CDC: 200,000 people die needlessly every year

Every year, nearly 800,000 people die from cardiovascular disease. That's 30% of all deaths under the age of 75, according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And nearly a quarter of those deaths could be prevented, the study authors found.

That's 200,000 lives that could be saved every year, said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC.  Particularly striking is the fact that 56% of those deaths occurred among people under the age of 65.

"We're talking about hundreds of thousands of deaths that happen when they don't have to happen," said Frieden.

"The numbers themselves don't surprise me," said Dr. David May, "but the numbers embarrass me." May is chair of the board of governors for the American College of Cardiology and a practicing cardiologist.

African-Americans were twice as likely as any other group to die from preventable heart disease, according to the study.  Men were two times more likely than women to die from heart disease and stroke.

But, Friedan noted, "your longevity may be more likely to be influenced by your zip code, than your genetic code.“  According to the research, the District of Columbia had the highest rates of avoidable deaths - 99 deaths for every 100,000 people.  That's more than double the rate in Minnesota, the state with the lowest number of preventable deaths.

Researchers say the highest rates of death from hypertension and cardiovascular disease were found in the South.  And those differences were even more pronounced when looking at the county level; some counties had rates 10 times higher than their neighbors'.

But there was a silver lining in the CDC's review of mortality data.  Between 2001 and 2010, the avoidable death rate from heart disease, stroke and hypertension decreased by 29% overall, with the greatest improvements found in the 65 to 74 age group.

According to the CDC, the discrepancies between age groups may be attributed to the fact that older people have more access to health care because of Medicare.

As the Affordable Care Act comes into effect, Frieden anticipates that more people will be able to access preventative care. "We do expect if people get insured, get care, we will see significant reductions in the numbers."

Prevention can be as simple as following the "ABCS," says Frieden:  Aspirin, blood pressure control, cholesterol management and smoking cessation.

"It sounds so simple," says Dr. Ralph Sacco, former president of the American Heart Association.  But, he adds, "getting people to get their blood pressure under better control, cholesterol managed and (to) stop smoking" isn't easy.

Which is why Frieden also pointed to the need of community based initiatives, like the Sodium Reduction in Communities Program, a county level effort to reduce sodium in schools and restaurants.  In addition, he believes the use of electronic health records can contribute to better identifying and supporting patients who need help in quitting smoking and blood pressure management.

It's never too early to start, Sacco said. "Focusing earlier and younger on the right thing," he said. " Getting kids to focus on healthier diets and exercising."

"Bottom line," says Frieden, "this is the No. 1 cause of death, the No. 1 preventable death, and the No. 1 cause of inequalities. And we can make rapid changes to improve."

No, it just means prevention wouldn't have made a difference. Many people get cardiovascular disease because of factors that can't be controlled for: age, gender, family history. You can't change those.

You can change your diet, exercise, not smoke, not drink, control your stress.

It isn't the single biggest cause of preventable death. Smoking is. Smoking kills more than 400,000 Americans each year. That's equivalent to more deaths than if we had a 9/11 attack every three days.

iconoclast1, that is incorrect. The first sentence of the article reads, "Every year, nearly 800,000 people die from cardiovascular disease." 800,000 is larger than 400,000. Don't you hate it when the pesky first sentence of an article undermines your post?

And if you read the third sentence, you would see that only 1/4 of those are preventable deaths... 400,00 is greater than 200,000, right?

@Iconnot Read: Good to see you're living up to your screen name there, chief. I'll type slowly so you can follow along. The article says one quarter of 800,000 deaths from cardiovascular disease ARE PREVENTABLE. Not 800,000 but one quarter of that. That is 200,000. However, 400,000 people die from smoking and that is preventable because people can quit smoking, So to recap, 400,000 is greater than 200,000. You can read, but your new screen name should be Iconnot Comprehend.

There is also overlap between those categorized as from cardiovascular disease and those that are smoking related.

According to the CDC data estimating the impact of tobacco on mortality rates, about a third of the tobacco related deaths are cardiovascular disease deaths. Approximately 130,000 of the roughly 800,000 deaths from cardiovascular disease would therefore also be preventable smoking related deaths.... which would make the majority of those 200,000 deaths from cardiovascular disease being labeled as preventable in this article being the smoking related cardiovascular disease deaths.

What about the 100k that die from hospital acquired infections each year plus the 100k from medication errors? even more preventable, and by those "trained"

I know this sounds confusing, but the vast vast majority of those people were already very old and immunocompromised. So they were likely to die soon anyway.

