Sugar not only makes you fat, it may make you sick

In recent years, sugar - more so than fat - has been receiving the bulk of the blame for our deteriorating health.

Most of us know we consume more sugar than we should.  Let's be honest, it's hard not to.

The (new) bad news is that sugar does more damage to our bodies than we originally thought.  It was once considered to be just another marker for an unhealthy diet and obesity.  Now sugar is considered an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, as well as many other chronic diseases, according a study published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine.

“Sugar has adverse health effects above any purported role as ‘empty calories’ promoting obesity,” writes Laura Schmidt, a professor of health policy in the School of Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco, in an accompanying editorial. “Too much sugar doesn’t just make us fat; it can also make us sick.”

But how much is too much? Turns out not nearly as much as you may think.  As a few doctors and scientists have been screaming for a while now, a little bit of sugar goes a long way.

Added sugars, according to most experts, are far more harmful to our bodies than naturally-occurring sugars.  We're talking about the sugars used in processed or prepared foods like sugar-sweetened beverages, grain-based desserts, fruit drinks, dairy desserts, candy, ready-to-eat cereal and yeast breads. Your fruits and (natural) fruit juices are safe.

Recommendations for your daily allotment of added sugar vary widely:

- The Institute of Medicine recommends that added sugars make up less than 25% of your total calories
- The World Health Organization recommends less than 10%
- The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugars to less than 100 calories daily for women and 150 calories daily for men

The U.S. government hasn't issued a dietary limit for added sugars, like it has for calories, fats, sodium, etc.  Furthermore, sugar is classified by the Food and Drug administration as "generally safe," which allows manufacturers to add unlimited amounts to any food.

"There is a difference between setting the limit for nutrients or other substances in food and setting limits for what people should be consuming," an FDA spokesperson wrote in an e-mail to CNN. "FDA does not set limits for what people should be eating."

"With regard to setting a regulatory limit for added sugar in food, FDA would carefully consider scientific evidence in determining whether regulatory limits are needed, as it would for other substances in food."

There is some good news. While the mean percentage of calories consumed from added sugars increased from 15.7% in 1988-1994 to 16.8% in 1999-2004, it actually decreased to 14.9% between 2005 and 2010. But most adults still consumed 10% or more of their calories from added sugar and about 1 in 10 people consumed 25% or more of their calories from sugar during the same time period.

Participants in the study who consumed approximately 17 to 21% of their calories from added sugar had a 38% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, compared with those who consumed approximately 8% of calories from added sugar, the study authors concluded.

“This relative risk was more than double for those who consumed 21% or more of calories from added sugar,” they wrote.

The Sugar Association said in a statement there "are a number of major flaws with this new study and the sensationalism associated with targeting sugar is fueling the media." The authors conclude that "an observational study like theirs is not proof of cause and effect," the association noted, and "extensive knowledge gaps exist."

"Bottom line: All-natural sugar has been consumed safely for centuries, and when consumed in moderation, has been and should continue to be part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle," the statement said.

Schmidt writes in the study that these new findings “provide physicians and consumers with actionable guidance. Until federal guidelines are forthcoming, physicians may want to caution patients that, to support cardiovascular health, it’s safest to consume less than 15% of their daily calories from added sugar.”

That’s the equivalent, Schmidt points out, of drinking one 20-ounce Mountain Dew soda in a 2,000-calorie diet.

“From there, the risk rises exponentially as a function of increased sugar intake,” she writes.

In a statement, the American Beverage Association said the study "shows that adult consumption of added sugars has actually declined, as recently reported by the (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

"A significant part of that reduction is from decreased added sugars from beverages due, in part, to our member companies' ongoing innovation in providing more low- and no-calorie options. Furthermore, this is an observational study which cannot - and does not - show that cardiovascular disease is caused by drinking sugar-sweetened beverages."

