Join Dr. Gupta's 'Four Months to Fitness' initiative!

Today, I am starting something I have wanted to do for a very long time.
Using this blog and my @SanjayGuptaCNN twitter account, I am going to try to harness some of the best practices people employ every day to stay in the best shape of their lives.
Truth is, there are hundreds of sites like this, so I want to make this one different. First of all, I am hoping it becomes a living, breathing forum that users, like you, use to share your best health and fitness tips. I learn new things every day from CNN bloggers and Tweeters. You all are a great resource of information.
I am also going to call on my friends and others I find inspiring to help as well.
For example, @JoePerez helped create something called the Daily Plate, which partners with the non-profit cancer foundation LIVESTRONG, where I sit on the board of directors. After surveying lots of different ways of tracking diets, I think this is one of the best. I will introduce you to Joe and the Web site.
There are also sites out there that will start to help you heart rate train. After doing lots of research, I believe this is one of the most effective and efficient ways of training. Ironically, my friends who listened to this recommendation from me say they work out less intensely and still increase their fitness more than before.
Speaking of LIVESTRONG, I hope to get my pal @LanceArmstrong to weigh in. Admittedly, he is a professional athlete who will be pretty busy training for a big race in July. After that, though, I hope he will share with you some of the great tips he has given me over the years.
Also well-known trainer, and friend of mine, @JillianMichaels who can provide logical, useful suggestions that can be applied to lots of different situations. I also hope to get tips from @RichRoll. We have met only via twitter, but he is living proof that you can go from being a 38-year-old who hardly ever works out to someone who is in fantastic shape, an ultraman in fact, and is biologically younger than he was 10 years ago.
Most of all, this will be a four-month forum dedicated to getting people in terrific shape.
While smaller waists and less weight are things that will inevitably occur as you start incorporating these tips into your life, the real goal is a longer, more functional and exceptional life – free of disease and dysfunction.
I am a neurosurgeon and a reporter for CNN, who has three kids. I have a fairly active travel schedule. I tell you all that, because, like most people, I am busy. Yet, it can still be done.
So join me right here and on my Twitter page. Also, let's keep track of each other’s tips under the hashtag #1023 - which just so happens to be the date of a very big birthday for me.
Four months from now, I hope, we can all celebrate what we have done for our bodies and for our health.

I am SOOOO wanting to do this, I am a 42 yr old female, I live in Wisconsin, I did do some runs this summer, but have lost the drive with winter coming, I do live an active lifestyle, mostly horseback riding and running, However I would love this challenge, I have a personal goal to get into the best physical shape I have ever been in and I would love to use this triatholan as a motivator.
I am also changing my diet to mostly raw foods..... I did this about 10 yrs ago for 4 yrs, best i ever felt... im excited..
Ran 4 miles yesterday.... it was work!! Going to run again today.

I am a two time ovarian 4 cancer survivor. Since my initial diagnoisis at age 53 I have put on 40 lbs, in Sept of 2003. It's a year since my last round of chemo, and am currently in remission once again, Praise God !, however, I feel as if I went from feeling 35 to 75, I want to get back in shape, and loose the weight. My energy level is still very low, Looking forward to the tips and support. scans are clear, blood work excellant, I am ready !
I would like to be considered to train for the marathon. My doctor says that I am border line diabetic. I am scared to death. When you see me you think that I am a specimen of perfect health, but underneath is someone that is gradually losing it and out of control. Coming from a high six figure income to zero income, the alternative is to give up. But I want to tell the world that you can come back inspite of adversities. Keep your faith and keep keeping on with full force.
Does this four month challenge still going for now. It's 5 days before the 2K10 year begins. I would like to be in better health in four months.
I don't park at the computer, but I am willing to give a small amount of time on it if I need to.
Last winter my doctor put me on meds for high triglycerides. I was the poor slob with metabolic syndrome. I started this year with a 5 mile bike ride. Then I did a 30 mile Tour de Cure to raise money for diabetes. That led to the MS150 and then two century rides in the fall. One was the New England Parkinsons Ride and the other was the first annual Patrick Dempsey Challenge. Now I only take meds for type 2 diabetes. No more med for depression, high blood pressure and fats. I have lost 15 lbs and want to keep going about another 30.
If I can do it, you can do it too. Keep up the good work.

While an exercise regimen (cardio,weight training,stretching) and diet regimen (including water intake) are important to keep fit,lose weight etc,we must remember that what ever we adopt must be sustainable in the long run.There is no point in losing weight drastically and regaining it again,which is often the story.Hence the regimen adopted must be customized to oneself- one's lifestyle,body,routine and we must be able to adopt it for life.
Plus besides above 2 aspects following are important:-
1. Adequate rest and sleep.
2. Good posture while sitting,walking.
3. Ensure sofas,chairs,mattresses etc help maintain the above postures.
4. Eating food while sitting at the table only and not doing any other activity (like watching TV etc) at the same time.
5. Reduce stress (mental) in your life by adopting a simpler lifestyle,do deep breathing,easy to do yoga postures,adopt a positive attitude.
TO DO ALL THE ABOVE NEEDS DISCIPLINE (VIZ ATTITUDE) & MOTIVATION.

I am 48 yrs old,try and adopt all of the above for the past 35 plus years and am reasonably fit.This enables me to run a few miles or play a hard game of tennis singles over a couple of hours with fit youngsters who are in their 20s or early 30s. I have no problem with controlling weight and am only trying to gain muscle.
