Hidden dangers in vitamins, supplements?

Vitamins and supplements could do more harm than good in some cases, according to a new report in Consumer Reports.

The report, in Consumer Reports' September issue, investigates 10 unknown dangers associated with taking vitamins, minerals, herbs, and nutritional supplements. More than half of all Americans take supplements, and the supplement industry has grown to a $27 billion industry.

But supplements aren't necessarily risk-free, according to Dr. Jose Mosquera, medical adviser for Consumer Reports. While patients may believe supplements are safe because they are natural, he says not all supplements are truly all-natural.

Between 2007 and mid-April 2012, the Food and Drug Administration received more than 6,300 reports of serious adverse events linked to dietary supplements, including vitamins and herbs, according to Consumer Reports. The reports include 115 deaths and more than 2,100 hospitalizations.

Supplements should only be taken when there is a true deficiency, Mosquera says, and people should talk to their doctors before starting a supplement.

“Supplements and vitamins should never be a substitute for a healthy lifestyle with a nutritional plan,” he says. He adds that it’s better to get vitamins from healthy eating than from taking supplements.

The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), an association representing dietary supplement manufacturers, counters, “There is a strong body of scientific evidence that supports the benefits of dietary supplements and these products have a very strong profile for safety.”

However, Consumer Reports says some supposedly natural products are laced with the same active ingredients in prescription drugs, and people often experience unwanted side effects while taking the supplements.

The supplements for body building, enhancing sexual performance, and losing weight are the most likely to be laced, says Mosquera. He advises, “Protect yourself by trying to avoid these types of supplements, and have a conversation with your doctor about lifestyle changes.”

The high doses of vitamins and minerals in some supplements present another danger. People that take more than 100% of the recommended daily intake of a nutrient could have adverse reactions.

Existing laws make it difficult for the FDA to regulate problematic supplements, according to the report. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994, most manufacturers don’t need FDA approval to sell dietary supplements, and the FDA must prove a supplement is unsafe before taking it off the market.

The report also cautions that the FDA doesn’t require supplements to have warning labels unless they contain iron. For example, some products with St. John’s Wort don’t warn that it is known to reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills and blood thinners.

No supplement has been shown to cure a major disease, says the report. New evidence shows that even Omega-3 pills, widely believed to reduce the risk of heart disease, may not be as effective as once thought.

More than 150 million Americans take dietary supplements each year, the Council for Responsible Nutrition notes.

"Consumers need to be savvy and buy from companies with strong brand reputations or look for those that have third party certification on their labels," the council says. "It is also important for consumers to talk to their health care professionals and understand that dietary supplements are intended to supplement a healthy diet and do not serve as substitutes for drugs."

    I don't trust much of what the FDA says any more. They allow cancer causing foods, drugs, and cigarettes on the market when big money is at stake from corporations. The RDA also needs to be reevaluated. Consumers need to do their own research since we have the technology to do that and read labels. It's true no supplement can cure disease but it seems neither can the FDA or anyone associated with the drug companies. Only a combination of certain organic foods and herbs can do that. Real food have the greatest results and supplements supplement.

    This is in response to Dr. Gupta's video about the inverted CT scan in the O.R. Can't the manufacturers of the CT scanners simply re-program the machines to print the words CAN YOU READ ME on the bottom of every scan. That way, if the scan is displayed upside down it will be very very obvious. (And it is just a matter of re-programming.)

    likely big pharma is behind these so called consumer reports. FDA has failed to control prescription drugs side effects and continue to propose aberrations like Red 40 ( a known carcinogen among many more) for food use. This double standard endangers the consumer rather than protect him. Vitamin supplementation is a necessary manner to fulfill unsatisfied biochemical needs due to erratic eating patterns, lack of sunlight, and deficient production and other. Further, to state that omega 3 fatty acids are really not so good should send these opinion makers back to school. There is an enormous amount of scientific data proving the opposite. How disappointing. Just choose a reliable manufacturer, get information and supplement your deficiencies. Do not be bullied by greed and disinformation.

      Big "Pharma" owns most of the supplement/vitamin business. Also, most individuals are not educated enough to understand reactions and side effect. Rely on your personal physician to help you decide if you need a supplement.

