When will we see a herpes cure?As a feature of CNNhealth.com, our team of expert doctors will answer readers' questions. Here's a question for Dr. Gupta. From Lloyd Bartley, Bowling Green, Kentucky “How close are scientists to developing a cure for herpes, figuratively speaking will we be seeing a break through in 10, 20, or even 30 years?” Answer: Well, Lloyd, there is good news and bad news on the herpes front. The good news: Researchers have made serious strides and now better understand the mechanism behind herpes outbreaks. The bad news: There is very little funding for that research. After receiving your question we reached out to a leading herpes expert, Bryan Cullen, the director at the Center for Virology at Duke University. Cullen is hopeful that a cure for herpes could come within 10 years, once funding hurdles are crossed. Nearly one in five people over age 12 in the U.S. is affected by herpes. It is caused by a virus - either the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both strains can cause genital herpes, but HSV-1 usually infects the mouth and produces cold sores. Despite funding challenges, Cullen and his team are inching closer to a cure. They conducted a study recently that identified the pathway herpes takes as it infects. They now know how herpes embeds itself into the cells and how it eludes treatment. Now that they have honed in on the physiology of the disease - and its triggers - researchers believe they are steps closer to creating drugs that could cure herpes. While we wait for a cure, there are drugs out there that can at least suppress herpes. Three antiviral drugs: acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir are commonly recommended to quell outbreaks. A physician might recommend taking these drugs when an outbreak occurs to quiet symptoms; or taking them continuously to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak. And of course the best way to avoid spreading herpes is to abstain from sex, but if you are sexually active, engage in safe-sex practices such as using condoms. There is simply way too much money in treating various forms of the Herpes Virus. No way would a western medical industry destroy a major cash cow which pours billions of dollars into their pockets.
Vile fat cat drug companies, just the same as the bankers. Screwing everyone else over while they pocket a load of cash from the public and the wider health services. There will NEVER be a cure for herpes while they are making money from all these drugs.... i hate them..... if any one of these drugs companies had a shred of decency they would do some about this as it has a profound effect on your life.... for the rest of your life.
You are right, but nobody has ever tried lighting a fire under their ass. Nobody wants to be known for having the virus, for some reason there is some stupid stigma because people are not dying from it like aids. But emotionally, people are dying everyday. It is time to push. Too many innocent people are living their life isolated, I heard a story recently about a 13 year old who had a cold sore and transmitted it to her vaginal area because she didn't wash her hands.. Does she really deserve to spend the rest of her life that way??? Having to disclose that to her first sexual encounter? Then an eighteen year old who had her first sexual encounter and was surprised to find she was inflicted. Enough is enough, I don't understand why this has been acceptable in society when the numbers rise every year, even w/protection people are not safe.
Whenever I don't use valtrex or acyclovir I get oral outbreaks maybe once every couple months. But I have tried both drugs and I swear I break out much more frequently. I'm talking like twice a month or so. Ive tried both daily and just at the onset. Has anyone else experienced this?
Gary, you are a moron. There is no way you would have forgotten what the name of the pill was if it cured you from something like this.
Natural products way outperform pharmaceuticals. May trials have been done including one for nosodes that had 82% not having any recurrences and tests for Hypericum Mysorense!. However no one will pay to study these as they cannot be patented!
I am sickened that there is no cure. I have genital herpies & not sure how i got it. Doctors seem to think that i received it from an ex-boyfriend of 8 years. I got a fairly large tattoo on my lower back, above my crack & found out after leaving my ex, 3 years later, that i have herpies in the area of my tattoo. They think that as the tattoo was healing i might have been infected from my ex possibly with his secreations entering my blood stream. Although, supposisly, he claims he doesn't have the virus. All doctors i have been to, OBGYN, dermatologist, emergency room's, primary care doctors, all except an eye doc or a dentist, cannot fathom how i can have it in the area where i do. i don't really have any sex at all anymore. which i really do not take valtrex anymore. (which is now in generic form) in the 4 years i have had this, i have only had 3 outbreaks. i was also retested, hoping that is was only a case of the shingles...which was negative & yes i do have herpes. we DO need a cure. there would be a lot less depression for all of us who suffer.
I agree with pepe1970 on lighting their tails on fire and start expecting some results. Its ridiculous to say that 1 out of 5 people have herpes but its still not funded enough to find a cure! I am 18 and just a few days ago I found out that my life has just changed by this. I'm in emotional and physical pain right now and I probably will be again when I have to tell the guy I love I can't be with him because of this. Or if I want children. I want a cure already.
If someone asked me how to cure HPV I would tell them how I did. I took 3 to 4 Red Marine Algae capsules daily, each capsule contains 375mg. On the max it’s a total of 1.5g or 1500mg daily of Red Marine Algae. At the same time I was taking, daily, 3 capsule of a Lysine mix “super Lysine +”, it’s marketed as an immune system boost. Each capsule contained 1500mg of l-Lysine, 200mg of Garlic Bulb, 100mg Vitamin C, 100mg of Echinacea Whole Plant, and a few others. I think the most important part of that mix is Lysine.
I did the daily doses listed above, drank a little more water the normal, ate a little healthier until the symptoms, warts, disappeared on their own. After a month they just went away and I stopped taking the supplements, went back to normal life. It’s been just about three years and no signs of anything. I’ve read this a few time on other sites and feel compelled to pass on one last bit of advice of, take the supplements religiously, no skipping days. I would consider missing a pill “Ok” because I did but I always took the same daily amount, even if that meant taking two or three pills at a time.
I’m not a Doctor, that’s just what worked for me.
I have started a website based upon cure research for herpes hsv-2. you can look at it at https://sites.google.com/site/herpescure2011/
It is a shame that so many people are affected by this.
1 in 5 people in the US?? It's a phenominal amount.
It is suprising that people seem to accept that there is no cure, but as quite rightly mentioned earlier, the pharmaceutical companies that supply the suppressants are very unlikey to change their ways.
If I was Company A, supplying millions of people with weekly, if not daily drugs at $x per packet, why would I give them one tablet that would cure them forever. They'd have to sell them at (a guess) $100,000 per tablet.
(You have to remember also that if you worked for the company you could have the cure 'tablet' as long as you're pals with someone in R&D. It's not what you know ;-))
It is now becoming more apparent that Herpes can be a cause of Cervical cancer which may add some weight to assisting the sufferers in their cause. But that then leads to another debate of anti-cancer drugs... and it goes on.
Best of luck everyone! I'm sick of it too.
I was diagnosed yesterday with HS2. I've never cried harder in my life. My boyfriend wasn't aware that cold sores were a strain of herpes, so he never informed me. I would have known better if he had told me. But due to his lack of knowledge, my life will never be the same. I full intend to live the rest of my life as healthy as possible and to never transmit this disease if I can help it. Yet, I still hold out for a cure. I need to believe that there is a possibility someday I can be healthy again. That I can look down and not want to cry until I die.
healyourstd . com
People need to know about that they can cure this!
They just cured AIDS. First AIDS infected man in history to be cured outright. God bless modern science. There must be a cur after hearing this. Google it, people. his name is "something Andrews". Just look up "First man to be cured of AIDS" & I'm sure it'll pop up. Stem-cell transplant for Leukemia as a primary condition. AIDS secondary. They made sure to transplant donor had a genetic mutation that made he/she resistant to the AIDS virus. The recipient now tested NEGATIVE for the AIDS virus. Many people would pay half their paycheck every week or two weeks indefinitely for a cure. I think Big Pharma would be interested in that money.