The people who die from preventable heart failure are otherwise, relatively young and healthy.

You want to prevent cardiovascular disease as well as many others? It's called diet and exercise. Those two things play a major role in our health yet they are underplayed here. We medicate everyone in America like there is some miracle pill for what ails you. Pain pills to mask the underlying pain, acid reflux pills, so you can continue to eat what causes it to begin with, etc....The stats don't surprise me when over 50% of our population is considered overweight. And people wonder why our health care costs so much...

I've been an avid exerciser for 25 years (currently a 56 year old male), not overweight, never smoked, never had a high blood pressure reading – not one! Blood work looks great – everything within normal range. Resting pulse is 60 bpm. (The ambulance gentleman asked me if I was a runner – yes, I was, until I got plantar fasciitis 4 years ago, now I swim) I had a heart attack 4 months ago. So, now I'm in a medically necessary (ie, reimbursed by Blue Cross) "Cardiac Rehab" program to get me to change my lifestyle to include exercise. How ridiculous! I enjoy it, so I'm not putting up a fight. But it is changing nothing. And if exercise didn't work for me in the past, why would anyone expect it to work in the future. It's not about my care, it's all about what's billable. (My Dad died of a heart attack at age 66. I'm 56, so I guess I have 10 more years, although my Dad never got a stent. I don't think they had stents.)

I recently visited the Minnesota State Fair. Minnesota is supposedly one of the healthier states. The amount of blubber waddling around the fairgrounds was simply incredible. It is truly a national embarrassment and disgrace. Now that the AMA has declared obesity a "disease" [funny how this disease principally visits Kuwaitis, Mexicans and Americans] the lard buckets stuffing themselves with fried cheese curds and fried snicker bars are absolved of responsibility, since they are hapless victims of butterballitis. This is no longer the country that stormed Normandy beach. We couldn't do it; there is a notable incline. Perhaps we can arrange to sit on our next enemy, or fight them going downhill.

I was also at the Minnesota state fair. While I did see a lot of overweight people, I also saw a lot of healthier looking people. Also one of the main events of the MN State Fair is the deep fried and pure unhealthy food so it does attract a lot of the people that are overweight and also because of the fair's size, it attracts people from outside of MN.

I agree. Diet and exercise would go a LONG WAY in preventing A LOT of heart disease. It's a shame that the article promotes the Affordable Care Act as the solution, when common sense diet and exercise is what's needed. If you think health care is expensive now, just wait until it is "free"... just like Social Security and Medicare, the Affordable Care Act will eventually become a Federal program that costs WAY more than what tax revenues can support.

PaulMN (above) no doubt the affordable care act will include lots of incentive for healthier living and preventive medicine, something sorely lacking in today's medicine where doctors get paid more if they do more surgery and keep you sick. When the system rewards good outcomes, there will be better outcomes.

Ever since Michele Obama dared suggest people stop eating terrible foods, the right has painted obesity reduction as another left wing nanny-state agenda. So people in red states now have another rationalization to not lose weight, and its a powerful one: Obama wants them to. it has become a point of pride among conservatives that hate Obama. i saw it with my own eyes on a trip to Miss.

I don't think that the type of people who don't go to the doctor because of lack of insurance are going to be the type of people to follow a doctor's advice. Meaning, I don't think Obamacare is going to do much with this "preventable deaths" number.

Lots of people want insurance but cannot afford it. They would be fairly likely to follow a doctor's advice. The big category that don't want insurance are the twenty/thirty-something single males. They certainly can benefit from insurance, but they are not at risk for this sort of problem... yet. At least most are not.

All you people who think Obama's akin to Karl Marx, and that the fact that we pay TWICE as much as they do in Europe, for lower quality health care, is just fine, and who don't know that people without medical insurance are THREE times as likely to die from an issue as someone who does have it: THIS is why medical care should be nationalized, the same way the military, public works, and education are. MOST people used to think that, back in Roosevelt's and Truman's administrations, before business interests did their best to propagandize us and make it sound like the communists were taking over any day. And, that worked. Too much money was being made, so it's necessary to let people die before they need to, so that those people can continue to make that money.

