When will we see a herpes cure?

As a feature of CNNhealth.com, our team of expert doctors will answer readers' questions. Here's a question for Dr. Gupta.

From Lloyd Bartley, Bowling Green, Kentucky

“How close are scientists to developing a cure for herpes, figuratively speaking will we be seeing a break through in 10, 20, or even 30 years?”

Answer:

Well, Lloyd, there is good news and bad news on the herpes front. The good news: Researchers have made serious strides and now better understand the mechanism behind herpes outbreaks. The bad news: There is very little funding for that research.

After receiving your question we reached out to a leading herpes expert, Bryan Cullen, the director at the Center for Virology at Duke University. Cullen is hopeful that a cure for herpes could come within 10 years, once funding hurdles are crossed.

Nearly one in five people over age 12 in the U.S. is affected by herpes. It is caused by a virus - either the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both strains can cause genital herpes, but HSV-1 usually infects the mouth and produces cold sores.

Despite funding challenges, Cullen and his team are inching closer to a cure. They conducted a study recently that identified the pathway herpes takes as it infects. They now know how herpes embeds itself into the cells and how it eludes treatment. Now that they have honed in on the physiology of the disease - and its triggers - researchers believe they are steps closer to creating drugs that could cure herpes.

While we wait for a cure, there are drugs out there that can at least suppress herpes. Three antiviral drugs: acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir are commonly recommended to quell outbreaks. A physician might recommend taking these drugs when an outbreak occurs to quiet symptoms; or taking them continuously to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak.

And of course the best way to avoid spreading herpes is to abstain from sex, but if you are sexually active, engage in safe-sex practices such as using condoms.

Do bear in mind that the guy that ruined your life is a victim too. He didn't start the thing. He could be irresponsible about it, that's for sure, but someone ruined his life at some point too. And you may have ruined a few yourself. Not that lives are ruined anyway. Not blaming the person who infected you and accepting that they are a victim goes a long way into lifting your spiritual light.

I've had it about 10 years I think. It's seemed to worsen over time even though I take far better care of myself than I ever have before. I too am "pretty hot", resulting in only long term relationships than I've stayed in longer than I should have because I don't care for the introductory process when I have this thing. But I only get this one and only life (to my knowledge), so I'm not going throw out a relationship if it knocks on my door.

In the early 60's my roomate contracted herpes. there was no treatment and she was in agony.... once diagnosed she was devistated! We (3 of us) "shopped closests!" (shared clothes... even pantyhose...) she was suicidal! they told her she could not give birth to healthy babies.... we didn't know if we could catch it from her from the toilet! My other roomate and I never contracted it. She has since become almost outbreak free (happens over time) Married and had two children and her husband is not infected! So hang in there! If you get close enogh to someone that intamacy is the next step, tell them. If they are at the same place? they will help make it ok for both of you!

The first month is always the worst...I had herpes two years now...and I remember the night my doctor told me over the phone I almost died. That night i drank so much hoping it was a bad nightmare. Of course in the morning it wasn',t but dating for me is scary..I have had maybe two relationships since i found out but they weren't long and I recently went on two dates with a guy. my thought is the person you are dating should love you for you and not what's inside you. Herpes doesn't make a person who they are. Rejection sucks but how many people are out there....10 billion there's gotta be one person out of them to except you.

Hi all, I have had this disease since 2005. I am writing this mainly to say that you will find someone, but you can't let this disease run your life. I have been in a relationship for three full years. My baby knows about my status, but is still by my side. We live a fun filled life and we never have to worry about this disease getting in our way. Finally, we will be getting married next year! So, don't tell me that you will be alone forever.

Hi everyone, I have had this disease since last year and even being a 38 year old women with 2 kids is a scary thing. I was having problems with my husband and started dating someone else not too long after we had broken up. Not too long after dating this new guy I had some symptoms and did go to the doctor but they kept telling me it was not herpes and was always something else. So I couldn't confront my new guy until I had some results. I was so confused and upset and didn't know what was going on until I finally got some results after visiting the doctor a couple of times, by then I had gone back to my husband and I did tell him there could possibly be something wrong with me and told him we should wait. Obviously he did not want to wait and we got intimate. Unfortunaetly he did end up getting sick even though he really doesn't get any symptoms I feel terrible that I did this to him. We already had enough problems way before this ever happened and unfortunately we are not together anylonger. I hope one day he can forgive me and I do hope that one day someone will accept him the way he is. So now after all this that happened I had to go back to the new guy and tell him that he had gotten me sick. He says he didn't know that he was sick and that he has never had any symptoms....i'm not sure if he did know, but all I can say is that we are now together and I really do hope that we end up staying together, not just because we are sick but because we do really care about each other. What I am saying is that please don't give up because someday we will have the vaccine and/or the cure!