It's a difficult question. Since the mechanism involves inserting the viral genome into the host's, there is no way of "curing" the disease, except to cut out the already inserted viral sequence. Constantly suppressing outbreak, in my opinion, does not constitute a "cure", but rather, a way to have the disease under control, much like AIDS nowadays.
Many viruses (like the common cold and flu) are "cured" by our immune systems once the infection is destroyed by our T-cells. The difference with the Herpes virus is that some of the viral particles go into a state of latency and can not be recognized by our immune systems. Under stress, some of the virus can "reactivate" and cause another active infection. The group at Duke is actively looking for a way to take all of the viral particles out of this latency stage so that they could be destroyed completely by our immune system (and further replication can be supressed by antiviral drugs)
I think one way to pull all of the particles out is by fire!! Im serious a few years back I had oral outbreaks sometimes twice a month. Then one day I was driving and asked my boyfriend to light me a cigarette, he handed it to me backwards and I stuck the lit end directly onto my mouth. It blistered up like crazy and I had the most horrible herpes outbreak for a couple of weeks but I did not have another outbreak on my mouth ever after that!! And that was 5 years ago!
Yeah right, 1 in 5 people have herpes and the best way to stop its spread is to abstain from sex. Good luck getting 1 in 5 people to abstain. Of course, if everyone only had sex with people their same age, then all sexually transmitted diseases would die out in a couple generations.
This is not true since STD's can be passed on to infants from their infected mothers.
That is the most stupid thing I have ever heard. This virus has been around for more then 30 years and even w/protection, you are still at risk. There's a girl who is 13, which got it from a cold sore from her mouth & transmitted it to her vagina. Sad. Plus you can get it even when a person doesn't have a break out/sore. Not everyone who has the virus has sores, some have it for years and don't even know. So your plan doesn't make nay sense.
I know that many are concerned about genital herpes etc. But I have to wonder if any of this research could help with varicella. Chickenpox can be deadly, especially in adults. And I'm going to my doc tomorrow because I'm pretty sure I have an adult case. I wasn't counting my chickenpox until they hatched. They have.
Ella,
This research is aimed at activating latent viral particles, it would not lessen infection/symptoms. However, chickenpox virus is also a virus that lies latent in the body and can later reactivate as shingles. This research could prevent a shingles outbreak in a person who has already had chickenpox later in life
Depending on your age...there is a vaccine for that virus which works. It doesn't make sense there isn't one for herpes after all this time.
When was the last time we found a cure for any disease. I am convinced the health care system of today has a much greater desire to treat than cure. We also act as if many of the diagnostic procedures are cures when in reality all they do is lead to managing and treating which is not a bad thing but I don't see any real effort to cure any disease. What about true prevention like eating correctly, exercising and overcoming nutrient insufficiencies? All we do for the most part is give it lip srevice!
True, but there is a cure for shingles now isn't there. And treatment doesn't help innocent people who have been inflicted who have to spend the rest of their lives suffering emotional death. I't no different then abuse, it changes who you are as a person.
Cure? You mean like a vaccine for polio or what pennicillin did for a host of ailments????? These companies will never make that mistake again...too much money being spent to stop a cure.
well politics and the heath care systom does not work neither does the media, DO SOME THING ABOUT IT walk up thier, pull them out of their offices and throw them all out and start over dont go empty handed because they will use weapon against you you might want what they have fair is fair and enough is enought stand up this needs to stop they don't care about you only your money and our so called goverment is backs them not you because when you martch up their they your goverment will send their storm troopers out to stop sho thats right you. RISE UP ENOUGH IS ENOUGH stop being scared if you want it to stop and change go make the change. Your goverment lol they are not their for you just your money one of you gets in the way of their money who are they going to kill thats right YOU. Get up gosh dang people the old america had balls but corperations and taken over your goverment now go GET IT BACK.
Well I got it from the person first I was ever with intimately. We were dated seriously and talking about marriage. It had made my immune system hypersensitive. I hope they find a cure soon.
I just got it, The woman knowingly gave it to me. She had it in her head that because she had the "mind over matter" idea, she was ok. Now i'm screwed.
Well I got it from the person first I was ever with intimately. We were dating seriously and talking about marriage. It had made my immune system hypersensitive. I hope they find a cure soon.
I first started getting cold sores more than 40 years ago (about the time I started puberty). I participated in the acyclovir studies back in the 80s but found that the most effective treatment for the mouth sores was L-Lysine. I also get the sores in my ears and nose but have to take Valtrex for them.
About 20 years ago, my husband passed a version of the virus on to me that appears ONLY in the vicinity of my tailbone. Stress makes the outbreaks more frequent and severe but Zovirax helps. What doctors and researchers may not know is that this specific virus also affects my hip bones. Yes, I've heard a number of times that the herpes viri are partial to specific nerves but, in my case, I can tell when an outbreak is in the offing by the extreme pain in my hip bones themselves.
Does anyone else experience this? Are doctors/researchers aware of it?
OMG! Pat, I have had herpes for the past 16 years that also only affects my tail bone area caused mostly by stress. I have also had a lot of hip problems that I have often wondered if it was related to the virus. You may have something here. Unfortunately, I have had a hard time finding a doctor that really knows anything about the virus. They just prescribe me more Valtrex and send me on my way. It's quite annoying really. It would be nice if there was someone out there who knew more about it.
I roo have that feeling , this makes me sick . I notice it every time my hip bone clickrd
Yes I also get pain in the hips also in the buttocks I can always tell when a outbreak is coming get a pinching pain in the testical weird,, belive this has caused arthritis in my hips. Once it subsides feel much better I am 40yrs old and have had this 15 yrs hopefully soon a cure for this horrible disease for someone who did not sleep around like many people do tried to be careful as I got it from my ex wife a fews years after being with her just not fair for anyone with this take care!!
I get muscle pain in my leg muscles it makes my skin feel super sensitive
I get all that pain, legs, buttocks etc. I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing urinary troubles, such as increased frequency and troubles with starting. Docters keep pointing to prostate but I'm not convinced.
I have the pain start in my left shoulder. I think your right too
yes I have the same thing in my hip and legs, I also had meningitis and this herpes went to the nerves on the base of my neck, it now has damaged my vestibuler nerve I have a hard time walking because I'm so dizzie, it comes and goes about every month.
I have hip bursitis as well but ofcourse I can't find anything yet that ties the two together.
As a constant sufferer of cold sores from the age of 5, I understand the pain and humiliation that can come from this virus. There have been times in my life where my mouth was covered by sores to the point where I could only eat cold food off of a spoon. I have lost feeling to most of my bottom lip, the end of my nose, and a spot on my forehead from repeated outbreaks in the same area. When Valtrex came along, I was elated as it was the only medication that seemed to reduce the number of outbreaks I had, but I continued to have them on a regular basis.
Several years ago my aunt was diagnosed with Celiac disease. As she learned about the disease, she shared information with me about a possible link between gluten and herpes. I have not been tested for Celiac myself, but have adopted a gluten free diet and have been relatively outbreak free for two years now. Significant stress and an actual cold will still result in an outbreak. Adopting this new diet has truly changed my life but I wish there were more information known about what the possible connection might be between herpes and Celiac and/or gluten intolerance.
