America's cleanest (and dirtiest!) beaches

Just when you thought it was safe to go into the water, the Natural Resources Defense Council has released its annual beach quality report and it’s not pretty.

According to NRDC, a large number of U.S. seashores continue to suffer from storm water runoff and sewage pollution that can cause swimmers to become very ill.

The report, Testing the Waters: A Guide to Water Quality at Vacation Beaches, looks at 2011 data collected from test results taken at more than 3,000 beaches nationwide. It examines the pollution factors that affect these U.S. vacation spots and calls for public efforts to clean up.

The report found that last year the nation’s beach waters continued to be affected by serious contamination and pollutants from human and animal waste. As a result, America’s beaches had the third-highest number of closings or advisories in the report’s history, with the second-highest number occurring just the year before. Progress, according to the report, is not being made.

“Our beaches are plagued by a sobering legacy of water pollution,” said NRDC senior attorney Jon Devine. “Luckily, today more than ever, we know that much of this filth is preventable and we can turn the tide against water pollution. By establishing better beach water quality standards and putting untapped 21st century solutions in place – we can make a day at the beach as carefree as it should be, and safeguard America’s vital tourism economies.”

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that more than 10 trillion gallons of untreated storm water makes its way into surface waters each year, and hundreds of billions of gallons of wastewater - which includes sewage and storm water - are released in combined sewer overflows. This water dumps into many of America’s coastal areas.

But the NRDC report is not all bleak. It includes a guide that rates the water quality and practices for testing water and administering public notifications at each beach. When a seashore exceeds the NRDC’s expectations, it receives a 5-star rating.

Beaches that rated five stars with last year’s data are:

– California: Newport Beach in Orange County (2 of 3 monitored sections)
– Newport Beach – 38th Street
– Newport Beach – 52nd/53rd Street
– California: Bolsa Chica Beach in Orange County
– California: Huntington State Beach in Orange County
– Alabama: Gulf Shores Public Beach in Baldwin County
– Alabama: Gulf State Park Pavilion in Baldwin County
– Delaware: Dewey Beach in Sussex County
– Maryland: Ocean City at Beach 6 in Worcester County
– Minnesota: Park Point Franklin Park / 13th Street South Beach Park Point in St. Louis County
– Minnesota: Lafayette Community Club Beach in St. Louis County
– New Hampshire: Hampton Beach State Park in Rockingham County
– New Hampshire: Wallis Sands Beach in Rockingham County
– Texas: South Padre Island in Cameron County

The report also noted the top 15 “Repeat Offenders” - beaches that continually have high bacteria counts. These beaches over the last five years have had persistent contamination problems, with water samples violating public health standards more than 25% of the time for each year from 2007 to 2011.

Those beaches are:

– California: Avalon Beach in Los Angeles County (3 of 5 monitored sections):
– Avalon Beach – West of Green Pleasure Pier (50 feet)
– Avalon Beach – West of Green Pleasure Pier (100 feet)
– Avalon Beach – East of Green Pleasure Pier
– California: Doheny State Beach in Orange County (3 of 6 monitored sections):
– Doheny State Beach – North of San Juan Creek
– Doheny State Beach – Surfzone at Outfall
– Doheny State Beach – 1000' South Outfall
– Illinois: Winnetka Elder Park Beach in Cook County
– Illinois: North Point Marina North Beach in Lake County
– Louisiana: Constance Beach in Cameron Parish
– Louisiana: Gulf Breeze in Cameron Parish
– Louisiana: Little Florida in Cameron Parish
– Louisiana: Long Beach in Cameron Parish
– Louisiana: Rutherford Beach in Cameron Parish
– New Jersey: Beachwood Beach West in Ocean County
– New York: Woodlawn Beach – Woodlawn Beach State Park in Erie County
– New York: Ontario Beach in Monroe County
– Ohio: Euclid State Park in Cuyahoga County
– Ohio: Villa Angela State Park in Cuyahoga County
– Wisconsin: South Shore Beach in Milwaukee County

If your favorite beach is not on either of these lists, you can go to the NRDC’s website for more information.  For the first time this year, the NRDC’s report includes a zip code searchable map of more than 3,000 beaches nationwide, making it easier than ever for users to check the water quality of their favorite sandy spot.

