When will we see a herpes cure?As a feature of CNNhealth.com, our team of expert doctors will answer readers' questions. Here's a question for Dr. Gupta. From Lloyd Bartley, Bowling Green, Kentucky “How close are scientists to developing a cure for herpes, figuratively speaking will we be seeing a break through in 10, 20, or even 30 years?” Answer: Well, Lloyd, there is good news and bad news on the herpes front. The good news: Researchers have made serious strides and now better understand the mechanism behind herpes outbreaks. The bad news: There is very little funding for that research. After receiving your question we reached out to a leading herpes expert, Bryan Cullen, the director at the Center for Virology at Duke University. Cullen is hopeful that a cure for herpes could come within 10 years, once funding hurdles are crossed. Nearly one in five people over age 12 in the U.S. is affected by herpes. It is caused by a virus - either the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both strains can cause genital herpes, but HSV-1 usually infects the mouth and produces cold sores. Despite funding challenges, Cullen and his team are inching closer to a cure. They conducted a study recently that identified the pathway herpes takes as it infects. They now know how herpes embeds itself into the cells and how it eludes treatment. Now that they have honed in on the physiology of the disease - and its triggers - researchers believe they are steps closer to creating drugs that could cure herpes. While we wait for a cure, there are drugs out there that can at least suppress herpes. Three antiviral drugs: acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir are commonly recommended to quell outbreaks. A physician might recommend taking these drugs when an outbreak occurs to quiet symptoms; or taking them continuously to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak. And of course the best way to avoid spreading herpes is to abstain from sex, but if you are sexually active, engage in safe-sex practices such as using condoms. I used to suffer from HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS for about 3 years. That was a very pretty picture you used to try to suck people into donating. If I had herpes and couldn't cure it I would have donated for sure.
Herpes may be a virus but unless you are a researcher and looking at the virus all day long you and I do not know that herpes is a virus. We have only been told herpes is a virus and you seem to take that at face value. Please don't insult me by telling me people look at them all the time, if that was the case doctors and lab techs would look at the herpes virus in order to diagnose it.
Michael/Sweet you yourself said 50% of the American population has the virus. That's a lot of herpes out there that isn't being detected at all in test. Half the population is said to have herpes but the doctors and lab techs can't detect the actual virus in any one. SO NO WE DO NOT KNOW THAT HERPES IS A VIRUS.
Who knows what herpescurefoundation.com is. If I do not prove to you people there is a cure for herpes, you will be donating to these kinds of carrot scams for the rest of your life. The only thing that will produce a medical cure is competition. If I can get validation for existing cures for herpes, medicine will have no choice but to market the dozens of drugs they already have that can and will cure herpes.
And Sweet/Michael when I say True Cures is almost 100% consistent, I say so because it is almost 100% consistent. The only reason you are not cured right now, that is if you even have what is said to be herpes is because you haven't seen me yet. There is no miracle cure, there is your immune system and there are drugs. Your immune system is healthy consistent way to cure ANY pathogen while drugs are risky.
As far as Christianity goes, if God does exist and Christianity is His chosen religion the cure for herpes has been here since the beginning of man because God claims he has given us everything we need and that we should be like the lilies and the birds and let tomorrow take care of itself meaning don't even lay up for tomorrow which is what you are asking people to do and some people are falling for it. People you are like the birds in the sky and the lilies in the field, you have everything you need except the knowledge to use it.
There is absolutely no way for a pathogen to hide from our immune system unless our immune system is failing or weakened. There is no products that will boost or repair an immune system so this leaves out all medicine alternative and western. The "hiding" pathogen trick is an excuse for medicine to give those donating to it a reason why they can't cure herpes. It is a lie, and if a tree produces bad fruit it is a bad tree, so says the bible, but who care that the bible says, it is common sense.
You all can thank True Cures for any cure medicine might produce because without True Cures medicine has no incentive to produce cures. The difference between any futuristic drug to cure herpes and True Cures is the fact that the drug will only kill the family of fungus/herpes virus and True Cures will kill all various pathogens.
True Cures restores immunity which means it eliminates all deadly pathogens firstly and lastly it eliminates superficial pathogens such as herpes, and it will do all this in less than two weeks.
The reason there will be no medical cure right away is because there is no way to control a drug or medical treatment to just eliminate herpes. Herpes sores are caused by thousands of different pathogens which is why herpes test are not designed to pick up the offending pathogens. To cure herpes with a medical treatment or drug will mean curing a hundred other diseases and medicine will not do that. I hope you understood that, there are many different pathogens that cause OBs said to be herpes and this is why the herpes test are not designed to detect actual pathogens because that would let the cat our of the bag. Instead they run test that detect an immune defense and an immune defense happens whenever any pathogen attacks you.
I seriously doubt that there will be a medical cure for herpes until you people start getting cured outside of medicine, and to be cured now you do not need to donate unless you want to after you are cured.

