When will we see a herpes cure?As a feature of CNNhealth.com, our team of expert doctors will answer readers' questions. Here's a question for Dr. Gupta. From Lloyd Bartley, Bowling Green, Kentucky “How close are scientists to developing a cure for herpes, figuratively speaking will we be seeing a break through in 10, 20, or even 30 years?” Answer: Well, Lloyd, there is good news and bad news on the herpes front. The good news: Researchers have made serious strides and now better understand the mechanism behind herpes outbreaks. The bad news: There is very little funding for that research. After receiving your question we reached out to a leading herpes expert, Bryan Cullen, the director at the Center for Virology at Duke University. Cullen is hopeful that a cure for herpes could come within 10 years, once funding hurdles are crossed. Nearly one in five people over age 12 in the U.S. is affected by herpes. It is caused by a virus - either the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both strains can cause genital herpes, but HSV-1 usually infects the mouth and produces cold sores. Despite funding challenges, Cullen and his team are inching closer to a cure. They conducted a study recently that identified the pathway herpes takes as it infects. They now know how herpes embeds itself into the cells and how it eludes treatment. Now that they have honed in on the physiology of the disease - and its triggers - researchers believe they are steps closer to creating drugs that could cure herpes. While we wait for a cure, there are drugs out there that can at least suppress herpes. Three antiviral drugs: acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir are commonly recommended to quell outbreaks. A physician might recommend taking these drugs when an outbreak occurs to quiet symptoms; or taking them continuously to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak. And of course the best way to avoid spreading herpes is to abstain from sex, but if you are sexually active, engage in safe-sex practices such as using condoms. Stephanie, it's a lilttle more tricky, but you can still find someone who loves even if you have Herpes. Most of us are afraid of rejection, being judged or simply other people knowing about our condition. Also you can catch herpes even if you use a condom.
It's a lot more tricky Stephanie. Matter of fact it is all a trick. Don't underestimate the power of truth. Every cure and every thing that is good relies on TRUTH. If you don't demand truth all you will get is marketing ploys and greed. If medicine relied on truth they would be curing herpes right now. Does medicine have the truth and refuse to use it? Well, you will have to be the judge of that.

Firstly congratulations, you need to consult your doctor I have read information saying if you are pregnant it would be beneficial to be on antivirals to ensure you do not have an outbreak whilst giving birth but everything will be fine 🙂

The fact is, actions must be taken to end suffering from any diseases. Your signature on Paul's petition here and herpsters a few comments higher is free for you and a reasonable action. You need to sign the petitions but you also need to be aware of how much money is already available for herpes research. There is a surplus supply of money for herpes research. There is enough money donated to Duke and University of Florida to fund herpes research until 2020. The cry for more funding is such a perfect answer to medical research, it gives them an EXTREMELY profitable excuse to not come up with a cure or worthy treatment. They say, "we don't have enough money" to come up with an effective treatment and people pour money in to the apparent failing research.
You need to sign the other petitions because you do not know whether my comment here is factual or not, but don't fail to cover all your bases. Take the time to sign all the petitions. My petition does not label you with herpes and it too sends letters to the house of representatives. My petition does not require one dime for research it only requires unity by people who would like to see cures made available that cannot be patented and sold to you as medicine.

Check your facts. Dr. Cullen has received about that amount. NOT DR. BLOOM. Plus, the money is distributed in increments. It does cost millions of dollars to develop a drug, but marketing a drug is different from drug development. Marketing drugs will cost far more than developing a single drug. Stop trying to confuse people.
If 1 in 5 Americans suffer from this, then we are talking approximately 50 million people! Probably more, as some have probably not reported it and have not been officially diagnosed. In any event, I am sure that most of these 50 million people would be willing to donate $5 to find a cure. Isn't there a "Herpes Society" like the "Cancer Society" where we could all donate money to help fund research?!

In the early '80s there was lots of effort and money directed at finding a cure for herpes. Then HIV/AIDS came along and there went all the virologists/immunologists, lab space, and funding. Since herpes rarely causes fatalities even if untreated and HIV/AIDS has a near-universal mortality rate if untreated herpes will not likely see many resources dedicated to it's treatment/elimination until after a cure has been found for HIV/AIDS.

There has to be a cure out there if you just combine everything might work like if take a vitamine E jell pill take the liquid out you can use that which is good for skin mix that with achohol and protrollium jelly and everything thats on the market and freeze it to about 28 degrees it wont freeze because of the alcohol and it being cold would make it dormant.

