When will we see a herpes cure?As a feature of CNNhealth.com, our team of expert doctors will answer readers' questions. Here's a question for Dr. Gupta. From Lloyd Bartley, Bowling Green, Kentucky “How close are scientists to developing a cure for herpes, figuratively speaking will we be seeing a break through in 10, 20, or even 30 years?” Answer: Well, Lloyd, there is good news and bad news on the herpes front. The good news: Researchers have made serious strides and now better understand the mechanism behind herpes outbreaks. The bad news: There is very little funding for that research. After receiving your question we reached out to a leading herpes expert, Bryan Cullen, the director at the Center for Virology at Duke University. Cullen is hopeful that a cure for herpes could come within 10 years, once funding hurdles are crossed. Nearly one in five people over age 12 in the U.S. is affected by herpes. It is caused by a virus - either the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both strains can cause genital herpes, but HSV-1 usually infects the mouth and produces cold sores. Despite funding challenges, Cullen and his team are inching closer to a cure. They conducted a study recently that identified the pathway herpes takes as it infects. They now know how herpes embeds itself into the cells and how it eludes treatment. Now that they have honed in on the physiology of the disease - and its triggers - researchers believe they are steps closer to creating drugs that could cure herpes. While we wait for a cure, there are drugs out there that can at least suppress herpes. Three antiviral drugs: acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir are commonly recommended to quell outbreaks. A physician might recommend taking these drugs when an outbreak occurs to quiet symptoms; or taking them continuously to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak. And of course the best way to avoid spreading herpes is to abstain from sex, but if you are sexually active, engage in safe-sex practices such as using condoms. Dr. Cullen is in the very early stages of research. Not even close to animal trials and hasn't started studying his test in mice. It will be a good 10 years if or before we will see results from his research as we know. I will still support his research as well as Dr. Bloom.

I am appalled and the woefully inadequate amount of funding researchers are getting for this. This disease ruins lives and research funding must be increased. There appears to be many promising treatments or even cures on the horizon; however, they cannot proceed without funding. I am so tired for waiting for these pharmaceutical companies to do something. I just found out that i got genital herpes from my boyfriend who performed oral sex on me. We didn't really research what a cold sore was and he had it since he was a child so we didn't think anything of it. WE ALL SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Millions of people suffer from it, can we all donate a couple of dollars and fund the scientists to help find a cure? Nobody deserves this disease, I say this because I plan on having children one day and a first time mother shouldn't worry about transmitting something to an innocent child.

I'm willing to teach and train people free of charge for the sole purpose of exposing cures for diseases medicine cannot cure, that includes herpes and by no means is limited to herpes.
There are people willing to promote training sessions in southern California and Florida. I insist on having at least 4 people to train and they will need at least 6 people who want to be cured of any diseases, including herpes. If you want to learn to cure yourself and others I will teach you if you want to be cured of herpes or any disease I will see to it that the people being trained can and do cure you.
You do not have to mention herpes or any disease. True Cures does not care what medicine and science calls your signs and symptoms because your immune system doesn't care. The only thing that matters in regards to being cured is the fact that you are created with a powerful and super effective immune system and YOU can control your immunity. You must not know what seperates you from the scientist. It's their extensive knowledge of the human body and the herpes virus itself. There are people who support your method of trying to cure herpes. Then, there are those who support the scientist. Please, stop being so negative. People will make their own choices.

You just tried to convince the people here that scientist have an extensive knowledge of the human body! NOT TRUE AT ALL. You see, Propaganda B, with knowledge comes cures. So either science does not have more extensive knowledge of the human body and the virus thought to cause herpes due to their inability to cure herpes or they do have the extensive knowledge you say they have but ARE TOO CORRUPT to use their knowledge for good!
Either way propaganda B you are the one here convincing people to put their faith in a failing or corrupt science. The facts.........
1) though herpes can be uncomfortable and irritating herpes is virtually harmless (leave out the fear propaganda)
2) Duke and U of H have yet to come up with a cure or reasonable treatment despite the unmeasurable amounts of money donated so far in the past 100 years.
3) Stick with the fact that there is no real or true evidence that herpes sores or OBs are caused by a virus!

