When will we see a herpes cure?As a feature of CNNhealth.com, our team of expert doctors will answer readers' questions. Here's a question for Dr. Gupta. From Lloyd Bartley, Bowling Green, Kentucky “How close are scientists to developing a cure for herpes, figuratively speaking will we be seeing a break through in 10, 20, or even 30 years?” Answer: Well, Lloyd, there is good news and bad news on the herpes front. The good news: Researchers have made serious strides and now better understand the mechanism behind herpes outbreaks. The bad news: There is very little funding for that research. After receiving your question we reached out to a leading herpes expert, Bryan Cullen, the director at the Center for Virology at Duke University. Cullen is hopeful that a cure for herpes could come within 10 years, once funding hurdles are crossed. Nearly one in five people over age 12 in the U.S. is affected by herpes. It is caused by a virus - either the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both strains can cause genital herpes, but HSV-1 usually infects the mouth and produces cold sores. Despite funding challenges, Cullen and his team are inching closer to a cure. They conducted a study recently that identified the pathway herpes takes as it infects. They now know how herpes embeds itself into the cells and how it eludes treatment. Now that they have honed in on the physiology of the disease - and its triggers - researchers believe they are steps closer to creating drugs that could cure herpes. While we wait for a cure, there are drugs out there that can at least suppress herpes. Three antiviral drugs: acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir are commonly recommended to quell outbreaks. A physician might recommend taking these drugs when an outbreak occurs to quiet symptoms; or taking them continuously to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak. And of course the best way to avoid spreading herpes is to abstain from sex, but if you are sexually active, engage in safe-sex practices such as using condoms. I want to give up and forget about you all but I can't. I can't go bird hunting without thinking about how to get through to brainwashed consumers. I can't golf without trying to think of a way to snap people out of their mindless state. I can't even watch a movie without trying to think of a way to get people to put common sense before marketing.
I just got out of the shower and this is what was on my mind.
Every drug or alternative product must go through double and triple blind studies before they can be marketed as treatment for this or that. More so with drugs. The only way a drug can be patented and marketed is if it proves to be more effective than a PLACEBO pill.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT MEANS?
It means that a pill that gets patented is typically only slightly better than a sugar pill!
IF YOU PEOPLE WANT TO UNDERSTAND TRUE CURES, you are going to have to accept the fact that a sugar pill doesn't cure anyone but when a person takes a sugar pill for a reason they might just control and engage an immune response that is MORE EFFECTIVE THAN THE DRUG THE OTHER PEOPLE ARE USING.
This means YOU can actually control your immune system IF YOU GET LUCKY! If you become scientific as I have for the past 16 years YOU CAN LEARN HOW TO CONTROL THE IMMUNE RESPONSE ASSOCIATED WITH THE SUGAR PILL! When you learn how to control the PLACEBO behind a sugar pill or drug you CAN MAKE THE RESPONSE CONSISTENT!
HERE IS WHERE THE GOOD DOCTORS AND INTELLECTS FAIL. They can make it here with this comment but they do not understand that one person can engage a placebo response in another, BUT THIS IS WHY SCIENCE HAS THE TRIPLE BLIND STUDIES.
YOU SEE, A DOCTOR OF ANY TYPE OF MEDICINE, OR ANYONE WHO COMES UP WITH A CURE WITH THE USE OF A PRODUCT CAN BE VERY CONSISTENT IN THEIR LAVATORY AND CLINICAL STUDIES and then COMPLETELY FLOP ON A TRIPLE BLIND STUDY!