Despite our changing scientific understanding and a growing body of evidence on sugar overconsumption as an independent risk factor in chronic disease, sugar regulation remains an uphill battle in the United States.  This is contrasted by the increased frequency of regulation abroad, where 15 countries now have taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages.

“‘Sin taxes,’ whether on tobacco, alcohol, or sugar-laden products, are popular because they are easy to enforce and generate revenue, with a well-documented evidence base supporting their effectiveness for lowering consumption,” writes Schmidt.

But forget about the short-term monetary cost.  Before you reach for that next sugary treat, think long and hard about the long-term cost to your health.

      Is this mainly because of the types of sugars they're using like HFCS's? I'm not saying it's any better for you, but are the sodas made with natural sugars worse/same/better? Also, sweet teas made at home are they just as bad? Just curious. I don't really care for any sodas, but I'm a Southern girl and love my sweet tea, but I usually make my own or buy some that has sugar and not HFCS.

      To Melissa Jean0: There really is not too much difference between table sugar and HFCS. HFCS contains slightly more Fructose then table sugar and so is slightly worse for you. Your body needs some sugar to survive, but moderation is the key. Myself, I don't drink any soda unless it is diet and have almost completely cut out pasta too (it turns into sugar in your gut). The difference it has made in how I feel is remarkable. I am at the point now where I can actually get high off a glass of orange juice:-)

      Diet sodas made with aspartame are safe. Diet sodas made with saccharin are safe for normal levels of drinking. I'm not sure about sorbitol. I think it's safe (for normal levels of drinking) but can't find any studies on that. The same is true for sucralose. I'll note that all of these are plagued by hoaxes claiming they're harmful. Personally I suspect the hoaxes are started by the sugar companies-and I know for sure they're passed around by the willfully ignorant.

      Sucralose

      In the same interview, Dr. Friedman points out that sucralose is made with chemically modified real sugar. What chemical is it modified with, you might ask? The answer is acetone. This is the same chemical that is used in nail polish remover. Now, can you imagine putting that into your body? Further chemicals include: benzene, which is a carcinogen found in oil and gasoline; another is methanol or wood alcohol which is used in windshield wiper fluid and antifreeze. Finally, the last chemical is formaldehyde, which I am sure that almost everyone knows is used to preserve dead things.

      Aspartame

      Aspartame is probably the most popular sweetener on the market right now, but questions have been raised by many health professionals and consumer protections groups as to how this got FDA approval for human consumption.

      Dr. Friedman notes that the FDA receives numerous complaints as to the side effects caused by aspartame which include:

      -Memory loss

      -Headache

      -seizures

      -insomnia

      -dizziness

      -weight gain

      -fatigue

      In addition to this list, there are at least 92 other side effects that have been associated with long term aspartame use.

      Aspartame is also found in many packaged products that we, the trusting consumers probably have never checked the labels for. Such as:

      Sodas

      Breath mints

      Gum

      Teas

      Pharmaceuticals-vitamins, cough syrups

      Wine coolers

      Yogurt

      Coffee

      Cereal

      Saccharin

      The last of the deadly three.

      Saccharin received a lot of notoriety in the late 1960's for its association with cancer in test animals. So public use is on the decline.

      As far as the chemical composition of saccharin, it is made from coal/tar derivatives which has no food value at all. It is also made with ammonia.

      SRQIggy, you know how I know that you don't know a thing about chemistry? Sucralose does NOT contain either acetone or benzene. It is used as a solvent to isolate the compound from maltodextrin. Once the compound is isolated, the solvent is evaporated and then scrubbed from the product, which is packaged with more base maltodextrin than anything else. Most of what you see in a Splenda packet is just maltodextrin and nothing more. There is very little actual sucralose in those little packets. In the end, the only thing Splenda contains is sucralose molecules and maltodextrin. The acetone and/or benzene are evaporated and cleaned from the product. Solvents are not usually ingredients, so stop scaremongering about something that you know nothing about.