      Ask your doctor how many courses he/she took in nutrition? Many have had only one course many years ago and since many are very busy, learning about nutrition drops to the bottom of the list of things to do. You are on your own when it comes to supplements and medicine. Best place is to go to the National Library of Medicine and looks up your supplements and see if there is any drug interaction.

      Couldn't disagree more. First, the article references Consumer Reports, not consumer reports. Consumer Reports is a subscription magazine that rates products in hundreds of fields, from automobiles to electronics, supplements to yard tools. They are known for rigorous testing and exceptionally objective rating of products and have been around for many years. If you read it in Consumer Reports, I'd say it's worth listening to. Secondly, the author of this article is correct in her assertion that supplements should be taken only in the case of a true deficiency. Most individuals should obtain an adequate amount of ALL vitamins and minerals from a healthy, balanced diet. The problem is that the overwhelming majority of American's DO NOT in fact eat a healthy, balanced diet. Lastly, the assertion that one is "being bullied" away from supplements is a joke. If you're concerned about getting an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals in your diet, schedule a visit with your doctor to discuss the issue. If they don't have the answer they can refer you to a nutritionist who certainly does, rather than sorting through the majority of information on the internet which sadly to say falls into the category of incomplete, misleading, or outright lies.

      You are right omega 3 and 6 are very good HOWEVER fish oil is NOT good. Cold pressed organic 3 and 6 oils from plants like sunflower and coconut are what is good.

      Most people wouldn't take a medication without talking with an expert – aka pharmacist or MD. We need to regulate and appreciate the knowledge that Naturopathic Doctors have when it comes to nutrition, lifestyle, and herbs/supplements. With expert advice that is based on the individual, the low risk of side effects from supplements is reduced to almost nil and the benefits are enhanced. Yes, first "let food be thy medicine", but when needed, consult an educated professional and supplement if necessary.

    This article is complete non-sense right from the start... "More than half of Americans take supplements", ok so let's say 60% equals the "more than half". According to Google the population of the USA is 311,591,917 (we all know its more than that with invaders living here). Our first equation – 311,591,917 x 60% = 186,955,150 roughly...

    Now out of those the article states, "6,300 reports of serious adverse events linked to dietary supplements".

    6300 as a percentage of 186,955,150 is 0.00336%

    Hmmmmm... I will take my chances and continue to not listen to the corrupt FDA. Come on CNN, Forks Over Knives!!!!

    Nope, no surprises in this article. I been trying to tell the people in my gym that weight lifting supplements destroy kidneys. I'm no match for the advertising teams promoting them though.

      There is some truth to what is written in this article. Yes, weight lifting supplements can do more harm then good. But there are supplements out there are actually helping people. You have to do your homework and find the right ones... and you probably will not find them in a general store. I believe everyone should take supplements... our food is not grown like it was when our grandparents were young. Vitamins and minerals are missing in everyone's foods (except if you grow your own and know your soil's makeup). More then half of the American population are taking supplements... but only few are taking quality supplements! Here is a book that you can use when you are looking at taking vitamins, "Nutrisearch Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements" by Lyle MacWilliams, MSc, FP. It compares over 1600 different vitamin companies and products. Do your own research and see what you find!

      Same thing came to my mind initially. Reports show that about 150 die Each YEAR from just plain food allergies. A far cry from the 150 that could potentially be attributed to supplements over a 6 year period.

    The main culprit here are weight loss, sexual enhancement, and body building drugs. Every month dozens of these are pulled off the market because they contain pharmaceutical ingredients banned in the US, but since the FDA doesn't have the authority to regulate and test dietary supplements BEFORE they go on the market the manufacturers of this drugs just replace the recalled bottles, with new verision that just have slightly different labelling. Alot of these tainted products come from china. To be safe buy reliable brands and look for USP Verified supplements. If you buy some werid x-brand diet drug there is a good chance getting some kind of amphetamine that could damage your heart. And if its some strange weight lifting drug, then it could be laced with steriods. The basic vitamins like Vitamin C, E, CO-Q10 are usually safe.

    I am so thankful that every one of these comments is calling this article out for what it is – a BUNCH OF LIES!