Herpes is one of, if not the most profitable disease known to medicine so it's time you let them reinvest their profits and for you people to not only stop donating, but stop using the products because there is no evidence that the products make a bit of difference. That's right, the greatest herpes medications only beat out the placebo sugar pills by a thin margin and that is because the results are doctored.

Researchers from UF’s College of Medicine received $50,000 in funding Sept 2010 to continue work that may lead to a drug used to prevent recurrent outbreaks of herpes in people who have the disease.
The award came from a somewhat unusual source: soft drink giant PepsiCo.
The UF research team, led by principal investigator David C. Bloom, Ph.D., a professor of molecular genetics and microbiology in the college, registered the research project with the Pepsi Refresh Project. The Pepsi Refresh Project is an online program that allows people to vote for their favorite goodwill ideas. Each month, Pepsi awards a total of $1.3 million to the organizers of the most popular projects.
The herpes research project received enough votes in June to land in the top 10 projects for the month and receive $50,000.
The research will focus on a ribozyme known to block infections of herpes simplex virus 1, which causes ocular herpes and cold sores. Bloom and his team will investigate whether the ribozyme can be used to stop patients who already have the disease from experiencing recurring outbreaks.
“I think the thing that makes this research so promising is that it is a new approach to herpes treatment and has the potential to be effective even in cases where a patient has a drug- resistant strain of the virus,” Bloom said.
Other members of the research team include Gregory Schultz, Ph.D., a Florida Research Foundation professor in the college; Alfred S. Lewin, Ph.D., Sonal Tuli, M.D., an associate professor of ophthalmology; and doctoral students Levi Watson and Dan Gibson.
Schultz said the ribozyme also can be adapted for treatment of herpes simplex virus 2, which causes genital herpes and some forms of ocular herpes.
He said many people carry the virus “latently in our neurons, but only a small percentage of people have problems dealing with the reactivation of those.”
Schultz said the team aims to “destroy the RNA that the virus needs to replicate.”
“Hopefully this is a way to add to or even replace current therapies that actually don’t effectively deal with the virus,” he said.
A PepsiCo representative expressed hope that the research would yield new treatments for those suffering from herpes.
The money from PepsiCo will allow the research team to test the use of the ribozyme in animals. If it proves to be effective, Schultz said the next step would be to find a pharmaceutical company to fund further testing needed before the treatment could be available to humans.
Jay, medicine will never intentionally cure herpes because they cannot patent the cure. That is why medicine has nothing to do with the cure for herpes, not alternative or western medicine. Now, see if you can behave and dispute my claims instead of attack my character.
And for the record there are meds that will already cure herpes and 8 out of 10 people here could get the medication if they new the truth about herpes.

She touched herself (genital area) and then touch my genital area.
It was like she was punishing me.
This was my FIRST woman on woman action, and i got the virus. I'm not even bisexual or lesbian, it was all curious harmless fun – which turned out to ruin my life forever.
To think that all the male partners i had prior to that night, were ALL virus free.
I will always live to regret that one night out with the girls.
Then i met a guy (whom i'm not married to) In December (a month later after the ordeal)
And after we had sex, thats when i had my first outbreak, and discovered that i had the virus.
He got the virus off me, so now the both of us are infected.
We got married in April, and have learned to deal with it, reluctantly.
He has now got it on his face, which is devastating. It's ruined our lives.
My husband works in the medical field, so is in hospital all week, imagine if he has a coldsore on his face at work?
He was formally a scientist and a pharmacist, and had done research on the virus, never would he ever imagine to contract the horrible virus – off me 🙁
I hate life, i can't understand why there is no cure.

