When will we see a herpes cure?As a feature of CNNhealth.com, our team of expert doctors will answer readers' questions. Here's a question for Dr. Gupta. From Lloyd Bartley, Bowling Green, Kentucky “How close are scientists to developing a cure for herpes, figuratively speaking will we be seeing a break through in 10, 20, or even 30 years?” Answer: Well, Lloyd, there is good news and bad news on the herpes front. The good news: Researchers have made serious strides and now better understand the mechanism behind herpes outbreaks. The bad news: There is very little funding for that research. After receiving your question we reached out to a leading herpes expert, Bryan Cullen, the director at the Center for Virology at Duke University. Cullen is hopeful that a cure for herpes could come within 10 years, once funding hurdles are crossed. Nearly one in five people over age 12 in the U.S. is affected by herpes. It is caused by a virus - either the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both strains can cause genital herpes, but HSV-1 usually infects the mouth and produces cold sores. Despite funding challenges, Cullen and his team are inching closer to a cure. They conducted a study recently that identified the pathway herpes takes as it infects. They now know how herpes embeds itself into the cells and how it eludes treatment. Now that they have honed in on the physiology of the disease - and its triggers - researchers believe they are steps closer to creating drugs that could cure herpes. While we wait for a cure, there are drugs out there that can at least suppress herpes. Three antiviral drugs: acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir are commonly recommended to quell outbreaks. A physician might recommend taking these drugs when an outbreak occurs to quiet symptoms; or taking them continuously to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak. And of course the best way to avoid spreading herpes is to abstain from sex, but if you are sexually active, engage in safe-sex practices such as using condoms. However, once you settle down and learn the facts, you'll realize that having herpes is not the end of the world, and it's not the end of your social life.

I would love to see a cure some day, and I am holding my breath, but I don't think that the medical industry will allow it to happen. They benefit from selling medications that help prevent or decrease outbreaks. The profit from these medications is most likely higher than what the profit from a cure would be. I hope I am wrong.

My now ex boyfriends negligence in safe sex and negligence in being faithful has caused me to be scorned with this disease of what feels like a curse. My job is unsatisfied with my work lately because some days when I have an outbreak its too severe to the point Im in too much pain to work. I also have it and was given it in my last relationship of three years. When I broke out with it a year into the relationship we had him tested too and he tested positive so we didn't worry about our sex life except the inconvenience of the outbreaks I had. Now he has broken up with me and I know I will not feel comfortable being with someone who is not also infected. Hi, all. I too live with the virus and was once emotionally down like some of you. I was infected by a women who was either unaware she had it or did not care that she was having an outbreak. I was wearing a condom and still was infected.
After a lot of reading and talking to some I just learned that life goes on and the pesty virus is not the end of the world. All we have is a skin condition in which me must avoid contact with others during outbreaks. Once I did that my outbreaks reduced significantly. Hello I am a mother of three beautiful sons, I alway been health conscious, alway getting all kind of tests including Hiv tests. I one day went to my GYN and ask for the herpes test. He ask me why do I want that test because that test is not required but I just wanted to know. When I found out that I had both and he explain to me that u do not know who you caught from, that u could of had the disease for over 20 years I was in shock. When I first found out I had it I told my husband that I been married for over 24 years. I feel so bad that I told him, it is like he didnot want to hear it. So I said you have to get tested too hun. He then agreed to get tested, So he has Hepres 1 I have Herpes 1 and 2. I was trying to tell him that really there is no difference. The only difference is that the public calls herpes 1 the good herpes, and herpes 2 the bad one. If you do the research there is no difference, My life has been a living hell since the rejection from my husband I feel like he hates me. I would like to know where I can get support.

Im 27 years old and due to a sorted adolescence, have been a severe sex addict. Just found out Herpes is a parasite. The health food store has stuff and herbs to kill parasites.
I have only had herpes 2 for about 8 months.Do some more research on herpes guys there is a cure if you actually take the time out to really look find were most diseases come from in your body? find out how you can feel better through foods like carrots raw vegs. and things from the health foods store cleanses if its healthy for you and other items it all a process but its well with it to feel normal again and to be happier in life.
Living with this monster, because that is what i consider this to be: a monster, has been the most difficult thing i have ever encountered in my short 20 years of life. I made a choice that I will regret for the rest of my life. I'm not sure how someone can get over this, or "learn to live with it." I can't shake this feeling of despair. 1 in every 5 is infected with this disease, it's a shame there is no cure. The emotional consequences of living with this are far worse than the physical.
I am a 30 year old guy that was infected by my ex-girlfriend and I have been "lucky" that in the past 6 years I have only had 3 breakouts where there has been any real pain or discomfort. The unfortunate part of this is that we were at the point where things were off and on several times and shortly after our last encounter I met a great girl. I unknowingly passed this on to her. I feel horrible about this because her outbreaks are more frequent and severe than mine. It is a horrible feeling to carry to know that this person who is so sweet and caring has been devastated by this.
