Your brain on food: Obesity, fasting and addiction

We all know that what you eat can change your physical appearance. It also alters how your body functions, making it more or less difficult to pump blood, grow healthy bones or process insulin.

New research presented this week at the Neuroscience 2012 conference suggests that what you eat can even alter your brain – and vice versa.

Timothy Verstynen and his colleagues used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to observe the brain activity in 29 adults. The study participants were shown words on a screen in various colors and asked to identify the color, not the word. Sometimes it was easy – the word red printed in red; other times it was harder, like seeing the word red printed in blue.

The overweight and obese participants’ brains showed more activity during difficult questions, suggesting they were working harder to get the same answers.
Verstynen said the results imply that obese people are less efficient at making complex decisions, which could be important for controlling impulse behavior.

His team theorizes that unhealthy eating choices can lead to disrupted brain connections that lead to weakened brain performance, which can lead to making more unhealthy choices.

In other words, it's a vicious cycle.

A second study, presented by Dr. Tony Goldstone, showed the brain’s orbitfrontal cortex may play a big role in how people make food choices. This area encodes the “value” of a food, Goldstone said – i.e. how rewarding or pleasurable it will be to eat.

Study participants were asked to fast overnight. In the morning they were given a breakfast of about 700 calories and shown photos of food while hooked up to an MRI machine. They were asked to fast again before another visit; the following morning they were not given breakfast and then shown the same photos.

The starving participants’ orbitfrontal cortex’s were activated when they were shown photos of high-calorie food. Their reaction was less strong after they had eaten breakfast.

The research suggests fasting or dieting increases the brain’s desire for high-calorie food.

“That’s one of the reasons it’s so difficult to keep weight off,” Goldstone said.

The good news is that research is ongoing to find ways to block our brains’ love of unhealthy food. Two studies presented at the conference analyzed the effect of medications designed to treat alcohol/drug addiction on rats’ eating behaviors.

In one, researchers injected the addiction drug naltrexone into the prefrontal cortex – the decision-making area of the brain – to decrease junk food consumption in binge-eating rodents. The drug worked in the study, but more research is needed to see if and how this could apply to humans.

    Fat kids will be fat adults. Fat parents raise fat kids. Fat parents eat huge portions of empty calories like soft drinks, and fried foods. Fat adults were usually fat kids. Start educating kids again, like we did in the 50's and 60's, to understand the necessity of good nutrition. Oh, wait, the GOP hates education. Never mind. I bet there are more fat republicans than there are fat democrats!

      Not all fried food is empty calorie. I eat at least 3 fried eggs daily and that is probably the perfect food. Eggs fried in coconut oil or bacon grease is great.

      It occurred to me some years ago that conservatives–generally speaking–are intellectually lazy. For what ever reason, most of them do not seem wired to want to spend too much effort thinking. I believe that's why they gravitate towards religion–because with it, someone else has done all the thinking for them and they can just swallow it whole. But recently, it has occurred to me that conservatives are not just intellectually lazy, but lazy period. They would rather ignore a problem like global warming than alter their lives even the slightest. They disdain science because science is hard, they don't understand it (maybe can't, is a better word), and because it often suggests things that require thinking and commitment–like changing your dysfunctional diet so that you are not 100lbs overweight. Conservatives would rather criticize the "nanny state" or poo poo nutrition. They loved the Atkin's diet because it said they could eat whatever they wanted. That's what they are all about–zero effort or thinking. Why bother to try to understand evolution when you can just associate with other like-minded individuals who willfully ignore all science because understanding it is probably not within their grasp.

