get a few packs of charcoal filters and you're still making $2950 a day. I used them spraying polyurethane paint for years that had isocyanites in it. No problem. Couldn't even smell the stuff.

I know many many Fishermen in Cordova and Valdez Alaska that did the same thing that made over three thousand dollars a day after the EXXON Valdez Oil Spill Disaster : Before you feel sorry for some of these Fleecing Masters of Oil Disasters , Mof the Fishermen retired with all that money they made during the Alaska Spill / Plus the greedy Brothers of the Sea where hoping to make Billions and Billions from the Oil Company that hired the Bums over the Law Suits ( Talk about hitting the Lottery ? ) . I worked with many of these Alaskan Fishermen and believe me they are into Free Hand outs from the Government and Oil Company . Plus they are a Lazy bunch because during the Clean up in Alaska many of the Fishermen were mostly Drunk or smoking Pot during the clean up on their $2500 Boats :

So Please Please Stop feeling sorry for the Lazy Bums / Because many of them are Looking for some free bucks ------

I mean they make so much, it def outweighs the health risks, Thinjk about it. They arent even doing anytinh thats considered super hazardous by fisherman's standards. Making 3000 dollars a day some of these fisherman have prob made 40-60k in 20 days!

Say they work for 8 hours thats 300 + dollars, thats more than alot of high end white collar jobs

If i was them i would want this tihng to go on as long as possible, even if it ruins their lively hoods lets do the math.

The "Relief Well" is oging ot take 1-2 more months
now lets just say the avrage fisherman ismaking about 2500 a day

thats a maximum of 60 * 2500 = around 150,000 USD plus ontop of the maybe 20-30k they have already made. If they invest that well they could get a low end job that makes like 40-50k and still have a better and safer lifestyle than fishing for 5+ years

My say: Stop whining and Get a mask or ventilator, if ur making that much A DAY, thats nothing ot complain about

I heard that bp has told workers if they're caught wearing charcoal or chemical respirators...they will be fired. bp is, of course, afraid of the public reaction if workers are seen wearing masks highliting the danger. This would be especially true if people in coastal communities start to smell the stench of raw petroleum and or corexit which was said to be 4 timnes more toxic than raw petroleum.

bp should be made to pay every last person in the gulf states (fishermen, packers, restaurants, boat yards, truckers, and anyone else affected) their full previous income until the damage done to the gulf, the delta, and any other connected facility is completely repaired.

It is amazing that some (Kim) are taking a situation that is affecting so many people from all walks of life and turning it into a partisan issue. I think if one would look hard enough, politicians on both sides would be found with their hands stained by oil money. Yes BP is a foreign company but I doubt that they came in and started drilling without going through the proper procedures so if you want to blame someone maybe look at our government for not being vigilant enough to prevent something like this from happening. As far as the food poisoning comment. He may have not clarified what he may have meant to say, that with all the oil out there it could have contaminated some of the seafood that has been eaten.

What did these unprincipled fisherman think would happen????These kinds of things happen when toss out your integrity, refuse to do what's right and go to work for the very Devil who is stealing your livilihood just for a "paycheck". That does nothing but encourage the Devil to continue in his wickedness, part of which is poisoning these fishermen when BP should be the ones doing this dirty work. But most people are spiritually bankrupt and blind and cannot or will not see the spiritual forces that are behind this. If they did, that would force them to have to repent of their own sins and blindness and seek and submit to the only One who can help them out of this mess! But it's easier to hold on to their idiotic pride and "fear" of not being able to put food on the table and take a paycheck from the Devil. That food on the table won't last long when their dead from having their brains fried by Corexit fumes.

Why the big mystery? There are dozens of qualified industrial hygiene laboratories who could provide air analyses from the areas where oil spill clean-up is performed. A simple proceedure of drawing air through a tube filled with absorbent and analyzed by mass spectrometer. Cost of analysis ~$450 each by commercial lab. Just a few of these analyses would be needed to characterize the air quality as source is the same. It is VERY unlikely to be food poisoning! Hydrogen sulfide (smell of rotten eggs) can be deadly, and hydrocarbon vapors alone can injure lungs.

