How Gwyneth Paltrow got into Iron Man shape![]() By Breeana Hare How’s this for a no bull response: When asked how she got in shape to play Pepper Potts in “Iron Man 2,” Paltrow said in her GOOP newsletter, “Well, I am not going to lie, the process was an arduous one.” She’s not kidding. If you want to, as Paltrow put it, “do ridiculous things like be a 37-year-old mother of two and wear shorts,” be prepared for some serious dieting and cardio. Paltrow’s regimen includes a daily hour and a half of dance cardio and strength moves created by her trainer and business partner, Tracy Anderson. But before her sweat session, Paltrow has either a “Think Thin” bar or a “Clean Shake” made from almond milk, blueberries and a scoop each of Dr. Alejandro Junger’s “Move” and “Daily Nourish” drink mixes. Post-workout, Paltrow would knock back a nice tall glass of kale juice – which, once blended with lemon juice and natural sweetener agave nectar, Paltrow considers being akin to “grassy lemonade.” (Sounds delicious, we know) Lunch is light with one of three wrap options prescribed by Anderson, all using a Mountain Valley wrap as a base. There’s an almond butter and chopped dates version and a veggie version, which can be had with or without no salt turkey. Perhaps to keep herself from going insane if she looked at one more wrap, Paltrow created her own lemony grilled chicken recipe to be eaten with steamed veggies or a vegetable salad. Snack time equals more kale juice, a handful of almonds or raw organic kambucha, and dinner contains more kale, in the form of turkey kale soup. Although Paltrow said it’s important to switch up what you eat for each meal for variety, the only other dinner option besides the soup is a chopped veggie salad. The actress stuck with this routine for five days to drop “extra winter weight,” and she said she returns to it anytime she has a specific event coming up. If you want to check out the recipes and see a preview of her workout, head over to Goop.com. Editor's Note: Medical news is a popular but sensitive subject rooted in science. The editor's note says that this blog is "rooted in science"
This diet has not outcome based scientific research
behind it, like virtually all of the faddish diets proposed
by "wellness" nutritional "experts". The diets do help
the nutritionists remain employed and pay some taxes,
so do have some benefit.
Well said Mandy! Everyone has a different view on how to live a healthy lifestyle. That being said, you judgmental people should be ashamed, who cares if she eats designer name brand food... that is her option. As an educated person, we should be able to deduce the fundamental point she and her trainers are making. And who cares if she smokes, no one is perfect!
I think Gwyneth looks great! And for those people that disagree then you people are the culprits for making Hollywood into what it is!
I applaud Gwyneth for being on top of her game and having a great website!
I'll never know why celebrities SUDDENLY think they are experts on EVERYTHING...Health, politics, environmental issues, religion, disabilities..As a celebrity of some note myself, I do get the whole "I-Can-Use-My-Celebrity-To-Bring-Awareness-To-A-Need" type of thing, but that's where it should end. Pompus bores like Oprah who act like they have all the answers to all the world's problems and that every word out of their golden mouths is a gem to be applauded and cherished need to shut-up once in a while. In fact, as much as I appreciate their works, I would like folks like Don Henley, Barbara Striesand, Sting and the like to just concentrate on their jobs and not telling the rest of us how we should live. Liberal Hollywood...UGH!!!
Hey Gwyneth–I'm 54 and the mother of 2 adult sons and I have no problem wearing shorts!! Get real–
I agree with the other Jason, lot's of hype. America still spends billions every year on fitness gimmicks that they think are going to be the answer to their problem. The equation is simple, take in less calories than you burn, you will lose wait, period. People think that their exercise equipment is ineffective when the real problem is their lack of discipline.
@ john (May 7th, 2010 10:46 ET)
Care to elaborate?
I agree completely with Palle re calories in and calories out. I would also like to know the retail cost/price of Paltrow's cuisine on any given day.
Being skinny is not the same as being in shape or being fit. Skinny=sickly
Being fit is something else entirely. This has nothing to do with fitness, just being skinny. Sick people are skinny, not healthy people.
Gwyneth is beautiful! She should be thankful she is blessed with great genetics because five days of this regimen would not work for most people. The diet and exercise described does not appear to be particularly arduous, more like a sensible diet with moderate exercise – something that should be done routinely, not just for special occasions.
I think she looks great all the time, there was no need for this. Why do we expect such perfection from mere human beings? Ever notice that male actors can look however they want...look at Will Ferrell, does he have a perfect body? NO. Does he makes millions? Yup.
Emperor's New Diet. That's the most disgusting thing I've ever heard of eating! If you can drink kale juice (?!?!) more than once and not have to get paid for winning the bet – gee whiz – you are dumb! I saw Ms. Paltrow's mom years ago at a Williamstown Theatre Festival and this blessed, lovely family has nothing to worry about in the weight department. or the looks department either. Perhaps the Paltrow/Danner ladies should return to the Broadway stage in flowing gowns and do a comic period piece and forget Hollywood for awhile! 🙂
This "article" reads like a commercial for the products it mentions.