    I take turmeric, CoQ 10 daily. I have terrible, painful migraines and TMJ and I when I keep up with the supplements my inflammation decreases and my inflammation subsides and my pain decreases. It totally feel it when I miss even a couple of days.

    It scares me to think that I could lose the choice to take my vitamins!

    It appears the "body building, weight loss and sex booster" supps make up the bulk of the problem...

    It's unfortunate that doctors use these bad apples to claim the entire supplement industry is dangerous. That's like saying because chiropractors sometimes make misleading claims, this shows the entire medical profession is flawed and dangerous.

    If there are problem areas in the supplement industry, lets work on these problems and quit tarnishing an entire industry that many (including many doctors) feel may be contributing to good health.

    according to the FDA's own website, there were 673,259 "adverse events" reported from the use of prescription drugs in 2010 alone. The number of adverse events reported from prescription drug use between 2006 and 2010 (which is the most up to date info) is 2,980,324, and the total number of prescription drug related deaths was 270,827. To add one more point to this, 64% of the prescription drugs taken in the world are taken by Americans and we represent only 5% of the worlds population. Maybe CR should write an article on something that is relavent like which blender makes the best shake, that is more their speed.

    This article states that "No supplement has been shown to cure a major disease"...that is because big pharma has pressured legislators to pass a law that states only prescription drugs can claim to "cure" any health condition. Therefore a supplement can never state that it can cure a disease without breaking the law; even though many supplements have done so...     I remember reading an article a few years ago that stated the printed labels on vitamins and supplements had more regulation than the contents of the supplements themselves. Meaning, outlandish, unproven claims were not legal, but if a manufacturer includes lead in their black cohosh, they are able to do so. Your average consumer has no real way of knowing what is in these supplements.

Take diffeerent health pills in moderations.....Like they say with the latest news...no exercise is like smoking a cigarett.....try your best to do some exercise........pay some one to work with you..

    It would be interesting to see the statistics on the complications, hospitalizations and death rates for pharmaceuticals. Somehow I think they are significantly greater. All you have to do is listen to the list of side effects they list in every commercial for prescription drugs. Consumer Reports did a test of the ingredients in many brands of vitamins for accuracy. Puritan's were shown to be accurate. They are also very cost effective.

    Here we go again , another notable government agency driven by medical science are presenting things as facts,when actually they are are not presenting a fact at all. It's only an opinion.Lets look at some samples of " medical facts " that have been proven to be wrong : 1. Eggs were considered bad due to cholesterol ,research says eggs not bad at all. 2.Margarine healthier than butter,research now says no. 3. Baby formula better than milk for babies/Now the opposite is true. Or how about the old adage once used,medical science stated that diet had no effect on diseases or illness,contrary were told diet has huge effect on diseases and illness. Drug & Pharamecutical companies see the population trending towards the intake Vitamins,supplements and minerals. Hence,the new vitamin formulas that proport : time release vitamins, quicker absoprtion technology,or pharmecutical grades, better blending techniques. Fact is certain government agencies have approved 1000's of drugs, procedures ,etc.becuase they were scientifically proven to cure or prevent disease and deemed safe. Then years later removed form market as unsafe or id not cure. Medical community and Certain approving agencies approved ,'facts, which turned out not to be factual. In th end the facts were really just current theories or thoughts for the moment. In conclusion vitamins and minerals are essentails for life. It is evident that most of us do not get these vitamins from food,or water.Reasons are simple, food production ,handling,shelf life dimnish the majority of the vitamins and minerals,therefore we consume three times as much food , because were nutrionally hungry. Our food supply is completely different than it was 25-50 years ago.The products and brand names as we knew them are not the same as they once were. Fact is majority of food is loaded with chemcials,preservatives,toxins and vitamin mineral content is low,low.       For someone besmirching others' facts, you don't have many correct facts yourself. 1000s of approved procedures and drugs removed? Where can I see the list? Eggs not bad at all? Like any high cholesterol food, should be eaten in moderation. Tub margarine IS healthier than butter. Majority of food is loaded with chemical, preservatives, and toxins? Where did you get that "fact" or do you just "know" it is true? Or hope it is true? How is it evident that most of us do not get the vitamins and minerals that we need? If everyone takes a blood test as you recommend, very few will have vitamin and mineral deficiencies. If they do, that is what supplements should be used for. (Despite what you "know", the average diet in this country is very good.) As for the recalls: Approval decisions are made on the latest data, and sometimes more data comes in, often after the product goes into general use, because you can't really do the test on millions of human subjects which is what going into general use really is. You just don't know if the results of a few hundred or thousand will pick up adverse effect of one in a thousand. Would you prefer to withhold approval of new drugs/foods until they have been tested on a million people?