I truly do feel everyones pain, I was diagnosed a year and a half ago and had never had any symptoms at all. I never had that horrible and painful initial breakout that I thought every woman had. My doctor explained to me that genital herpes can be dormant for many years, 10+, I had been with my husband for 15 years in a very monogamous relationship. While having my annual papsmear the doctor noticed what simply looked like a small skin tear which is what I had thought it was from shaving and being intimate he tested it and I found out it was genital herpes, my heart sanked. However after the diagnosis, I realized that I had had the same thing happen about a year prior to finding out. I am amazed however that after I received the diagnosis began to have recurrent breakouts (only one lesion each time) every 3 mths like clock work for nearly a year. I then went 8 mths and knew last night when I had excrutiating leg and lower back pain that I would have another and as suspected I have that one lession. I am sharing all of this to let you all know that though there is a horrible stigma that comes with the illness we should know that you don't have to be promiscuious to contract it and it can lay dormant for many years. I am still doing my best to deal with this diagnosis but I'm grateful that my husband has been more than supportive, I couldn't have asked for a better mate. It is my pray that one day soon we will have a cure, to those that are lonely for love I pray that someone will come along with unconditional love, I know he's out there~

I'm going through the same thing, I was diagnosed 11 months ago the day before my birthday to be exact. Since I contracted this disease my self-esteem has taken a nose dive, I don't feel beautiful and confident like I did before this happened and to make matters worse after I confronted the person who gave it to me he stopped talking to me and I didn't get so much as an I'm sorry because he knew he had it. I'm so scared to start dating because I don't want to get close to a person and I tell them that I have this and get rejected,I feel that no one is going to accept me because I have this, I'm still trying to get to a point where I can accept the fact that I have this disease. Although I do have the support of my family and friends this is still an uphill battle for me, I just want to get to a point where I can be okay with it and be myself again.

    Hello everybody,
My wife was tested positive for HSV2 ( before we got married) for some reasons I have only HSV1 for now but I love my wife and we will cope with this. What I want to let everybody know that there is an old Russian folk medicine fungus called Chaga.
It is a fungus which basically grows on the trees but only the one which grows on birch tree ( forgive me for my spelling) has medicinal properties. It is known for it's anti cancer properties but it also has strong immune modulating ( not stimulating)
properties meaning if your immune system is weak it will boost it and if it is overactive it will calm it down, another words it normalizes it. It showed strong antiviral properties as well. If you deside to try it out just do not get it from american sides ( small bottels) because they jus do not contain the amount which would produse the desired effects. Look for chaga dried extract from limonnik corporation from Russia. The down side that those people except only Western Union pymt but I ordered from them and all the time honest and fast transactions. I am NOT one of them or I am not a sales man. Just wanted to let you know about this strong herb. Most people did not report any side effects while consuming chaga even if consumed in very large doses. I ussually get 1 kilo which lasts 8-12 month but the total cost is a bit biting 300 for 1 kilo ( includes shipping)

Danielle, this is an incredibly common disease. It has been linked to:
    1. A threefold increase in the chance of acquiring and transmitting AIDS.
    2. An increased risk of prostate cancer in men.
    3. Huge emotional issues.
    4. Of course, sores, etc.

The most recent studies indicate that between 50 and 75% of ALL unwed women are HSV2 positive, while roughly 50% of all African American women are positive. Knowing this, the CDC recommends against testing for HSV during STD screenings – go figure.

There is a company, Agenus, that may have a cure. Their drug has passed Phase I testing, which means it is SAFE. It has been sitting for a year because they don't have the money to move it forward. Maybe the US government should step in and help them out. Contact your legislator/President to ask for help!