I am not sure if I understand this. A herpes cure? There is already a herpes cure. I know this for a fact. I had herpes years ago but I also have Cadasil.
I use marijuana for a slew of treatments and one of them was curing my herpes. My doctor says I have no herpes. After he told me I had herpes years ago. Please Dr Gupta I know you are a Doctor and a good one but it seems you to are afraid to speak about this life saving plant and the millions of dollars we continue to waste and save for other life threatening diseases.
I am sorry but you seem to me as corporate hound listening to the lies people continue to tell.
A plant that causes no cancer a plant that has shown to kill cancers, There are many people like myself who are tired of the lies that continue to be spread. DO NOT BE ONE OF THEM!
How did you use it? Did you just smoke it? Or are there other ways? And how long did it take to cure it? Let me know what to do!
Fernando, I agree with you when it comes to the legal status of marijuana, but to claim that it has cured your herpes implies that your critical thinking facilities might need a break from the herb. You can test negative for herpes when it´s in its latent state and about half of the people who contract the virus don´t suffer any more outbreaks after their first (lucky bastards).
Shortly after my 21st birthday i was having discomfort so i went to the e-room and was told i had a bacterial infection which ive had in the past but 2 days later a call came in that ive also tested positive for herpes i thought it was a bad dream an i was about to awake but nope no dream they asked for a number 4 me to give so they can call in acyclovir and a numbing gel. Ive cried now everyday for a week now just out of nowhere breaking down Ive missed work family functions and just cant stop thinking why me. Even preferring to be dead i just feel like im just to forever get my heart broke over and over again in life considering i am an honest person. who will risk there health for me i know no matter how much i would b into a person i would never continue a relationship with them if i found they had what i now have My b-friend broke up with me pointing fingers and ive even already told some guys just some they can leave me alone the first word that comes out FOREVER I didn't even have a blood test done yet I really dont even see any bumps or many soars on my genital area and none in my mouth Im just very emotional and im sure if i wasn't brought up in christian faith and didnt think i would go to hell for taking my own life i would do it, My cousin also gave me hope saying she had it for years and had kids with her ex and now husband and neither never got it i she said she just avoided intercourse while she had breakouts I just dont understand this and only if i could be so lucky.. But i do thank whoever created this website it did give me comfort and hope of a soon day cure and thankyou to the researchers working on a cure that im praying 4 please do not give up
How or what was done with the marijuana that really cured it?
Man are you messing with me, considering everyone that smokes herb. Don't You don't think the rest of the world notice suddenly.
THIS SO NOT TURE I BEEN SMOKING WEED FOR YEARS.AND JUST STOP SMOKING WEED AND I STILL WAS HAVE OUTBREAKS BUT I DOES HELP ME RELAX SO I CAN DEAL WITH LIFE!!!!!!
What kind of marijuana did you smoke Fernanado, to get rid of Herpes???? How do you know that you do not have the virus any more?? Did you have another blood test??? Or did your smoking marijuana just manage the outbrakes??? I would honestly like to hear more about your cure for herpes, if it really is a cure.
what plant is this? why dont you share so we can try?
I think that smoking marijuana helps keep the HSV-1 down. I'm in my mid twenties and got my first cold sore a year ago and I never even knew that cold sores were herpes. I thought that it was just what it's called... a sore you get when you have a cold. For that reason I was fine with my first cold sore because I didn't know any better until recently when I started getting more outbreaks, which led me to start researching why I was getting these. Also because I didn't get my second cold sore until a year after the first one. I got my second cold sore when I got really sunburned. It went away for a few months but recently I had to quit smoking pot and ever since I quit smoking it they pop up one after another. I don't know if it is because the weed kept me from being so stressed or if it's because it kept this nasty virus at bay but I'm sick of this because I'm a relatively healthy person who eats well and stays in shape.
It has been really depressing knowing now that I have HSV-1 and wondering what kind of health problems it will lead me to have in the future. I don't even know how I got it because I've been with the same girl for years now who doesn't even have it. She seems alright with it but only time will tell. I'm doing everything I can not to infect her. I'm trying to stay strong and I pray to god that there is a cure found very SOON for everybody and myself who suffers from this. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read about all of this to diagnose myself and to be more aware of this virus. Too bad though that I have to stay out of the public when I have these things around my mouth, which has been the past month. God Bless.
So, this plant is called cadasil? Give me more info please!
I've had that same theory for a while. I cant say that it cures herpes, but it does act as a preventative measure against contracting it. I really do believe that marijuana has an infinite amount of healing properties and it is not by coincidence that they have criminalized it.
Hi Fernando,
Would you please tell me more about how you were cured from herpes? Can anyone go to Dr. Gupta? I was jst diagnosed with simplex 2 and would appreciate any advice.
Thank you,
Kat
Hi Fernando,
Would you please tell me more about how you were cured from herpes? Can anyone go to Dr. Gupta? I was just diagnosed with simplex 2 and would appreciate any advice.
Thank you,
Kat
The article said that one in five of the population over the age of 12 is infected. The article said that the best way to avoid spreading the virus is to abstain from unsafe sex. How does a 12 year old contract this virus?
Parents?
By having a cold sore and not washing before they wipe. I recently heard of a mother talking about her 13 year old daughter contracting it that way, very sad.
A drinking fountain at Disneyland (when I was 3).
Here is how you fix this stop buying all the meds and give what you would pay for meds to duke university to get it done till it does stay on them tho and demand on knowing where all the money goes for this and maybe even visits to see the research lets create our own tribunal to make sure they do what is intended with our money stop buying the drugs send it to duke stop making corp pokets fatter so stop if you want a cure they will never get or find the cure if you keep feeding them... point blank dont be stupid
@ sill whats the address of the university and how much mney, how d we get in contact with those ppl? do we have to go to fox 2 news or what let me know because i will go to the ends of the earth to see this through. just tel me who do i have to write and talk to
They are not going to cure herpes or anything else that can be treated indefinetly with the side effect of profits. Try lysine an amino acid that has helped many many people keep this virus dormant. You can buy it at any health food store, it is inexpensive and of course it is not covered by insurance since insurance companies stand to profit from treating disease not curing disease. I use it for fever blisters whenever I feel the first sign of outbreak. I then take a couple of tablets every hour or two for a couple of days and the blisters never develop into a mature stage. Fever blisters and herpes are end products of the same virus and while I have never had herpes i am told by many of our listeners on "Duke and the Doctor" our nationally syndicated radio show that it works for them. For more info on natural remedies that actually help your body to heal itself rather than drug therapies that treat but do little if anythjing to heal listen to http://dukeandthedoctor.com/. We inform and entertain while helping you on the road to health.
why do you have to be such a downer? to all the ppl who keep saying "they'll never find a cure blah blah blah" why don't you just keep that to yourself. i'm sorry you're depressed about it, we all are. get over yourself. do you know how many medical advancements we've made in the last decade? they would probably make more money off of the cure rather than the treatment, because i don't know about you, but i know that i'd be willing to pay a shit ton for the cure.
Why would you even open up your mouth to say something so negative?!
