When will we see a herpes cure?

As a feature of CNNhealth.com, our team of expert doctors will answer readers' questions. Here's a question for Dr. Gupta.

From Lloyd Bartley, Bowling Green, Kentucky

“How close are scientists to developing a cure for herpes, figuratively speaking will we be seeing a break through in 10, 20, or even 30 years?”

Answer:

Well, Lloyd, there is good news and bad news on the herpes front. The good news: Researchers have made serious strides and now better understand the mechanism behind herpes outbreaks. The bad news: There is very little funding for that research.

After receiving your question we reached out to a leading herpes expert, Bryan Cullen, the director at the Center for Virology at Duke University. Cullen is hopeful that a cure for herpes could come within 10 years, once funding hurdles are crossed.

Nearly one in five people over age 12 in the U.S. is affected by herpes. It is caused by a virus - either the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both strains can cause genital herpes, but HSV-1 usually infects the mouth and produces cold sores.

Despite funding challenges, Cullen and his team are inching closer to a cure. They conducted a study recently that identified the pathway herpes takes as it infects. They now know how herpes embeds itself into the cells and how it eludes treatment. Now that they have honed in on the physiology of the disease - and its triggers - researchers believe they are steps closer to creating drugs that could cure herpes.

While we wait for a cure, there are drugs out there that can at least suppress herpes. Three antiviral drugs: acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir are commonly recommended to quell outbreaks. A physician might recommend taking these drugs when an outbreak occurs to quiet symptoms; or taking them continuously to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak.

And of course the best way to avoid spreading herpes is to abstain from sex, but if you are sexually active, engage in safe-sex practices such as using condoms.

It makes me sad to see another young person with this and i can completely relate since I also was young when the first person I was ever with gave it to me. I too felt like I would never find someone and that I was not going to be desireable anymore. But you will be surprised at how many guys are excepting of it. So far not once have I been turned down from it. Let the relationship happen and let him get to know who you are and if there is even a connection between the two of you and then have a talk. I have been in 3 relationships long term and currently in over a 2 year relationship right now. I have friends that also have it who thankfully were brave enough to tell me and it makes you not feel so alone. Keep your head up and know you are definitely not alone out here. Best of luck to you.

hi. Ive been struggling with this virus 6 years now and i know exactly what your going through. im 31 and i havent been in a relationship since i contracted this virus. i havent told anyone and i pray for the day we can have a cure. the virus doesnt hurt me. honestly i see it kind of like acne. you eat the wrong foods and you get a pimple and if you eat the wrong foods you might get a herpes outbreak. but the stigma is unbearable. i know i will be happy someday and seeing your story so young makes me realize as a 31 year old man i need to be stronger and have faith. ending the stigma starts with us but its hard

I'm an 18 year old and I was just diagnosed with this yesterday. i've been freaking out. Trying to find someone to blame but in the end I'm the only one to blame. I should of just stayed away from sex. especially unprotected sex. The last 5 days were the most painful period of my life. I pray to God that the cure comes ASAP. I don't know who to talk to. I told my partner. He's angry cause I prob gave it to him. I told my previous partner he said he thought he was clean and is going to go get checked today. I'm so angry at myself :/
Sorry for the rant. but I really do hope this cure comes soon.

hi. please don't be so disheartened. there are worse things out there and people are dealing with them with a lot of courage. you will find your partner, one who will understand your situation and love you unconditionally. i do not generally write comments on random blogs but i know how you feel. you will get over it trust me. just take the medicines and preventive measures regularly and it will become a routine. after a while the symptoms will go and your life should be close to what it was before you got the virus. use natural plant extracts like aloe vera. it might help. please be strong. the world is a beautiful place. enjoy it!!!!

I 2nd that Lost, It isn't manageable as Doctors & others would like to make us think. Valtrex & other meds don't even help half of the people out there that have it. A cure is needed, who & where can we donate to help with the research for a cure? Another thing, I think that we should write the various talk shows like "The Doctors" & other programs like this to help bring attention & awareness to the HSV 1 &2. I think that would be the 1st step in to helping to cure this virus. God Help us!!