I am almost speechless, I have been suffering with HSV2 positive now for about a year, and I tried everything to get it to go away. I was diagnosed with it about a year ago. Some guy I was with gave it to me, but the doctor said, lucky I didn't have a bad case of it. The doctor told me my levels were very low. I am so saddened by our government that they don't take this disease more seriously. I am so depressed everyday, and I still feel like my life is over, especially ever finding love. This disease is almost worse then Aids, because it spreads so quickly. I feel so bad for everyone the suffers with this nightmare, and my only wish is that our government will support finding a cure quickly. My heart goes out to you all. I cry almost everyday, because I was healthy and someone gave me this terrible disease, and I have two children to look after. I have never told anyone about my diagnosis, because people really make fun of it and its no joke !! If anyone reads this please help support a cure. Bless you all.

I strongly agree that herpes, especially HSV 1 is much worse than HIV. The disease is like venom and is easily spread from your saliva. I have had this disease for 8 years and it is staring to take a toll on my overall health and I not even 30 yet. I have nerve pain in my legs, buttom, face, and basically all over. I think it has spread to my eyes because it is constantly red watery and itchy. I had a baby recently and i'm sure my baby got it too. This disease has destroyed my life and the life of so many others. At this point Herpes is more of a stigma than HIV and in fact herpes is much more common. Why are people in power afraid to talk about this, why is this a big secret when it's so common. We have to break the silence, although I know its hard and very embarrasing. the truthh about this virus has to be told. It's not just some cold sore skin condition, this disease leads to many other disease such as bells palsy, alzhiemer;s, neuropathy, and a host of other diseases including autoimmune diseases. And to all my herpes suffers I pray that one day we will be head, in the name of jesus. Also dont listen to your doctors, they really ignorant about what the disease can do. Get rest, dont eat certain foods, and try BHT as I am about to, as I heard it really helps and can possibly cure....fingers crossed!

This is NOT worse than HIV... You wont die from herpes. I have had it since I was 18... I am 44. I got it from my 2nd boyfriend. I have told everyone that I have been intimate with including my husband (he does not have it) I have been married for almost 19 years...your life is not over...there are much worse things out there. I was devastated the first few years, thinking no one would love me, but you r not alone...20 percent of the population are in the same boat. And only the quality men will stick around and isn't that what you want anyway?

I'm 22 year old male and have been living with herpes for about 13 or 14 years. So I've grown up with herpes
I believe I caught it with my first girlfriend. just an innocent kiss on the lips as a young boy.
I noticed she had something on her lip but I was a kid and it meant nothing to me.
This disease has tormented, humiliated, embarrassed me, ruined my confidence and self esteem.
I hope there is a cure within the next few years so I can have my life back!

What makes you think there is not a cure for herpes already? What makes you think the pathogen believed to cause herpes is superior to you? Did you know that medicine and science only "believe" herpes is caused by a virus? You will find no medical or scientific data stating that herpes is in fact caused by a virus.

Once you know medicine's belief about herpes is wrong it is easily cured but you have to learn the truth about herpes not "medical beliefs" which prove to be dead ends.

I found out that I had the condition last year summer when I was 19. I was never sleeping around, so i can't comprehend how I could be associated with such an awful disease, but many people don't understand is that you don't have to sleep with numerous people to get this disease. This is one of the reasons why its so annoying, I find it so depressing having this because Im so young too, I literally feel like my life is over but I try to put it to the back of my mind and try to live normally, I just concentrate on my career plans and look forward to the future, but there must be a cure!!!!!!!!!! No one should have to live and suffer like this because it can be physically painful and emotional torture. Though I don't get those awful outbreaks any more because of the medication but it can be emotionally stressing. Im now with my boyfriend of 6-7months, and I have not told him yet! im so scared that if he found out he would leave me and I love this guy to bits he hasn't got anything yet touch wood but I feel I should tell him soon just in case he gets the virus i just have to keep faithful

      EVERYONE READ THIS!!!!

Ive just had a great idea, apparently alot of doctors and researchers are close to finding a cure but lack the funds to complete their research. What if we set up a website and try and get as many people with herpes and even those without herpes to donate one dollar each. If the statistics are right we could end up with alot of money to put towards this research and in end find a cure for all of us and even if we dont find a cure the most each of us will be loosing is one dollar and i say its a risk worth taking.