I learned long ago that alternative medicine is pure placebo and instead of crying about it I took the placebo products out of the picture and insisted on developing the science behind the placebo. True Cures. I still don't know why you have such a fascination with sugar pills and the placebo. You seem to have no understanding of the immune system or even the most basic functions of the human body. You seem to recognize that people can get severe allergies. You claim to have cured people of potentially deadly allergies. No I don't believe this. But. If something can be put into the body that can have such a detrimental effect, well wouldn't it just be possible that you could put a substance in the body that might have a very positive effect? Or are all of the deadly allergens completely harmeless and made deadly because of some kind of reverse Vulcan Mind Meld? I mean come on. You obviously have never taken or passed even a basic science course in your life. You have strictly become fodder for the masses on this board. And for the most part I consider you harmless because I can see through you. But. It appears others haven't been so lucky. Give this gig up and take the truck driving job. If you haven't made it in the True Cures gig in 16 years – well you ain't ever going to make it. And for good reason. It certainly appears you have cured no one. I haven't filed a tax return in 14 years. What I own could be loaded in a car if I owned one. All my time and energy has gone towards the science of cures but I wrote you a poem. And for the record martin, put your full name here and show us your herpes test that says you have herpes and show people how easy it is. Even if you had herpes and I know you don't, but if you did you wouldn't admit to ever having herpes either. People who talk about herpes and share their stories do so behind an anonymous handle and they leave it that way. Why???? Because of all the bogus ugly propaganda YOU create.

The major problem I have my friend is that in this day and age we rely on an injection or pill to cure us and yes you are right these doctors, scientists and companies do not want to talk to you because they will make no money from you

Remember the vast majority of good people on here would do anything for a cure....just like me.....think of it this way everyone has a great remedy for a coldsore for example put ice on it, use a certain cream , take lysine etc etc etc so we have all explored these avenues and spent lots of money.....we all know nothing really helps other than valtrex or acyclovier and that is a medicine my friend
The other problem is that every company out there scam people with herpes as they all have this miracle cure and I have done it myself where these people play on your feelings and make you believe that the scientists and doctors are not telling us the truth, you go spend money on a product/s and you have been scammed so your really in a tough market my friend.....agreed??

I lost you there Jay. Can you explain how a cure for herpes will be in pharmaceutical companies, Duke University or U of F's best interest? The donations cease to exist, the daily Valtrex consumption ceases to exist and the whole herpes industry comes to a stand still. You can tell a sheeple from a people by their blind faith in a wealthy but failing industry.
There are all kinds of sheeple, some with PhDs but all with absent minds.

Everybody on this page want a vaccine which will kill the cells / antibodies and any trace of the virus, so that we are normal and healthy again.

Why don't you find a media that cares about cures that put their advertisers, stock holders and owners out of business and I will go to them.
Here is my standing challenge. Give me 20 people deathly allergic to peanuts, shellfish or any food and I will have them cured in less than 14 days and feasting on the foods that would have killed them and I will do it without any products. I guess I could give them some sugar pills if it would make for a better story because you people can't possible fathom an immune response doing anything so I will dress it up with some sugar pills just for show. How's that.
It only tales 7 to 14 days to cure any allergy and medicine cannot claim a person eating shellfish without any reaction is not cured. A person with herpes will have antibodies for 4 months to a year after they are cured which make for a longer wait. When a person is cured of herpes the OBs are done but the antibodies will take time to disappear.
None of this matters. Your beloved science has seen to it that any claims of cures outside of medical science is to be dismissed without any consideration. There is no mainstream media able to do a report that would expose cures that cannot be patented. Now I am going to repost the information about sugar pills because the information drives a point home that cannot be disputed.
By the way, I have given up the fight. You see I don't have herpes, couldn't get it longer than a day or two if I tried. Now I am just having fun at your expense. Herpster, I've helped over 300 people cure herpes. It would have been over 500 people if I had known from the start that herpes isn't a virus.
I can count the number of people who have donated on my fingers. Please don't fall for the propaganda here and then ask me to help you. Please don't tell me you will support cures once you are cured. You won't. Because you won't want anyone to know you had herpes. It's quite simple why, really. Jay and John will be here to convince everyone that there is no cure for herpes and they will have Duke and U of F backing them up and as such when you tell the members here that you have been cured, they will simply dismiss you as being me or as being a liar. You will be banned from any other medical forum and no one will care. You can make a testimony for my website and I will be called a liar for posting it.
Herpster, I have been curing people free of charge for 16 years. When I travel, I come out in the negative because I don't get any cash and I don't collect anything for my time, for the gas it takes me to get to the Boise airport or for parking. I spend two or three days working my ass off with 20+ people all looking at me for a cure but have no intentions of ever helping me, and guess what helping me means helping you.
The only way you know a person is cured is when they disappear from the forums. The Herpes_Cure hubpage dried up after I saw 200+ people from it. Some of them have tested negative.
When you are cured, you will not take on John and Jay. You to will leave quietly and start your new life. If I saw everyone from the forum all that would be left in a month is John, Jay, Melody and all the others who do not have herpes but want you to pay them through donating to Duke and U of F.
Jay- Be careful with this one. I believe... I couldn't really figure out the all story because I was sort of new to the other hub, and because it's been going on for so long some that of the stuff had been deleted. But I believe he blackmailed one of the hubbers, her profile name is Kim he threatened to disclose her identity or something like that or maybe he even did. They were complaining about it a few months ago but it was something that had happened a while back when they went to meet him in NY and get his treatment whatever it is.

