Head trauma is nothing to be taken lightlyBy Val Willingham The death of actress Natasha Richardson is tragic. A beautiful, vital 45-year-old goes for a ski lesson and falls. She gets up, declines medical care and goes back to her hotel. From there, the story takes a terrible turn. She becomes ill, and is transported to one hospital, then another and then finally to a third hospital near her home, where she dies two days later from brain injuries caused by an epidural hematoma. Her family, friends and fans are shocked. How can something as innocent as a ski fall kill you? Because, neurologists say, the brain, although complex, is a delicate organ. It's very vulnerable and it needs to be taken seriously. And even a bump on the head can take its toll. Unfortunately, I know this all too well. Thirteen years ago, my husband, daughter and I were in a terrible car accident on the Florida Turnpike. On our way to Orlando, our vehicle was hit by a driver who had fallen asleep at the wheel. Although we all had our seat belts on, our car swerved and hit a bridge embankment. My husband's head went out the side window, hitting the windshield and the concrete. When EMS workers got to us, it looked as if a battle had taken place: burning cars, debris. And because my husband had a major slice to his head, blood was everywhere. I was not hurt, and my daughter had a minor cut from flying glass. They loaded us into ambulances and took us to two different hospitals, my husband headed for the local trauma unit. He stayed two days in the hospital. They stitched up his forehead and sent him home, mentioning that he may want to see his doctor once he got back to Washington, D.C. And although the whole thing was terribly traumatic, we left Florida three days later, with my husband behind the wheel of a rental car. Because he felt fine and there seemed to be no urgency to his injuries, my husband went back to work and made an appointment with his doctor to have a CT scan two months later. When he got off the table, the radiologist asked him to sit down and immediately called a neurologist. As the doctor viewed the images, his face turned pale and he asked my husband how long had it been since he was in the accident. My hubby shrugged and said, "A couple of months." The physician then told him not to move - he was going to schedule surgery immediately. It seemed my husband had developed a subdural hematoma that covered his entire brain. According to MayoClinic.com it's usually formed from head trauma that causes the brain to be shaken severely. Many children who suffer from shaken baby syndrome have these type of injuries. And unlike epidural hematomas, which bleed in the brain fairly quickly, my husband's injury developed slowly, causing a massive bruise to form. One false move could have given him a stroke, or caused permanent brain damage. Although my husband made it through brain surgery without incident, there is a lesson here. Never take a head injury for granted. When doctors looked at his scans in the ER in Florida, they obviously did not see the bruising that later formed over his brain. Because the brain is loaded with large and small blood vessels, head injuries can cause all sorts of serious problems. Studies have shown that athletes who suffer even minor concussions can develop neurological problems later in life. The brain is nothing to be messed with. Ironically, March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. And although brain injuries are not as common as, say, broken bones, they do happen and many have serious consequences. They need to be treated immediately. In this story, my husband got treated, before suffering brain damage. He was fortunate. God bless her, but Ms. Richardson was not. I fell back off of a step stool and hit my left lower skull on the half inch thick glass edge of the hood cover over the cooktop. It happen on Friday and now it is Sunday afternoon. My Dad fell off a ladder at work 2 weeks ago. He suffered major head trauma and is fighting his way back. He was found unconscious and air lifted to the nearest hospital. He was heavily sedated for several days while the doctors watched his brain thru MRIs and CTs. While he is making leaps and bounds beyond all the Drs beliefs, my Dad still has a very long road ahead of him. The Drs say he suffered a stroke from the impact of his head hitting the floor. Originally he wasn't able to move his entire left side. And now to everyone's amazement my Dad is walking around! He fractured the front of his skull from temple to temple and broke the bone under his eye. The swelling and bruising almost made him unrecognizable. As the swelling is starting to accept defeat and retreat the Drs have decided not to do reconstructive surgery on the broken bone below his eye. Now that my Dad is responsive and able to communicate he was able to tell the Drs where he hurt. Two broken wrists and two broken ribs added to the list.
I write this blog with a huge question in mind. From this head trauma my Dad can not see out of his left eye and can barely make shadows out of his right eye. The Drs say that his eyes were not damaged but the part of the brain that controls how we see was damaged. No one knows if he will ever be able to see again. My Dad has surprised everyone so far with how quickly he is recovering in other areas. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced vision loss from head trauma? If it is permanent, has anyone ever heard of surgery that can fix the damaged part of the brain?
My office staff one day before he beat in my head back side down area by his hand two times little strongly. Will it make any problem. ?