I know how you feel. I was 19-years old when I got this dreadful disease 18 years ago. I am seeing someone that I absolutely now adore and I am trying to find a way to tell him my condition. I just dont know how. It really hurts. I am having a severe outbreak right now and I feel horrible. There are times when I want to wake up from this nightmare! I dont know how he would react-rejection is scary. I was not a promiscuous young woman and I caught this from a guy when I believe knew he had this. My life changed forever. I wish I could take back ever meeting him, so that I can start life over. I Pray that there is a cure found. I will Pray for you along with everyone on this site that we will all be cured within a few months or less. Hey, we have to keep the faith and continue to fight for the cure.

Do you really think that is the right way to handle that with this guy that "you love to bits"? You don't want to tell him because you're afraid that he might leave youi? That's kind of immature and selfish actually. Not to mention you are just contributing to spreading it by putting him at risks of contracting it without giving him the benefit of knowing what he's dealing with. (I think you would probably expect the same from him)...What do you think he'll do if he contracts it from you and he finds out that you had it without telling him? Yeah, he'll not only leave you but he'll probably hate you and never speak to you again. You might want to use your smarts here a little and realize he will most likely 'respect' you more for being honest with him. Do the right thing and stop being so selfish. You're more worried about having someone around to keep you from feeling lonely than you are with treating your BF like a human being who deserves to know your status.

I have done some research since I have got it from my girlfriend about three years ago; and the reason we don’t have a cure for this horrible disease yet is the pharmaceutical giants with big bucks and power. They do not want to come up with a medicine to stop the spread of this disease yet, more they delay more people get infected and that is just fine with them as they make money with the suppressant drugs. This is really the sad part and small labs with dedicated researchers are short of money and resources, there is no doubt that if the big pharmaceuticals put some money behind the research we would come up with a medicine that would stop the spread of this horrible disease once and for all.
According to the experts over 50 million of Americans are infected with herpes and if you take this number and do a simple percentage math you come up with a staggering number of 1 billion people worldwide and that is just music for the ears of the big giant drug companies and the number is growing every day. This disease with this high number of infected population must have been gone by now if drug companies put some effort to come up with a medicine to cure it but now according to the above article we have to wait for 10 more years and this is just not right.

Wow Gino, you have real intuition.

Did you know that medicine and science cannot even isolate the supposed "herpes" virus. They claim to be studying the herpes virus but they can't even see the supposed virus. How could they cure something they can't even prove exist in the first place?

How can they claim that ONLY one pathogen can causes the IgG antibody response that makes a supposed herpes test positive. Humans have only five antibody responses, IgG, IgA, IgM, IgD and IgE. That means there can only be 5 types of test to diagnose ONLY 5 types of pathogens yet there are hundreds of diseases that test for one or more of these antibodies for testing purposes.

There is no herpes test that detects and actual virus. Most detect the IgG antibody that can be a response to any one of a thousand pathogens. The PCR test is said to detect the viruses DNA but how do they have DNA from a virus they can't catch or isolate?

Gino, I have no doubt that that has played into it as least somewhat. But last year we finally got a generic for Valtrex, so that will go a long way into making the herpes finance machine less lucrative. And for everyone that wants to argue with me, 50M folks in the US and hundreds of millions more outside the US makes for recurring profits if no cure exists. It's really not paranoia, it's just common sense. We don't live in Utopia. People are people.

HOWEVER, I'm quite sure the reason we don't have a cure even from indepedent groups isn't just lack of funding, it's the fact that this is a virus. Virus' encode into your DNA and so the body does not realize that something foreign is present. It merely immuno-reacts to repair symptomatic dmg. No Virus has ever been cured to my knowledge. Eradicated yes, by means of isolation until the disease's lifecycle goes extinct, but that's all.

I understand the nature of the beast, but I am hopeful, very much so.

I told the last few gf's since i found out. None of them had an issue with it, and I gained a great deal of self-respect for telling people. This isn't a curse, and most people have it – it's just stigmatised because of society. Live healthy (as you should be doing anyway), deal with the odd outbreak even if it's clockwork (like mine – 1 every 2 months). Not a problem – and if you ever get a rejection, know that that person was never meant for you. The One will accept you for who you are "warts 'n all", if you excuse the pun...

Hey Dave! Thanks for your words of encouragement. I am 38 male and never had std before until last year when i found out that i have this awful disease. I think i got from the girl from work after a brief relationship. Since then i feel like my life is over.
I am afraid to get to the new relation because i don't want to pass this to someone else. I won't be able to forgive myself if this happens to someone because of me. From reading your post, now i feel like i have guts to tell somebody before we jump to the relationship.
Hopeful the cure is in the near future.

