Americans' heads have been growing, scientists say

If you're American with an average-sized head, your noggin is likely bigger than your ancestor's was seven generations ago.

That's the implication of research by Richard Jantz and colleagues at the Forensic Anthropology Center at the University of Tennessee.

The scientists analyzed about 1,500 skulls, dated from various years in the 1800s and 1900s. The researchers focused on Caucasian individuals because there weren't as many skulls from blacks and Hispanics. Although their conclusions are about white Americans, there is no reason to believe these patterns don't pertain to other races, Jantz said. More research just needs to be done.

Over the last 150 years or so, it appears that skulls got narrower from side to side by about 5 to 7 millimeters, and higher from top to bottom by an average of nearly 10 millimeters, Jantz said. And the overall size of the head has, on average, increased by an amount equivalent to the size of a tennis ball, he said.

Jantz speculates that there are several factors in the American environment that help contribute to this trend:

For one, there is far more nutrition than ever before in the United States. The problem of obesity - of over-nutrition - is more of a concern than undernourishment. People's work has become less physically-intensive, and even manual labor is often assisted by machines in some way.

Because of cars, people walk less. Because of vaccines, epidemic diseases that once killed many children no longer do.

Mothers who might not have survived childbirth two centuries ago are now living, thanks to medicines and procedures such as Caesarean sections - their children are surviving, too. And people don't often choose mates with the very same ethnicity – particularly not from the same part of Europe as their own ancestors – as they would have before.

"That has resulted in opening up the gene pool," Jantz said.

Brain size is probably correlated with skull size, so this means Americans' brains may also be getting bigger, but this has yet to be proven. The next step for researchers would be to see if certain parts of the brain have expanded, which might give an indication of whether there are particular abilities that have been enhanced as a result of this change over time.

The researchers did not directly measure the circumference of the head, so it's hard to say whether this trend has had any effect on hat size.

Is the increase in skull size part of a larger pattern of the human body growing in general? It's true that people are on average taller today than in the 1800s, but height has plateaued. What about our heads?

"I think the skulls will continue to change, and I think the direction depends on the direction the environment goes," Jantz said. "Obviously there have to be limits on how narrow or on how tall it could get, so I don't know if I want to predict how much longer this trend will continue."

The researchers hope to get this research published. They presented their findings at the American Association of Physical Anthropologists meeting in April.

@Chief Little Skull...but that is evolution. Environmental changes are one of the factors of what fuels the whole game. Natural selection is the mechanism. The genetic mutations you're thinking of are only one part of the equation. Given enough time...these little changes (like a change in diet and breeding habits) can become bigger changes. That is something worth getting excited over...even if it means another 100,000 years 😉

I thought that DNA had to change and mutate and become incorporated into the larger gene pool for evolution to take place. Our skulls have become larger across the gene pool with no common change of DNA.

Thats a very simplistic definition of macro-evolution.. however what you're missing is that macro-evolution is the sum of smaller changes due to micro-evolution, which is technically what we are seeing here. Many many iterations of micro-evolution must take place independent from another population for their genes to become incompatible. So for now theres chance your offspring might have a bigger head than you, until they mate with each other on an island millions of years while we continue to mate with each other. Then we *might* be two different species.

Don't get too excited thinking people are getting smarter. What they didn't tell you is that the size of the average human braincase has been decreasing for the last 3,000 years. So this latest finding is probably just due to better nutrition and health care. 150 years is not enough time for evolution to increase the size so drastically (by a centimeter).

Humans since the early 1900s have been testing 20% higher on IQ tests every generation, people are becoming smarter. The braincase geting smaller is because over time the brain has evolved and works more efficently like a prius, you dont need a semi truck and trailer to get you where you need to go

Neanderthal craniums were significantly larger than AMH skulls and they were far more physically robust than we are. There's a LOT more to it than sheer size. Also, for all those who aren't scientifically inclined, evolution is measure by entire populations (like the whole of humanity) over many many many generations and is noted by genetic mutations, not just physical appearance.

Make an IQ test, then go back to college, mathematics degree, for 2 or 3 years, then re-do the test, you will have drastically improved your IQ...
Yes I know, quite a lot of work just to test this hypothesis 🙂 ...

Giving birth is certainly a lot safer today than a century of two ago, but Cesareans account for only a small part of the improvement. More important are the development of antibiotics, blood banking, the germ theory of disease and development of sterile technique, effective drugs to reduce hemorrhage, the eradication of polio and rickets (diseases which deformed the pelvis), and public health measures like clean water. Modern methods of birth control, especially to prevent pregnancy at the extremes of reproductive age (under 20, over 40) and the dangers of having more than 5 children also play a vital role in preventing maternal deaths. So does safe, legal abortion.

I find this interesting simply because years ago when a black baby was born the parents determined that the size of their head, especially the forehead, determined the intelligence of the child. Our African ancestors still practice shaping their childrens head and they too are very intelligent people.

I would tend to think this is a result of living in controlled indoor environments. Because we have learned to seal off our dwellings with glass windows, wooden doors, etc., our bodies are subject to less environmental stress and therefore the body has more energy to devote to brain development. It's a process that's somewhat similar to the increase in brain size that occurred when humanoid species first encountered shellfish and seafood.

For starters, Hispanic is not a race. It's embarrassing to read American research implying that it is, it should have Asian/Mongoloid instead. Anyone who travels or has old photographs of people from even a hundred years ago can see a significant change not only in head size but body frame. We are much larger and we look thicker(not fat wise). The Boomer Generation really jumped in size when compared to their parents.