I'm surprised by the commenters here who lack sympathy/empathy for these people.

BP gets its drilling permit and drills in the gulf. Fair enough; other oil companies do it too, all over the world in international waters. BP is a british company so much of their profits (prior to the clean-up bill at any rate) goes back to britain.

But what about our neighbors in Louisiana? What about our friends in Alabama? Mississippi? Florida? These are Americans who make their living fishing those waters. BP has ended that for the foreseeable future, right?

So they offer them high-paying, extremely important jobs - not just to the fishermen but to everyone living in these good southern states. That's the right thing to do. If a company - whether by accident or by intent - deprive people of their livelihoods, the least they can do is offer alternative work at fair remuneration.

But just because they're making good money today, does that really mean BP has the right NOT to equip them so they don't also get sick?

In other words, they've deprived them of work - which they're trying to make up for. They should not then ask them to work in hazardous conditions without, at least, respirators.

p3n1s even if they make $150k in 2 months, using your math estimates, the gulf will be unfishable for YEARS. How many "low end 40-50k" jobs do you think these fishermen are qualified for?

I'm glad they're making good money because it's going to have to last a very, very, very long time. (And it won't as anyone with kids will understand.)

BP won't allow these workers to wear masks due to IMAGE are you sh* tting me? WHERE is OSHA – the EPA – your Gov – Your Health Dept. NO – it doesn't matter what MONEY these immoral hucksters are paying – Do you want to be maimed – dead or in a coma??

For God's sakes study what happened to 9/11 firemen – police – EMT workers. They were told air was safe. Right and multitudes of them are NOW (middle age) disabled for life – or DEAD. DEAD -You're not taking any greenbacks with you. With NO medical insurance – and these men sick any money will be eaten up in a few weeks. DON'T DIE FOR BP.

A regular air purifying respirator may not be sufficient for protection as some contaminants cannot be filtered reliably. While in the middle of a large "pool" of oil with little breeze the vapors from the oil may be IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health). In fresh, unweathered oil this could happen easily at worker level. When IDLH conditions exist, air purifying respirators should not be used. Also, wearing an air purifying respirator during hot and humid weather and heavy work loads is nearly impossible. The report that workers are suffering respiratory distress should be taken as a warning and not dismissed as food poisoning.

The fishermen are fighting to save the wetlands, their livlihoods and a cultural way of life. And to those of you who think they can just go get another job it's not that east for a myriad of reasons I should hope are obvious.

Many people who have commented are partisans, have never been to a wetland, are not involved in the Gulf Coast in anyway. These men have families, houses and if they are lucky, kids in college. They are also tied to this land spiritually and BP should be giving them money and they should have the option to be a part of protecting the wetlands. They should also be able to do it safely. They were sprayed by dispersants and all of evidence was taken away in the parking lot at the hospital. They have every right to work, protect the wetlands and be protected by their employers from hazards, as well as protected by the EPA as it is their approval that allowed the use of the Obama administrations toxic dispersants.

I have a question about the health risks to the cleanup workers. Earlier today on Ricks List Kyra Philips did a piece where she was out on an oil rig talking to people and asked one of the workers a question, here is the transcript

"00:25:24 >> Reporter: What's the deal with the water spray that's taking place next to the "enterprise"?
00:25:29 >> You can see an offshore supply vessel with water sprayed out of its stern.
00:25:33 As the product is rising up, because we know there's oil coming out of the riser pipe until we get the containment cap on it right now, they're actually putting water over the surface to reduce the volatile organic compounds that come up off the oil that produce inhalent problems for the workers out there.
00:25:50 So, this is actually a safety issue to put water over the top of the oil so the fumes basically don't come up.
00:25:55 >> Reporter: Because when we were flying in, the smell was so strong, it's like fresh tar smell.
00:26:00 >> And one way to reduce that is basically spray water to edeuce the vapors."

So, to my question. Why do they need to take precautions when oil workers are working with the oil spill, and none is taken for those who are cleaning it up?

I recall Tony Hayward claiming the cleanup workers may have had food poisoning and the sickness they are experiencing is not due to the fumes they are breathing while cleaning up the mess.

This transcript came from the following link.