First of all many people would pay half their paycheck indefinitely for the rest of their lives, many after being cured, if they were given a cure. Secondly, have you heard of the man who recently got rid of the AIDS virus? He was infected with Leukemia as well which qualified him for the trial/treatment. He was given Stem-cells from an adult who had a genetic mutation of being resistant to the AIDS virus. He recently tested negative for AIDS & looks awesome. Just Google him. If we can do that, we can cure Herpes for Christ's sake. Sorry to cuss, but don't start your comment, which actually was an alright one, out with something so downing or depressing as that when people are looking for help. Some people are suicidal from misinformation, so just keep that in mind, ok? Thank you.
If good health is a cost saving measure for the health insurance companies, then I think a cure for herpes would be in their best interest. Take me as an example; I contracted herpes 20 years ago. The virus has left me alone pretty much most of the past year. However, now that I'm older and trying to be healthier by getting regular excercise and working longer hours, the virus has been plaguing me. Every time I have an outbreak, the fatigue takes me down for a couple of days. I think that if I did not have herpes, I could be healthier and more productive. Not to mention that the outbreaks suck!
As someone who has the herpes 2 virus, A. Smith, I find your comment offensive. These drug treatments are not cash cows- they are temporary solutions until we can get funding to learn more by changing the minds of people like you.
I agree with the idea that pharmaceutical companies are making millions on treatments...to cure a disease will put doctors who specialize in that particular disease such as cancer...out of business. I truly believe that there are cures sitting on a shelf that have been bought out by pharmaceutical companies to keep it from curing people.... I believe in the cash cow theory...totally
I think it is time to come up with funding, someone needs to take a stand. This has gone on for toooooo long. And i can't figure out why, there is just this stigma that seems to be funny. But not when it starts to effect children, teens...
thank you. and when is anybody going to step up and do something about the funding. i have all these daydreams about it, but i'm too scared to. but we have all these "find a cure for aids" and "find the cure for cancer" and we even have a month dedicated to breast cancer awareness. well what about us? are we just gross? we're not worth it or what? bull. yes we are. but what do we do? where do we start? society has labeled herpes so that nobody will mention it. but you know about all the famous people who have AIDS. and i get that its not life threatening like AIDS is, but whoever said it's emotionally damaging wasn't lieing. i got "the call" 2 hours before i had to go to work. i couldn't stop crying, or stop thinking about it. and while i may not be crying about it anymore, i still can't stop thinking about it. i feel dirty. i feel like if anybody knew, i wouldn't know anyone. and atleast most of you know where you got it. i don't even know how long i've really had it. just keep faith.
I was married in 09 and had some stress come to my life. Then I had an outbreak not even knowing I had it. My husband has never had an outbreak and we dont use a condom but everytime I have an outbreak I take just three pills of the same thing. I havent had an outbreak in a while and they seem to be brought on by stress. Is there away to help with funding to find a curl and is quick clear just a joke or could it help?
While herpes, genital or oral, is probably not pleasant to have, herpes is not fatal and lots of people infected go on to live normal and healthy lives. I would rather see funding go towards deadly ailments such as pediatric cancers, asthma, AIDS, and so on.
finding a cure for a virus such as herpes could possibly lead to cures for other diseases such as aids which is deadly
Your a heartless human being honestly...I hope you never have to swallow your words. Having something like herpes is devastating and is extremely painful. I bet you wouldn't be saying that if you had herpes.
I have Asthma, Eczema, and HSV-2 (Genital Herpes)....but guess which one I would rather have a cure for?? I'm 20 years old and I contracted this disease one year ago and there is NOTHING on this earth that I would rather have than a CURE. Can you imagine how difficult it is to get in the shower and have your genital area burn like hell fire? NO YOU CAN'T.....It's even more upsetting that people are STILL ignorant about diseases such as Herpes and HIV/AIDS, especially since there are so many people afflicted by them. I pray that more young girls/boys to educate themselves about sex and STD's and to know it CAN happen to them, and after I graduate from school in 2012, I am dedicating my life to helping find funding for the research and development of a CURE for HSV 1 & 2 as well as HIV/AIDS....as more of us should 🙂
Herpes can be deadly when it goes to the brain.
Your so right, but why can't we see funding for all????? You don't see death with people who have it, but I'm sure you are compassionate to children who are abused and how it changes them. Doesn't emotional death mean anything??? Changing who you are as a person and the way you live effects who you are meant to be, should matter. So i would be happy if people realized that not everyone bounces back from this disease, some actually do kill themselves in fear of rejection, or passing it on to the person they love. We need a solution, not an "oh well" they will be lucky enough to live a somewhat decent life.
Hopefully you can contract this horrible and painful disease and maybe you will find a change of heart
I've heard so many negative reactions to this "Kris" person. I searched & found it once I stopped searching. Completely inflammatory comment. Coming from someone on a Herpes Support Forum? How did you get here may I ask? I think someone's in denial. Surely you didn't end up here by chance.. Take those terrible words & shove them. Though I fully expect you were waiting for such a reaction. Please get a life & stop poking people who are or could be suicidal. That's just inhuman. Go somewhere else & be a troll, "Kris".
I know of a couple of people who contracted genital herpes through a guy they were dating, and neither is promiscuous.. it is easy to catch folks. "Viral shedding" is all it takes for someone to spead the virus... there doesnt have to be a sore present. And condoms dont necessarily protect someone from herpes either. I think alot more people have this that are too ashamed and embarrassed to admit it. Alot of guys have mistaken the onset of herpes for 'jock itch' too.. that is true. You can also catch genital herpes through oral sex if your partner has a cold sore or is about to get one-alot of people don't know that. Tiger Woods may have very well been exposed with all of the sleeping around he did. Anne Heche has admitted to catching herpes from being molested when she was a kid. There is a stigma attached to herpes and its about as common as the flu now. For some people frequent outbreaks are a hassle but this is rare; alot of people who have it can go years without an outbreak but I would still like to see a more effective treatment or even a cure.
Well said.
I have HSV-2 and I can most certainly say that I am not in the least promiscuous. The man I contracted this virus from was the same man I lost my virginity to. For those of us who were infected by someone we trusted and cared for, I think a cure is imperative. I've read the above comments and those that say it's a social stigma are correct. I can't begin to count the men I've dated who I've been perfectly frank with regarding my status as a carrier only to receive reactions that are absolutely crushing.
I didn't ask for this disease. I didn't ask to be shunned and looked upon as though I'm a parriah for the rest of the world at large. For those that think there are more important things to consider, I believe your opinion would change if you had to deal with the stigma of herpes.
I appreciate your comment. Very well said.
Wow, well said. It is a stupid stigma.
Well said.
I have the viral herpes. I was 2 months old when I was diagnosed. Someone kissed me when I was a baby. It got to the point where I was hospitalzed with coldsores around my mouth down my throat and into my stomach. I like many did not ask for this disease. I must now watch what I drink, eat, and can not be in the sun for to long. Which is not fun when I am the mother of a 3 year old.
Does your child have it?
How do you prevent any outbreaks from occurring and did you have any problems during and after your pregnancy?
I'm 21 and I was just diagnosed with Genital Herpes... I'm really afraid and I don't know what to do. I really want to start a family and just live a normal life...but I was unfortunate and somehow got this... it just haunts me every night and I'm just so lost. I try to eat a healthy diet and also exercise when I can.. I also know that I'm really prone to stress since I'm in professional grad school and I'm still thinking of ways to avoid stressing myself out and to prevent recurrent outbreaks. So please tell me , how did you deal with it throughout your pregnancy and how did your husband react? Were you still able to live a normal healthy life?