I wish the San Diego Police knew how important head injuries are. I was beaten,kicked in my head and my husband also shook my head as he tried grabbing me off the ground by it, he shook it so hard it rattled my brain , however the San Diego Police threw me up against a wall and threatened me with jail.... having tbi is hard enough but to know it wasnt and isnt taken serious by the entire city of San Diego hurts just as well. I never deserved this brain injury and hope the Police will take black eyes, fingerprints around someones neck and various other bruises serious.

Tuesday (4/19/2016) the day after Houston got flooded, after getting home from Walmart I was taking the bags in the neighbors house and when I was going back outside to get more bags, I stepped outside on the carpet there was a regular small carpet then another one underneath as I stepped I was trying to grab a hold on the wall, the carpet went flying forward under me and I fell all the way back hit my head hard on the cement it was loud I went home my son went to buy me some ice to put on my head so it wouldn't get swollen I know Jesus saved me!!!
I took a sleeping pill on a Friday night and went to bed. I must have gotten back up to eat and fell in the kitchen.I only came to myself on Monday to find my brother in the house with me. I didn't realize what I had done or was doing. I had many injuries all over from falling many times over and over. I had a large bump on my head and had no balance. My vision was bad and was also seeing things that was not there. I didn't really hurt until about Tuesday. Wednesday morning I starting hurting all over. I called an ambulance and went to the hospital. The doctor ran an MRI and told me I had a large mass on my brain. I didn't agree with him and told him I was fine til I fell all over the house and broke many things including my wrist. I was very confused and my vision was bad. All those symptoms had improved except the broke wrist and the knot on my head. He took me to surgery the next day and I had a brain bleed from the fall. I hadn't realized how bad I was hurt until after the surgery. It has been 6 months since the brain surgery and l am almost back to normal except a little slower in doing things. I used to do everything really fast and now I can't do anything fast anymore. My brain can think fast but my body does not operate correctly if I try to do things as fast as I used to. My coordination is ok as long as I move slower. I didn't use to have to think as I did things like washing dishes. If I turn my head as I reach for something my hand will go somewhere else. l have a small amt of short term memory loss.I didn't know how smart I was until I lost some of it. I am lucky to be alive I guess. The surgeon saved my life and I think he did very well on the surgery. I know I could have came out of it much worse. I am continuing to improve.I hope I get back 100% but I won't know until the improving stops. I am 59 years old so I don't know how much is age and how much is brain injury.
Hello in August on the 11th at 4 PM in 2008 after a final I was struck by a car on my bike. I went through the windshield blew out all airbags. When the 92 year old retired attorney got done going over my bike I was thrown like a rag doll to the concrete. Landed face forward into the street behind me. Landed on my right side hard enough to smash my right wrist to bits. Cracked a scapula had glass and rocks in my hairline.
I can't pass higher math. I had just returned to college to get my BA.I was at the junior college trying to get two AA's I was there three years transfered into Luther College with 92 credit hours. Was at Luther College four years failed out this Spring. I took Statistics over and over guess they got great fun out of watching me fail. I hate people who think telling me I can do it when they couldn't and never bounced of a road. No catscan was done?
Hi, I a 61 years old with viteman B12 defficiency issues. I jogged up the outside stairs to my flat on Friday 27 th May 2016 and I stubbed my booted toe on the top step. I lost my balance and fell backwards down 15 concrete steps. The ambulance was called but apart from having 5 egg shaped bumps on my head and very bruised and battered body. Nothing was broken. So I have taken to my bed for the 2nd day now and get very dizzy when I get up or turn over in the bed. the head is of course sore but will this pass of should I go and have xrays?.