Although these statistics are shocking, most americans have no idea that there is a radiology imaging study that has been availalbe for over 10 years, that can idenitfy cardiac/coronary artery disease in its earliest stages. Cardiac CT angiography or CCTA, uses the newest CT scanners to image the coronary artery anatomy and has the capability of viewing inside the artery and evaluate atherosclerotic plaue as it is developing; long before a stress test would be positive or when the disease iis causing a narrowing ( stenosis) that causes chest pain. This is also at most venerable time when a plaque can rupture and cause a terminal heart attack!!! Some insurance companies cover this study but for the vast majority of americans, this is an out of pocket expence that can save your life or at least identify disease when it is most treatable. Like mammography, CCTA should be a standard screening study that in the end, would save this country 100's of millions of dollars in cardiac care costs once a patient has iirreversable disease. We should demand from our insurance/health coverage companies that this test be a part of our routine physicals and possibly save so many of those who would otherwise die.

You are right on the money DrSteve. My husband, 57 had a major heart attack over the weekend. He has never smoked, rarely drinks, eats a healthy diet, exercises, has normal blood pressure, normal cholesterol, and has never had any known heart issues. He was in the hospital for a few days for diverticulitis last month, and no one noticed the heart attack freight train headed our way. I am very thankful we live about a mile from the hospital and he was in the ER within 10 minutes of the onset of pain and that I gave him an aspirin before walking out of our door . Had this test been done as part of a regular testing schedule, we possibly could have found out the extensive damage lurking in his arteries. He is doing much better, but will have to go back in a few weeks once his heart is stronger and fix another artery which is 85% blocked. We were very lucky. I wish this test was offered to everyone to possibly avoid what we just went through.

I understand your rationale for suggesting increased screening using CCTA to determine a patient's degree and extent of cardiovascular disease present and how this can lead to early detection and treatment. However, I don't concur with your statement that cardiovascular disease can become an irreversible disease in most patients. Read Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn's book called "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure first and then you may think twice before posting this statement. As someone who has beaten his cardiovascular disease by following a plant-based diet and walking 10,000 plus steps per day, I tend to believe our conventional way of currently treating this disease may be flawed. This is not to say that early detection testing doesn't have its place – just the way we treat heart patients with stents, bypass surgeries and pills doesn't lead to an effective cure. A more simple solution is found in what we eat on a daily basis. Just give up the meat and dairy products and learn to thrive on plants and fruit. It's just so simple!

Onemoreblond, I am so hopeful that your husband does well and fully recovers. I am not sure CCTA would have been the answer but it certainly would have given you both a "heads up" that there was some potential for a cardiac event. I have been providing this imaging technique for over 10 yrs and have been told numerous times how the info, provided by these studies, has changes peoples lives and for that, I am happy and I feel privaleged to have the knowledge and expertise to educate patients withthis increadible technique.

Jeff, I get your point! But, there is something called genetics that one can't run from! Believe it of not, sometimes it doesn't matter what you eat. I have seen people with cholesterol levels below 100, are vegitatians, don't drink or smoke and have advanced coronary artery disease and dangerous stenoses. And, other patients with cholesterol levels over 250 and no disease what so ever!! Its genetics...if you have a first degree relative with a stong history of heart disease, unfortunately, there may not be much you can do to avoid it. Agreed, avoiding meat, fats and all those yummy things that unfortunately, are not good for you is probably the best advise.....but do you think the American public has the determination that you have??? I don't thing so. One thing I can tell you is that when I show someone his/her heart in 3D and run them through their own coronary arteries where there may be early disease, this has an increadible impact! I never said coronary artery disease was reverslable but with knowledge, comes better decisions!!! Education was the whole point of my post.

      Hi Dr. Steve,
I think you would be surprised how willing most patients would be to accept the terms of going on a plant-based diet versus undergoing cardiac bypass surgery. Just look at Bill Clinton's case as an example. He survived bypass surgery, then had a stent put in and that clogged with plaque with a couple of years. After doing his research and studying the work of Dr. Dean Ornish and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, he went on a plant-based diet and hasn't had another cardiac event while living a full and productive retirement. When you eliminate fatty foods that are high in cholesterol from your diet and eat whole grains and beans/legumes with lots of garden vegetables & fruit, the fiber content in your diet climbs and your veins and arteries will be repaired over time. Eliminate the need for oil in your diet and get it from natural sources full in fiber – like walnuts, pistachio nuts, flax seed, etc.. Please read Dr. Esselstyn's book and see how effective his results were on the patients in his study at the Cleveland Clinic. Look at the work of Dr. Colin Campbell and then try and explain to me why Asian women who move to the USA have a higher level of breast cancer and heart disease than their counterparts back home. American fast food and lack of exercise is what's killing us and doctors need to put this option on the table for their patients. By not doing so, it creates an environment where the sick just get sicker and no amount of pills or surgeries will really solve their chronic illnesses. I'm living proof that it works and my father died of a heart attack when he was 60, my grandfather at 44, my first wife at 43 and many other relatives. That's why I chose to go down this path and it really is life changing. My metabolism changed and my stamina level has returned. Aren't doctors supposed to give nutritional advice to their patients which will help them overcome their "genetic" background? I most certainly hope so!