I stopped going to the snack machine, and started buying fruits. Replaced fast food breakfast with a small cup of bran in the morning. I eat plenty o' steamed veggies. Lost 10 lbs so far. It doesn't take special Kale shakes or wraps. Just don't eat garbage, go swimming, go dancing, go running, lift weights, play a sport, take your kids to the park and chase them around, in short:
go
enjoy
life
...and the rest takes care of itself.
We really don't need Gwen's trainer to tell us how to live. (Do we?)
A study was conducted in 1987 by the University if Stanford that found strong evidence suggesting that workouts are more effective than dieting. Of course that was 10+ years ago and the scientific community has evolved and expanded many information about working out. But you have to eat, each person is differ in calories consume.
I used to weight about 170, and I lost an extra 5 pounds to that. And i can tell you it has to do more with exercising, not dieting. But do take a protein shake. And the results have been showing. I look different physically, and psychologically. Is flattering how your community respons to your disciplinarian habits. Is cool.
Is tough, it ain't no joke. And I did it the hard way. But honestly, workout is more effective.
Mountian Valley wraps? I prefer Hidden Valley Ranch!
I am extremely surprised by all the vicious commentes targetting Gwyneth Paltrow. Guys wake up and smell the flowers. She is just sharing her diet (you don't have to do it) , she is sharing her exercise routine(you don't have to do it) and get this stupid notion out of your heads that an Actor or an Artist is also automaticaly a role model.
Thye are not and they do not claim to be. So to conclude; it's imature and plain stupid to draw all these conclusions from a small article of an actress that does promotion for her movie. GROW UP !!!!
If any of you are interested there is a really fantastic blog series on healthy eating at the link below. A lot of the information in interesting, and definitely not what we grew up thinking was "right:" It's also exceptionally well written!

Greens... totally good for you... meats as well. Grains not so much. There is SO much we have to learn about ourselves and what is *truly* healthy... not what media/ Hollywood/ politics has told us is healthy. Starving yourself for any period of time, and then spiking your insulin levels?? TERRIBLE!!! And what's worse is it's a terrible message to send to women of all ages. The info in this CNN article is at best- worthless and even dangerous fitness nutrional advice.
Agave nectar IS high in calories but does not make your blood sugar spike, which is what actually causes your body to store fat. So Agave nectar ISN'T as bad as high fructose corn syrup!!
I am a personal trainer, and alot of the comments are spot on! You are NOT going to get far lifting no more than three pounds. It has to at least challenge the muscles!! As far as the diet part, you have to find something you can basically stick to for the rest of your life. Temporary changes mean temporary results. This is not to say that you cannot indulge occasionally...even I do that! The only time the weight should be that low is if the reps are very high, but generally it should be a challenge. On another note, kudos to the 68yr old for staying in shape!! Thats fantastic!
Haven't seen Iron Man two yet but I thought she was great in Iron Man One. Concerning her workout and nutrition regimen......sounds better than being sedentary and eating MacDonalds.
Ugh– those who are jumping to assanine assumptions based on this article, let's keep in mind a few things:
1. This lady was ASKED what she did- I somehow doubt she sought out the press to tell them on her own.
2. Because she wasn't able to break the ADDICTION of smoking until she had kids and she may smoke later in her life, you assume that everything she does is unhealthy?
3. Nowhere in the article did it mention her day to day habits for an actual basis for how she lives her life.
4. She detoxes to fit into celeb outfits, is naturally thin, and doesn't like to work out for an hour and a half a day– what a horrible person!!! Give me an $^&&** break people. Most people don't work out and more than half who do HATE IT. You're going to chastise her for honesty? Shut up please.
5. Who cares? Anyone who actually copies celebrities is too stupid to breath in the first place. Parents need to take responsibility for who their children perceive as role models. These famous people should not have to do anything but be themselves. If they choose to use their fame for a political platform, they should expect further scrutiny, but we as the public have absolutely no right holding these people to a higher standard. If you have such an issue with it, don't go see movies, buy them, or pay in any way to support the industry you clearly despise.
This is a crummy commercial!
This woman had to diet to slim down from 115 to 110 pounds. What a bad example for young women.
A little mis-leading. These articles are to promote the movie, not a healthy life style. This is a crash diet and simply not good for you. However if you are walking the red carpet and need to keep the advertizers happy, well that is different story. Sure this will make you loose he weight, but that is the kind of weight you will gain back and then some.
10 to 1 Jason the expert who won't be fooled here is probably 40 or more pounds overweight himself.