Hi No Dynamiclear does not work I have tried every product out there its a load of baloney!!! I think its something like $90 a bottle what a rip off!!! The best stuff ever to use on a facial cold sore is Lomabrit its a german cream and you can use a lomabrit which has sunscreen aswell I went on a sunny holiday and could tan for hours by using lomabrit I would highly reccomend you check it out

There is a huge focus on better treatments for AIDS and this is a great idea. Much less attention, if any, is given to a disease that affects MANY more people worldwide – HERPES. Notwithstanding it's painful effects, blisters, sores, stigma, etc. It has been proven to lead to AIDS, yes it increases one's chances of acquiring AIDS threefold. Further, it has been linked to Alzheimers as well.
In the last 30 years, since Valtrex, there hasn't been a single drug to hit the market to prevent or treat Herpes sufferers. Several researchers believe they may be able to cure the disease (Bryan Cullen at Duke and David Bloom at Florida); however, they don't have sufficient funding to adequately pursue.
Genital herpes affects up to 20 percent of the population over 18 and Facial Herpes affects as much as 90 percent of the people over age 50.
This needs some attention andn I hope you will do some research and place a story in your paper about this.

I have read many of these responses.. and when one of you comes across this site typing in google the cure for herpes ..you will stumble across all of these poor suffers. First let me say i got the bug when i was 19, im 22 now.. and i don't have if any breakouts.. my back and my forehead... but its no big deal. When i first found out.. i went into a coma.. a madding depression for almost a year.. i stopped talking to friends and family i thought my life was over. i got hsv-1 when i was about 10 from a friend who drank off my water and now im 18 i had stopped getting them for a couple years but now im getting them every couple months i think its because of smoking weed because for the past couple years ever since i been smoking it everyday ive been getting them every couple months, they really need a cure for it because it just ruins ur life its always on your mind 24/7 and whenever i get one i wont walk out the door, LITERLY, they really need a cure i would pay any amount of money for it seriously i cant even imagine how good life would be without this horrible disease, seriously cant even imagine...
A cure can be profitable, so drug companies would not be discouraged from finding one. But, it's much easier to research ways to suppress actions in the body than eliminate infected cells, especially when there's dormancy present. But the idea of causing all dormant virus-infected cells to become active so that they can be killed off sounds fabulous. There are non-profit organizations that fund research for all kinds of diseases. There's no reason there shouldn't be one for herpes. Don't wait for money to come from the government. Get the millions of dollars people like you or me (with or without infection) would be willing to donate.
The one-in-five adults statistic refers to those with genital herpes. Several sources say 80-90% of adults are infected with oral herpes. Since any of those can infect another person through intimate contact, then everyone with whom these 80-90% of adults are intimate are at risk. Note that children who get cold sores may have gotten the virus during childbirth from their mothers, even if they (mother and child) were asymptomatic for years prior.
If you are infected, don't let your infection prevent you from finding happiness. There are dating sites specifically designed for you so you don't have to have the unpleasant conversation. It's known from the start.

I just wanted to add what others have previously stated, "this is capitaistic greed at its finest." Because people are willing to spend a couple hundred dollars, every month or every herpes outbreak" these rich drug companies are going to recieve revenues from the sale of their treatments which only manage the virus and its syptoms. So basically these already super rich drug companies are guarenteed a payment every so often in regards to herpes treatment, as long as those people live! Guranteed revenues for the duration of a person's life, wickedly sick!! I hope the good work people are doing in eradicating the Herpes viruses-when actualized-are available to all with minimal or no costs!!! Down with these corporate leeches making continous money off of our pain and suffering, for shame!

When i was 18 (30 yrs ago) during my 1st encounter with a girl the same age as me I was infected with oral herpes...I dunno which type,all i know is I have tiny white heads in the corners of my mouth on my lips....I had great teeth, but now going to the dentist has become so embarrassing to me I have let that go to the point of no return.... Without hesitation I can say this dreadful virus has kept me from living a normal life,no children,never been married,family members treat me like a leper.. Depression is my best (worst) friend..... Ironically the girl that infected me was killed in a car crash several years later, poor girl, but stopped its spreading on that end.......I on the other hand i`m sure,during my many drug induced encounters of my past have done my part in its spread.....If you ever met me you would never know, but its like a voice always in my head, If I could only turn back time,I have been saying my entire life......I hate this disease and what it has done to my life, its like being in prison.......