My partner and I tested each other before we had a sexual act. I have only been with him. Last year, we traveled to the Dominican Republic for a vacation, when we arrived I immediately went into the pool, next day my genital area was itching. I did not pay attention I tought it was normal. When we got back to NY my gynecologist told me I got herpes. My boyfriend doesn't have it, therefore, I don't understand how I got it. Can someone explain me please?

If all you said is true, your boyfriend likely gave it to you. He might not have had a breakout when you went to the doctor, so the swab never picked up the virus. You don't get Herpes from a pool, or a towel, or a toilet seat.

These comments are so sad! It's not the end of the world or relationships! I dated three guys after I found out I had it (I always told them on the first date) and it was amazing how much they didn't care. The last guy was even a virgin and saving himself for marriage, he never judged me and we've been married for six years now! Herpes has been around for thousands of years and there used to be no social stigma whatsoever. It was just a skin condition (all it still is, really). The social stigma was created from marketing for the suppression drugs in the 1970's. Look it up =D If 20% of the population has it, then it's unreasonable to view us as somehow "unclean" or lesser than everyone else. Don't be ashamed! *hugs anyone that needs it*

As time passes it gets harder and harder to tell right! It shouldn't be that hard to tell, but tell before she wakes up one day to it and is upset! It doesn't have to be a scary sit down. Maybe you two are watching tv and you can say Oh I think that person had a cold sore. Do you get those? I have before. and start the conversation that way. Most people don't realize cold sores and herpes are the same thing. You can make the connection and at that point let her know you could give it to her and you hope you don't but there is a chance! Do it! Don't chicken out. You will feel so much better and like a weight has been lifted from your shoulders.

Tell her asap. If she stays with you then she really does love you and you can stop feeling guilty for not telling her. And if she doesn't stay, well then she wasn't the one for you. Its better to know now rather than later when you develop even deeper feelings & it gets harder to let her go if she doesn't stay.

I've had to live with hsv-2 for about one year now, all because of one stupid drunk night and a one night stand that didn't care to let me know he had it. During that time, it had been about a year of cultivating a friendship with someone I met on the internet. He was always after me during that year so we went on a few dates and he was so right for me, and then that soon regrettable night happened. I went to the doctor about a week later because I was in so much pain and I didn't know what was going on, when she told me what she thought it was I broke down then and there. I cried the whole way home and waited for my results in hopes that she'd be wrong, but she wasn't. Later on that night I knew I had to tell the guy that I had begun to fall for and he was heartbroken. A few days later he called me and said he had thought about it and didn't care because he truly wanted to be with me and was willing to accept me in whatever way. It's one year later and we are still together and I'm pretty sure we are meant to live out the rest of our lives together and he feels the same. When you find someone that makes you stronger don't ever let them go, ever since he came into my life I don't have as many outbreaks. There are people out there that are willing to accept us, we just have to be patient and positive.
Although a cure would be amazing, I'm content with my life because I know I will be ok even without the cure.

  27. Dealing With It

I am a 48 year old male who was diagnosed with HSV1 & 2 this past March.. Against my better judgement I had a one night stand (unprotected sex) a few months earlier and regretted it that night and even more when I found out I had it. She was nice enough to call me in March to let me know that she has it. I had no symptoms/outbreaks and at first didn't believe her but I got tested and needless to say I wasn't too happy when the results came back. Thank G-d all the other STD tests including HIV came back negaitve.. I now get very small genital outbreak (1 very small sore) that lasts about 4-5 days at the most and doesn't hurt or bother me physically at all... i have never experienced any oral herpes outbreaks. I don't take any prescribed meds but I do take Lysine on an almost daily basis. The stigma is far worse than the actual condition. I haven't really been involved with anyone since finding out so I have not had to tell anyone that I have it. Sometimes I do start to think about it and wonder if I will ever meet someone who will accept me and my mind starts to play headgames with me. This usually last about 1 day. It really sucks having it but there are far worse things to have, such as cancer, diabetes, etc... It's not easy but I truly hope for a cure soon.