I suffered a head injury at work 24 years ago depressive and anxiety symptoms have appeared to flow into my personal life so much that I have lost familial and social relationships. My employment has been eliminated claiming non work related and I have suffered from mental problems since childhood according to my former employer and a trespass order has been imposed on me preventing me from entering city property. Moved out of City limits. Some of the issues that arose from the injury include depression and anxiety, chronic pain, cognitive, memory and recall, attention, organizational skills, sleep dysfunction, vertebra basilar ischemia, visual changes and behavioral problems. Funny I was told everything will be fine it was only a miner bump on the head when I was struck by a malfunctioned wheel chair ramp compensation has been denied by the Ontario government agency WSIB work place safety and insurance board. I retired with a reduced pension I contributed to and Canada disability pension oh all because of a minor injury as I was told 24 years ago.
I have fallen from a camper step one more step to the groin and must of been more wet then I thought. When I step down my both feet went out under me. When I fell slammed myself into the ground, broke my wrist. I don't remember if I hit my head or not. Since then I do Have problems fallen into. I have had couple of other injuys, I have had since neuropathy in both feet and very painful I also have drop foot in left foot which has crippled me to walk abnormally. Yes I have had cat scans, mrs, docs thought stroke, no sign of stokes or head injurys or anything else. I have been treated by several doctors and chiropractors,and a licensed nutritionist, Which I feel has helped me the most , I got worn down so bad, it effected my liver, kidneys and my nerve system, I am on many different types of supplements to bring me back. I still have a little bit of dizziness yet, but I feel so much better. I do say it has caused behavior problems. I forgot to mentioned B 12, vitiam D were important to bring me back as far as I can be. It as effected my heart lungs due more to the foot drop problem. Would you believe no doctor has yet help me to see if therapy could help. I want to thank Boiness for treatment of my Dropfoot issue . I been wanting to try these treatments. I would like to save my relationship with my love of life,but to late.
I fell 15 ft onto concrete 3 yrs ago still have pain thru whole left side oc my body, severe headaches, something feels lodged under my left shouldeblade definitely in pain. All i can get a Dr to do is MRI of my back with no results, although im still in pain, for some reason they wont do a CT scan, say cant find anything but yet continue to feed me addictive pain meds. Can someone tell me what i have to do to be taken seriously and get the proper medical treatment. I do believe there is multiple things wrong. Help please.
About 6yrs ago, I fell off my horse and was unconcious for awhile but not sure how long and was confused. Had CT scan and showed a subdural hematoma. To this day that place where I hit my head is still sore when I feel of it. Why would it be sore this long. This July 2016.

Earlier I went to sit down in a chair on my porch not seeing that it was hanging off some I sat down and immediately started falling back my head slammed on the ground it took me a little bit to get up and when I did I was dizzy and my stomach rolled 4 hours later I'm having pain behind my right eye and on the top of my head and a lot of tension in my shoulders what I want is how to get a doctor to take my seriously and actually try to find out if something is wrong ps my insurance just got cancelled 2 days ago
Sadly my mother had a fall 2 weeks ago and hit her head and was in a coma for 2 days before she died.
What is so sad is that Barnet Hospital took 6 hours to do a scan of course by then it's far too late to give her treatment.
If I had more knowledge I would have nagged them to do a scan immediately.
The worst thing about it that no care was taken whist she was in hospital incomputant nurses offor the boat who in front of me moved my mum's head so quickly when ajusting the pillow I can't imagine what they did when I wasn't in the room.

I had a fall some months ago. I fell off a high stool-about 3.5 -4 ft off the floor. I still have a bump on the left side of my forehead. Should I be concerned?
I fell about a week ago, about 4am in the morning. I went to go to the bathroom when both feet slipped on something slippery. I hit my forehead on porcelain sink. When I came to, I looked in mirror in horror. The Bridge of my nose was about 3 inches wild with a goose egg above that and my eyes turning black purple. I went to emergency with a very bad headache and facial pain. They did an CAT scan and just sent me home. I'm having a lot of dizzy spells and bad headaches. My eyes are black and forehead still pretty swollen. Im hoping that I don't need any further dr. care but now reading up on this stuff, I'm king of scared. What should I do to make sure I don't develop anything worse. Dr. Never said anything not even to follow up with a regular doctor.

