Cancer warning labels on products: A cause for concern?
For several months I have enjoyed recording digital music files through my keyboard, thanks to a simple device that connects it to my laptop. But it wasn’t until recently that I discovered that the following label came with it:
I freaked out. How could a set of cables attached to a small blue blinking cylinder cause cancer? The USB connector and keyboard inputs seemed harmless enough, and I hadn’t felt obvious symptoms while making music. Was I risking my life for the sake of my four-person fan base? So I called the company, M-Audio. Apparently, manufacturers have to put this label on certain products to comply with Proposition 65, a California law that requires a warning on anything containing lead or other hazardous substances found to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Under this law, whose full title is The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, warnings must be placed on products with a chemicals present in amounts larger than what the California government has decided is a “safe harbor number.” These requirements are pretty strict. For example, for a cancer-causing chemical, according to the state’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, “a person exposed to the chemical at the ‘no significant risk level’ for 70 years would not have more than a ‘one in 100,000’ chance of developing cancer as a result of that exposure.” So, if there would be more than one excess case of cancer out of 100,000 people over a period of 70 years because of exposure to that amount of the substance, slap on that label. It’s not just computing equipment. Amazon.com outlines for its customers required warnings for California consumers placed on tools, lead crystal glasses, ceramic tableware, jewelry, Tiffany style lamps, electrical cords, beauty products, and even motor vehicles. The consequences for violating Proposition 65 can be pretty fierce. One Los Angeles company had to pay a $10 million fine for failing to label lead-tainted lunch boxes (they sold 100,000 of them to the state health department), the Los Angeles Times reported earlier this year. Still, does that mean I have to wash my hands every time I touch the cord? Mark Williams, spokesperson for M-Audio, says, “No! My gosh, no!” In general, he says, electronics products carry this label because of the materials used in circuit boards, such as lead, for example. It’s not like there’s pesticide sprayed on the surface, he says. In fact, according to the company’s official statement on the issue, a device with a lead warning might not have any lead at all:
Maybe people are used to seeing these labels by now. Williams said mine was the first call he’s received on the issue in his five months in media relations at the company. So, now I will make my techno versions of acoustic indie songs in relative peace. Editor's Note: Medical news is a popular but sensitive subject rooted in science. Recently bought a shirt that contains this label. Even though it is a favorite, I am not going to let my son wear the shirt. If what is in the product is minimal than why label it? It is creating concern and confusion. Why is California doing things so different than all other states?
We recently purchased 2 ERICA furniture throws that had a cancer warning label. This is our 3rd set of furniture throws and the first to see a cancer warning label. Is there any furniture throws out there that does not have a cancer warning label on then???
I recently purchased 2 cans of New Vitality products. This is considered a health product and is ingested as food. The new Vitality Reds and cocoa, came with a warning label stating that the powered food contains lead and could cause cancer. How can amazon sell this and not let the consumer know until it is purchased and received?
Because the most signifi NBA jerseys cant production state, The far east provide that almost all living inges where can you buy jerseys ting products and solutions. within sport activity spot, low-priced nfl jerseys youngsters. for example low-priced NBA jerseys, nfl hat stores. kids soccer gear which often in addition is the owner of an enormous marketpl
Put electric tape around it do you don't have to wash you hands
If you buy the $5.50 splitter headphones that lets you put two earphones in a phone at once. If it says that label about cancer and washing your hands, just put electric tape so you don't touch it and not have to wash your hands every time
FINALLY!!!!! I found information on this matter that "freaked" me out also that is Actually HELFPUFL!!! THANK YOUUUUU!
Thank you!
I am just want a definite yes or no answer are the sissors and pill tray, can opener of any immediate harm to my person?
I'm shopping for my granddaughters for Christmas when I started seeing online that several of the baby dolls have this proposition 65 warning on them. Does that mean they are not safe for children? If so how can they sell them or manufacture them this way?
I bought a pair of black jeans that I had to wash about 10 times . Soaked in vinegar and baking soda before I could wear them. My friend works for amazon and had to buy mask to wear because clothes and things from China were so toxic. Try to find something that is not made in china
Hopefully our new president will bring business back to USA. I remember when everything was made inUSA and we never worried about these toxic chemicals in our clothes
The presidents products are made in China
I'm shock at all the info. I've found on unsafe material and/or ingredients used in the U.S.A. and abroad. I will share the message.