  20. Rest Of The Story

Rome says: "Virus' encode into your DNA and so the body does not realize that something foreign is present. It merely immuno-reacts to repair symptomatic dmg. No Virus has ever been cured to my knowledge. Eradicated yes, by means of isolation until the disease's lifecycle goes extinct, but that's all."

@ Rome- What do you mean "no virus has ever been cured"? Who would want to cure a virus? I think you mean no one has been cured of a virus? Curing someone of a virus or any pathogen isn't a medical objective. All that has to be done to cure someone of a virus is to kill the virus/pathogen and Lysol can kill any virus so it isn't that we do not have the technology. The Valtrex Patent is up for a reason, to pave the way for the next new drug that can't cure herpes and the generic valtrex will be purchased by people who can't afford premium drug prices so the "Herpes" drug market continues to grow and gets more profitable with each new drug, each donation, each expired patent and each new patent.

As for the "SUPER VIRUS" that encodes in human DNA. That's pretty big talk being that medicine and science cannot even view a supposed living "herpes" virus. Science can't claim a pathogen of any kind "encodes" with our DNA if they can't even isolate the supposed "virus".

NO PATHOGEN encodes to our DNA. There is no pathogen superior to humans. Curing what is known as herpes is no more difficult than disinfecting counter tops. There just needs to be a reason to kill the pathogen that is said to cause what is known as "herpes".

Facts that can't be disputed for those "who want to argue".

Your doctor has never seen a supposed "herpes" virus.
There are no herpes test that detect and actual herpes "virus".
Blood test detect and antibody not a pathogen of any kind.
PCR test are said to detect DNA of a supposed "virus" that medicine and science cannot isolate or see, so that has no merit.
The human body produces only FIVE antibodies, there is no way to link the IgG antibody to any particular pathogen.
There is no solid evidence that the disease known as "herpes" is a virus because again, no one can even see said virus.
As long as people pretend that the disease known as "herpes" is a "super virus" superior to man, there will never be a cure because there will never be a demand for a cure.

There is no possible way to make a cure for the disease known as "herpes" profitable and that is why science and medicine mislead you all into believing herpes is a super virus instead of a easily destroyable pathogen that it is.

Sorry for the bad news. Keep in mind condom does not protect you from all kinds of std especially genital herpes and warts because it does not cover the entire genital area. The virus can be pass to other areas that are not covered so do not blame
yourself. Through treatment and support from friends and family you will be able to live a normal life. Don't stress to much because this will make your outbreaks become severe.
Stay positive and things will be alright.

Whenever you see a happy couple together, it is highly statistically possible that at least one of them has a form of HSV.

Also, if you want to meet someone without being rejected for your status, there are a lot of dating sites for ppl with HSV1 or HSV2.

Funny how you are so careless and crass when it comes to censor-ship about a diseases that science and medicine do not understand well enough to cure or do not care to cure. If what David says is true, naturally he would be desperate to get the truth out when people like yourself see to it that the information is cen-sored and removed. It doesn't matter if it is true or not if the information is cen-sored and removed so people do not have access to it.

Apparently David is spot on when he says the truth is cen-sored. You seem so proud of it. God bless American and freedom of speech.

I've had herpes for 20 years. While I was devistated at the beginning, I decided to just be up front with guys before I slept with them. Out of the 20 years, only 2 guys ended the relationship. I have been married twice and neither of my ex-husbands contracted it. To my knowledge, I have not passed it on to anyone. One out five people have this, but no one admits to it. Chances are that the person you disclose it to also has it. They just aren't decent enough to say it. Do the right thing, tell people you want to be intimate with what you have. Don't be afraid. Take care of yourself with diet and excersize and try to stay positive. That does so much to minimize outbreaks. Really, it is so not the end of the world.

I've been reading some of the posts here of people who have just contracted herpes. Let me just say that I am 49 years old and have had herpes for 30 years. Yes, it sucks having it but I have never been rejected because I told someone. I am in a long term relationship and when I have an outbreak or starting to feel an outbreak, I just say "watch out for my spot". My "spot" is on my upper thigh so dont fall into a sense of being protected just because you use a condom. We put a big band-aid on it and then wrap a towel around my thigh for extra protection when we're intimate. Keep in mind that a condom protects against diseases carried by bodily fluids and/or lesions that are underneath the condom but if the herpes sore is on the outside of the condom you may still contract it. I dont bother taking any medication for it, I've just learned to live with it.

