When will we see a herpes cure?As a feature of CNNhealth.com, our team of expert doctors will answer readers' questions. Here's a question for Dr. Gupta. From Lloyd Bartley, Bowling Green, Kentucky “How close are scientists to developing a cure for herpes, figuratively speaking will we be seeing a break through in 10, 20, or even 30 years?” Answer: Well, Lloyd, there is good news and bad news on the herpes front. The good news: Researchers have made serious strides and now better understand the mechanism behind herpes outbreaks. The bad news: There is very little funding for that research. After receiving your question we reached out to a leading herpes expert, Bryan Cullen, the director at the Center for Virology at Duke University. Cullen is hopeful that a cure for herpes could come within 10 years, once funding hurdles are crossed. Nearly one in five people over age 12 in the U.S. is affected by herpes. It is caused by a virus - either the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both strains can cause genital herpes, but HSV-1 usually infects the mouth and produces cold sores. Despite funding challenges, Cullen and his team are inching closer to a cure. They conducted a study recently that identified the pathway herpes takes as it infects. They now know how herpes embeds itself into the cells and how it eludes treatment. Now that they have honed in on the physiology of the disease - and its triggers - researchers believe they are steps closer to creating drugs that could cure herpes. While we wait for a cure, there are drugs out there that can at least suppress herpes. Three antiviral drugs: acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir are commonly recommended to quell outbreaks. A physician might recommend taking these drugs when an outbreak occurs to quiet symptoms; or taking them continuously to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak. And of course the best way to avoid spreading herpes is to abstain from sex, but if you are sexually active, engage in safe-sex practices such as using condoms. The first thing to do is to eat an appropriate diet. That fear of telling someone you love that you have herpes will never subside. While people will tell you that you should have told him prior to any type of relationship, you can't really do much about that now. Don't let people shame you into telling him. Granted, at some point in the near future you should absolutely tell him, but for now, make sure you are ready and take all precautions when having sex, which I'm sure you already know. As a result of this decision simmering in your mind, you've probably had more outbreaks than normal due to stress, yeah? Don't let this virus consume you. The best thing you can do for yourself and your partner is tell him. Perhaps, if this man loves you back, his reaction may be acceptance. However, if it is just the opposite, I encourage you to stay hopeful and not to let a negative reaction keep you from searching for the "one." Many people will accept you for you... I accepted my husband 7 years ago. Although I was initially shocked, I remembered that this virus does not define him and my love for him shouldn't be stifled because of herpes. Just stay strong and know that you are not defined by your herpes.
I agree with Karin. I have actually cured myself of HSV2 using viradux-AU. This entire virus, which includes cold sores, herpes zoster and other similar conditions will soon be eliminated. Some may think it a silly or shameful condition but it can be devastating , painful for some and even lethal in infants.
The idea that this is your fault and something to be ashamed of is a myth.