I fall at least once a month. I usually hit my head. I fell two weeks ago. I fell full force onto the porch, eyebrow first. I went to the ER. They took X-Rays, told me that I had a contusion, and sent me home.
I have been dizzy ever since. My eyebrow bump is still there. So are the bruises on my face. They go from my eyebrow to my mouth. I went to drive, had not turned the car on, and I felt like I was going backwards in the car. That was two weeks ago.
I was rushing today. I fell over a little step and slammed onto my right side, hitting my head hard against the metal door. I again was taken to the ER. I felt (and continue to feel) really messed up. My ankle went from being in pain to feeling electrically numb. My recent rotator cuff operation hurts. The EMT's ignored me when I told them that my shoulder hurt and pulled me up by my shoulder. I told them at the ER that may shoulder hurt. They yanked my arm up, then acted as if I was a whiner when I yelled in pain. The techs took X-Rays, told me that I have a contusion and sent me home.
I am in a lot of pain. My chest aches. I have lost my depth perception. I started drooling on myself. My neck keeps cracking. I have a large welt on my crown. My face hurts on both sides now...matching bumps.
Is this appropriate treatment? They do a CT scan. They just look to see if I have broken bones.
I was in a severe car accident in 2014 . I had severe head trauma three fractures in the front of my upper right for head 16 fractures in the lower part of my slull. And I fractured my see one on the left and right side . Three months later the doctors told me it had shifted to the right and was not healed at all . Is now the end of 2016 and I still am having problems. I am having problems with short-term memory loss . And a severe amount of cranial nerve pain. I feel as if my brain has a lot of water on it . I cannot focus and my judgment is completely off . I've been in several car accidents cents due to the fact that I cannot judge distance correctly . I constantly feel pulsating feeling in my head . A few months ago I had a CAT scan done because I slipped and fell and hit the back of my head pretty hard causing a big contusion . They said everything looked fine although they also said they had a direct finding that they thought I had dead brain cells on my brain . I would like to know if you could forward me to a doctor that maybe could take a look and do some more test to find out what's wrong . I was in a rear end crash about a year ago that slammed my car into the truck in front of me. The fire department men that came to the wreck tried to get me to go to the hospital. B it at that time I had a headache that would not stop and my dog that had been out cold that I was worried about. At this time I desided to go home and take care of my dog. I thought my head would get better.
After about two days my head did feel better but my back started giving me trouble and I started having a really hard time with my temper and a great personality change. my husband said he did not know who I was any more. I would scream at him for no reason and he could do nothing right.
It got realy bad a few days later and I got really scared that I was going mental and needed a Dr. right away.
I had my husband drive me to the Dr. but they could not see me so I had him take me to the nearest Dr. care. was given med. that would help with my back and an antidepresent.
I could,not sleep was very afraid I would go off the deep end and desided that I needed immediate help. Went to a mental help group for four weeks 8:00 till 3:30 each day except Sunday's. the after car is a phycharist and a physocolighist. it has been determined that I had a concussion. I am now on Mede and still seeing my phycharist. Do no know when things will be over.