It's amazing how a group that prides itself on non discriminatory behavior is always so quick to generate broad generalizations about a group of people because they disagree with your priorities. Intellectually lazy? You are the one who is lazy, too lazy to read up on the facts of the Republican party and what they believe, the history of their leaders, and the legislation they have supported. For one, not all Republicans agree on global warming, and despite what Gore says, there is NOT definitive proof that our planet is warming, yet alone warming due to human industrialization. Look up the facts, sir. The data that was used to suggest global warming rested on the years from 1980-1996 (not positive on the 96, but it was around that year), the last 16 years have shown ZERO warming. Secondly, we don't know if we have any actual ability to control climate change, so some Republicans (and Democrats) are worried about investing too much money in things we can not control, things that we don't know the future effects of, and in a time we are faced will trillion dollar deficits. You prioritize climate control over the economy? It's not so black and white, as much as people want to ensure the Earth remains clean and habitable in the next century, we want to put bread on our tables today.

    The number of participants is too little, and the conclusion was drawn to quickly. What about a third variable? Or just a coincidence? 29 participants is not enough data to make such a strong claim.

      The article says the obese participants brains were more active. How did they do with the task? If they were just as fast/correct as the other subjects (which I suspect by the non-reporting of it), I would conclude that this in-efficiency is more likely due to availability of resources and not a problem. If the brain has lots of fuel (calories) to burn it need not be economical with them.

    How about changing the farm bill and other coporate backed government controls that lead to plentiful amounts of cheap heavily processed nutrionally void food that require synthetic nutrients added to them. Obesity is not a disease it's a choice made very easy by our culture. How about supporting smaller farms growing a wide variety of healthy foods/animals instead of vast fields of GMO corn and soybeans. Just another oppurtunity for Big Pharmacuetical to rip off the US Consumer. Don't use willpower, take a pill and give us all your money. What a joke.

    Lack of animal fat and consuming carbs are the fat makers. Animal fat is needed to metabolize vitamins A, D, E and K. Also needed to metabolize calcium. Carbs are responsible for fatty live diabetes and other common ailments. Fat does not cause heart disease.

    Of course they have a higher desire for high calorie food. They would have a desire for food with a high caloric intake or not without any pictures to remind them that they should be eating now. This study is inconsequential. The author was on an interesting track with the orbitfrontal cortex and obese people thinking less efficiently but curtailed it to something meaningless.

      Did you read the article or understand the comment? This is not about being obese and making poor judgments. It's about the kinds of foods you eat which alters the activity of the brain. Ever heard the phrase "garbage in garbage out"? When people make poor food choices consistently (usually those with weight issues), the consequences are that the unhealthy food will affect their brain function. Not to the point of becoming incapable of making rational decisions, but making it more difficult as a result of polluting your body and brain with sh**y food.
      This should be a wake up call to people who make bad food choices. Not only does it affect your physical well-being, but it can also diminish your brains ability to function at an optimal level.

      Kebkeb, don't be so sensitive to comments or studies that points out the obvious. Bad diets will negatively affect people in more ways than just weight. It's not a slight against obese people. Grow up and grab a salad!!

Did you know, it is also a fact that the states with the lowest average IQ also have the highest obesity rates? Sorry the truth hurts, but I think society should be moving past coddling the obese and straight up telling them to do something about it.

      How nice that you have a choice of what to eat – many people don't, and particularly those on welfare. Poorer people have less choice; they eat what they can afford. Junk food is cheaper than buying real food. For the price of a couple of apples you can get a fast food meal, and for the price of a bottle of juice you can buy 3 times as much soda. Areas where there is a high population of poorer people often don't even have grocery stores. They have a lot of convenience stores and fast food outlets. Don't judge based on your priviledged position. Your comments assume that everyone has access to the things you take for granted.

      Eating a healthy diet depends on your ability to pay for the food, get to the food and having the knowledge, time and equipment to prepare it. A lot of lower income people are working two or even three jobs just to pay the bills; they don't have time to cook, assuming they even know how. They don't have the time to find a grocery store to buy healthy food. Those on welfare are often stuck because the rules actually prohibit you from finding a job, or going to school to better your chance of finding one. Take a look at what a family of 4 gets in welfare payments. Work out a budget and you will very quickly find that there is very little left after paying the rent. Certainly not enough for a car, or even public transportation.