I too have been living with this virus and I have shared with my partners my situation because they deserve to have a choice of weather they want to chance being with me or not. I unfortunately did not have a choice in this matter leaving me vulnerable and now faced with this virus for the rest of my life or until a cure is discovered. Now because you told him you don't have an std thing's aren't going to be pretty when you finally do tell him. You must also be aware not taking medication to suppress this virus makes using even condoms or having oral sex dangerous for him performing it on you and especially you performing it on you if you both are into that. I caught this from my husband and he knew he had this for years before me and because he had never experienced an outbreak there was no way the women before me was right and he was wrong. I was pregnant with our 2nd child when I saw signs, but I thought it was a mere hair bump that kept reoccurring after I shaved. I went to my OBGYN and she did blood work on me and confirmed this was in fact Herpes. I was livid and I was ready to divorce him, but then thought who else is going to want me with this so I stayed for several years until I realized that every time we had any type of intercourse I flared up as if he was re-infecting me over and over again even with me taking the proper medication. He was not on anything because he was still in denial. Once I schooled him and took him to be tested he was even more trusting of me. I have been living with this virus for 11 years and on medication for 10 years. Thank God my 1st daughter didn't contract this virus because I had been experiencing these re-occurring bumps that my Dr. took precautionary measures to protect my baby during delivery. All in all I would suggest you get on med's right now and take them faithfully to protect him and you because eventually you both are going to want to have sex without a condom. With the med's at least you will be protecting him. My ex was the carrier that never experienced the symptoms which that may be your situation being that you have never had an outbreak whereas my body detects problems rather early on allowing me the chance to catch the problem in its early stages and prevent any further damage (THANK GOD) which that could be his situation. I've contracted HSV-2 despite using condoms. Most people are blissfully unaware that condoms lower the chance of contracting Herpes or HPV (human papillomavirus) by a mere 30%. Meaning that there is a 70% chance that your partner will get infected.
The virus can be present anywhere in your pubic area, or on your hands after touching your genitals. If you touch yourself and then your partner, you may pass on the virus. What you are giving information on is NOT a cure. It is a treatment of the symptoms from what I can see. Calling it a cure is misleading. Please be careful that you do not set people off on a false hope.
The virus remains dormant in your body between outbreaks. So unless what you are giving information on can actively enter the body, seek out the virus, and destroy it then it is NOT a cure.
I think everyone will welcome any information on treatments that help with the symptoms, but calling it a cure is not exactly correct.
actually, they are saying that they are trying to and will find a cure but until then you can try out the anitvirals that will slow down the process and slow down outbreaks and shedding (passing it on to other people).
but there already is a cure they just dont have enough money and crap to go through with it because there arnt any donation companies and stuff for it. so thats why it will take 10 years because of the amount of people in the world who have it.

I feel like the possibility of a herpes cure is unfortunately not plausible.. The cold hard fact is people get herpes and are uncomfortable and embarrassed by them, and the media dosnt help continuously making a joke out of it on tv and movies. They use hollywood to make us feel like second class citizens. With 1-5 people having them that number can only go up with no cure and pharmacies and companies can keep charging us for preventatives. If you cure it there is no more money to be made. That is why you will allways have a hard time getting funding. I guess you could say the same for cancer, think how much money they make on people dieing willing to pay anything for a preventative drug. If you cured cancer you would never make the same money, not only that but the population would swell uncontrollably within decades. Its tough to hear the truth like that but it is the sick logical world we live in. I only hope some billion air gets herpes and finds a cure or mabey some brilliant self funded do good scientist.
But when you think about it, you can't die from herpes and since so many people don't know that they have it..who really cares about getting medication to prevent the symptoms? They aren't really making that much money as they are with HIV and cancer well because those people can die and they know that people will do anything to stay alive...whereas having herpes is the same as any other curable STD..they will find a cure eventually or get the funds needed to prevent it because its not as serious as the other two, the fact of the matter is..after there is a cure for herpes more people will feel okay with having relations resulting in more people becoming infected with it.. So the people funding Herpes will actually make more money coming up with a cure than not.
The interesting thing is that herpes is a virus that the body can eradicate. We do not have to depend on the Big Pharma company to say we should take a drug or vaccine. It is estimated that the herpes treatment market is valued at 6 billion dollars. Truthful we have everything we need to kill the herpes virus naturally we just have to expand our mindset and learn about our bodies natural immune system. If someone wealthy contracts the virus i don't that will help with funding because they will probably seek out the education to naturally heal themselves. i feel every one that's writing here,but seriously they need to find a cure quickly. I have been living with this thing for so many years i care not to count, but as most people did not know i had it, not even what it was until i decided to check it out online. When i red it i almost fainted, that's how the experience was for me. I am also in love with this guy who wants to have a family but again i am afraid to tell him. I live alone and very afraid to even live my life, i cry almost every day,because it has even affected my child who has it because he one day felt safe to use my tooth brush when he could not find his on a trip. This is how serious this thing is. I am typing these lines and literally crying because i messed up his life as well. We need to find a cure and find it fast please ,this infection can kill and i mean physiologically, knowing you have it can do things to your mind.