In college here and i have had a girlfriend for 2 years, except when we took a break for a week. I think i may have contracted the disease over that week. I have not yet been tested because the only thing that happened was everytime i had protected sex with my girlfriend, it burned and skin would turn red then dry up. I first thought i might be allergic to latex but without a condom it did the same thing, and now im worried. Your symptoms are the same symptoms as Jock Itch and yeast infections. If you are with the same girl you can be getting yeast every time you are with her. If you are with a different girl you can be aggravating your own fungal issue with the activity of sex as in the sweating and such.
If you are having sex after drinking and staying up late that too could cause a fungal flare up causing the signs and symptoms you are describing.
Use and keep some over the counter fungicides on hand for yourself and have your girl do a monastat yeast kit. Treat yourself for jock itch. Jock itch can easily cause the body to produce the antibody that would make you test positive in a blood test for herpes.

David, what if the swab test comes back positive?
Thank you Freddy for asking a very important question that will put you and everyone else on track for being cured.
A swab or culture test does not detect the actual virus. It is a chemistry reaction test. They add a dye and if it turns the right color your life is ruined not because of the almost harmless pathogen you have been told is a virus but because of the stigma and propaganda. The fact is, if a doctor would lie to their patients and tell them they tested negative it would probably be a 50% chance that they would never have another OB or rash again. The stress of being diagnosed with herpes weakens the immune system more than any other factor.
Back to the swab test. The test relies on indicators and the test itself more than likely says on the bottom of the test that it does not mean you have herpes when you test positive. The test is only a tool to aid a doctor's opinion.
THE FACT IS Freddy, the test can be picking up any of a hundred bacteria, viruses, and fungus. The other important fact is no one every actually sees a herpes virus and if they can't see it THEY have no idea if it is causing OBs or not.
Herpes testing is nothing more than pure speculation and opinion. There is NO way to know if any kind of herpes testing from swab, culture, PCR or blood testing is picking up a virus or a fungus. Antibodies are a part of your immune response and the antibody most often associated with a positive herpes test could be a result of ANY type of immune response including jock itch in men and yeast infections in women.
Freddy, if you had a swab test that came back positive the test turned a certain color indicating the dye picked up something, the question is what did it pick up? More than likely it was a fungus, but it could have been a bacteria or even a slight chance of it being a virus either way it is easily cured if you do not fall for the hype and fear propaganda.
A harmless pathogen that is the leading cause of blindness in developed countries. That's how harmless it is.
Behave yourself Propaganda B. There is not ONE STITCH of PROOF that herpes causes blindness in any country! Post the link to such nonsense and I will shred it with truth and facts and expose it as pure fear propaganda.
For those of you who aren't offended about discussing facts and who are really trying to understand what they are told is herpes, there is ABSOLUTELY no evidence that herpes is a virus. And there is no evidence that it causes blindness.
For the record, fungicides are the most effective medicine for herpes. Topical over the counter fungicides might no work perfect on all sore and they certainly wont cure herpes BUT they will work as well much much better than antivirals and Lamisil tablets from a doctor will cure herpes every single time.
So lets keep with the fact here propaganda B. If you have a problem with people in third world countries going blind sign my petition.
ONE THING FOR SURE, the only reason why someone will not sign my petition is because they are against cures that cannot be patented. And you will not notice Propaganda B's signature or mark on it. Take a look at the petition and see if the people here begging for money for their medical scams have signed it. They won't. They aren't here to end your suffering they are here to ensure your suffering and take more and more of your money the way they have for more than a hundred years.

One last comment! Of course pharmaceutical companies most likely are the reason it's taken so long for a cure to be supported. Next, why support a cure when people respond well to antivirals? Now, the herpes virus is developing resistance to antivirals. What's next? Pharmaceutical businesses are being forced to develop either new treatment or a cure. Let's not forget for years scientist have ignored the latency stage of this virus. Why? The molecular structure of this virus changes in the latency stage, making this the #1 reason why this virus could never be cured. Well, good news! After several years of extensive research, Dr. Bloom has developed the cure. It's only a matter of time before a cure comes about. Why would pharamceutical companies support the vaccine if they are content with antivirals? If I'm not mistaking vaccines would put the antivirals on the back shelf.
Hi David, the test came back positive for type 1 and negative for type 2. This is a genital infection...Does your opinion still stand?