for coldsores – campho Phenique gel is the greatest. Look for the label that says "with drying action" For the genital – soaking in Epson salt helps. As does Hydrogen Peroxide – applied to the infected area.
I have read a lot of comments on here about no one wanting to fund a cure because treatment is too profitable. I know for a fact that at least 20 percent of the adult population wants a cure. You know how much money can be raised by 40 million people. And as far as curing it goes, new cases are still going to occur for drug companies to cure. So its not like drug companies still couldn't make money from the new cases of herpes. It's just going to take someone with some influence to tear down the social stigma and raise awareness about the disease. We just need someone that is going to organize a herpes cure movement. Just like celebrities that speak for cancer or AIDS. When forty million people want something. There is absolutely no reason why they shouldn't get it. To say you would rather see that money spent another way is just tells me you don't have herpes. Becuase it may not be life threatening, but it is emotionally devastating. I am 100 percent positive if the doctors at Duke advertised that they needed funding they would have enough money to have a cure by 2012. I would hand over my life savings for a cure.
i completely agree, i previously posted my story and wrote similar judgement to yours. im going n 23 i got it when i was 20 and he denied it completely but i live in manhattan to much pressure so i havent dated since and my doctor says i couldve got it from my 1st who cheated on me, but any way i donno why no one is speaking up no one is making a movement i donated.

They surly have the funding for a cure but where is it, is it just all something to make them feel better that they have an outlet for their cancer. I hate to be Debbie Downer but I dont see a cure for herpes coming to light, herpes is something that society sticks in the back of the closet. it started when I was 17 I had jus lost my virginity and yea i did a dumb move tha girl ripped the condom of because it broke and we continued a short period after my penile area became red I became nervous thinkin maybe I jus have a rash so i webnt to the doctor and he told me it was genital herpes without a blood test and gave me some antibotics I fell to the floor on my knees and cried like a little baby to hear such news is more than anyone in the world can handle it got so bad that i became bipolar and a manac depressant and also had anxiety problems there is no way to really explain what one person feels when they hear that they have genital herpes the thoughts that run through your head the emotions you cant control and there are only a few words that haunt me THE WORDS THERE IS NO CURE YOU WILL HAVE THIS FOR LIFE that is the only thing that can bring a man too his knees and cry the things you think about first Im gonna be single for the rest of my life how will I ever be able to tell a girl I like that I have genital herpes how will i ever have kids obvouisly you dont want your children to have it and the final thought is life really worth living anymore I tried so many times to take my own life but I couldnt always thinkin about my single mother raiseing my siblings alone the thought that im the first born im the man of the house now I have responsiblities however the doctor gave me meds and after two years we conducted another blood test and he said I have good news and bad news the good news you dont have herpes 2 the bad news you have herpes 1 the joy that you get after you hear that is like no feeling in the world its like you finally got your life back its like god gave you a second chance at life now I am 23 years old and had a partner who was a compolsive liar and after intercourse the second day I had a cut on my forskin and it looked like something that I was not hopeing for at all I immediately started crying screamin at her wat is this wat did you do to me who did you get it from where who how and she of course did not cheat so i said if im going through this you have to be there to hear the news I will not endure this alone we went to the doctor and he gave me some signs of relief saying that it is not herpes its a yeast infection and boy that thing didnt go away for 2 months even with meds finally it went away my girlfriend who is now my ex packed her bags and lied and said she was going to visit her parents she went to greece and said thats it its over im stayig here now that she is gone after we broke up 4 months later it came back now im doubting its a yeast infection and sidein more with its gotta be genital herpes but i dont have the heart to go to the doctor and get blood tests done Im scared of results and what i might do to myself everytime I see it there i have panic attacks anxiety depressed wanting to die I dont even wanna go to the bathroom anymore cuz i know its there and then it goes away and comes back and goes away and comes back its been two months it has left and now im seeing redish

after reading these comments my heart was instantly broken, i wanted to cry for all of you. trust me, i know your pain, but like someone had mentioned earlier god loves u still and there is nothing he cant do, just keep praying and have faith, my sister told me thather friends uncle was on his death bed from aids, and the power of a praying team had prayed over a hankerchief and the man recieved it in africa, and he was cured. he had no aids the docs and everyone was shocked. so there is hope your life is not over just keep the faith and keep praying!

the thing is that if they are infected they arent going to want to come out and say so and create a bill and funding because like always they will become the outcast and the leper. All their colleagues will know that they have the virus and steer clear just like they do to me.
The world isn't over I try not to think so. I have a cold/sore that developed 2 days ago I have been managing it. I bought manuka honey and lysine recently to help control if I do have the virus herpes 1 I still have to get checked, its hard to because I dont have insurance and I just moved here to New York 7 months ago. I live with HPV and Mrsa, so for all you people trying living with all that and trying to finsih college and get my priorities straight.