It saddens me reading some of these comments regarding how ashamed and scared people are with dating. I was diagnosed with HSV-1 genitally it has been the hardest time of my life. I was very confused and did not understand this virus at all, I still am. I have talked to more than a few doctors and nurses. They all gave me different information on this virus and how contagious it is. Two out of the 3 doctors told me that they indeed have the same virus, but on their mouth. One explained that it could be passed on with out an out break, another told me that it can pass on only before, during, and two weeks after, the third told me they both could be right!?? (Really confused me).
I was told that I may never have another outbreak in my life, I do not need to take any medication and this virus is not life threatening in anyway. However, to me I feel it is. Every day I had to force myself to keep going. Every day had become a huge struggle for me to live. I am just very lost and confused.
Why are soo many people uneducated about this virus. And to my own stupidity, I was one of the uneducated people. You can get it orally and condoms do not help because it is passed only through skin to skin. I have yet to meet anyone who has been scared of my virus and it has some how not effected my dating or sex life yet, I am very fortunate, but in all honesty I still feel ruined.
It has been a year since my first outbreak and I have yet to have one again, but Id rather have an outbreak every month than have the thought of being contagious and hurting someone I love. I am no longer angry, but I am left with this emptiness. I feel broken. More than anything I wish I could be fixed.

I havent been diagnosed with herpes but from the things I have read online I'm pretty sure I have it. Problem is I havent been with anyone but my husband. He has had numerous affairs, but he has never showed signs of any disease. I recently had a clean bill of health but this past month i got blisters on my upper thighs that I thought were just from my pants. I was diagaonsed in 2009. Haad really bad outbreaks. I was on acylovir, and it helped, but the sores kept recurring every few months. They will never attempt to find a cure. Read my post above yours. They make so much money on treatments that they would lose if they had a cure. I read in Cuba they give the hydrogen peroxide intravenously and keep testing till they are sure its cured. The cost was pathetically cheap. Don't hold your breath for a cure.

I contracted HSV-2 nearly 6 months ago. About 3-4 weeks later I had one small, almost unnoticeable and barely painful sore. I have not had any sores since. I am a female and was lead to believe it would be a much bigger outbreak the first time but since that small spot I have not had any issues. I suffered from Herpes simplex so badly as a child that one time I was sent home with what the teacher said was " school sores". I obtained a medical certificate explaining it was herpes simplex and was able to re-attend. I think it was mistaken at school because I had them not only on my lips but sometimes on my face and one time on my back as well. If I got a cold, had my period or not enough sleep or even a bit of sun burn, it would trigger an outbreak. This virus caused me great distress ( I don't think I had a school photo that was herpes free) But after my last dose of herpes zoster ( chicken pox) I stopped getting them. It has been over 15 years and I have never suffered from cold sores since this time. I had chicken pox at the ages 3, 17 and 24. The last 2 times the blisters were exactly the same as my cold sores, clusters not singular blisters like my children got. Between the ages 17-24 my outbreaks dramatically subsided. I can recall having one up my nose during this time. But after my last infection I have never suffered again. I have medical records that substantiate the severity of the virus when I was a child. I would happily assist any medical professionals if they wanted to examine my blood etc.
I suppose if cow pox can inoculate against Smallpox then herpes Zoster ( chicken pox) could be a potential cure for Herpes Simplex (cold sores). I hope that's the direction scientist are heading in their search for a cure. I am living proof that people suffering from herpes can rid their bodies of this distressing virus.