One more thing I want to mention. If you have herpes, you need to be careful around the outbreak area because it is possible for you to spread it to other areas of you body. Having it in one place does not immunize the rest of your body.

Look ladies and Gentlemen, If you want to get used to it and if your getting only cold sores then refrain from using any treatment, as in time your immune system will start to work a way around the virus. Ive had this pretty much all my life, and now the cold sores only last a couple of days. If you use medication it'll just get worse, in fact the best remedy for a cold sore is toothpaste (but the white stuff only) as it dries the mother f**er right out. apart from that, i see it as an incentive to keep healthy and active. The better you eat and the fitter you are the less you get them. I only get something like 2 a year, which is nothing in the great scheme of things. Don't worry about them. I realized the more i worry about them the more i get them.

Look, yes its devastating.. I wont even say at furst because ive had it for years and it still stresses me out more than anyone can imagine. I wasnt going to date ecer again but finally when i met a guy that had it, he told me upfront! Since i had it too i was comfortable with seeing him. That helped me realize that you can tell people. He told me how it was for jim telling girls about his condition.. He got rejections and he didnt. So, after we broke up i did the same thing. I dated tgree guys and non of them cared i had it!! Of course i explained to them that i got it from my first partner...
    Yes i said FIRST!
And i told them how i voed not to date anyone so as not to pass it along to anyone else. Each agreedthat as long as we were cautious they were ok with us!
I too felt like i could not have the children i so desperatly wanted, for fear they would be born with complications or me with issues from a c section.. But here u am today in a commited relationship. My guy still has not been affected with this even though i have it. I have a one and a half yearold extremly healthy son who was born without a c section and without complications or tge virus! Andi have anoher baby on the way.
This is such a common tjing these days.. Mainly because si many people have it but havent been diagnosed, soit gets spread like wildfire! Jstcause a person says they dont have anstd, doesnt mean theydont.. They just may not know!

Non of you should fret.. Duke university has had a break through in their research and if all goes as planned they hope to have their meds out by 2016.. Thats five years.. Not as long as youd think!! Their breakthrough isnt a cure that will eradicate it but it is to suppress the virus entirely so it will no longer be a threat. Im happy with that!

Untill thrn, be honest about your condition because the ones that freak out over it arent the ones worth having in your life.

There are about 100 million Americans who have it. You don't know who has it. Not everyone gets cold sores who has it. Some show no symptoms at all and they don't even know they have it. Some know they have it and willingly spread it, because they have a dim view of their life as well as the lives of others.

You know how you're different? You are responsible enough to accept you have it and that you know you can pass it to others. There are a ton of dating sites and support groups. If you end up dating someone who doesn't have it, you will of course have to tell him you have it. There is a very high statistical chance he will have it too, because it is shockingly common in our world. Because of the stigma, there is not enough discussion about it. Thus, more unnecessary misery is created by this very common disease.

This healingunderground site that is mentioned in some of the comments on this site is nothing but a scam in my opinion, it asks for money in order to give any information which turned me off right away, if a site offering some kind of a cure for all the incurable diseases it claims it has then it would make so much money by shear number of people hitting on the site that they don’t need to charge to display any information. Ladies and gentleman there is no cure for herpes yet and if anybody tells you otherwise please question their intentions.
The best remedy in my opinion is that you don’t let this disease control your life and drag you down mentally and physically; try to keep your mind and therefore your body healthy by eating good and exercising as much as you can and taking over the counter supplement like Lysine and your doctor’s prescribed medication and all these steps unfortunately are only suppressants until a real cure comes to the market.