Every beach in America is polluted with fat people, fat children, fat dogs, fat fat fatty fat fat fattersons. Every beach has some bloated whales who think they can squeeze in to a bikini and that the rolls that they show are somehow attractive.

America – Poster child for liposuction.

Lars you cannot expect people to remain in their houses because they are fat and expect them to get skinny. It is people like you that help create the problem, leave the fat people alone. BTW you are not original when you yell, "Run Forest Run" either at the fat people trying to get exercise. I don't want people to be fat because I've seen plenty of 90 year old smokers, but I've never seen a 90 year old that weighs 350 pounds, the heart gives out at high weights.

I'd glady replace people like you with people like Richard Simmons.

Lars is an idiot. Why dont we also keep people older than 30 from the beaches since they dont really look as well as a 20 year old. And why dont we keep disabled people away from our beaches also, since disabled people cant look nearly as pretty as Lars. I can understand keeping Republicans away, at least that makes sense, since Republicans dont want to put any money toward cleaning the beaches anyway. And with a name like Lars , how cant you be a moron.

I am in support of banning fat people from beaches, and some other places too. Fat clothing should also be banned. Why on earth should society cater to people who can't even take care of their own health. There should be ZERO incentive to be fat. Society makes it too easy for people to be lazy, with all the elevators/escalators, cars, etc. If you are fat it's because of your own choices, and you are opened up for ridicule. If you dont' like it, eat properly and exercise reguarly since that is after all what your body is built for. I might sound cruel but guess what, I am just realistic. I tell fat people "good job" at the gym all the time when I see them there. But if I see them at McDonalds... I won't respect them until they respect themselves first.

Bashing fat people isn't going to help anyone. If it makes you sleep better at night, well...good for you (please read with a sarcastic tone). Humans have outsmarted themselves throughout the centuries – always finding ways to do things easier, faster, cheaper – cars, internet, fast food, junk.... heavier people have evolved due to our easy living ways. In order to afford those things which are essential to make our lives easier, we need 12 hour shifts, 7 day work weeks, home offices – it yields more money but means less time to take care of ourselves. It costs money to be healthy in this America.... it's sad that a bag of chips and a soda is cheaper than an apple and a bottle of water. Add in that heavier people are depressed about their appearance because they get bashed by people like you, and they shy away from gyms and walks in the park and end up turning to comforting carbs and sugary foods as a crutch. People like you aren't helping to fix the problem; you're making it worse. Maybe you're lucky enough to come from a line of people with good genes, rail thin minimal body fat types, but I sure hope you remember your cruel words when someone close to you, whom you care and love, is ridiculed for being fat. Let's see if you change your tune.

I was born and raised in San Diego, last year my brother weighed 278 lbs being 5'9 he didn't look good in anyway shape or form, I was 240 but being 6'2 I got away with it a little bit better, but living in a beach town we both knew we had to do something about our weight. Over the past year my brother and I have worked our butts off to get healthy, not just for looks but for the sake of our life's. As of today my brother weighs 175 lbs, I'm at 170 lbs. My point is that is that if you focus and try your hardest you can have whatever body you want. And sometimes you need to guy like Lars to give you motivation, that way you can look back and say "I proved all those people wrong"

I am tall and lean, and Lars is absolutely correct. Fat people can call me skinny, even know I'm a normal weight for my height, and that's not insensitive, even know I'm offended every time. But if I call an overweight person fat or obese, I'm a jerk. It's the same with being tall, "how's the weather up there?", FU, if I reply "how does my a** smell?", I'm a jerk. Sorry, I take care of myself and you don't, sorry I don't drink soda or eat fast food and you do, sorry I work out and you sit on the couch...

Insults aren't a one-way road and fat people are a embarrassment as a nation. You are disgusting and lazy....don't like the truth, than do something about it.

I expected more Jersey Shore dirty beaches on this list. Wear shoes on the beach, syringes are everywhere there.

In inland beaches/swim areas in my state, tell your kids to steer clear of any couples who enter the water together. Not teen couples or young couples, mind you, but old, flabby mom & pop couples. They get out in water up to their waist to do the nasty, right there in the marked-off swim area. They're everywhere. When my own kids were old enough to figure out what was going on, that was about the end of going to the beach on a hot summer day. I expect it's gotten worse since the unemployment is so high, more time for adults to "play" at the beach.