It seems the only option at this juncture is to rely on pharmaceuticals that suppress to varying degrees of success, depending on how lucky/unlucky you are

The problem with oral medication is that with pills the medication goes into the stomach and digestive track where a huge percentage of the drug is destroyed by gastric juices. It is then passed into the bloodstream where it circulates through the liver where it is metabolized (broken down) until there's nothing left of the drug to do the job properly. Getting the picture?
It's no coincidence that millions upon millions of dollars are spent each year on herpes medication, all of which will NOT cure the condition. This suits the Pharmaceutical companies as they are receiving the majority of this money. Since it is the Pharmaceutical companies that fund the majority of pharmaceutical research a cure for herpes would bring about an end to a global CASH COW that is only getting fatter. The smaller, but still considerable portion of the profits from suppressive medications goes to the government. The government just so happens to be the second biggest contributor to herpes research. Not unlike the pharmaceutical companies, governments stand to lose this income if a cure to herpes ever becomes available. Those of you suffering proactively would most likely know there are sectors of the private and academic research sectors working on finding the elusive herpes cure on minimal funding. They can be seen asking for money to further the research; this invites the opportunist to take money under this pretence. So who do we turn to? Who will find us a cure?
The answer.
Governments must be compelled to pour money into herpes research. Government has the power to force pharmaceutical companies to pour money into this research by raising taxes and levies on the suppressive medications. Why would Governments do this when they stand to loose a steady income? This is where we come into the picture. The only thing governments like more than money is VOTES. We, the public decide which political party gets to spend our tax dollars. We, the sufferers of this terrible affliction have the power to force the government to put money into herpes research. In a recent study conducted on herpes percentage in the general population, 50 participants were recruited from the general population in the age range of 19 to 71 years. Out of these, 19 were males and 31 females. All the participants were asked to provide blood samples and swabs of their eyes and mouth for 30 consecutive days. Results showed that 49 participants shed herpes virus HSV 1or 2 DNA at least once during the 30 day period while 37 participants tested positive for herpes virus; while just one participant did not shed at all. 3 participants shed the herpes virus in their tears but not in their saliva.
Statistically, 20% of every population (depending on demographics) will be suffering from symptoms of HSV. This represents a lot of votes, votes get results. There are researches already trying to find a cure for aids, these days you can live up to 60 with aids, all you do is take the medication to prolong life.. I'm not sure how it works, but it's out there.
Herpes is painful, embarrassing and life changing, hence why I reinforce that we need a permanent cure, herpes can lead to aids apparently, or other forms of HIV, I could be wrong, just read that somewhere, if one has herpes, they are more susceptible to the aids disease.
I'm sorry to hear that you have it on your nose, try dyniclear.. It's the only think that works for me. Only need to apply it once and it gets rid of it within 24hours to 2 days. You need to apply it when the coldsore is at it's peak though, so when it's at it's worst. It stings like a bitch but it's worth it.

I saw in person 200 people from the hub page Herpes_Cure for curing herpes and ONLY three or four have complained of not being cured even though several where not cured but most where. You will only find Positiveenergies/blackNgold from the whole 200 plus people attacking me. Matter of fact, Melody, 10 to 1 you are blackNgold/Positiveenergies because you are saying the same things she has been saying. For the record, blackngold saw me under her handle Positiveenergies to see what I do and she pretended to have herpes the way melody is here and then she went straight to attacking me and banning me from her CureZone forum. That's right main attacker if melody isn't her here is a woman who banned me from her own forum the CureZone, a forum specifically for promoting and selling alternative products that True Cures exposes with every word. True Cures destroys the CureZone, a forum designed to promote gimmick alternative medicine.
Out of 200 plus people who say me, blackNgold/positiveenergies is the only one attacking me. 80 of the people from the hub are cured despite the fact that at the time I was just starting to learn the truth about herpes. That's right, when I saw them I didn't have any understanding of the OBs called herpes and still was able to cure 75% or more of the people I saw from the hub. SO YES, THEY GOT CURED.
Did they pay me. SOME DONATED but blackngold/positiveenergies did not and no one who donated has asked for their money back because even donations are refundable. SO YES AND NO some did happily donate but 80% did not, not because they were not cured but because it was solely up to them whether they donated or not. After they knew they were cured, why donate? Herpster- I am sorry to hear that, you both need to take some antivirals to prevent the virus from shedding and to stop replication. There's also lubricants like divine 9 that contains carrageen which has antiviral property. One of the hubbers was a holistic practitioner and was giving us a lot of useful informations. True Cures – a little googling of you clearly reveals that you are a scam-a-roni. Why are there all of these sites that expose you if you have cured hundreds of people of herpes? Just an update for those who followed David Flowers aka True Cures, who has been thrown off numerous websites and treated 300 herpes clients without a success story (I won't discuss here the countless others he has treated for other things without success). He is still arrogantly pushing his services on people – just that now they aren't falling for it. The 300 people he "treated" for Herpes all still have it. He hasn't cured a single person. I have been in personal contact with many of them. He was thrown off of this site multiple times for bad behaviour (yet kept returning under new and bogus handles), and nary a soul will ever go to bat for him on the internet. Folks with Herpes should save their cash and not waste it on this arrogant know-nothing. He claims he doesn't "charge" people (wink-wink). He only takes..... (sigh)...... "donations"... Which unfortunately can run into the hundreds (thousands??) of dollars... Plus the airfare to send him to your town..... Plus the hotel expenses...... Plus the money to feed him..... Plus the money to pay for him to play 18 holes on the links..... (yeah, he actually has su*kered people into paying his so called fees on the green..........)
So save your hard earned cash. He wasn't curing people of herpes last year. And he ain't doing it this year either ...... unfortunately. Stick to the natural methods. And hard work..... No one has ever cured themselves of any affliction or disease by spending oodles of money flying this guy around to stroke his ego on your dime......................................