    Simply "Ask your doctor" is probably the most stupid thing you can do! Very very primary care physicians know squat about supplements. Oh, they can tell you about drug interaction etc..but more than that, they have had no training in the use or benefits (or downside) of supplements. Most MD's deal with prescription drugs and other health matters. Ask a nutritionist, who is far better informed in these matters. Ironically,
    these natural supplements are sometimes just as effective as prescription drugs because their chemical ingredients are almost the same.

    The only natural vitamins are those in food, the pills are mostly synthetic. There have been # of studies showing that vitamin and mineral supplementation can have harmful effects. JAMA 2007, Vol 297, pages 842-857 showed Vitamin A supplementation increased death risk by 16%, beta carotene by 7%, and Vitamin E by 4%. Results for Vit C were not clear. ATBC trials reported in JAMA 2003:290:476 showed showed 7% higher mortality in in smokers receiving beta-carotene. SELECT study reported in Cancer Prevention Research 2012 showed showed higher prostate cancer with vitamin E supplements. Taking supplements allows people to take synthetic substances in much higher doses than you could typically get from natural vitamins/minerals in food. People live much longer today than 100 years ago and we have access year around to healthier food that they could have only imagined. Sellers of supplements have to cause anxiety about
    supposed deficiencies as a marketing techniques.

    For the record, the statement “New evidence shows that even Omega-3 pills, widely believed to reduce the risk of heart disease, may not be as effective as once thought” is even more misleading than what was reported in the original CR article. That article reported “The widely held view that fish-oil pills help prevent cardiovascular disease hit a snag…” That statement was based on one FLAWED study. Thus said, the information is inaccurate given the totality of the publicly available scientific evidence demonstrating the cardiovascular benefits of EPA and DHA in healthy populations, as well as in the majority of populations with pre-existing cardiovascular ailments. Consider that the list of long-chain O-3 recommendations from professional scientific organizations and governments continues to grow because the cardiovascular benefits associated with EPA and DHA are so compelling.

    5 years of lipitor that started at 10 mg and ended at 80 because it didn't work for me. I started getting the headaches within 2 weeks of beginning. The headaches got progressively worse until they were almost every day and so severe I vomited. 4 doctors including 1 ER visit with a CAT scan, because it was thought I was having a stroke and none of those doctors even hinted at the lipitor being the cause. My internist prescribed a migraine med. Also said my thyroid level was low and prescribed synthroid. One morning I woke up (literally) and decided to stop the meds. Within a week the headaches subsided and now 2 years later my headaches are completely gone. My internist told me she never thought the lipitor was the cause. The synthroid caused me many sleepless nights. I am 60 years old and since I have stopped taking it, I sleep through the night.
    My father was diagnosed with high cholesterol in the 50s and was told to eat margarine and stay away from butter. He took no meds. Always had high cholesterol and died at 80. Things have come full circle on that front.
    I take some supplements and have had NO adverse effects.
    I believe this is all about BIG PHARMA wanting a bigger share of the pie, like their share isn't big enough.

      Cookiepress, the first thing I would do is FIRE your internist. Headaches and muscle aches are very common side effects of statin drugs like Lipitor. How can one say they don't "think" it's the cause of your symptom? That's a doctor that doesn't want to deal with the side effects because they don't have time to work with you or they don't want to admit that Lipitor is a big mistake for MOST people. I wonder if she's getting incentives from the pharmaceutical company for prescribing statins.

    Tell Dr Mosquera to consult a board certified naturopathic physician about something he has little knowledge about. Reductionistic medicine has caused more deaths and perpetuated illness for the last 100 plus years. The fact that it has failed in health recovery, has people seeking other answers. Why not let the ND's practice under licensure in all 50 states. The defecit of the national debt would greatly be decreased due to reduced health care costs. I am no longer diabetic, hypertensive overweight and don't have clotting issues because of my ND, not my former MD. I have been an RN over 25yrs and the results I've seen boggle my mind.