OR ... everyone with herpes could take 1500 mg of L-Lysine every day, and never again have another herpes outbreak. I have acyclovir prescriptions which cannot be bought over the counter you have to get them from a doctor for herpes so I can prove that to you easily I would happily sign the contract and go public…..why wouldn’t I

There are many people out there claiming that they can cure Herpes. I am going to tell you about one of these so called healers named David Flowers aka True Cures. Back in March 2009, 14 people met with David Flowers in New York. We were all suffering with the herpes virus.
Mr. Flowers told us that he could cure us in just two weeks. Some of us flew in from different states and one person even cam from Canada. He also put us on the no carb diet. He claimed that we all suffered from fungus and parasites and when the fungus and parasites were eliminated then we will be okay. We paid for his hotel, his meals and gave him money and most of us gave him money individually.
One month later some of us were still getting outbreaks and we complained to Mr. Flowers. He told us that was impossible and cursed us out. He complained that we were only saying that we had herpes to avoid giving him more money. Now, he had originally said to us that we don't need to pay him but that quickly changed as soon as we complained that we were not cured. A few of us tested and reported that we were still positive for the herpes virus but that angered him even more.
He then told us that the cure date was no longer 2 weeks but 2 years.
Today, December 28th, 2009, and everyone one of the 14 who saw True Cures back in March 2009 are still uncured. We have been humiliated and we feel deceived and scammed by True Cures.

I have never ever turned a person away from being cured. Techie Girl is from the original 14 people I saw in New York city who has tested negative several times without testing positive again. Positiveenergies aka BlackNgold is not speaking on her behalf or on behalf of anyone else from New York and Techie Girl is not going to cast her pearls before swine anymore. PE/BnG will say that MMS cured Techie Girl even though thousands and thousands of people have used MMS without even eliminating their OBs and NONE of them have tested negative other than Techie Girl who also saw me. I have 500+ clients, some who have tested negative but mostly they know they are cured because they do not have OBs anymore and do not care to test.
Techie Girl was rare. She had OBs and they were gone after seeing me but she still wanted to test. She had a history of researching the testing processes and had a special interest in testing negative. The only people who tend to test after being cured are the ones who where considered a-symptomatic. They had no OBs to go away so they had no way of knowing if they were cured so out of 500+ people I have only a dozen or less interested in testing. I went into the doctor last week, because i had a groth on my penis, i didnt think much of it because i have a desiese that gives me benign tumors that can appear all over my body. but i wanted to get it looked at and have an STD test because at 25 i have never had one. and like an idiot trusted the "im clean" as safe sex. but i can count the number of girls i have slept with on one hand and number of girls i have kissed madeout with on two. its tough to get girls to talk to you when you have a fake leg, cafe a lait (look like big birth marks) all ove the place. but so i got a call back from the doctor saying that my HIV test came back negative. then a week later i get another call saying that i have come into contact with cold sores, but only in the mouth. i was not told about anything i can take even after asking several times. and she never really said you have herpes. just i have come into contact with cold sores, but to be carefull and look at my genitals in the shower every day. so i get off the phone with her, stressed out all to hell, and instantly can feel a cold sore coming on. and since i shave my genital area, the day she told me i sarted getting itchy and slight burn on a few bumps. but i have looked at pictures and they dont look like any picture, so i think that razer burn? but i know the feelings that everyone is going through. i hade trouble with girls before this, now what the hell am i suposed to do? go live in total issolation? then i talked to my mom, and she told me that i have had a problem with cold sores since i was a little kid. so i dont feel right geting mad at my ex who i think gave them to me. i just dont know what to do, and to see that they are 10 years out at the earliest for a cure gives me some hope but 10 years is a long time. almost half my life. now i am living with 3 uncureable desieses. and one for sure i will pass onto my children if i ever find someone that wants to be with someone like me. i did however get a text from my best female friend saying that she would still make out with me. it still sucks. life has a way of keeping me down.