Overnout – your comment is actually pretty ignorant. New Jersey is 4th on the list. We have some of the cleanest ocean water in the country. In contrast – California is 21st. As with most ignorant people – you seem to know that hypodermic needle episode happened in the 80s and it was New YORK's trash that washed up on OUR beaches. We sued New York for the clean up. It seems we should have also sued to have New York pay for tourism commercials and a full PR campaign similar to what the Gulf Coast states got from BP.

The reason why is that sanitation is not part of the culture. Most of the people that do that are uneducated illegals. You should speak up and get after them when they do that. We don't need them to treat our country like a toilet on top of everything else they do here.

Speaking of toilets, at least the toilet seats in women's gas stations in CA's Central Valley have finally stopped having pee all over them from illegals straddling them and letting loose. They finally figured that one out!

Went to a border beach back in 1987, I believe it was Rosarita. There was a huge pipe dumping stinking raw untreated sewage in the ocean and families with kids playing in the water only 20-30 feet away from it. Like I said, sanitation is not a big part of the culture. Just look at how they turn neighborhoods into trash filled slums in a very short time.

Cameron County (Parish) borders Texas; the spills were 300 miles east and were moved further eastward to Florida by Gulf of Mexico currents.

Only about 6,800 people live in Cameron County and it is the largest county (Parish) in Louisiana. The bacteria pollution is natural from the swamps and marshes that run off into the Gulf of Mexico. The author of this article should have done some research into this before writing this up. Simply put, the beaches and surrounding waters are in the same condition they were in 500 years ago. Typical media garbage.

Not surprised at all that South Padre is listed as 5 star, it always has been clean and pretty especially when I was a kid.
Though my family and I preffered to go to the less populous sections of the Padre island area when I was a kid, and Brazos island which is beautiful.

Same for Milwaukee's South Shore Beach, shortly after we moved up here, my family tried to brighten up my spirits(I did not want to move) and decided to take a "beach trip" to Milwaukee South shore.
It stank horribly, the shore was filled with gooey nasty pollution runoff and glass, there were dead birds and fish on the shore, we never ever went back.

I'm not sure how Galveston didn't make the list of worst beaches. Nothing worse, than being out in the water, when a milk bottle smacks you in the head.

I live in Galveston. I walk the beach but I stay out of the water. I would rather go home healthy. It is sad but nearly every all open waters in the US are too badly polluted to be considered safe. Go to the pool if you must swim and even then be careful to check the last water quality report. If it is over four hours old or marginal go take a shower. The days of safe swimming without taking precautions are long over.

And out of all the people to throw garbage and waste on these beaches, I wonder how many of them claim to love their city/state/country?

Nothing says patriotism like defacing and trashing your country. While you're at it, America, why don't you dump your used motor oil down the storm drain and flick your cigarette butts out the car window.

I have a few mexican friends that don't pollute areas. But really every sat. It's a hey day and there is more trash all over the place than I've ever seen.At least they cover it with sand at your beach shoot here they just throw it on the ground mid run. It's so repulsive.I personally don't care if someone's overweight it doesn't mean they aren't nice people.Like I tell my kid, if everyone were the same the world would be boring. And yes you caught me I am extremly jealous of your banana hammock!

Lars is right, too many FAT people blocking the view as well as taking up limited and valuable beach space. Whale watching should be done on a boat out in the ocean and not on the beach!

I live in AR so a visit to a beach is rare. When u only see a few in ur life they tend to be memorable; good, bad and ugly. Florida's Cocoa Beach 5 years ago was awesome. Half Moon Bay in CA was soso and any Gulf of Mexico beach i've seen is crap. Clearwater was ok i guess. Wish Cocoa beach was in my back yard!

Avalon (Catalina, California) beach is really bad because the "beach" shares the area with boats that are anchored off shore. And lazy good for nothings who can't use the pumping stations will "dump" their refuse tanks to avoid fees or hassle with time. Even if they put put put out of the bay and do it, it can still come back in. The area looks beautiful but is really bad. They need to find another place for the ships to go, or they need to seperate/move/close the beach somehow. Because sooner or later people are going to get sick.