      Imagine that you live in a run down apartment, with no amenities (like glass in the windows or heat), and it costs you 75% of your income. You may have a kitchen but there may not be a refridgerator, and there are no pots and pans – they're too expensive. You live there because you have no choice. It was the cheapest place you could find. Your income is low because you don't have the skills or knowledge to get a better job, or even get a job of any kind. It's not that you are stupid, or lazy. Your school was not able to give you a good education because there was no money for textbooks, or to pay good teachers. Your parents were not able to help you because they had the same barriers. You may also be sick because there is no money for doctors. If you are injured you just have to live with it.

      That's the reality that some people face every day. Most are depressed and who wouldn't be when every day is a struggle and there is no hope to improve it. The ability to choose is a luxury that many just can't afford. Oh, and I'm not talking about a few people here. The latest figures show that over 46 million people in the US live below the poverty line. Whle you look up the numbers look at how low that poverty line is. Folks who have double that income are still not able to afford choices.

    I love how the solution is a drug... how about the will power to change your eating habits. That's all you need. I have never been overweight or obese, but I did have an extremely unhealthy diet and wanted to make a change as diabetes and stroke run in my family. I ate fast food almost every day (loved white castles and long john silvers) and ice cream every night, with plenty of diet pop to wash it all down! Today, I've totally retrained myself on what to eat and it's retrained my palette. None of that stuff is even appetizing anymore. No fast food (seriously), lots of veggies and fruit. No pop, just water or unsweetened tea. I went the extra step of cutting out dairy too. It was definitely hard, I definitely had to fight cravings, but it's been two years now and I can say I'm "cured" of the modern western diet addiction. No one needs a drug to do it.

      Good for you Natalie, it's not that hard to believe, trust me! I too struggled with cravings and used to eat mcdonalds at least once a day. I gained about 40lbs because I didn't exercise and managed to polish off a tub of ice cream every few days. Over the last year I've lost it and look better than ever, and I continue to go to the gym every day, it's become a passion of mine. Meanwhile my fat colleagues tell me I'm "obsessed" with going to the gym and I don't need to lose weight. It's pretty obvious why they are the way they are... they are afraid admit they are unhappy with themselves and refuse to leave their comfort zones.

    Chicken and egg- I think it's probable that the obese participants in the study had a lower IQ, thus had difficulty processing the information. I believe we already have data that suggests, in general, lower IQ correlates to higher rates of obesity. Not that you can't be obese and smart, but rather that it is probably easier to make healthier choices the higher your IQ is.

      Is it that they don't have the $$$ to buy "healthy" food? Or are they just too dumb to budget accordingly. You know how many idiots I work with who claim it's too expensive to eat healthy, but they have new iphones/ipads and spend hundreds from every paycheck on drinking?
      My boyfriend and I both make about 40k each... yet, I don't own a car, and he drives an old mazda which he paid $2000 for. We pull up to our favourite store, Planet Organic, but it isn't for their organic vegetables. We come out with $200-300 worth of grass fed beef and chicken! The people at the store look at us like we're carnivores. No, we just like to stock up on good quality meat. When I drive past mcdonalds, theres always a lineup of expensive cars, usually massive SUV's in the drive-thru. This tells me two things: 1) they HAVE the money, and 2) they are too lazy to get out of their car and go inside.
      I'll NEVER feel sorry for you if you're fat.

    Ancient Vedantic knowledge tells us that food has a direct relationship with the mind. Food we eat to a considerable extent dictates the type of thoughts we generate, the quality of our mind. Eat vegetarian when you can. It not only involves no killing but also is healthy for our body and mind.

    boggles the mind... we have a WAR on recreational drugs (and in the case of ganja even medicinal) but we have a big pharma industry that wants to solve all our problems with drugs... even if they kill sometimes........ and people lap it up like candy..... the disconnect here is just impossible to understand

    Great, just what we need, more justification for the obese to continue on their self destructive paths. All it takes is a bit of willpower. I have a very obese friend and he has "always" been that way. His wife gave birth to his daughter within the last year, and shortly after he suddenly decided that he doesn't want to be obese anymore. He quit fast food cold turkey and has replaced the old crap with healthy, balanced meals with plenty of green vegetables. He just told me that he can see his p3nis for the first time ever lol. He's always been a funny guy but this time he was serious.