I'm confused. Keep hearing that there is no fishing/shrimping going on in the Gulf. Yet, I saw the President eating seafood while he was down on his last visit on Friday, a spokesperson for the fishing industry saying that the President was given Gulf seafood to take back to the White House and another spokesperson saying that the food is safe to eat... its inspected by the FDA. Others reps of hotels and big name restaurants in New Orleans say the seafood is safe and is inspected by the FDA.

So what's the story. Is there still fishing going on? Or are we just hearing crying by fisherman and others who are trying to cash in on money being offere by BP? Ishere still fishing going on?

    It ain't about the MONEY!
Those affected by this oil catastrophy are in SHOCK– and unable to think long term and completely rational due to SHOCK.
    Personal Story:Chemical Injury
Lost health, Lost job, Lost ability to work. Lost Much.
Worst case scenario is loosing life, and possible, through acute affect, but much more likely due to chronic debilitating diseases brought on by over-exposure to chemical agents.
BP oil cleanup- GET proper RESPIRATOR protection. If you do not wear a respirator then, does that make you a 1/2 party to any future health problems?
Afraid of getting fired for weaing a respirator?
Look and listen to someone suffering with chemical injury onset of 6 years ago.
I had a great paying job, insurance, professional career-all gone.
I cannot work in any useful capacity. Memory damage, iq damage, health damage.
If you are worried about your family, then PROTECT them and leave the d@#% mess to the %$^^&&%'s that created it. You cannot protect your family if you are too sick for any job later on. You can't keep a home, boat, without a job.
If your immunity and health, diet is all superb, it might work out for you, to work the oil mess, but it is a crap shoot. It is a crap shoot for you and your family.
Facts are, innundated areas of the gulf are gone for a long time, and this is far from over.
If you are seriously affected by this Mess, and live, you may find yourself living like myself:
    Fixed income.
    Intolerable incitants
    perfume cologne.
    gas or diesel exhaust.
    common household cleaners.
    air fresheners
    neighbours burning trash
    factories, bodyshops, etc.
Symptoms dependent upon chemical but include: confusion, closing sore throat, lethargy, aggression/anger, indecisive, inability to think to drive-ie. what do I do when the light is red?, fatigue, sleep onset, all kinds of symptoms.
Many other things I can't at moment remember.
Developed allergies, that never before knew I had.
Have very little energy, sleep often and much.
Going to a city makes me tired, lethargic, confused, irritable to extreme- sleep for hours to days afterwards, due to trace contaminants in the air. Liver doesn't unload chemicals so sickness insues- must constantly detox.
100 to 500+ dollars spent many months for unreimbursed health expenses
Multiple Sclerosis onset, probably due to chemical exposure
Resulting weakness, balance, coordination problems, chronically fatigued, intermittent double vision and blurred vision.

It hopefully will not happen to you, but these types of injuries is what your playing with if you do NOT PROTECT YOUR FAMILY BY PROTECTING YOURSELVES. STANDUP AND DO IT. In court the deck is stacked against you, regaurdless of what you think.

If your sick, it is your body telling you to get the h#$$ out of there. Listen to it.

Your way of life may already be lost in the gulf? If so, why stay?
With health you can fish somewhere else or do something else. Without it, your FUbared and dependent on a gov and an oil co. that tell more lies than Pinocheo.
Given a choice, which posistion would you rather be in?

I wish you all wellness, whatever your choice is and hope your results are far better than the worst case scenarios I have outlined. But check out the Exonn Valdez cleanup crew and you will find those that are still ill, if they are still living-some are not. And remember, if your bosses are telling you, "your fired" for not wearing a good respirator mask, ..... it is not to your benefit they are concerned about.
Also, that is a temporary job. Think about the possibility of having to move anyway, why postpone, why risk your family. Children's lungs, immune systems, and neural systems are far more at risk, with far less exposure, if you smell oil, get the hell out.
I cannot say absolutely it is the right move, but it is Common Sense, and it IS what I would do, now knowing what I know about chemical injury. (I could not be anywhere remotely close to that mess now anyway, but I would NOT want my children or a nursing mother around it)
No big decision is easy, and all could be fine, but there are no guarantees. I am not a doctor and most doctors won't back up what I say. I live with an illness many docs won't recognize as existing other than psychosomatic origin.
To be forewarned is to be forearmed: do with this information what you will. It is the best I can do at forewarning. Feel free to pass it on.