Hello everyone. I have had gh for over 13 years. I contracted it when i was 19 and was crushed when i was diagnosed. I also found out i was pregnant a month after i got it. I was so afraid for my baby and pleaded for a c s e c t i o n. The doctor said i want broken out and proceeded with natural birth. My baby came out healthy, t h a n k g d.
it is not the end of the world. It is a nuisance, but most people are understanding, especially if you are open and honest. Just be sure to be responsible about it.
I have had 3 serious relationships since.
It would be amazing if there was a cure! Or at the least, a vaccine do it could not spread.
Keep your heads up! Life can still be good even with gh.

Even if they found a cure they wouldn't put it out because pharmaceutical companies make money by having ill people keep buying medicine. If their was a cure given then everyone would be cured and no one would need to buy medication.

And i regret telling this one guy that i liked, before allowing him to actually fall for me..we could have been perfect..but he still has the guts to talk to me..he just doesnt want to risk it you know. i pray for a cure to come out fast..because i want that future family before well i hit that age..and this just pretty much ruined it for me. ive got some hopes..but i wish the cure came..cause nothing changes a guys mind faster than an std

I'm 60 and was infected with genital herpes at the age of 21 by the third guy I ever had sex with. No one at that time was really aware of the disease, so when I saw a doctor for a sore all he told me was I had 'a cold sore in a different place'. Only decades later did I realize what I had. In the meantime I accidentally spread the virus to my eye and now have a slight but permanent drooping eyelid. My outbreaks have gotten worse with time and now I get them about once a month usually with multiple sores. I haven't let any of this ruin my life – while most of my love life was before I knew the nature of my infection, I dated afterwards too, and am not aware of having infected anyone. (Thank goodness.) The sores are a pain in the butt (literally :D) but recently I discovered lysine cream which is very effective for me. The eyelid gets me down sometimes but it's only really noticeable when I'm tired or sick, and my eyesight is not impaired. But what gets me mad is I know the reason there's not much funding is that selling expensive treatments is much more profitable for the drug companies than selling a cure would be. There are people suffering both physically and mentally because of this virus but money talks louder than humanity. That goes for all the people posting teasers about fake 'cures' here so they can con desperate people, too.

Im 29 and just found out I have herp type 2. The woman Im currently with gave it to me. Ive figured I had it for awhile now. She was so scared when she told me. A part of me told me to break it off but I thought about how she has been rejected so much for something she has no control over. I told her I love her and that it doesnt matter to me. Since that time our bond has grown stronger and it has helped me focus on giving this relationship 100% of me. to all of you out there still looking for that someone who will accept you for who you are, not based on a bad roll of the die. My advice is never give up hope. Sooner or later youl find that person for you. I hope you all the best.

Hey...So sorry to hear about your situation. Dat totally suxx...I had the same thing happen to me, without getting into too much detail about that, well basically I trieed a whoole lot of different things, home remedies, ointments, tinctures, but the sores just kept comin back.. I have been using Hyperisince tablets, and these were suuuper effecctive...apparently contains some natural herbs from India or sumthin thats like an ancient cure that boosts immunity and destroys the virus. I've been on em for like 3 months now, and my outbreaks are almost 90% gone. Hope it helps :))

I read all your comments and it is nice to not be alone – I was with a man who was 14 yrs my senior and he never told me he had the virus. It can lay dormant and then one day I had all the symptoms. I have now lived with it for 10 years. It isn't the end of the world, but it definitely makes your dating life more difficult. I was angry and upset at first because this person never gave me the chance to decide if I wanted to be intimate with someone who had the disease. He is a liar and a thing of my past. I have now met a great man and have been married for over 4 years. There are people out there that will love you for who you are. I would love a cure, but to all those who suffer from this disease don't let it depress you – the outbreaks I found come less and less now with a proper diet and exercise. Good luck everyone I can totally related just don't let herpes stop you from living your life and don't let it define you.