The only real difference is that Africans from Africa are capable of producing more types of new humans due to their higher genetic diversity.

Caucasians are the least human of all of us, and they also have larger heads, just like their ancestors the Neanderthals.

Humans have smaller heads and brains, and the human brain is organized better producing more intelligent people than is possible with Caucasians.

Have you ever wondered why no foundation of civilization has come from ANY European? Not mathematics, astronomy, medicine, engineering, governing systems, religion, NOTHING!

Caucasians simply aren't capable of civilization creation, but they do a good job of copying it and pretending that they did.

What may be helpful is for you guys to pick up a history book and see what Europeans were doing, oh say, 0 BC, and then look at what Africans were doing in Egypt at arouns, say 3000 BC.

Building Pyramids that you can't build today, performing brain surgery and abortions. Charting stars that it took Caucasians having computers and telescopes to see and understand. Building buildings and structures on the mathematical pattern of growth, and encoding information is a language that lasts forever... mathematics.

All medical and electrical symbols are Egyptian, all 3 major religions are Egyptian, and most of the Africans on the West coast are decended from Egyptians.

BTW, Greeks and Romans(Italians) are genetically African, the only ones that aren't are the Europeans, who are 91-100% African.

Don't go calling some racist simply because you lack the knowledge to understand the facts. Study history, and study the genetic makeup of Caucasians, and you'll see that they're the only ones with high concentrations of Neanderthal DNA!

Oracle, just because a person lives in Africa does not make them Black. North African Arabs and Jews are White belonging to the Caucasian race and so are people like the Berbers. Do not mix geography with race. And as far as the latest findings go, all present day humans came out of Africa, with one branch staying East African and another moving West, one went up through the Middle East through to the Caucasus, where it is thought the diverentiations came about that made up the Orientals and Europeans – this area being know as the nursery of the human race. Also, it seems that there were other types of humans such as the Neanderthals which they know discovered had also mated with the our of Africa humans as traces of their genes can be found in Europeans.

As far as fhe inventions that you mentioned, most, if not all, are the product of the Caucasian or White race, no matter in which continent they lived, Africa, Europe, America. This is something that cannot be disputed. Even ancient peoples such as the Egyptians, Phoenicians and Hebrews were of Caucasian stock, although in the case of the ancient Egyptians there could have been some intermingling with Nubians, however Cleopatra, the most famous Queen of Egypt was of Greek descent.

Another factor obviously is nutrition, but what about less people smoking. And then there is diet. not just what we consume, but how we consume it. So many foods now days are so overly processed. It could have an impact on how much muscle, bone and conctive tissue and individual has. Two humans, one eating a lot of raw grains and nuts is going to be structurally different what one that eats twinkies every day, even if there dna was exactly the same.

Actually, I have much trouble believing that we are growing more intelligent. There's no way to measure this, per se. Also, this may be used to legitimate superiority over other peoples, much as the construction of race did during the colonial era. I'm not saying that its impossible, but that other factors should be more seriously considered.

I think it's pretty clear we are more intelligent, But I think it's only due to better education and better excess to information. And nothing to do with bigger brain capacity. As for the "race" issue, I'm a firm beleiver that all the human race has the capacity irregardless of their ethnicity, as long as that education starts soon enough. The first 3 years are critical in a childs life.

Even though the article says our heads are geting bigger does not mean our brains are keeping up with either the space allotted or any more knowledge than before. Frankly, I think the newer generation are dumbing down and heading toward caveman days. Think I'm wrong? Ask any younger person a common sense question and all you may get is Duh?
So called Smart phones are dumbing down the youngsters.

You probably would've succeeded in saying technology was the reason for people losing intelligence had you not have used the internet. Just saying.

We are becoming cone heads! Like the elongated skulls found in Peru! We do need to figure out what happened to past advanced civilizations so we can help ourselves before it happens again!

Actually black and hispanic skulls have been found. Hispanic skulls have been getting pointer and dumber. While black skulls are looking more and more neanderthal a bit more monkey.

I don't buy it. But, people are getting taller and fatter – both of which are correlated with an increased brain size.

If part of this is the result of more intermarriage, does that mean the gene pool is being diluted? Isn't it a good thing for the human race to have bio-diversity to handle whatever the future may hold ?

Whew! Glad to know it. I do a lot of community theater with a group that has been around for 90 years and we have a lot of ladies' vintage hats. NONE of them fit my head.

leather headbands will shrink with time if not stretched by wearing. I have military berets that I wore in the 1980s that I can't wear now.

Sure, our heads get bigger, that just the beginning. Then we advance into outer space and our muscle mass deteriorates due to low gravity and bad food and we get thin and wiry. Predatory senses of smell and hearing become less important locked in a spaceship so the nose and ears shrink away over time. Our eyes become enlarged due to a combination of vision becoming our primary source of information and 192” TVs. We ARE the Greys! And then for some reason we develop time travel and come back to probe ourselves right in the annals. That’s sounds sooo like us. Just a theory really.

But we all know that people are taller than before due to better diet and nutrition and calcium intake. How does taller correlate to larger skull size? Are skulls larger only because people are taller? We don't know because this article sucks.

human heads are getting smaller. the brain power is INVERSELY proportional the the number of offspring each human has. i.e., smaller brains are having more babies and passing on the dumb genes