      In response to SRQlggy: It does not matter what chemicals are used as raw materials to create another chemical. What matters is the final chemical byproduct and nothing else, in terms of its effect on an individual. The Earthy crunchy people which make these types of claims really have no understanding of basic Chemistry. Maybe that is why they have never been very successful in pushing forth their agenda.

      @SRQIggy just because it's treated with acetone, doesn't mean you're ingesting pure acetone. Same way Sodium and Chlorine are combined to make the table salt we all consume daily; either of which ingested by itself will spell problems for you.

      Aspartame is not safe at all! Google it and you will see. I learned the hard way when i tried switching to diet and zero type sodas. The only one not made with aspartame is Diet Coke, and that is made with saccharin, which is just as bad. Please Please before you drink aspartame look into it, it has a long history of not just medical studies but also a very controversial history of how it came to the marketplace to begin with. I am not trying to step on any ones toes, just trying to save some misery.

      It's the corn industry that insist that corn syrup must be equated with "sugar" – all sugar is not treated as equal by the body. Plenty of people have switched to avoiding HFCS and lost weight. It's why Americans in particular are fat, not just sugar, but hfcs. If they want to talk about "the sugar in soda" – I don't think it's the "alternative" sugar-only sodas that are "killing" people.

      Table sugar is basically just as bad. I don't think your weight loss is due to cutting out HFCS in particular, but to you cutting down on your sugar intake in general. It just so happens that your main source of sugar was HFCS, if it had been table sugar (or orange juice) and you cut that out, you would have seen the same results. Good for you for losing the weight by the way!

    I hope this message gets out – our idiot president's wife goes and changes all the kids lunches, cuts way back on protein and fat in them, leaving nothing but carbs – and starved kids. They cannot fill up on carbs and be sated for the day. Ya need protein, fat, and minimal carbs. The food pyramid is upside down, with exception of sweets being a small portion of it. (I hope I don't get audited by the IRS for crediting miss Michele..... But she was wrong to try to fix the lunches, when she just made them worse.

    Even too much water is bad for you. They should promote healthy eating but also a healthy life style. I'm not talking just about the guy who plays video games for long stretches of time, but those of us who are forced to sit at a desk for hours at a time without being able to get up because some job needs to be rushed.

    I think there is more to our health problems than just sugar.

      To Steve: How do you propose that we ban sugar? It comes from sooo many different foods, and your body actually produces it in the liver, and from digesting any carbohydrates (Pasta, Rice, Corn, Potatoes, Beans, etc) that you ingest. If there ever was such a way as to completely ban sugar, then everyone would die very quickly. Like all other extremists, you will try to latch onto any conversation that you can and insert a smart a$$ remark to try and further your agenda.

    I go for things naturally sweet if I can, I've cut my soda intake to one soda a day or none at all. Since then I've noticed a huge change in how I feel. Sugar in large amounts is not good for anyone, but then again anything in large amounts tend to not be healthy for a person.

    Every fat person I know drinks soda, and they largely ingest cold drinks. One would think observation should teach, but not in America. We still have groups saying smoking is not bad for your health.

    Table sugar, high fructose corn syrup, etc. are all deleterious to one's health. Why would you want to ingest something that will adversely affect your health?

      Abby, I'll bet you're one of those vapid women who slathers perfume all over herself so much you can still smell you 20 minutes after you leave a room.

      Since the 70's, cosmetics companies have been adding petrochemicals known to be cancer causing agents into the use & manufacture of their products. They are not regulated by the FDA because of "trade secretes" so they can get away with putting known mutagens in their products, which you vapid women then subject the rest of us to.

      Whether you do it out of vanity, or ignorance, you're subjecting your body to carcinogenic toxins – and the rate of breast cancer has exploded since the 70's. The worst hit? RICH WOMEN – who can afford a ton of perfume.

      So whine and snivel some more how you'd NEVER eat sugar – and then slather on some more pukey stench and make the rest of us have to suffer.