I've discovered a lot about my HSV1 in the past few months. Instant triggers are L-Arginine (a lot of workout supplements have this in it, so be aware) and any form of ED medication such as Levitra. If you have herpes, beware of taking either of these things. They cause outbreaks in me within 24 hours of taking them.
As for treating my HSV1, the second I feel an outbreak, I take 2000mg of L-Lsyine and 2000mg of Valtrex (4 pills). I realized for years I was only taking 1 pill at a time, and this was a huge mistake. Taking a massive dose at the start along with Lysine has dramatically improved my situation, and in a few cases, stopped the sore from even reaching a visible stage.
I hope someday a cure can be found.
I don't know exactly when I got herpes, but I had my first outbreak a little over a year ago. I got really sick, like near death sick, practically overnight. I ended up missing about a month of school. I have to identify with everyone else. Even though HSV-1 isn't life threatening, it's killing me. I feel ugly, I feel worthless, and I feel like "who would even want to be with me now" I'm terrified to have kids when the time comes, because what if they end up having it to? What if they feel the the same way I do? I'm fortunate enough that my boyfriend is super accepting, and not judgmental. But I'm terrified if things dont work out with him, how could I even try to go back into the dating world knowing that I can infect others. I wish the cure was closer! I don't want to have to wait until I'm 30 to start a family, and even if I did, what if the cure wasn't discovered by then? What if I put my life on hold for a cure that is never coming? I have had luck, popping the blisters ASAP and applying acetone nail Polish remover on them, my cold sores usually clear up in less than four days. It's probably not healthy but at this point I'm so desperate, I don't even care.
I wonder if it would help if researchers were to conduct a study between patients who have herpes and have also had the shot for chicken pops in comparison to those who have herpes but never had the chicken pop shot. I also wonder if focusing on finding why the infection seems to only be active at the site of contact (rarely breakout in new areas) could help narrow the search for a cure that will isolate those cells or penetrate the layers of the skin so to be able to encapsluate and kill infected cells who'll not harming healthy cells. I think (and I'm no expert) that if we look to see how herpes is passed from cell to cell maybe we should focus on finding a cure that can capture the Virus actually when it reaches the surface since to me when the virus reaches the surface would this would open a pathway to the source of the infection anyway right?? Wouldn't it make it easier to work outside in than inside out since the virus seems to want to reach the surface

Okay my last post! Would the cure be lying with the comparison of cells for those people asymptomatic vs symptomatic? asymptomatic people are about 1/2 less contagious as those that are contagious than those symptomatic. And if this is true who holds more of the virus within their cells why? How? And are those cells still fully functioning after they become hosts for the virus?? Do the infected cells burst open the reason the virus reacts and escapes to the surface of the skin only to heal (sore) and once again return to the dormant layer ? I guess my biggest questions are how is the virus able to survive in the cells for so long even if it is encapsulated does the virus ever die during encapsulation and if the cell carrying the virus dies does the virus escape or does it wither as well. If there is a constant battle between the virus and cells how many cells can the virus take over at a time ?

I wish genital H was not such a stigma. What's really funny and sad at the same time is people willing to date other people with oral H but not willing to date people with genital H. Or people with oral H not willing to date people with Genital H. People saying that oral H is ok but not genital H... It's the same thing! They already have H! In fact someone with oral H can give genital H to someone through oral sex, which is the reason why there is an increased number of genital H1. 90% of my girlfriends get coldsores... Oral herpes... They have no problems dating and none of them feel the need have a talk before they date. Oral H can actually be more armful then genital H it's closer to the brain, but when you have genital H you are treated like as a person who had Leprosy back in the days when they couldn't treat it. That just tells you how ignorant and miss informed people are.
Please don't advise Herpes sufferers that it is ok to have sex if they use condoms. Condoms only lower the risk of contracting HSV-2 by 30%. I never had unprotected sex in my entire life, and I still got infected. There is no protection when it comes to Herpes (or the human papillomavirus, for that matter). It should be a criminal offense for a person who is diagnosed with an STD to have sex with somebody without informing them about their medical condition.
PS: This comment section is riddled with advertising for alleged Herpes "cures" and links to ominous sites that spread misinformation and try to trick gullible people out of their money. This should be criminal as well, because people who fall for this kind of fraud and falsely believe themselves to be cured go on and spread the disease. Please moderate the comments and mention somewhere that condoms offer very little protection against HSV-2, since the virus can be present in the entire pubic area, or on people's hands after touching their genitals.