True Cures – Are you for reals or is this just a bad Fraternity prank? You just replied to me "500 plus people saw me in 2009 for herpes. If I am a scam there would be at least a handful of people who have seen me claiming I am a scam. So get to work john and find them." Well True Cures. I just read a hell of a lot of stuff on google about you. And your website. And the healingunderground site. And wouldn't ya know. I can't find a single person anywhere who claims that you cured them of herpes. Why is it up to us here to spend hours trying to track these people down? Clearly they don't exist.

You are exactly right Jay; True Cures is how I fund my extravagant lifestyle. I fund my life with donations from cured people and $200 in food stamps each month. For those of you not aware of what it takes to qualify for food stamps I will tell you. It takes poverty. In 16 years I have had only one person donate to True Cures who hasn't seen me or been cured. You people have donated time and time again for the fabled unicorn medical cure that is always just around the corner. Actual cures cannot compete with the hype behind the carrot cure Jay wants you all to continue to invest in, just in case, the carrot in the face not a carrot diet.
Last night I spent 2 heated emotional hours discussing with friends and family whether or not I should continue living in poverty so I can continue promoting cures. It was an ugly discussion. I have been curing disease for almost16 years and have been perfecting them the whole time and it isn't something I want to give up but for two hours of heated debate, argument and emotional trauma from all parties I couldn't come up with ONE good reason to continue to cure people of herpes or any disease medicine cannot cure.
For the record, the cure for herpes is the same exact cure for any disease. The cure for herpes is restoring the immune system and a restored immune system will cure any disease in less than a month, usually in less than two weeks. For 16 years I scientifically developed a means to REGAIN control of our own immunity so we can utilize what we have had from the beginning of man but have turned our backs on in pursuit of patents.
The summery of the debate/argument was that there is no way medicine is going to get involved with cures that can't be patented and sold. I heard all the same arguments I have heard for the past 16 years. Funny how some people believe if I had money and was not on food stamps I could pay someone to investigate my claims. However because I AM THE ONLY ONE to have ever contacted a research group, university or medical center and I have contacted hundreds of them about True Cures, I am the only one who knows they are not interested under any circumstances. If a scientific group validated cures that couldn't be patented it would be the end of them as well. No amount of money can pay a research group to validate or investigate cures that cannot be patented when the validation will destroy them.
So yes Jay, I live off of my donations and $200 in food stamps. I kill my own wild game which helps. It cost me a little more than $50 to put 200 lbs of elk in my freezer last 13 days ago which I killed, packed out, cut up myself. I have a garden that produces fresh produce. I have two extremely fine sporting dogs that are highly appreciated by what few friends I have so occasionally I get to go bird hunting because my friends will pay the gas and other expenses just to hunt behind them. I had to give up golf, one of the few activities that took my mind off of butting heads with jerks all day from forums like the CureZone and CNN. That's OK, I can play full court basketball for free and ride my bike to the gym instead. A golf membership here is $700 and no other fees before anyone goes off on wooooo he plays golf.
I didn't read all the attacks you all posted here, I'm sure there is nothing new. What I have yet to see in 16 years is anyone dispute my claims.
One of my friends last night said he can get me a job driving an onion truck despite the fact that my resume says I have been scientifically developing cures for diseases medicine cannot cure for the past 16 years.
Jay and John or whoever you are, I'm sure you are the same person acting as if you are many, I am no longer enjoying the act of helping people cure diseases medicine can't cure. This is largely due to you creeps who believe cures are going to be chemicals and there is nothing an immune system can do. The poverty is taking its toll on me, my family and my friends. It's Sunday morning and I have a few new contacts who found me right here in the middle of all these attacks. They are asking to make appointments despite your trash talk here. I have been setting appointments and curing people under these exact same conditions for many years and I'm tired of it. It took being ganged up on for a two hour blow up for me to realize how tired I was and how futile it is to think I could make a difference when I am up against the most powerful industry in the world.
I DO NOT HAVE ONE GOOD REASON to help someone cure herpes or any disease. The only reason I ever had was my idealistic belief that it was the right thing to do. Jay/John and all you other people attacking me have beat that out of me.