Back in March 1993 that was 24 Year's ago. I was in a Very, Very Bad car Wreck. I was Hit Head – on @ Other Driver was Charged @ It Ripped my Seat belt apart. I was in "Coma" yes a "Coma" 27 Day's. Was in 2 – Different Hospital OVER 10 month's. I can NOT remember very much at all 3 – 4 month's BEFORE & 6 – 7 month's after me bad Car Wreck. The Doctor's & Nurse's told me it was good not being able to remember that time in my Life. I've been living by myself alone since March 1995 that I own.
in 98 i had an industrial accident i was 30 ft up in singleman genie lift. when i hit down button it broke at bottom and slamed me to the cement convention center it bounced several times i was insid the basket it too my ey jaw check broken was massive amount of blood on floor. was treated LIKE DIRT by parametics and the hospital who refused to let me have hair washed of blood put all the intruments and phone and tv on the worst broken side of body. 17 yrs they said i donno ur lucky to be alive and you need never to b alone your friends and family members will have to care for you. No one understands why im not over it. i threw up so much blood i dont een know if i had a transfusion. i know ppl with medicare that get home care ppl. im 5 inches shorter too not normal at all. this was so severe i cant smell or tastse neever wired my jaw so eating a prob was a pro singer but have eshopagus spasm and am prone to siezers from stress. I have insomnia and narcolepsy PTSD and nerve damage. total body slam in a one ton machine at a high velocity and they called it a slip and fall or say I FELL OFF of something It has been one lonely depressing life and of course since they all took pain pills away and are trying to take alprazolam away im scared i will just end it all. no drs no family even get it this at all. they just let me live alone to fall down my stairs and deal with it. nice huh.

I am experiencing something similiar but its different. I received a couple of blows to the back of my head from my kids father for a couple years. I have never gone to a doctor to get checked. Im scared of bad news. This last time he put hands on me he hit me really hard on the back of my head again (occipital bone) and for first time on back of my neck. Awhile there he was sitting on bench in doctor office he got down feeling dizzy end it falling down hitting his head hard on the wall his head made a hole on the wall. The doctor I guess in shock instead of 911 she called nurses wrong proprocedure put my father in a wheelchair tied him wit his scarf rush him to next building which is ER to make to story short my father went into a coma they had machine breathing for him his head bleeding inside of brain his heart stop they revive him couple hour later he started thowing clear water from mouth move his arm up then he put them down the machine stated beeping nures rush in called doctor his heart stop again 1hour later died. I believe if they would of called 911 my dad would been alive still mal practice I dont know but because he was old like the ER Doctor said sorry for your lost if he would of been young man he would be here but since my dad old they didnt give a f@&k sorry for my bad French it is what it is. Thank you
I just had the mall parking barrier drop on the crown of my head. I checked the barrier arm it weighs 15 kilos . I have a bump on the head but no other signs. I read all the possible symptoms and started feeling them but then I told myself that they are unreal and due to my reading. If I do not write again it means I am some feet underground.
I was running with my shepherd today when I fell and landed backwards smacked my head into the ground lost all balance and ability to walk straight it hurt so bad . but its been a few hours. I didn't seek medical.
I would like some feedback on menopause an like I said above.
Also I don't have a sex drive. I've talked to every doctor I've been around. Please help it's destroying our home life

I was in a rear end accident then hit car in front on December 9th/16. As my head went back in could feel the metal frame of my headrest clearly. It felt like there was very little padding. My head has dents where I was hit with the metal bars. Part of my head at the back has been flattened. Never mind the headaches, shooting pains. I still can't rest my head against anything. I went to hospital, told I had concussion but no x rays or scans. I went back to doctors because of dizzy, bad vision and headaches , sore neck. I was getting really worried. But he only requested x-ray of my neck that was over a week ago. I won't get results till next week. I was hoping he would have a scan done.

I met a car accident in december 29,2015. difinitely, its been more than a year now. I went to the best hospitals and doctors in my country. but until now, I still cannot get my good balance when I accidentally bumped into humps in the road. I sometimes felt dizzy while walking in a busy street. I also felt easily confused of ways and I dont easily recognize people whom I have known foe so long. I also dont see clearly my surroundings specially when its twilight. what happen to my vision and memory?
I was hit hard on the side of the head by a foul ball last week at spring training. I was taken to the medic center and my vitals were checked out, and I had no signs of a concussion. I don't think I or anyone in my life took it seriously enough. I am on warfarin for Afib and am now worried that I may have some sort of subdural or brain bleed, but I have no symptoms but a diffuse headache of extremely low grade. I'm writing to warn people about how dangerous being a spectator at baseball games can be. It took less than two seconds for the ball to hit me at high velocity, and I didn't have time to react adequately. If I go to any more games I will only sit behind home plate in the area with netting.