Even a young immature kid can put two and two together and they start trying to find out why their OB doesn't seem to go away after months. Then they find me and email me and describe their two month long OB and I tell them to go out and buy some tough actin' Tinactin and they are cured in three days.

He has seen this post and is accusing me of being the same person as a positiveenergies – who is one of his many dissatisfied customers/clients. No we are not one in the same. But I have been in contact with her. She is just one of many of his "uncured" clients that I have been in personal contact with.
This guy continually disparages Curezone. He has been thrown off of here many times for violations of the TOS. There is so much more to herpes than the sores. No one can argue that. I don't want to presume you agree with me, but you at least have to admit it is the stigma or propaganda behind herpes that is so damaging. The propaganda is what causes the depression not the sores.
Knowing that your sex life is shot causes depression not sores or rashes.
Sex is a way to pass pathogens, especially fungus, yeast and molds all thrive in the sexual regions. All of these pathogens flare up with alcohol, rich foods like chocolate and are exasperated by having sex after a hard week at work and a long night of partying leading to sex when a person is a fungal attack waiting to happen.
The fear and depression weaken the immune system making it more likely that the pathogen will cause signs and symptoms and be easily spread.

For the ones who suffer from any form of herpes, please donate to Duke University. The scientist have broken the code to cure herpes. It's only a matter of time and funding the will help cure those who suffer. There are a few other research universities making progress as well. One university is trying to develop a drug to completely inactivate herpes. There are also vaccines in trial as we speak. But, unfortunately only a small percentage of people do not have the virus. I was watching TV one night, and there was a professional MMA fighter who had the world in the palm of his hands, but was diagnosed with the herpes virus that affects the neck and chest area, and he had to leave the MMA sport for good. I think any dontation to these guys are great but I have been reading Dr Bloom at University of Florida he has is developing a ribozyme that blocks any herpes outbreaks where as Duke are developing a vaccine, now correct me if i am wrong but a vaccine would not be any good to people who already have herpes

Arguing with me is a complete waste of time. An argument has never cured anyone, a debate has never cured anyone, a donation to Duke has never cured anyone of herpes and none of these futile pastimes will cure anything.
However learning about the immune system and how you can control it like you control every other aspect of life is a person's only chance at not wasting their time. Thanks for clearing up the obvious.

I read that Duke is currently trying to find a cure and a I believe Florida University is developing a vaccine. What other universities are searching for a cure? This disease is an emotionally draining and painful for people who suffer. The social stigma is enough for people to commit suicide. It only takes one encounter with an individual who has the disease to have it yourself. Skin contact is all it takes. I've already donated to Duke University. I will begin to write letters to NIH, CDC, and Obama. I studied the field of nursing and always wanted to become a research doctor, but instead I took the role of studying business. But, at heart I have a desire to learn about STI's. Herpes in particular because more people are affected by it than people who are not affected by it. I'm sick of people thinking this disease should be disregarded and money be spent else where. This disease has been linked to other serious health conditions. Innocent babies are born with this disease. Not because the mother wanted to give her child a disease, but rather because so many people don't know they have it. I have faith in these dedicted scientist and they will be able to cure this disease. I'm anxious to see this in clinical trials. Do you have any available information on a possible time-frame this will be in clinical trial. Hopefuly within in the next couple years!