I checked this Flowers guy out with an open mind really hoping that he had something special and different. This is what I found.
His premise is that the human immune system can cure anything if functioning properly. He advocates a low carb, no sugar, caffeine or booze diet plus plenty of sleep and water to drink and stress reduction. All of this sounds very reasonable. He advocates going without anti-perspirants to let the lymph nodes do their job. OK , I can go with that. Then he says that Herpes is really caused by a fungus not a virus. Well, there has been some research done into H having a"fungal host" so that claim didn't sound too far out there.
Where he lost me was when I pinned him to the wall in his "Healing Underground" forum and made him define the exact mechanism by which he claims to activate a person's immune defenses to pathogens. He does something he calls a "Quantum Entanglement". This has nothing to do with sub-atomic physics, it is really just another name for a Vulcan Mind Meld. While melded with a client, he claims to be able to diagnose the exact problem and "command" your body's immune system to wipe it out.
This is a guy who regularly dismisses most proven scientific knowledge as "science fiction" and he is doing Vulcan Mind Melds! Well, no thanks, Mr. Spock. Although the sci-fi has been entertaining, I'm going back to the real world now.
The sad thing is that I think he actually believes his own malarky. I don't think he's a con-man, just deluded.
Hey, even Spock knew when it was time to hang his ears up and get a new gig. If True Cures hasn't made it in 16 years, well there is a good reason for it. I guess most people don't put much stock in Vulcan Mind Melds for curing people. Maybe he should get a job in the entertainment industry.
You only scratched the surface Robin. I'm not going to waste much time. The diet you mentioned is a two week diet only. Less than two weeks for many who are still young and strong. True Cures is a science, as I have mentioned many times here and on all the articles and forums I post on.
Your science, the one you hold so dear and so infallible says there is no cure for herpes. You should have never contacted me if your science knows everything there is to know about an OB looking rash. I thought it was clear I contradicted them when I said herpes could be cured. Deluded? What did you think would be different in the science of cures verses the science of medicine that would have allowed your modern scientific intellect to accept a cure outside of medicine?
The simple fact remains, as far as ANYONE knows the only cure outside of Lamisil for herpes has been when the person with herpes has cured themselves. EVEN your doctor will have to admit that the immune system can cure herpes. That is a fact. In all the history of medical science, the immune system gets the only credit for curing herpes. Just because you have adapted to rely on a pill doesn't mean your immune system cannot be controlled.
Deluded? Why don't you send some more donations to Duke and University of Florida and tell yourself you are not deluded.
If you ask me, you and I both have some serious issues to work out before we ever meet in the middle.

I agree with you in that God is a Miracle Worker. God also wants us to help ourselves and do more than complain about our afflictions. He wants us to be loyal to Him and also use our mind. Part of us using our mind is making good decisions and following thru on them.
I believe Mr. Bloom at University of Florida and Mr. Cullen at Duke, among others, are working hard to find a cure. I believe God expects us to be smart enough to figure this out. These people, like the rest of us, have to eat and feed their families as well as pay for facilities, etc. As such, we need to DONATE TO THEIR RESEARCH AND STOP JUST COMPLAINING ABOUT IT!