    Let's see my suggested diet is 1560 calories per day. One quarter of that, 391 calories, can come from sugar. There are 16 calories in a tsp of sugar, so I should be able to have 24 tsp (or 1/2 cup) of sugar per day. Jeez, I use waaay less than that. I guess I can safely ignore this issue for now on.

    It's funny how most of us old folks are interested in what they say is good for us and how so many of our younger people say they can care less. I don't think it is just because the younger ones can expect to live longer then us old worrywarts. I think it has something to do with the younger generations dissatisfaction with the mess we will leaving behind for them to straighten out. Shame on us.

    Wow...what a well written article...Uhhhh, Duhhhh its Corn Syrup, not sugar. While they are both sweetners, the syrup is actually a lot more negative on the health. Most drinks are sweetened with syrup so BigCo can save money and influence obesity with the induced hunger affect of the corn syrup. Thank you uncle BigCo.

    Here we go again. I've noticed many things work in "revolutions" as in they just revolve around and around and around. The "sugar" issue is one of them. If I recall, was somewhere in the 90s they had the giant "oh noes, sugar" scare, and more sugar-alternatives hit the market than one could even keep track of. But then guess what, oh noes, all these studies started coming out in the past decade that showed that many of the ingredients found in those alternatives were giving people cancer, and then real can sugar was being endorsed again... part of the reason some companies actually have throwback sodas with real sugar instead of fructose corn-syrup. Now here we are, once again, the "sugar scares" begin anew... are there new and improved alternatives that need a market push or something?

    Seems now and days, this generation has become kind of "soft"? I mean, don't get me wrong, who doesn't want to live to be 500 years old, but seriously... sugar has been around and used for centuries, and now suddenly in the past 30+ years, there's been sugar crusade after sugar crusade on its "evils", and "how it can kill you". And I won't lie or pad the truth either... yes, sugar can be bad for you, yes, too much of it over time can give one diabetes, and yes, too much of it can kill you. But as some have said, as is true, moderation is the key... self-discipline as well. After all, the biggest key to any average diet is self-discipline. Now and days the world is becoming, I don't want to say lazy, perhaps "complacent" is a better word? We as a people want to say all these things are harmful on paper... things that are harmful if you ingest them around the clock and never exercise or work regularly. Trust me, anybody out there that has a standard 9-5 job with even mildly labor stimulation who doesn't drink soda like it's going out of style will be perfectly fine... it's not like you're going to just magically and suddenly have all your arteries clog overnight.

    So many of these "scare you straight" articles come out and don't always point out that if you jog, work, exercise, and have a regular average diet... a soda or some junk food here and there is actually okay.

    Seriously, stop sweating the small things and worrying about every little thing. This is coming from somebody that lift weights on a regular basis... 5'10", 205-225lbs (fluctuates from time to time), with about 15% or so body fat (over the age of 30)... and yes, I also drink coffee, soda, and partake in junk food somewhat regularly. *shrugs*

    I find it's not hard to cut out added sugars if you eat a more whole-food based diet without processed foods. I track my nutrition on My Fitness Pal though, and am always startled by my sugar levels from fruit, vegetables, dairy, etc...I know that it's really added sugar that is the problem, but it makes me wonder what the overall impact is of high sugar levels in general, from natural sources.

    As a physician I will often ask people to write down what they eat for a week. They usually think they are eating healthy and cannot understand why they are not losing weight or feeling better. It's shocking how much sugar they are consuming! A lot of fat free things add more sugar than their regular counterpart. If we take out the fat we have to make it taste good so we add sugar. Fat free is not always the healthiest option. Our country consumes so much sugar daily and it only appears to be getting worse! For me, patient education is huge regarding sugar intake.

    Stevia appears to be the only safe "sweet" additive. If you can tolerate the taste. For me, I'm weening myself off of sugars unless I get them from fresh fruit. Maybe ONE dessert a month. I'm really not missing it.