I donate thousands of dollars yearly to research projects and animal foundations. At such a young age, I'm only worried about serving God and living healthy. I'm not worried about the next iphone development or the most expensive name brand purses. Let's find a REAL CURE.

The key to understanding and curing herpes lies in understanding why YOU have nail fungus. Learn to look at herpes as a pathogen not a disease. Learn about the immune system and how it eliminates pathogens so you at least know it can. Then learn to use your immune system. Its only too bad that you can't patent your immune system or an immune response.

I know this communication may seem strange but I have been blogging on a CNN blog at (website removed for posting here to avoid moderation) and your name comes up quite often about your work in researching cures for herpes. Mostly they are asking people to donate to your research.
I have been arguing that Duke would not be interested in cures that could not be patented. Your assistant Christine thought that was an incorrect assumption which I hope is the case. My scientific research has lead to a cure for herpes, however there is nothing to sell or patent. It would please me greatly if you could prove my assumption incorrect and take a little time to respectfully investigate my claims.
My research has shown that a person with nail fungus (which you should already be aware is extremely common in people diagnosed with herpes) can also cure or at least eliminate herpes outbreaks with the prescription medicine Lamisil tablets used to cure nail fungus. I'm still waiting to hear of a case where Lamisil doesn't stop the OBs.
I personally do not use Lamisil to cure people of herpes, I use the immune system with complete consistency. In a nutshell I use the same immune response that powers the immune response behind every immune response seen in your blind studies. I can take a sugar pill and make it completely consistent at curing herpes because as you know the sugar pill has no healing qualities, it is the individual own system generating the relief in your blind studies. True Cures doesn't stimulate relief, it stimulates an immune response that eliminates the pathogens causing the OBs which makes it a cure instead of relief.
I have Bcc'd a few people from the Blog here who have contacted me so they are aware that I am no longer assuming Duke isn't interested in cures that can't be patented. I didn't do it to imply anything about you or your work but to imply that I am willing to do my part to ensure that Duke is aware of True Cures for herpes and to make you aware. I couldn't agree with the poster above more who said that DF is a massive waste of our collective time and energy. He is rather like a gnat, relatively insignificant but annoying as all heck. Tenacious little bugger too.
One word of caution for anyone visiting his "Healing Underground" site. Don't make the mistake that I did and give him your email address in order post a question. He will keep pestering you with bulk emails long after you have made it clear that you have no interest in his Mind Meld Mythology.

I understand why people think the pharmaceutical companies will not allow a cure for herpes to be made. Well, the pharmaceutical complanies will make billions of dollars for a long time after a cure is found. Why? Because the drug(s) used to kill the virus will cost a significant amount of money and insurances will not cover it for quite some time. Look a the HPV vaccine although not a cure. Where I live the vaccine cost $750 for a series of injections. I bet many insurance companies will not pay for the medication to cure herpes and only a small percentage of individuals do not have a herpes virus. So, the vaccine will only benefit a few as of now. It will serve it's justice for the younger generation when it's included in childhood immunizations. Think about chlamydia and other bacterial STI's. Have they been completely eradicated? Hell NO! Pharmaceutical companies are still making huge profit from those antibiotics used to treat chlamydia. Herpes will keep being spread after a cure. Now, when the vaccine takes full affect we will long be dead. Our grand children and great grandchildren will benefit the most from that vaccine. At that point, pharmaceutical companies will be making billions off of vaccines. I'm sure there will be a cure for herpes, but funding will slow the process. If we write and contact large organizations explaining the importance to kill this virus the cure will come sooner. Scientist already know how to kill the virus. It's the clinical trials that will determine if the cure is safe on humans. Last I checked, human trials are in the making. Hopefully in the next five years or so we will have a definite answer. I'm sure with the knowledge and technology these scientists will find the cure. If you want a change then find ways to help fund these research projects. Herpes is a serious disease. It causes depression and social isolation. There are many other medical problems this virus can cause. For the one's who say we should spend time and money else where, are the one's that don't understand what it's like to have herpes. Cold sores or genital herpes. They are both devastating. A coworker of mine said, "I would rather have cancer than genital herpes". I asked why and she responded, "There's hope for cancer, but none for herpes". Plus herpes is labeled as a disgrace to society. The social stigma is enough to make someone want to commit suicide. You tell someone you have herpes, especially genital herpes and see if you get another phone call from him/her. I'm talking about a possible boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. You say I have cancer and I bet he/she will be more than willing to carry on a relationship with you. It's the truth. My coworkes is right. Another issue to address. Herpes is so close to being cured, why should we give up now?