Here in San Diego we use to have twice daily water testing at all the beaches up and down the coast from Imperial Beach all the way to Oceanside. It was great, it was updated around 7am and 2pm every day. If it rained, you could check which beaches were polluted very quickly and easily on the Internet. Then some good for nothing bureaucrat decided to stop the water testing program. I think it was Ahhhhhhnold the Governator. But anyway, real slick move there rick. People come to CA for the beach lifestyle, and you prevent them from seeing if the water is deadly/polluted? Real smart pal. Not only that you create a liability issue because while the water could be very bad you put LIFEGUARDS on the shore, making people think it's safe to go in. That's an invitation for a lawsuit right there. If you aren't going to guarantee the water is safe by testing, what are you doing putting lifeguards up to invite people to go in the water?

Ughhhhh please bring back water testing... stupid bureaucrats..

If you throw something away, where is away? Generally on a barge and into the ocean. And I personally wouldn't have a fat person as my kids teacher baby sitter etc.I think people in those positions are role models for an unhealthy life style.I don't mind that people are overweight I think it's their choice. But shunning them is not encouraging to their weight loss either.I'm always happy to see fat people at the gym because I know it's hard for them. And as long as someone's trying I support that.If you don't have unhealthy food in your house you're less likely to eat it and get fat, every day we have a choice of how we treat our bodies and what we put in them.

Cleanest beaches in the US – South Padre Island? You're joking right? We were there a few years ago with family and couldn't believe all of the assorted plastic trash all over the beah....wrappers..bottles you name it. Even saw a few discarded baby diapers. All of this trash and with trash cans conveniently located every 50 – 75 ft set back from the beach. After seeing S. Padre on the list I quit reading. I knew then whoever wrote the piece doesn't have a clue what they're reporting.

I only visit a few beaches per year. Galveston is usually murky. Lots of oil activity just off shore but its not oil but more like ocean debris. it is interesting after sunset to sit and watch the spots of light appear. Hundreds of lights from the off shore rigs and wells. Use binoculars to see the most of them. Coco beach is ok but I noticed it didn't list any Florida beaches. The worst beach I've ever seen in my life is near Ft. Walton Beach, public area. Not only did it have tens of thousands of small jelly fish that sting like bees, but we saw media helicopters fly over. So the news trucks start arriving and the reporter asked me how I like swimming with a group of Great White sharks. I said, "as much as I like getting in the car and breaking every speed limit to get the hell out of town." The next was San Diego as your really needed a wet suite because of how harsh the water is and the raw sewage. They warned us not to go out without a suit and not to get any water in our mouth. I wondered if the Beach Boys had stopped writing songs too soon as San Diego needed a new song like, "Sewer water, boogie board."

I live in Dana Point, CA. It kills me when I see people in the Harbor paddle boarding and falling in the disgusting water that the boats have polluted or allowing their children to go in the water at the baby beach. I have lived here my whole life (I'm 27) and I haven't been in the ocean in 10 years or more. I was never much of an ocean person to begin with but it's really sad how polluted we allow the water to get. Doheny or Orange County beaches in general are so beautiful, couldn't ask for better weather. But us humans have really done a number on it. Sad..

I think some of the prettiest beaches are along the Gulf of Mexico in Florida, so I'm not surprised about Alabama having 5 star rating for a few of their beaches. At any rate, for the beaches in FL, whether the water is up to par, I don't know, but when have visited there about 3 times over the last 10 years, it really looked pristine.

I'm surprised none of the Florida beaches were on either list, but have to agree. Most of the Gulf coast beaches we've been to in Florida are super clean. We lived in California for 27 years and now live near Clearwater Beach, Florida. Still, I'd take a Hawaiian beach over any on the mainland!

The reason for high bacteria counts should be listed here, because without the source it's misleading (the beaches near an outfall or creek are obvious, the others not so). There are a couple beaches near my home that get poor scores, but the reason is natural: kelp and wildlife. A high bacterial count can be dangerous for swimmers regardless of the source, but the news is not so dire if the source is the normal biota of the ocean.