    I wish that every obese person could just take some initiative for their problem. Everybody struggles with crap in life, and making excuses is never going to get you ahead. What good is blaming someone/something else for your condition? Does it make you healthy? Does it make the problem go away? The only person that can be accountable for you is YOU. So don't complain about your situation unless you intend to do something about it yourself. Making excuses only makes you sound like a complete fool. Except, of course, to other like minded individuals.

    Have fun with your "quick fix" pill America. Always looking for an easy way out or that magic solution.

    How about looking inward for the answer instead?

    I believe the forbidden fruit in the, so called, garden of eden, was actually, a calorie; one lousey stinkin' calorie. Our spiritual consciousness doesn't need food. In fact, if you back up, I mean way, way back and follow every morsle of food or substance, we have consumed, to become the hidious creatures we are today, called "Humans".     Eat to live, don't live to eat. Learn to not constantly crave food.

    I lost about 50 pounds by simply reducing my caloric intake to around 1200 calories a day or so. It was hard at first, I was constantly rummaging around cupboards looking for junk food (I purposely made sure I had none) to satisfy my ravenous cravings. Eventually my body adapted and the weight melted away.

    I didn't do any special, complicated diet like Adkins, or go vegetarian, or caveman, or whatever. I just simply ate less food. Heck, I didn't even really exercise.

    That's all it really takes. Oh yeah, and stop drinking soda, even diet.

    okay, those tests they are talking about with naltrexone has been tested on humans and it was in relation to wheat. I'm sure these rodents ate less of this junk food because wheat connects to our morphine receptors in our brain. So the same applied to these people when half had been injected with naltrexone and the other half had not. The half that had not had the injection ate 2 times the amount of food. And the food placed in front of them was wheat based products.

    We can't have a serious discussion about personal health without also talking about technology. Of course things like diet and exercise are as important as ever, but we also now have to consider our technological habits and the effects that those habits have on our health. How much TV we watch every day, how many hours we spend sitting in front of our computers, how often we drive short distances instead of walking... these things have a huge effect on our health. We can't solve our health problems without thinking seriously about the role of technology in our lives.

    Wow, the hatred towards fat people here is amazing. I have struggled with my weight my entire adult life. I rarely eat fast food, rarely eat ice cram, and don't buy junk food. I mostly buy all natural, organic foods and limit how much processed foods i eat. My best friend, who is skinny as can be, eats chips, Taco Bell, and junk food every day. I get so hurt that people automatically assume that just because I'm overweight I must be a pig and eat nothing but junk. I DON'T!!!! But I do have a terrible metabolism. Stop judging people by outward appearance. You don't know the struggles they may have to deal with everyday.

    I am still appalled by the number of people who claim that poverty is the reason they are obese. Ordering that fast food burger is a choice – and they can still make other choices, they just choose not to because it is more difficult. It is poverty and poor work ethic combined, at the very least. And the corporations have played on this so that some people have no food stores within their walking distance and no car.. it is becoming a cycle spurred by where people spend their dollars. I have seen the healthiest families with the smallest amount of money put things in their carts that take time to prepare and will have to be preserved (also taking time) for the future. In the next lane is a family putting up everything 'quick and easy', bottles of soda, prewrapped treats ... they are not making time to prepare food so they are getting substandard food, empty calories, vitamins through pills if at all, and their bodies show it. I know with two parents working and our modern lifestyle it can be tough to drag oneself away from the TV after eight to ten hours of work to boil rice or cook a roast or cut up surplus vegetables and put them in the freezer.. Their parents might not even know how to do this anymore to teach them – it is starting to become a specialty skill instead of common knowledge. Let alone for these people to think about growing any food – they probably live in a small apartment in the city with no yard, and that is also sad because it takes a lot of their control away and makes them seek the most time efficient and space efficient foods, which are not the healthiest. Looking to the future, preserving and growing were what kept our ancestors alive – not the microwave meal, now with added vitamins.