Thank you.
I guess somewhere deep down inside I feel as though I have to hold out hope that one day someone will have a heart in the pharmaceutical/medical industry and rally to find a cure. I, like many, was devastated to learn that the man I trusted gave me this disease about three to four years ago. I think it's hard for others who don't have this disease to walk even a step in our shoes. Yes, I feel AIDS and cancer are more deadly, but one of those cannot be passed on to someone else by intimate contact or even by a simple kiss. I pray they find a cure for AIDS, Cancer, and Herpes. In addition, I don't think 1 out of 5 have herpes. I think the numbers are much higher. A lot of people are embarrassed to admit it, to be seen by a doctor, or may not even know they have it because they are not aware of the cause of their cold sores or itching. It's a scary, debilitating disease. I wouldn't say my life is exactly normal. I mean, you try having the disease and let me know how normal life is for you. I've been alone since I found out because it's embarrassing to have to have that conversation with someone you barely know. Furthermore, when I have had the conversation it's been 100% rejection. I can understand. I didn't ask for this disease either. I honestly wouldn't want to be with someone that had the disease if I was herpes free – especially now, after experiencing this disease first hand.
OMG, I soo feel your pain. I thought I was the only one. Thanks for your words.
Having actually heard from Dr. Cullen at Duke, the news is very promising but it is the same news I heard about a 1 1/2 years ago from emailing his research team. His team at Duke along with another team of researchers at Florida U have found possible cures but run into the same lack of funding problems. Maybe someone should make up a site for donation to their cause, since alot of us have this disease I bet it would do well. I wouldnt mind donating like $100 or more if it means helping me not to have to pay for acyclover and expensive over the counter creams, chapstick and lysine supplements. I'm like most of you also, always fighting the shame of Herpes and I got it when I was 3 or 4 from drinking on my aunts soda. Please find a cure for everything else thats deadly but also cure herpes.
GREAT IDEA!!
Funny you mention donations Phil...
It is because of this drastic need for funding members of herpes-coldsores.com have formed the Herpes Cure Coalition (HCC). We are a grassroots organization with the mission is to aid researchers with funding support who are the closest to a potential Herpes Cure.
Right now we are running a campaign to support Dr. Bloom at the University of Florida. Check us out.
Google Herpes Cure Coalition or follow the link below.

What needs to be done and where are we at?. We need a cure, I do feel this has been sat on for a long while and I'm not sure why, shame maybe. But this is a new time. We need funding now, too many people are being effected and having to live sub pare lives, depression and even killing themselves. Pharma companies are making money which should be going to funding!!!!! I will do whatever it takes, or I what I need to do to make sure innocent peoples lives don't have to be altered by trusting the wrong person.
go head pepe1970 that's exactly how i feel im willing to do whatever it take. because i to trusted thee wrong person
Hi everyone, I agree with what most of you all have said. I was not sleeping around and being reckless when I got herpes. I actually got herpes from my ex-fiance, the woman I was planning on marrying. I trusted her, because I loved her with all of my heart and I wanted to be with her until I died. I was abstanant, I waited to have sex until I was with the woman I was marrying. My ex-fiance slept around on me and got herpes from another man and then she gave herpes to me without telling me she had it. Now I am single and I know that nobody will ever want to date me because of my disease. I don't know why but I am ashamed of myself, I pray to God and I ask him why he allowed this to happen to me, I ask him why I deserved this. I have had 2 outbreaks in the last 2 months and I can honestly say it is horrible. I pray I am cured soon.
that is not true there are a lot of people who have herpes and have relationships if you want to be with someone dont tell them you have it dont sleep with them either but take your time get to know them let then get to know you it's not really anyones business unless your haveing sex with them or have hsv1 and try to kiss hsv 1 has to be told people kiss all the time but hsv 2 your business get to know them abstain when you really trust them then tell cause otherwise you may as well tattoo it on your forehead just saying
I got this sickness from my ex-fiance. Although I asked her about her health status time and again, she lied and I obviously found out the hard way. Now, I am stuck with this disease for the rest of my life.
I got herpes when I was 15. I was so hurt that the person did not tell me they had the virus. I had known him for a long time and he say I was his dream girl and he would wait until forever for me. But he did not wait with everyone else. He was with lot of women, so he got infected then infected me. I was so hurt I cry for years. But I went to doctor who lazered the herpes sites and I DID NOT HAVE another outbreak again in the those spots. Fire or lazering is the answer. It destoryes the nerve endings. But, most doctors today will not do it. So try to talk your doctor to see if he or she agrees with this method.
Chris, you will find someone who will love you and understand about this issue. I have 2 kids and have been in happy marriage for years. And all of this was before the lazer treatment happen. God is not punshing you. He has another person in mind for you stay in prayer. He is preparing you for the right person. You will be blessed
I just went to my local clinic because I had been having strange pain. I've been in a monogamous relationship for 2 years and just now have symptoms. She immediately suggested this after looking at me, I only have one lesion that was hard to see I suppose. I was so shocked, why now? Lots of stress. I have no clue how I got it, but I am extremely lucky to have a boyfriend who is supportive and strong and understanding. This whole experience has been humbling, and my eyes are open wide to the reality of the situation. I never knew it was so prevalent or easily obtained. It truly is more of a social stigma than a medical problem, but I definitely hope they find a cure. They say its not life threatening but I beg to differ, I feel it can lower your immune system and cause someone to be prone to other illnesses which are life threatening. Worse, many people, like me, don't even know they have it for years!
I just found out today my 3 year son have a herpes under his eye.. fore sure he got the virus from his granma... I am so mad at myself and at his granma.. why does this happen to him?....I pray to god that he doesn't lose his eye sight... he is taking some oral medications now called acyclovir.. Now I gotta keep him out of sunlight and wear sunglasses.. i hope his life will not be hard... I am so sad.. I wanna cried
Boa I am in the same situation as you are, my baby has also got the virus in the eyes. how in the world am I going to explain that because of be you got herpes that has no cure. I only pray that the worst doesn't happen. I cry sometimes until I am sick. I often want to die of guilt but it would also kill me to leave my baby alone in the world. I thought I was alone .....God HELP US PLEASE!
I caught herpes when my cousin molested me @ age 13, I thought I could protect the love of my life but I couldnt and I lost him. This has destroyed my life and I pray for a cure everyday.
I contracted herpes from my ex after nearly 20 years of marriage. He had the disease the entire time but after being unfaithful was unable to tell that he was having an outbreak. So during an attempt at reconciliation, I contracted this disease from him. For many years I have been alone and haven't attempted to date. This experience has been devastating and has caused me to feel estranged from God and to keep my distance from others. This is crazy for it to be deemed a low priority for funding.
Don't feel estranged from God. God loves you no matter what. 🙂 Bring your troubles to Him, there's nothing He can't do.
God still loves you. But you have to stay in prayer. You can't see it now but God will bring you help. No know why things happen, but it all in his plan. Read my other blog to Chris Taylor. Seek a doctor the help with lazer. Hang in there.