Here's a link to a fab herpes dating and support site: http://www.h-ype.com
It's run by people with herpes. It's mostly people from the UK on there, but it's open to all nationalities.
Also, the only place I trust to provide real information on herpes is the UK based HVA. Their site just gives you the truth and the facts. http://www.hva.org.uk
Don't scare yourself silly by reading the rubbish on a lot of medical sites out there. Yes herpes can be a pain, but it's not the end of the world and it's not the end of your love and sex life. Trust me. Get on with life, don't let herpes ruin it.

Idk how to cope with this I feel as if most days all i want to do is run away from this and act like its not there but deep down i know it always will be. Being so young with gh, I feel as if in somehow my life is ruined. who will love me? and so much i will miss out on...natural child birth, conceiving naturally, being able to breast feed. some of the most amazing motherhood things i will never get to try. And all i can think is why couldn't I ave listened to my mom, why did i have to sneak out to hang out with my friends and party, why couldn't i have changed my life around sooner...but instead on feb. 12th 2012 I had to be a victom of rape at only age 15...and all i can think is this is all my fault and what if i wasnt the only girl...I'm looking for help and answers but idk how to find it...someone please help me

Don't let this do a mind job on you. I've been dealing with this for 20 years and in that time have married and have had 3 children, one natural and 2 c-sections (for other reasons) and breast fed all three successfully. No issues. This is not the end of the world. Don't worry . Plus symtoms lessen over time.

    Hi Help,
I am really sorry to hear about the horrible way you got herpes. I know the following isn't going to take the pain of that away, but I hope it helps:
It's entirely normal to feel like you do just after you've been diagnosed. I don't know anybody who hasn't felt that way on finding. I know it's hard to believe right now, but your life is not ruined. You will find love. You will have an active sex life. You can conceive normally. You can have a normal child birth.
Take a look at http://www.hva.org.uk This is the only site I trust.
Be careful what you read on other sites. They often have inaccurate and quote only extreme cases.
The truth is, for most people the symptoms of herpes get less over time. It will not stop you having a normal love life and you will find someone. From what I remember, the only time doctors are concerned as far as giving birth goes is if you have an outbreak at the time you are about to give birth. In this case they may suggest a caesarean. But before you even get to that stage they may suggest a course of antiviral drugs to prevent or reduce the chance of an outbreak during the time you give birth.
As for your future sex life, if you don't have sex whilst you know you have an outbreak then you greatly reduce the chance of passing it on. It's even less of a risk if you use a condom. I can't remember the figures, but it's pretty a low risk.
You will find someone that loves you for who you are. I've not had problems finding love in all the years I've had herpes. So trust me, you will be ok. All I can suggest is be honest with people, this may mean waiting until you are sure you know you can trust them. I know that's not easy, but I only say this as even though the chance of passing it on if you use a condom is pretty low, there is still a small risk. From my personal point of view I feel it's always better to let the other person decide for themselves if they want to take the risk.
It's pretty well known that stress can trigger herpes outbreaks, so as hard as it may seem right now try not to worry. Be good to yourself. Get on with life. Don't let herpes stop you from enjoying it all you can.
You will be ok. Trust me.

Has anyone ever tried using fungicide tablets to cure this disgusting disease we all have? I've only heard speculation that this would work, but I haven't found any proof anywhere. I know that using fungicide creams on outbreaks usually cure them within 2-3 days. MMS will clear the symptoms for a while and even get you to test negative on a Igg test, but I havent found any proof that it actually kills the virus for good.

Im currently in a relationship with a woman that has herpes... i dont have it but im very worried that i might get it... I really like this girl but i dont want to be scared off cuz of this problem that she has.... but it kinda worries me that if i do get it and we dont work out that i will be stuck with what she has given me if i do get it.... But there is good guys out there that are willing to take the risk even though its something they shouldnt do

@Daniel There is ok course always a risk. But let's put the risk into perspective. If you don't have sex whilst she has an outbreak then the risk is around 4% (if woman is infected and man is not). If you use condoms it's even lower risk, and if you then take suppressive medication it is even less again.

It becomes almost comparable to the risk of getting pregnant whilst on contraceptive pills! And we all seem happy to take that risk!