There are likely a dozen pathogens that can show up as Type 1 if the test is detecting any pathogens at all. You see Freddy it is extremely rare for sores to test positive in the first place. With all the million sores out there being swabbed only a few turn the right color to supposedly indicate a type of herpes but herpes testing is completely and 100% unreliable and a POSITIVE HERPES TEST DOES NOT MEAN ANYONE HAS HERPES, even your doctor will agree 100% with that. You may have to pin them down and let them know you didn't just fall of the turnip truck like propaganda fear mongers here.

You will notice that neither Dr. Bloom or Dr Cullen have signed the petition, nor have either one contacted me about the cure they could be giving each and every one of you here with herpes. I will post the email to them both that has gone unanswered. You will notice that Martin has not signed the petition (link above) indicating that Martin is only interested in cures U of F can patent and sell.
You will also notice only 10 people have signed the petition and those of you with herpes wonder why there is no cure. Why should U of F or Duke cure you when you play right into their hands and donate and donate and donate and donate and donate while Duke and U of F continue to ignore cures that cannot be patented and they have surely scrapped a hundred medical cures already during their research for the perfect drug that will help control herpes without curing it.

Dear Mr Bloom and Mr Cullen,
I have already contacted Bryan about existing and consistent cures for all types of HSV that cannot be patented and sold. I am now taking a moment to contact you both so that I can let people know that I am indeed in contact with you guys. I will continue to stay in contact with you because according to the CNN blog at (website removed to prevent moderating) you guys are the leading herpes researchers of the times and would like you to be aware of cures that already exist for herpes but cannot be patented and sold.
According to the blog, University of Florida and Duke are both on the verge of major breakthroughs in curing herpes and the only thing said to be in your way is lack of funding hence the demands on the blog for more donations for your work. Now, I for one am willing to concede that both Duke and University of Florida have always been on some verge of a breakthrough or another for the past 100 years without every really breaking through so I feel it is important that the consumers and the Universities are made aware of existing cures that cannot be patented for herpes and other diseases. I know medicine and the media ignore cures that cannot be patented and I like to assume as such the cures are consequently hidden from you two and that you guys are indeed more interested in cures than profits so here I am making you aware of cures for herpes that cannot be patented.
It is my intentions to share the cure with you guys, but due to the obvious corruption of medicine and media I cannot sit back and assume this email will be taken seriously so I have sent a copy of it to several media sources so they can also be made aware of cures that cannot be patented and therefore ignored and if they too choose to ignore the cures they can be held accountable as well. I will use this email for proving that the media, Duke University and University of Florida are indeed aware of cures, whether you choose to investigate them or not. You see the only way I am discredited is by the belief that if I was telling the truth about cures, you guys would be selling them and the media would be reporting them. This is why I am putting the ball in your courts. You can now prove that you guys or the media is truly interested in cures that cannot be patented and sold.
My research (which has lead to consistent cures for diseases such as herpes, showing it is stronger than your research) has shown that a person with nail fungus (which you should already be aware is extremely common in people diagnosed with herpes) can also cure herpes with the prescription medicine Lamisil tablets used to cure nail fungus. I'm still waiting to hear of a case where Lamisil doesn't cure herpes or causes ill side effects. So far it is a perfect cure for herpes, but True Cures cures almost everything in the process of curing herpes which is why I do not use Lamisil to cure my clients of herpes, I use the immune system with complete consistency and it takes less than two weeks. In a nutshell I use the same immune response that powers the immune response behind every immune response you guys see in your blind studies. If need be for demonstration purposes, I can take a sugar pill and make it completely consistent at curing herpes because as you know the sugar pill has no healing qualities, it is the individual's own system generating the relief during your blind studies. True Cures doesn't stimulate relief, it stimulates an immune response that eliminates the pathogens known to cause the outbreaks which makes it a cure instead of relief.