Hi,
I agree about the funding. I will do my best to get attention from funding parties e.g. state, government, private companies and also newspapers etc, so that they don´t forget about this terrible disease, and that we can have a cure within short. I hope you all will join me in this mission.
yes, please let me know how i can help as well my email is chantell2006@gmail.com

The University of Florida is researching a novel cure that may cause the herpes virus to become inactive in people who already carry the virus. The researchers, led by Dr David Bloom, are accepting donations.
There are two types of herpes simplex virus, HSV-1 and HSV-2. Because they are nearly identical, research into one virus helps research into the other. You can donate to the University of Florida’s HSV-1 research here, and HSV-2 research here. You can read more about the research here.

Luke, thank you for doing the research and providing this information for us.
i contracted this from my boyfriend, the second person i've ever been with sexually. i agree, that as long as you have people and insurance companies shelling out hundreds of dollars a month for a single Valtrex prescription, you are not going to get anyone really interested in finding a cure.
people who think it isn't a big deal don't have it (or don't know they do). it affects you every day, physically, mentally or emotionally.
i've decided to take my health into my own hands and experiment with natural options such as prunella vulgaris, wild oil of oregano and various other things that you won't hear of from allopathic medicine.
i believe there is a cure for every disease out there ... it's a shame that treatment is so much more profitable.
your so right before I knew I had it I wouldnt say I thought it was nothing but I thought it was actually worst then it is for me at least I worry for my daughter she is not yet two (almost) and I think I may have gotten it from her father we were together for five years off and on mostly on but he had a sketchy past and i ended up getting preg. through a condom and i just found out yesterday I pray my daughter doesn't have it I also pray my other children dont get it but i will get married i will have kids i want a big family and have it or not im going to live my life more carefully but im going to live it
Bud Ingle: Cold sores are transmitted through kissing. Usually from the parents, kissing their kids.
this was the most embarrasing moment in my life.when I was diagnosed HSV 1 and HSV 2 . I was ready to die ,I understood immediatley that my life is pretty much over . when you cant kiss anyone even to your close friends ,you cant toch anyone ,you cant contact anyone ,what kind of life is this ? .this is the end of your life
I dont think they will ever find the cure ,it is just talking and discussion .
the reality is that you dont feel yourself part of this life anymore
your life is suffer that you have to take it to the rest of life
Martin, When did you find this out? Your life is certainly not over. Million upon millions of people have this, including me. It's not lethal. You will find that there are plenty of people who will accept you, and even want to have relationships with you. More than you think. I found out over 10 years ago, my life didn't end, and I still had to squirm away from infatuated people who i told hoping to scare them away and it didn't work.
There is plenty of hope. Life goes on, especially if you stop stressing over it, and accept it. You don't have a lot of choices there. It's either be miserable forever, or accept and carry on. Believe me, its worth it to get past your shock, and go on living.
i feel very scared and ashamed. I was recently told I might have Herpes. I have been missing a lot of work and feel very stressed. I don't think I want to say anything to my family. and I don't know what to tell people at work. My life feels ruined. I was wandering if there are any support groups out there. I live in Saskatchewan and there are none.
well said
thank you Bill for supporting me. I do really appreaciate your optimistic views. I found out about 3 weeks ago.The female that I spent the night with ,destroyed my life , took my life from me. She could have told me that she had the disease ,but she purposely was silent and infected me .I just hate the dishonesty.
you know if I was in eraly 50 or 60 ,I would not worry too much ,but since I am 31 and there were still plenty of life out there, but unfortunately not for us Bill. I know it is hard to accept that my bedroom life is gone. But I am ready to accept the consequences of what happened. it is just kind of not easy to tell my parents, who soon or later gonna wonder why I am emotionally and morally stressed
Thank you Bill for backing me up
Martin, your comment is offensive. I am 22 years old and have just been infected two weeks ago. I was a virgin until a year ago, I saved myself until I was twenty-one, I have only been with three people, and within a year of being sexually active have ALREADY been infected. Believe me, there are younger people than me who have this disease. There are children whith herpes and you're complaining about your life being over because you contracted it at 31? Yes,. you're still so young to have a chronic disease and you definantly still have the rest of your life to live, but you should know you're lucky to have at least HAD a sex life. I know what it's like to feel like you want to die and that you want your life to be over because your sexual health is, but you come across as beging ignorant.
How have you even managed, Laura, to see offense in Martin's post? The man is just expressing his pain. You are the one who is ignorant, because you obviously believe that people who are older than you are don't have the right to feel that emotional pain.
I'm with you on this constantia and Martin, I was 29 when I got it, I'm 30 now .. My husband has hsv1 which is the face one. He got it from oral on me when I didn't even have a sore, it's ruined the sex life.
I get it more often then he does, hsv2 (genital area) and get embarrassed to tell him that I have it AGAIN when he tries to touch me 🙁 I go through with it in pain. It's not a normal disease and should be cured.

To Martin and any new members of the club. This is my HSV recipe:
Take lysine daily and twice a day with outbreaks (statistics show it should halve your ob's), ecinacea to boost ur immune system and supplement with vitamines. I went from monthly OB's to bi-yearly. Get your doc to give u large doses of Valtrex/Acyclovir to purge the virus when u have bad outbreaks and lay off sugary foods. Eat plenty of high content l-lysine food (apples/fish/chicken) It will sort itself out, I'm 25 and understand how bad things can be but I have beaten the depression and I'm even stronger, you could have been hit by a car, or lost an arm but you got a skin condition that may be cured soon and the only people who look down on this kind of thing are either ignorant or pathetic (jt can happen to anyone). Keep fit and maybe take up yoga to get your head in check. Worst case 5-htp can aid feeling shit, else hit the prozac.
We may as well call herpes a deadly disease. It causes so much emotional issues, that I sometimes feel that my life is pretty much over and have thought about taking my own life. It has been 4 months since I was diagnosed with both herpes. I have not had an outbreak, but just a week ago, I started to feel some pain on both sides of my hips. I do run 3 to 4 miles 4 days out of the week. I have been running for over 10 years and have always taken care of myself. Now I just learned that this pain on my hips joints maybe related to my problem with herpes. I am about to loose my mind. This has been an outlet for years and I hope to god that this is not another way to break me down. I have turn to god and prayed everyday for some type of miracle. I cry each day and wonder why!!! I have been a good person and I hope to god to please cure me; since there is really no cure out there, according to my doctor. I have been separated from my husband now and dealing with this broken marriage, but this constant worrying does not help me. I understand that stress may cause an outbreak, but how do you not stress over something like this. I do hope for a cure and I am sure that they can find funds just like any other foundation, just like with cancer and aids.
Marrian keep the faith. I know how exactly how you feel. You are not alone.
Hello, it was helpful reading all the post. I am 40 years old and have had the disease fsince I was 24. I dont have a lot of outbreaks but daily my back, buttocks, shoulders, and legs hurt. It is a constant reminder of the mistake I make having unprotected sex. Emotionally it is draining but also physically draining as I am constanting in pain. I am going to donate and hold on until there is a cure. I am prayerful and hopeful. God bless those whose are working towards a solution! You will change the lives of millions of people!
I also deal with the daily pain in my legs and butt, Although I am between outbreaks. Also, I itch daily. A constant reminder of my mistakes. Hard to go forward some days, talk bout one day at a time.