Just purchased a pair of sunglasses with the label. I glad I found this site to explain it. Personally I appreciate the warning. We are exposed to so many elements. It is helpful to know in order to make decisions that might affect health. In addition, maybe labels might compel manufactures to choose other materials if it affects their bottom line. I will return glasses, but, not before I write company and explain my return.
Good for you! More people should do this and maybe companies will start caring more about the quality of the product they are manufacturing. More and more, people are complacent in taking things like this more serious. They feel that "everyone is using this, eating this, wearing this, etc." and they are ok with it because of that reason alone. I hope more people get serious about holding companies accountable to providing safe products for us all!

I find this type of editorial useful in bringing this code/regulation to the masses but I found it slightly lacking in explanation. Here in the UK we currently come under EU directives which places similar obligations on suppliers to comply. Once all standards are met the item/object would have the letters "CE" marked on the item and displayed on the outer packaging. For instance a baby's toy marked CE would be safe enough for the baby to put it in its mouth without knowing what its made of. This stops suppliers being able to comply by way of labelling all their products with the proposition 65 notice without reference to what they actually comprise. This all leads back to the problem experienced by the writer, rather than actually finding out what the item comprises and if it really is hazardous. They like most others chose to stick a warning on it
Who can I call about my concerns about seeing this label on several items, such as, folding canvas chair, folding camping bed(Coleman), sleeping bag(?), extension cord.. I have called Coleman, and they said one would have to drink it in excess. I am concerned about this as I see this on items it seems more frequently, and now I don't want to buy the items...
I recently purchased a duffle bag and saw the same label on it. Worried and confused whether to return it or use it.

Sounds like a bunch of crap. There shouldn't be ANY lead on headphone wires, and yes ice seen the warnings that day there are. I think it used to be the UL company that use to protect consumers from this kind of junk. They've been bought out.
I Saw The Same Warning On A Steering Wheel I Had Purchased, And I Sent It Back To The Company. I Did Not Want To Be Exposed To Cancer, Birth Defects Fumes...While Driving And With My Children In The Car, Too. This Proposition 65 Means Something Serious To Me...For I Wonder, Why Put The Warning Out Here...If There Are No Concern Or Risks? I Think Seller Of This Proposition 65 Need To Be Upfront With Their Customers, And Give Us Our Rights To Buy...Or Not To Buy. This Seller, Hid This Warning...Until I Received It...And Saw It. I Immediately Was Concerned, And Returned It.
People should be freaked out about the chemicals in our products and foods! I'm glad the state of California is stepping in to warn people. These companies don't have to include these chemicals but I'm sure it's mostly for cost savings on their part. Companies don't care if you get cancer- they just want your money. I wish all products had this label so people would boycott them and force companies to stop using these chemicals. Additionally, we cannot rely on the FDA to protect us as they have their hands in the pockets of lobbyists.
until California resends this law it is doing far more harm than good to Consumer awareness and consumer Trust the main problem is
Why does World Traveler lugage say it might cause cancer?
Basically, sellers are so worried about lawsuits they just put the stickers on everything. So the stickers don't serve any purpose anymore!
Wait so it affects the food chain as well?? Better kill entire jungles and forests with fire across the globe just to be on the safe side. When global warming comes to our doorstep we tell it we saved it from cancer and alls gud.
I just saw this warning on a vase I ordered. The vase is from China: ordered on line but the label states “this product contains a chemical
Known to the state of California to cause cancer”;
Clasp is double

Recently bought a water softener. Inside were parts (yoke and bypass) in a plastic bag with the Warning: Cancer or reproductive harm. The water from my well would enter through these parts and also exit from them after the softening process. They are made of a very dense plastic material. Since I would be drinking the water after softening, do I need to worry about "leaching" from these parts, over time, that may cause cancer? There are many cancer causing chemicals in plastics (polycarbonates), such as BPA – which are not advisable to drink from (such as plastic cups and thermal containers). Many now list "BPA free" on the labels – so it would appear that these softener parts are not BPA free and would be dangerous to me, in so far as drinking the water after going through the softener...?? Would appreciate feedback from someone with scientific knowledge on this...