I've had herpes for a little over a year now never had an outbreak until about 8 months after the initial contact only one ive had and its been about a year so far. Im going into my Junior year at college. I consider myself lucky ive only had one outbreak, knock on wood. I understand how hard living with this disease can be but honestly it could be one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Not a day goes by I dont regret having a one night stand where I was so drunk I was slurring every word out of my mouth. Ever since that day I wake up and look myself In the mirror and realize how lucky I am to be alive and remind myself what I truly want to accomplish with my life. This disease has changed the way I eat, the way I exercise, I watch everything that goes into my body including alcohol. I don't sleep around not that I really ever did before. Im not a jesus freak but I feel like this disease was almost put here as an obstacle in life that a lot of people must overcome almost as a test. Only you can control your destiny but for me this disease has given me a whole new window to view life out of. I can honestly say this disease will allow me to live the much healthier, cleaner, lifestyle I never thought I'd see myself living. I hope all of you can one day feel the same way as me. And if we all stopped paying for our prescriptions and sent the money toward finding a cure we would have one by now in my opinion. Pharmacy's make money off of this more then a lot of other drugs they sell they would pay to keep the cure on the hush hush once again just my opinion

I started reading a lot about this after a very good friend confided to me that her "stress" cold sores were due to HSV1. I told this story to another friend (who did not know and never met the other) and he said he had it! My second friend never has shown any symptoms of HSV1 that I remember. He said he had a fling with a woman in his twenties who had lied about her history and also had lied about being tested. They'd used condoms but they would go down on each other. Condoms are not 100% herpes-proof...especially if you go down. Most guys do.

I recently caught the disuse a few mouths ago, I actually accepted the fact that I must learn to live with it. At first I was very depressed about it and put me down for a few months. Its not that bad when I get it and this is the second outbreak I have had, one thing that scares me the most now is that I wasn't sure how long I've had this before and I don't want to spread it to other parts of my body. I have two cats that I like to play with and sometimes they cut my hands. I didn't know I had a small cut on my middle finger and when I say small, I mean SMALL not visible at all, and I was using hair remover cream on my genital area and I felt a slight sting on the cut. That's when I noticed the microscopic cut :(. I am so horrified that I transmitted it to my finger. What are the chances, did I feel a sting cause the hair remover or that the virus went into my cut? UGH

I would also like to find a pen-pal that I can exchange Emails with. I feel very lost due to the fact I can not really speak to any one about what I have other than a doctor which isn't much help, cause he only understands through a medical point. A little about myself, I am 18, female, live in the US. Soon to go to beauty school around October 2011 to take cosmetology, of course. I have a boyfriend, I don't care about gender male or female. I just want someone I can confided in and vice versa, be helped and help someone. If you are interested I have an Email, just contact me at xjbunix@aol.com. Either IM me or Email me, I will be surely to get back to you. Thank you for your time

I am really amazed that no one has said anything about hydrogen peroxide! No I don't know if it can lead to a cure, but I think doctors should start looking into it. This is just my story... I had an outbreak(I have HV1 and HV2) on my penis with more then a couple of blistrs and I didn't have any medication. So I just wondered what would happen if I put peroxide on it and sure enough it started to bubble. So I wanted to read on it and read some good reviews and some not so good. So I figured what do I have to lose, what 0.85 cent at the a dolla store.... So what I did is pour the peroxide into a plastic disposable cup and inserted my penis and testicles into the cup and held it there for about 10 to 15 minutes( i may have over done it with that)and waited for the bubbling to cease. The peroxide got warm from all the activity thatwas going on. And the next day I woke up I took a look down there and notice that it had stop spreading so Idid it agian later that day and the next day noticed that laisions were gone and it was healing rather fast!!! Although it was pretty warm down there for a couple of days. Bu I was so surprised. And it's a simple household product. You don't have to beleive me it just my story of what I've done. But ask yourself this one question, what do I hae to lose, 0.85 cent?

I was diagnosed with genital herpes in 2006 when I was 24 years old. It was one lesion, but a big one. I took acyclovir to help the symptoms. When I stopped taking the medicine, I realized my outbreaks were alot less. You need to rely on your own immune system to help control this. Since then, I met the man of my dreams. I told him I have herpes and he is ok with it. We are now married with a baby on the way. Of course I worry about giving it to him. I get paranoid whenever he says he feels like he is getting sick. But, nevertheless, he knows. So you CAN find love. You don't have to tell the world you have herpes, no one I know knows that I have it except for my husband. Just be responsible and tell the people you plan on sleeping with. Odds are, they have it too. And quit making this seem like a death sentence. Sure, I was sad for the first year, but you have to tell yourself to grow up. My mom says it best "everybody has something". This is only the beginning of your life, not the end. Xo