It's all so simple. Stop smoking (or never start) and you will LIVE FOREVER. Before there were cigarettes, people didn't die. Did you know that? There are non-smokers walking around now who were born 1000 years ago. Just kidding (or maybe it's true.) But how about this: The longer more people live, say into their 90s, the LESS medical care all but the wealthy will get because we as a country will not be able to provide it for more and more long-lived people. Medicare will be postponed to age 70 very soon as it is. So you'll either have to work until 70 or be rich to retire sooner. Who will want to live long just to work another 5 years at a job they hate? Most workers can't wait to get out of their work prisons. So, yeah. Make all those "healthy lifestyle" changes, outlive your savings, then end up in a one-room senior highrise with a microwave meal and a TV. Wow! That's the good life, allright.

A misleading and political article. In fact, all of those people would have died at some point. Prolongation of life is a matter of public conscience, not economics. People who perish of CV disease at a relatively early age will in fact cost less to the system, as they never will develop Altzheimer's or other chronic diseases requiring decades of care. It is time that we looked at such issues realistically. We want people to have healthy long lives of good quality. That is the bottom lineand what the medical profession should strive for.

Of course that can't be discussed though, else someone will say "death panels" and all useful discussion will stop.

There needs be a process whereby the population is kept in check. Disease is but one part of the overall picture. We have war, acts of the sky fairy, famines, stupid behavior, murder, accident and self-extinction. Why worry, you can not live forever.

I concur with Dr. Hubbard – it's a misleading article that points out a lot of statistics on heart attack and stoke incidents in different parts of the country and how smoking can negatively affect one's chances of dying from cardiovascular disease at a young age. It does not address the root cause of what is causing cardiovascular disease in this country, nor most of our other chronic diseases. Dr. Sanjay Gupta did a much better job of addressing this subject in his special report "Heart Attack Proof", which identified the real root cause of what causes most heart attacks and stokes over time – the "Standard American Diet" and lack of exercise on a daily basis. He interviewed Bill Clinton and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn during this special and the touted the benefits of going on a plant-based diet as the best way of reducing one's risk of developing cardiovascular disease. I've been living this lifestyle for two full years now and it absolutely stops most chronic disease in their tracks! I've lost almost 30 pounds and my BMI is down to 21.2 now. I use to have trouble walking a mile without stopping to catch my breath. Now I can walk 15 miles a day with my wife in NYC without stopping on a Sunday – even after eating a three course Italian lunch (all plant based with NO OIL). At 56 years old, I now am the same size I was back as a Junior in high school and can do all the things I did back then. Anyone can make this change in their lives and know they can reverse their cardiovascular disease and get their stamina back in the process. It doesn't take a pill to control your high cholesterol, high triglycerides or high blood pressure. It's all about the food choices that one makes – stop eating processed food, give up white sugar and bleached flour, learn to thrive on plants and fruit instead every day. It only took me about 6 months to lose 25 pounds and I was never hungry along the way. Living without meat, dairy products and processed foods is really a whole lot easier than most folks think and you won't be depriving yourself of anything. If you take this path forward, then you'll truly have a healthy long life of good quality and the time to travel well – even in to your 80's and beyond.

One way is to close the adult book stores where men have sex with other men at the glory holes and theatre and spread disease to one another....The people that allow these stores to continue are killing us, it is like they are firing a gun at us but the ammunition that is killing us slowly are diseases and values that are raping our community of morals.........(dirtandmoredirt com)

LA DENUNCIA QUE SE PRESENTO EN VENEZUELA POR USO DE TECNOLOGÍAS SATÉLITALES INCLUÍA SATÉLITES CHINOS PARA DESTRUIR AVIONES EN EL AIRE CON PULSOS ELECTRO MAGNÉTICOS.

AHORA LES PREGUNTAMOS A LOS PERIODISTAS POR QUE TENIENDO SATELITES DESDE LOS QUE SE OBSERVAN HABITANTES EN SUS ACTIVIDADES DE TRABAJO CON LOS QUE SE IRRADIAN A PERSONAS, TIPO RADAR, TENEMOS AVIONES ESTRELLANDO SE EN TORRES.