    So you say Vitamins don't Work...Well! I followed my doctors advice for 10 years and had the following issues, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Diabetic and had gone from 225lbs to 278lbs, My Doctor had me on 6 different medications. So! One year ago I chose to change my life and got back to a Vitamin program that is Organic Based. I have lost 64lbs and I am "No Longer on ANY" and I repeat "No Longer on ANY" Medications. Don't Tell Me the Proper Vitamins and Minerals Don't Work. The Drug Companies OWN the FDA and when the FDA remember when they work for the People of the United States of America they may regain my trust until the Shut Up. Gary Larivee

    There is a great resource for health care professionals called Natural Standard (www.naturalstandard.com). This research collaboration looks at the evidence behind vitamins, supplements, herbals, and other complementary and alternative medicine and then assigns a grade based on the amount of scientific evidence supporting a specific effect or health claim. It is a great resource to get unbiased information on products that are not heavily regulated in the US like prescription drugs. While this information is invaluable there also needs to be a push for manufacturers of these products to use good manufacturing practices so that the products they are selling to the public are uncontaminated and reliable.

      Wow, I think all the vitamin damage I'm sustaining from eating my vegetables is finally damaging my mental capacity. Should be "155,800,000" (half the US population)...still can't believe .004% rate of reported incidents. Simply terrifying.

    "No supplement has been shown to cure a major disease." Then why are they putting fluoride in my water? Fluoride must be a food supplement and not medicine because it is not a pharmacist fluoridating my water at the direction of a doctor under prescription–rather it is against my consent. A child that is losing baby teeth and has adult teeth coming in should be taking fluoride in a controlled dose as a supplement–the rest of us get enough in our toothpaste and mouthwash. All medicines have side-effects; it makes no sense to force pregnant women to intake fluoride when we have no idea what those side effects are. Why force a small developing child with baby teeth to intake fluoride?–home water filters do not remove fluoride and bottled water is not required to disclose that it contains fluoride–if it is filtered from a municipal water supply then it is likely fluoridated. My teeth are done growing so I want fluoride out of my diet–but it is impossible to avoid. No way to know if it is harmful because people move around and those that grew up on well water end up in a city. One of the current medical mysteries is the cause of Parkinsons disease–100 years ago we did not see people in their 40's getting Parkinsons the way we do now–industrialization is blamed; maybe we should blame fluoride? No way to know, but I should not have this medical treatment forced upon me without my consent. Whats wrong with distribution of fluoride supplements in the elementary school program if you are worried about poverty-stricken kids getting it?–why put it in the water so there is no way to control the dose?–kids that drink too much water are getting too much fluoride. Governments priority should be to provide us with pure water–let us choose our own medical treatments.

    I am a nutritionist. I believed in food supplements, but all the recent studies prove that they do not work or that they dangerous for our health (premature death, cancer, cardiovascular disease). People do not need to take vitamins in a pill. Human beings evolved to take vitamins with their food. Societies who live long like Okinawa do not take vitamins. They live longer, because they eat healthy. Buy organic foods, not supplements. Food supplements are pseudoscience. The end of the food supplements is coming.

    I know people who spend thousands of dollars on vitamin and various herbal supplements, hoping to find that miracle in the bottle, to make them stronger, younger, virile and whatever~ including my brother. He recently experienced an intra-cerebral hemorrhagic stroke. I went to his house and he is a supplement junkie. The doctors think that the multiple combinations of the "super-duper" mega doses as well as his taking ibuprophen very regularly may have attributed to the weak vessel that burst within his brain. He had neither history of H/BL pressure nor cholesterol problems. He is recuperating from the stroke, which could have been fatal. Just know that the "miracle" is ingesting real food that is healthy along with balanced meals, exercise and hydration is the REAL MIRACLE; not something that a salesperson/company is selling in a bottle. We have become a lazy society looking for quick miracle fixes. If you want real rich URINE, then the supplements might be the answer, but rely on mostly common sense, real healthy food and daily exercise.