Are the scientist claiming this will cure herpes virus's or slow the viral replication as other drugs do now?
Bloom and Cullen have "cures" in the lab; however, they have to be replicated in animals and clinical trials.

I don't have genital herpes... yet. Basically, what are popularly going around in my country is hand foot mouth which is pretty lethal, then the nuisance of herpes simplex type 1 that team sports people and those who shake hands, go to wet markets usually get and those who got type 1 from being a baby who tastes everything with the fingers or are kissed or hugged by people shedding the virus.
I am surprised that there have been vaccine development updates recently and there are few interests talking about them here.
Glaxo's recent vaccine product has failed in its final trial. Sad. But I have heard of other more promising vaccine development routes... since like 2006.
When will a cure for herpes be available? If competitng drug companies are serious, with the modern scientific advances not available 10 years ago, I'd say in these 2 years we'd have the vaccine to CURE and not just to prevent. Molecular engineering is now far more mature than in the past. We have already broken down the vira DNA and even for HIV. We have the ability to know what DNA strains do what, and we have stem cells which won't age to replace any human cells.
Herpes simplex type 2 is not the biggest problem. It's very painful, less painful than type 1, but type 4,5,6,7... and 8 are more malicious and dangerous in general. HSV8 induce cancerous karposi sarcoma, HSV5 gives us gestric issue and nasal cancer. HSV5 and HSV4 totally suppresses our immune system to very low. And they can go dormant, or they won't...
My humble thought is this... Chicken Pox (HSV3) won't kill very often, it usually won't ever recur. But the research that would cure HSV1 using reprogrammed virus due to re-engineering can also mean it can be used in the cure of HSV type Nth. When we know how one goes latent, the molecules or DNA code that does so for every HSV type and we can disable one, we can disable ALL. It's like the same thing as a Math equation.
I read other vaccine development efforts and I am very optimistic that if we... each and everyone works together and seriously, if there are more companies like Glaxos actively trying to be ahead of the cure market, a cure should be coming for herpes types ALL in years to come.

Let this virus be killed. I do not know why people believe this virus is not dangerous to the human body. If it can cause cancer, then it's deadly. From corneal transplants to cancer = time for cure. I've been donating and will continue and spread the news that a cure is near, but funding is greatly needed. Giving people a second chance in life is amazing. A Phase 1 study commenced in February 2010.
The Phase 1 study is an open label ascending dose trial, assessing safety and immune response in healthy volunteers. The study is taking place in the UK at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London and will involve up to 42 already identified subjects.
ImmunoVEXHSV2 is based on a proprietary engineered form of the causative agent of genital herpes, HSV-2, from which genes that collectively interfere with the functions of immune system have been deleted. The proteins encoded by these genes aid wild type HSV-2 in evading the body’s immune system.
ImmunoVEXHSV2 expresses all but four of the approximately 80 HSV-2 proteins, maximizing the breadth of the anti-HSV immune response generated, but without the genes encoding for these immune-inhibiting proteins.