POR QUE USTED AL OBSERVAR LOS VECTORES DE VUELOS EN ESTAS AGENCIAS LOS QUE TENÍAN QUE HACER ES DISPAR ARLES PULSOS ELECTROMAGNÉTICOS.

EN LAS LAMINAS DE LAS TURBINAS PARA QUE LAS TURBINAS FALLARAN O PRODUCIRLES PEQUEÑOS CAMPOS EN ESTOS MOTORES DE MANERA QUE EL AVIÓN GIRARA A UN VECTOR DE VUELO SEGURO.
EN VENEZUELA CHA VEZ COMPRO ESTAS TECNOLOGÍAS Y LAS UTILIZAN PARA ASESINAR HABITANTES.

PERO COMO SOMOS INGENIEROS EN TELECOMUNICACION TODOS SABEMOS QUE SE NECESITA IMPEDANCIA PARA QUE CUALQUIER CAMPO BIOELECTRICO LLEGUE A EL ESPACION COMO CON NANOCOMPUTADORAS.

I kissed my way up to VP at a health insurance company. Now I take over $600,000 of your health care dollars for NO VALUE ADDED to your health care. And that’s just me. Now think about how many other VPs, Directors, Managers, etc. are at my company alone. Now multiply that by thousands of others at hundreds of other health insurance companies. From 10 to 25% of your health care dollars go towards administration that adds NO VALUE to your health care. But my company’s PAC dollars will continue to fool you little people into thinking that a single payer system will be bad. Little people like you are so easy to fool. Little people also don’t realize that a single payer system is the ONLY system that would allow little people (as an entire country) to negotiate better health care prices. Little people don’t realize that the Medical Cartels already know that. And that is the reason why the Medical Cartels spend so much PAC money from the hospitals and doctors lobbying against a single payer system. Some little people say that a single payer system would cost you little people more. But if that were true, then wouldn’t the hospitals and doctors WANT that extra money? Yes they would. So why do the Medical Cartels lobby against a single payer system? It’s because the Medical Cartels know it would allow little people to negotiate better health care prices. And that’s what the Medical Cartels are afraid of. Period.
But us big wigs at insurance companies, hospitals, and pharmacy companies don’t ever need to worry about health care no matter what it costs. We get our health care paid for one way or another by you little people. And we get the little people that work at our companies to contribute to our PACs. And us big wigs say it’s to protect the little peoples’ jobs. But in reality it would be in the little peoples’ best interest to NOT contribute to the PAC. Again, little people are so easily fooled. I won’t ever have to worry about losing my job with so many little people being brain washed by the Medical Cartels’ PAC money. Not only that, the Medical Cartels’ PAC money is used to elect so many republicans that will never allow a single payer system. Republicans have always fought against any meaningful health care reform. But that’s what our Medical Cartels’ PACs pay them for. Politicians can be bought so easily.
Pretty soon the only people that will be able to afford health care is us big wigs. And that’s the way it should be. We don’t want you little people using up the resources when we need them. And once again, I thank you little people for capping my SS tax at the $113,700 level. Now I only pay 1.2% SS tax and you little people pay 6.2%. Also, thank you for extending my tax breaks. I’m using the extra money on my vacation houses.

Don't care if you are overweight, eat all the fatty fried foods and have clogged arteries.
What I do care about is not breathing cigarette smoke. Smoke all you want, not around me though.

How about placing some responsibility on the disgusting food industry supported by our government leaders. Using chemicals in the food which goes into the air and reeks havoc on the willpower of the poor.

"Men were two times more likely than women to die from heart disease and stroke." Yet all we hear about lately is RED for women's heart health. Nothing new here since all I hear about during prostate cancer awarness week is fund raising for breast cancer. Then we have to do something about suicidal women although 4 men die from suicide for every woman who does. Oh yea, althouygh men are HALF the victims of domestic violence, we have a Violence Against WOMEN Act while abused men are arressted for being abused. Oh...but men have all the power and all the privilege. Yea Right!

Just avoiding hospitals all together will keep you "from" the number three "cause of preventable death" and number one cause of "bankruptcy" in America.
It is not all that hard to figure out, there is so much money in the medical industry, they totally waste more every year than the Pentagon budget, and 200,000 to 400,000 die from errors, and likely just as many are permanently crippled from errors, all very profitable..