Who's fat........You fat?....Not me, It's calories in-calories out folks. Simple physics. She works out a little and loses a little (she doesn't have much to worry about to begin with). If most Americans got off their a$$ and did normal things like mow your own lawns, wash your own cars and clean/maintain your own homes or take up biking or other activities they wouldn't have to worry about packing any weight on. I have to work out just to put weight ON.
I have a great diet and it works for everyone. I call it " The get Diet".
#1 Get off the McDonalds.
#2Get off the Doughnuts.
#3 Get off the Couch.
Works great and will help you lose some of that tonnage you are toting around and is killing you.
well said Tee. she just answered a question people. chill out and do your thing. minus the hating.
Joe,
This is not for the longterm. Obviously you can't do this diet and expect to last forever, just like every other fad diet. If you want to lose weight for good you need to exercise regularly and eat right & eating right doesn't have to mean cutting out every kind of food that people say is bad for you, it is eating small portions & only eating the "bad foods" once in a while.
Wow, so when will GP's personal chef, trainer, and business partner come to my house and set up a personal training regimen and cook my meals for me? Answer: never since her fees are probably more then I make in 10 years (I knew I should have been an actor).
I am surprised all she does to train for her Ironman is drink kale and do dance aerobics, don't you need to spend some time on a bike??
Yea Gwyneth! – kombachas and kale are fabulous – you're right on target and certainly an inspiration on what really taking care of your self can do!
@ John C (May 7th, 2010 15:34 ET)
No, I'm very fit. I eat well and exercise regularly. No artificial products, just what Mother Nature gives me.
What is the basis for your guess?
What do you mean being skinny is sickly? That's frankly BS, I am a 22 year old male who has always been skinny or thin whatever you call it, and I am perfectly healthy, being fat is sickly.
For those of you saying this sounds like an article used to just advertise the products, if they didn't give the names of the products she used, PEOPLE WOULD ASK. Don't be idiots.
She is always positive and looks and feels great inside and out. You people are negative bores!
Hey guys and gals, she is pretty sharp and knows enough to speak diplomatically and with conscience on just about any subject -for her dietary preferences see her choice of regular macrobiotic meals in all instances of choosing good health over fad or freaky foods
Whatever she's doing...it works!
Well, Gwyneth sure had a head start on shaping up. There was not much fat to burn off in the first place. If you like kale juice, knock yourself out. If not, any combination of green leafy vegetables will be just as good, or better. It is ridiculous how many people earn a very good living selling miracle diets to celebrities. As for Kambucha, my grandfather drank it every day and died aged 78 on Sunday. If he stuck with tea instead, he may not have made it past Friday.
You want to know the secrets to losing weight?
1. Stop drinking soda... diet or regular. You will see a result in 1-3 weeks
2. Get off your rear and do something other than sit in front of the computer
3. Eat healthy foods. A good rule of thumb is, "If it comes in a box, jar, can or wrapper, it's probably unhealthy for you."
4. If your great grandmother wouldn't know what it is, you probably shouldn't be eating it.
Mankind survived thousands of years without preservatives... maybe eating strictly from the produce, seafood, meat, dairy and bakery section is the fastest and easiest way to a healthy life.
I don't mind GP on the whole... this article has missed out the part where she admits she normally is not a good 'dieter'. She really enjoys her food.. and admits she can only ever occasionally do this for 5 days only!...so in that respect she is a better role model than most.
What does annoy me though, is that in the original GOOP newsletter, it explains she gets up at 7am and drinks green tea, has the breakfast, then does this 90 min workout from 8am-9.30am. There's no mention of what she does with the kids all morning! Does she even get time to say "Hi" to them? I get up at 7am too but have kids to dress, get to school etc and I'm just getting back home from the school drop-off by the time Gwyneth's done!
AND by the way J Powers, just because someone does not have the perfect figure, it does not mean that they are on the couch eating McDonalds and doughnuts. I'm sure that the Williams tennis gals don't do that, but they are never going to shrink to Gwyneth's size. Genetics plays a BIG part and it is ignorance to assume that anyone with any flesh on them must sit around eating junk food.
God I wish I was training for a movie and my job was to work out and eat right...i'd look hot too!
ngn – Mercola did lump all Agave sweetner's when he described them as you mentioned. How ever the lone different Agave and best of breed to my mind is Young Living Essential Oil's Agave very low glycemic and a cut above the other stuff on the market.
I guess I have a problem with women who are overly skinny to begin with promoting diet regimens. I have all the respect for wanting to be in better shape but the diet in the article above should not be done for more than a few days. I am not clear on how many five days in a row Ms. Paltrow meant. Also, I don't see the muscle that I keep hearing about on article after article of her. I am much heavier and you can definitely see my muscle that isn't bulky at all. I believe you need more than three pounds to lift, sorry.
Why viewers still make use of to read news papers when in this
technological world the whole thing is presented on net?
I really like what you guys are up too. This sort of clever work and coverage! Keep up the wonderful works guys I've included you guys to my personal blogroll.