Its not your fault you could have used a condom and still got it it happened shit happens dont blame yourself or the other person because unless they knew its not theirs either
Start spreading the word and write to Obama, get them to dump a billion into STD cures, cause these people are close.
Herpes researchers need funding to continue the development of new drugs and vaccines to combat herpes. Currently there are a few ways to directly fund researchers working on an effective treatment.
Harvard medical school are working on a vaccine. The research is led by Dr David Knipe and his team of scientists at Knipe Lab. To donate to this research, visit the research website here.
Duke University are developing a novel approach that will force the virus out of a latent state and allow it to be killed by existing drugs like acyclovir. This could completely rid a person’s body of the herpes virus. It is the most complete treatment currently being researched. To donate to the Duke project, you have to carefully follow the University’s instructions:
“Two-thirds down the Duke University donations page there is a text box where you can type designation comments. In this box type: Professor Bryan Cullen account 391-1628. All gifts designated for this account must be credited to this account, or they will end up going to another department of the university.”

Herpes can happen to anyone. I was naive. I trusted my ex-boyfriend. The sad thing is that women tend to suffer the most from herpes because of our hormone and biological structure. My ex-boyfriend caught it many years ago without any symptom and knowledge that he had it. He was the one who slept around and didn't tell me about his past. I was the one who was faithful to him but ended up suffering the most – painful outbreaks.
I didn't believe in God that much before. Now I feel so hopeless that I pray to God every night that there is a cure. Even though Herpes is not life-threatening to adults, it has caused so much emotional and physical damages to people and their lives. It is about TIME for the global health organizations to step up and support the herpes cure research by providing the researchers with more fundings. As sufferers or friends or family members of suffers, we should also take action to support the research by donating:
http://www.herpes-coldsores.com/herpes-cure-coalition/index.htm
I was in a monogamous relationship so I thought. My ex knew his ex had herpes for 20 yrs and never told me. She called and told me and I got tested. She told me 2 break us up which worked. He claimed he didn't know the effects it would have.He has slept with so many women and she has as well. She's in law inforcement and harasses me. I take one day at a time!I can't believe this so I took a vow of celibacy. I wouldn't ever give this 2 anyone
I was diagnosed with Herpes 2 weeks ago. It completely has destroyed me. I have been walking in the darkest path of my entire life since then. The doctor said I probably had it for years and didn't know it. My husband of 15 years tested negative.
Is it possible that I had it for that long and never gave it to him?
I am also dealing with the rejection part of this condition. My husband is probably going to leave me becasue I have this. I feel so lonely and so scared of the future. Like many have expressed, the thought of having this condition and knowing you can't kiss anyone much less think of having a close or intimate relationship ever again is horrible.
This was so devastating to me I even thought of suicide for many days. I've had to deal with these news "one day at the time", but, it is not easy. I haven't been able to sleep properly since I found out. When I do finally sleep for a few minutes, I wake up shaking from head to toe.
This might not be a deadly condition, but, it sure is debilitating and extremely harmful (physicologially) to people who have it.
In addition to giving money for research, I'd like to volunteer in their research. I am willing to devote the rest of my life in necessary to finding the cure. I have a science degree with background in Biology. I'm sure with the proper coaching, I can be of assistance. If anyone can guide me on how I can help as a volunteer, I will do it.
Talking about it on blogs has helped some, but, I feel there has to be more I can do to try to get well again.
I've had the oral kind it since I was 16, of course got it from a boy friend. I had bad outbreaks when I was younger, my doctor put me on the anitvirals. My trick is I dont follow the directions. I heavily dose ( 2-3 pills instead of 1) the 1st 12-18 hours then back off to 1. The drugs help it from getting out of hand. They crust over quicly and stop spreading.
The good news is I never gave it to my husband in 20 years. I was very careful not to kiss him (anywhere!!!!) and he has never had symptoms.
It think its a matter of just be careful with any kind of contact with others especialy if your stressed (trigger) or know your other triggers (raw pineapple, for me) .
For dating, there are others out there like us and they do understand.. I know of married couples who have it, had it before marriage, they work it out and have a fine sex life.
if your husband leaves you for that he never loved you and sorry to say but you dont need him it will be hard but life goes on dont give up
In the past, people were silent sufferers of herpes. They couldn't tell anyone but suffered the pain and stagma in secret. It might explain why Herpes cure research was never put as a critical research to be funded with.
NOW we can make a DIFFERENCE. We can vocalize our needs for a cure through our actions, which include donations and support. I just made a promise to myself that I will do whatever it takes to support the cure effort for the rest of my life. Hopefully, there will be a cure in my lifetime if not anytime soon.
We also need to let the researchers know how much we appreciate their work. Their findings and discovery to a cure is worth more than billion dollars or anything that money can be measured. It is the quality of life and the freedom that we don't need to rely on the pharmaceutical drugs forever in order to live a 'normal' life.
Here is a list of current herpes cure and vaccine research (let's hope one of them will lead to a cure):
http://www.herpes-coldsores.com/messageforum/showthread.php?t=22202
To Sandy, I know how you feel. I had a good friend who went with me when I find out. She supported me and has been there since day one. If I didn't have her there in the office I'm not sure how I would have made it. But we all need someone we can confide/talk to without them being judgemental towards our situation. I wish you best for you and your husband.
I was diagnosed in Oct '09 and the fact of having this disease has changed my life forever. I have no children and some day I want to experience this. However, this situation has interrupted my life but I'm trusting that their will be a cure soon. I take pills on a daily basis and there are days where I just want to flush them down the drain because I'm tired of taking these pills. I don't wish this situation on anyone.
The first month is the worst!
I had two outbreaks the first month and probably four more since then (I was diagnosed in July 09') but with the Valtrex is was no big deal. Yes, there was physical discomfort, but that was nothing compared to the psychological trauma. Funny thing is the psychological trauma lessened very quickly once I became educated about herpes.
No doubt it is a serious condition, but it hasn't changed my life all that much. It hasn't changed my ability to set goals for myself, to enjoy the people who love me, nor to laugh and be social. The way I look at it, their are a variety of ailments that people wake up with everyday – whether it be cancer, multiple sclerosis, luekemia and even mental illness. (Just ask the soldiers coming home from the war.) Herpes sucks...but it treatable!
I remember my PA telling me I had Herpes...but I can describe to a perfect "T" what was in my doctors office the day he told me I had cancer. WHOA! That was an eye opener! Fortunately, everything has worked out, and I believe that I will move forward in my life with this agrivating virus. My biggest concern with having this virus is that I do not infect anyone else – I think I can handle that!
The disease affects everybody differently though, Pete. I, for example, am not able to find relief from anything. Acyclovyr doesn' work for me. Neither does Lysine. Nor healthy diet and exercise. My last outbreak started 7 months ago and hasn't stopped since then. Yes, I've had it for the past 7 months 24/7 non-stop. All I can do is use at all times anti-itch creams to reduce the pain and itching a little bit. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I am in constant pain. It's like lifetime torture for me. I can't sleep well because I'm in pain. I wish I had yearly or even monthly outbreaks – as long as I had some breaks from them in between. My outbreak doesn't stop even for a day. Not for an hour. It never stops. I hope at least I can make you, guys, feel better about your condition. Whenever you feel sad, just think about me and you will feel better, because you are much better off than me with your bi-yearly/bi-montly outbreaks. May God bless us all and help us find the cure, or at least the treatment that works for everyone.