One more thing; The respirator image comment someone posted.
Yep, in my opinion, the image bp wants is; that far away the smell is not harmfull and no masks are needed. Requiring/allowing masks accounts to a liability admission issue that the health affects are far more reaching; they won't go there. And, plenty of prostitute physicians around to back'em on it, in court. (I apologize to all prostitutes for the comparison)

I have read all these comments . I cant believe some of this people they have no clue what the fisherman down here go through.Last year we had really heavy rain fall that tuned our saltwater to bracishwater . Those of you who know nothing about shrimping or saltwater fishing. This pushes shrimp and fish futher out to sea where water is much more salter.Because of heavey rain last year we had one of the worst shrimp seasons in years. If you will read up on shrimp migration and breeding you'll learn shrimp migrate in to the salty bays to breed and lay there eggs.A shrimp has an averge life span of about 8 weeks. Then we have to contend with porpuses and sharks that eat holes in our nets to eat our shrimp we're trying to catch .And what they do'nt eat we lose alot through the holes they leave in our nets. Last year in Chactahacee bay fl our season was over after easter with all the rains the shrimp left our bays here in the south.SO we lost money all season lot's of us paying dock rent with no income coming in .The year before that we fought high fuel prices and the shrimp markets paying low prices to the boats for our catch . NOW here comes the oil which is closing our water so we can'nt work again . So some are working for BP to try and pay loans on there boats, mortgages on there homes, feed there familys, leans on there automobiles, andtrying to give there kids a education . YOU say get another job . WHERE? unemployement is at its highest . Here in the south from LA to FL fisherman our out of work motels ,condos, resteraunts, constrution all laying off because of the oil spill . You sit there downing us when your not here facing all of this. YET you wont come rent a condo on a oil covered beach or eat our seafood that you think comes from the oil . The markets pay us 0.60cents to $1.20cents a pound for our shrimp. And you pay $5.00 to $10.00 a pound for them at the market so who's making all the money. See you think you know so much about us but you really do'nt no nothing . We're just hard working americans trying to raise our familys and feed america the best way we know how. GOD BLESS

BY the way there is still shrimp in warehouses that was caught before the oil came ashore. But did you no 60% of our shrimp you eat in resteraunts come frome overseas at really low prices. We have to try and compete wiyh them . If you watched 60 mins you learn overseas shrimp are raised on human waste. SO do'nt eat fresh seafood eat overseas. ask your faverite resteraunt to show you a box there shrimp come in.

I used to fish in Venice in 1981. I'm sure some of you old timers remember a couple boats of watermen in T-Crafts that used to crab I believe it was Southern Pass. Anyhow it was one bay there you could catch a blue crab that had a lobster claw and in the next bay just normla claws. It was weird shit. Anyhow after we left another guy they called him Johnny Duck Egg Johnson went down there fishing and shot a guy that tried to cut his grass. I believe he might have shot at the ground and some pellets hit him I'm not sure, but he went to jail for a while. But this was up in the river my ftaher and I would check anchor nets. Anyhow, if any of you remember who I'm talking about give me ayell patriot9878@gmail.com and tell me what's it like down there now.

Hey $3,000 a day to skim a little oil. YOu guys aren't making a dent in the oil. There's oil on the bottom of the Gulf 4 feet deep. The first storm and you're going to have oil in New Orleans. All they are doing is spreading some money around to keep you guys happy. Cause there is very ltitle oil on the surface. If they let you skim oil for $3,000 a day you'll tell the news people the heck with shrimp and fish this oil spill is the best thing to happen to us. $20,000 a week is one million a year. You boys get paid holidays?

All these boats and more on the way converted from shrimpers to skimmers. Inexperienced fishermen now expert biologists and environmentalists and cleanup experts. I wonder if they have geared up for potential deadly fires that may occur from the flammable volatile liquids in the water that have attached itself to the hulls.
Take caution. Take precaution. Be careful out there all of you, it is not fish you are picking up.