I have BCC'd several people from the blog above and numerous other potential clients who are waiting to be cured so they are aware that I am no longer assuming Duke and University of Florida isn't interested in cures that can't be patented. I didn't do it to imply anything about you guys or your work but to imply that I am willing to do my part to ensure that Duke and U of F is aware of True Cures for herpes and to make you aware personally. I have been very hard on Duke and the University of Florida on the blog and I would be grateful to be proven wrong about my assumptions. True Cures is the act of controlling the immune system and its immune responses to cure diseases medicine cannot or will not cure. To control an immune response, there must be communication between myself and my test subjects so no blind studies. The point of the challenge is that I can see to it that anyone wishing to be cured of severe and potentially deadly food allergies can be cured without the use of any modern technology, products or medicine, proving the human immune system is indeed fully capable of immunity. I will require the test subject to avoid close to all sugars and carbohydrates, antiperspirants, deodorants, caffeine and all other chemical products. Test subjects will also be required to sleep no less than 10 hours a day and test subjects will be required to drink at least a half a gallon of clean pure water. The results will be established when the test subjects come in contact and consume the foods they were medically diagnosed as allergic to. If there is no OBVIOUS visible allergic reaction I win, if there is an obvious reaction JREF wins. Obvious reaction would be swelling, hives, redness and any other obvious sign of a reaction that is visible to witnesses. Scientifically speaking I will prove that the placebo effect can be virtually 100% effective in curing severe and potentially deadly food allergies.
Either CNN has issues with their program here or CNN is doing what they can to censor me. Makes sense there might be natural cures. But when they have not been proven by clinical trials regulated by the FDA then there is no REAL cure. If the bible is true you already have a cure for herpes. Unless you don't think God believes a cure for herpes is a "need". Notice in the scripture He says He has given us everything we need. I just found out I am diagnosed with herpes. I am 30 yrs old and can not believe I caught something I can not get rid of. I feel different every day knowing I will never find any one out there who will accept me for what I got. Its very imbarassing to even tell a man I got this. I am praying that God will bless physicans to come up with a cure because this kind of disease is taking peoples lives away that is diagnosed with it. Stephanie, let me help you rise above the fear and lies. You didn't "catch" herpes. There is very small chance that you might have recently been infected but that is extremely doubtful. Chances are you have had the pathogen responsible for the sores for many years. The test that detects what science fiction refers to as "herpes" only detects antibodies not any pathogens. There is no "herpes" test that detects actual pathogens.
Most likely your primary immune response just failed you. When your primary immune response is active your body will have no need for antibodies for defense. You could roll on "herpes", sleep with "herpes" and be infected with "herpes" three times a day with an active primary immune defense without ever getting a sore or an antibody. You can carry the pathogen for years without testing positive in a test or having a sore but once your primary immune response fails and you shift to your secondary immune response you will start creating antibodies and therefore test positive for many pathogens and the secondary immune response is far less effective at keeping such pathogens in check.
As for praying for physicians to come up with a cure, that is foolishness. Why would you ask God for something He already gave you? I suggest your pray for wisdom, knowledge and guidance for YOURSELF. God didn't put you here to fear so called herpes or any disease. I suggest you refer to the scripture posted JUST above your comment. The one that tells you that YOU have everything you NEED. If you think you need medicine to cure yourself or end the suffering you don't have the Truth, the Light or the facts.

My petition evens the playing field and eliminates the need for tough talk. I'm not so naive to think others are not scientifically aware that man has the ability to use their immune system for immunity. I would like to offer my theory on immunity. I believe much of it is instinctual and I believe man has lost touch with almost all natural instincts. Make no mistake, I can provide consistent cures, I just can't explain what goes on inside a human when they are restoring their immunity or using their immunity.
When you make such a monumental discovery, it is very hard to tolerate false accusations and attacks. This petition is such a threat to the medical industry and the media including CNN that it has been banned from many forums I have long been posting on. I have been allowed to post on many forums as long as people had a leg to attack my claims due to my lack of scientific corroboration. Now with the petition they have no way of attacking me so I am not being banned from those forums and the topic's locker or removed. Censorship is live and well.
It is time people unite by taking the secrecy out of the health and healing industry. The medical industry is as secret as they come and I for one do not believe matters of health should be so secret.