I need to talk to someone about a discovery I have made. Dr. I may have the anwser you are looking for. At least the people that were willing to try it has been outbreak free since they have tried my drug. This is not a joke and the hope I have to offer only cost about three to four dollars for a years surply. So if anyone is at least curious contact me at my email.
What exactly do you know that will help?

I relate to you all. When I was 23 a guy I had sex with gave me herpes. He did not tell me he had it. And he ruined my life. I was afraid to date as I thought I would be rejected once I told them I had it. Also, I did not know how to deal with that discussion without feeling like a total looser. I was not promiscuous and was not even aware of diseases back then. I pray to God all the time about it. I don't understand why I had to get the diesease. I truly believe it prevented me from getting married and having children. I am now in my 50s and still pray to God about it. I have made the best of my life in every other area. But I had a beautiful figure and let that go because of the depression and thought I would never get married. I now eat better and constantly strive to get the weight off. Going to the gym over years has helped, and the disease has not prevented me from working out for hours. I guess the thing is to hope and pray for a cure and don't let it ruin your life. I don't understand why this is not a priority in society for scientists to find a cure. It can happen to anyone since no one seems to have a conscience about telling anyone they have it. I would never sleep with someone without telling them about it. I guess since 1 in 5 have it now we have a chance of meeting someone with the disease who understands.
Herpes can happen to anyone. I was in love dating a man that worked at a hospital and gave instructions to his patients on safe sex. We were talking marriage. He promised he did not have any diseases and since he worked at the local community hospital I thought this made him even more credible. College educated, graduated top of his class, worked in healthcare. I have no doubt in my mind he 100% knowingly gave me the disease. He was my first and only partner so I know where it came from in my case . My college was doing a study on Herpes and Hep C vaccines so they had all of the testing equipment available. I had never had so much as a yeast infection before and I went in thinking I had a yeast infection and took a blood test and found out it was Herpes. I could never trust him I just went completely numb.
I later found out he was dating nurses at the hospital. He even had a baby after we broke up with a nurse at the hospital. He was sleeping around with women unprotected knowing he knew he had a STD. The sad thing is I am not the only one who is victimized by people like this and nothing is done. I hope that people not infected get the vaccine and they find a cure for those who already have it.
They make so much money off of the people that have it. I am hopeful for a cure. They cured Herpes in mice at Harvard now when will they get around to helping us people out because nobody deserves this disease.
Fresno, I am all with you. No one deserves this disease! Except for promiscuous bastards like your ex. Unfortunately promiscuous people can't suffer the consequences of their actions without hurting and infecting innocent people like you and I. I am 22 and was infected two weeks ago by my faithful partner who did not know he was infected. I have only been sexually active for a year. I have not been promiscuous and I tried so hard to save myself for marriage and I don't feel like people like me deserve to get sick but it happens all the time everyday all over the world. But I guess having sex period will get you sick whether you do it just once or a thousand times. I'm sorry for all of us, all I want is for society to embrace this issue like we do AIDS and HIV
what are the other sources of infection of this virus. i haven't slept wit anyone. but i still have this. i have oral. i also have this reoccurring itching problem in the genital area. can any one throw some light on this?
Ya go see a doctor. You may have touched your mouth and transmitted it to other places. It's common.
as many other have commented here, BUT on many many other forums, the COMMERCIAL interests to develop a cure is near to nill, the companies KNOWS they will lose a cash cow.
I can tell I don't spend a single cent on the remedies out there to soothing the pain, I am simply not supporting that, but if a one-time vaccine would appear I would be willing to spend US$ xxx.
I know that so many think that just because this disease isn't fatal then funding should go to something else. I would love to see people running triatholons or doing fund raising for this. We can openly do that for AIDS but Herpes instead gets made fun of on movies and TV shows and is looked at JUST as badly as AIDS. It may not kill but it destroys confidence, makes you feel like you have to hide, and can create problems for you if you are like me and already have an underlying immune problem. It's embarrassing and painful and just because it doesn't kill me doesn't mean I don't deserve to have research done for a cure. I am one of those above who got it from someone I TRUSTED, someone I had been with for 5 years. And what do I do...refrain from sex the rest of my life? I know there are people accepting and patient with this but it creates such anxiety for me when I have to tell someone. So when it comes to funding...what do you do? But the government needs to look at the numbers. It's closer to 1 in 4 now. Almost 80% of people have type 1...they may not experience many side effects though so they don't even know they are spreading it. I'm even at the point now that if we could just get a vaccine I will keep this for life as long as I know I won't pass it on.
Ive known for about a year now that i have hsv2 i wasn't what you would call promiscuous, but after being in a relationship for 6 years (where i was the only faithful party) i decided to "have fun". The man i was in the relationship with was my first so I had never been with anyone else. A few years later i met guy and we began dating, he assured me he had been tested n was clean eventually we became intimate, for the most part i used protection except for a couple of slip ups. I've Always been very health conscious (especially with stds) so when i felt that first tingle i already suspected its was herpes. Sure enough it was that. Its been a year and i still cry at least 3 times a week im almost always online researching info on it I've told a few family members and they just tell me its not the end of the world but they really have no idea how i feel. Im 26 years old and i can't bring myself to ever tell anyone i feel like ill be alone forever because i don't want anyone to feel how i do. On top of all the emotions i go through my o/bs are very frequent and very painful and i can't afford the Mediation. What do i do now??
Heres a wake-up call for everyone. AIDS DOES NOT KIILL PEOPLE! AIDS pretty much disables your immune system over time. IT DOES NOT KILL PEOPLE! IT HAS NEVER KILLED ANYONE EVER! IT CANT! It is the cold, or the flu, or the other illness you become infected with while having AIDS that KILLS YOU! So there we all go, everyone out there who is saying Herpes doesn't deserve a cure because there are diseases like AIDS that are killing people : WAKE UP! AIDS isnt killing anyone! It's the colds or flus etc that AIDS patients contract that kills them. So, how many people out there have wrote about wanting to commite suicide because of having herpes? If you haven't wrote it, have you thought it or spoken it? I know I have, how many people out there actually do it? We don't know, but it could be that Herpes is just as much of a killer as AIDS is, AIDS doesn't cause death the cold or flu does, herpes doesn't cause death but the depression might. Just food for thought- everyone should think abou this.
I have very good health insurance coverage so for me taking valtrex as daily suppressive won't cost me much money. However, I seriously don't know how others can take this antiviral medicine every day for years. I tried to take it just for a few weeks. I developed severe side effects such as back pain, hair loss, stomach pain, diarrhea....and I am always healthy and have never had any allergic response to medicine in my whole life. Those medicines are so bad to the body even though they can prevent outbreak or reduce severity of the virus.
I really really HOPE that there is a CURE soon. Based on the buzz online, it does seem that a cure might be coming soon. Now the whole world is counting on the U.S. to develop a cure. And all of us in the U.S. are counting on a few scientists here like Dr. Bloom, Dr. Cullen, and Dr. Knipe to make history.
If the health associations don't think Herpes is a critical illness to be funded with, we, Herpes suffers, shouldn't just sit here doing nothing and trying to deal with the illness for the rest of our life. ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS.
Let's support the Herpes cure research because we will be the ultimate beneficiaries of the discovery and our new generations will be too.
